Jigano had thought long and hard about this expedition, but the tragedy of Fiat Lux had dashed many of his plans. Amalia would normally have been first asked, and Deimos with her… but now, of course, that was impossible, and he could not ask the General to leave her side. Of the other Loreseekers, Sam was busy with his religious duties and Ingrid had not fared well the last time they’d gone on an underground adventure. Loren was fighting his own battles against the guilt the festival had left guilt Jigano was doing his best to shove down and move past, at the moment. Maea, however, had returned, and he had asked her to join him in this expedition. Hotaru, too, had proven to be a staunch ally in previous projects, and her fierceness might prove useful if they had to face anything unexpected below the ground. Having someone else who could Heal along was simple wisdom – and in the end, all three women were friends, or those he hoped to become better friends with. No matter how he tried to rationalize the useful skills each brought, it all came back to wanting to reach out and make those connections in spite of the snarling voice in the back of his mind that told him he didn’t deserve them. He could have invited them to tea, or dinner, or a picnic in the Glade… but an invitation to adventure, danger, and exploration was more his style.

Bundled in their thickest layers, after they had left offerings of food and fuel with the guards he had led the small group from the portal across the tundra in the cold grey light before dawn, towards where some of them had met the ice genie before. He had circled them around to the west, approaching the exile’s village cautiously and with stealth as he cast about for the abandoned mine’s entrance. The sun was beginning to burn above the snow as they ducked into the darkness and Jigano carefully unshielded Ludo’s lantern, keeping the light aimed deeper into the broad ice-encrusted tunnel that sloped gently downwards alongside a broken track where minecarts had once been pulled by weary mules. Anything burnable had long since been scavenged from this part of the mine, and there was little left but grooves in the frozen ground to indicate its former purpose.

”Everyone ready?” he asked softly, voice slightly muffled by his scarf. He had already shared their goal to explore the mine and determine if any mageglass remained within when he had requested their help. Now it remained to see how far they would get, and what they would find within.

Jigano is bringing:
SoulKeeper | A magical lantern capable of housing lost souls of the departed. The lantern keeps them safe until such a time as they can be released to Ludo and Mort.

Broken Spectacles | These glasses can translate certain texts, however because of the damage they do not do so with any reliability.

Two-way mirror | Two small oval-sizes pieces of mirror. Each item is magically bonded to the other, and reveals the reflection of its partner when looked into, regardless of distance. (Other half currently held by Rory)

Guardian Sphere | A small glass-like sphere (roughly 2" in diameter) that allows a portal guardian to innately sense where their counterparts are. The light within darkens the closer the ascended are to activating a new portal. When held by anyone else, the light dims and nothing happens.

Everdry Bed | A square of silk that transforms into a large, luxurious bed upon command; always warm and clean and never ever gets that wet spot during use

Bracers/Gorget made by Deimos
Knife and Rapier
Pack with food, water, journal and pencils, Flint and tinder

This is an Abandoned-focused plot-advancing PQ looking for mageglass in Halo! Spots have already been filled. Please list what your character is bringing on the expedition in your opening post.

Returning so soon to the frozen wasteland where she'd found herself after a year lost in limbo had not been the first point on Maea's list of priorities. But Jigano had asked if she wanted to come along, and she had been so delighted by the invitation that she said yes right away, not pausing to even question if she could.

It had been something of a struggle to get her preparations for the expedition done in time. With the house in ruins and no real assets to barter with, she had been forced to make do with what little she could salvage. Sturdy leather breeches beneath the usual white dress, supple leather boots and her brother's old fleece-lined coat still saw her underdressed for the climate. While it was oversized enough on her to allow for several layers of wool beneath, it still wasn't quite enough to combat the frigid temperatures they were faced with. Maea counted on Ludo's gift to make up for that; the ragged shawl had been wrapped several times around her head and shoulders, effectively hiding away both the hair and the better part of her face. Tied to a leather thong about her neck hung the crystal she had nicked from Remi's workshop, and on the belt she carried one simple hunting knife.

Adjusting the plain satchel carried over one shoulder - full with supplies such as food, blankets, a change of clothes and other essentials - Maea nodded in response to Jigano's question. She threw a glance over her shoulder at the other two women. It had come as a surprise to see Evie brought along for the trip. Hotaru she didn't know, and that was fine, but it was no secret that the relation between herself and the Wordsworth was less than friendly. Maea had tried to keep herself out of the other woman's way until now, unwilling to trigger anything before the mission even began, and she really hoped that Evie would do her the same courtesy.

They were here for a reason, after all, and pointless bickering would definitely not help.

"Ready, she replied, turning back to Jigano and the entrance to the mine. Her breath fogged in the cold air, but that was the only sign she showed of being out in the arctic climate. As long as she wore the shawl, she would neither feel the cold nor be affected by it; something she definitely did not mourn at the moment.

Maea is bringing the following items;

Type: Dark
Ludo's Rags | A shawl made of pitch dark, lightweight material. The wearer will not feel cold or the effects of the cold, regardless of the temperature. You look spooky.

Type: Grey
Glass Lens | A magical lens that can reveals illusions. For weak illusions it can see through them. For stronger illusions, it merely shows them as a shimmer.

1 hunting knife
1 leather satchel containing; food, water skin, a change of clothes, a blanket, rope, tools for making fire.

Exploration of Halo had always been her original goal, and so when Jigano had approached her about a focused expedition for mageglass, she had been happy to throw her name into the pot. After a few forays into the frozen wasteland, she is more than adequately prepared with her thick furs and layers that she has crafted since the portal was opened. It is what she arrives in now, golden hair peeking out from a thickly furred edge of her hood. Jigano blends in with the background, as does one of the other adventurers who stands beside him. Nonetheless she knows what to look for, and hefts her rucksack to better position it upon her spine as they go searching about for the entrance to the mine. It's derelict, though what more she expected Hotaru doesn't really know.

When Jigano calls to them from behind his scarf, the woman nods. "Ready as I'll ever be." The sardonic drawl is more playful than anything, admittedly excited to go traipsing about in the dark and gloom, finding whatever horrors await them.

Hotaru brings:

1 Basic Sword and Sheathe from Deimos
1 Rucksack filled with three days provisions and a canteen of water
1 Small torch, unlit
she knows the restless press of moths
mistaking her presence for candlelight

Hotaru has a passive magic that makes her glow with an internal golden light; it makes her appear youthful and her hair seems to look like moving sunlight. Can only subtly illuminate dark spaces.

Evie
Evie is expecting a lot of things when she arrives in Halo. Monsters in the mineshaft, cannibal citizens, a useless venture that ends in maiming or death.

What she doesn't expect is Maea. Who she had believed dead after her sudden disappearance. She stares agog for a few moments, wondering if this is some sort of trick or illusion before they have even descended into the mines. "Is that you Maea?" Her voice is quiet, intended only for the alabaster-haired woman, and it quakes with restrained emotion. Maea had been one of her best - and only - friends. To have her so suddenly, so randomly reunited is rocking Evie's entire expectation of this adventure.

There's no time for dallying or interrogations however, and she turns her head when Jigano asks if they are prepared. She hesitates, letting the other women speak, but eventually voices her own agreement. "Yes, let's get going or it'll be dark by the time we're back out." Which would only make it colder and more inhospitable.

Evie brings:

Her set of throwing daggers
A satchel with pre-prepared herbs and salves for injuries
Medical supplies including splints, tourniquets, and bandages
reckless at heart but never unkind
in a perfect world we could've been fine

RANDOM EVENT
There is a reason these mines are abandoned and long since been used.

Upon entering the mine, you will see the slope that leads down from the mine’s entrance, drifting darker and darker, but the further you step there’s a small snap heard from the back corner as the group steps within. With it, all four of you will find the dark caverns of the walls within shake briefly and hear a fraction of snapping that echoes through the rest of the corridor.

Then the icicles begin to fall, shards of ice slipping from above that dart down. Jigano manages to step far enough within to evade the onslaught, but Maea, Hotaru, and Evie aren’t so lucky. Luckily for you all, they’re all superficial wounds along arms and shoulders that perhaps have a chance of blood.

Was it bad luck? Or a warning?

Should you all continue, you’ll find two separate tunnels within the dark. One on the right that leads around a corner you can’t see past yet, but the mine tracks follow down this way. One on the left that leads relatively straight, but appears as an unused walk way.

------

Uh oh! The entrance shakes and icicles begin to fall from the ceiling as you enter. Is it a trap? Or is it sheer bad luck?

You have 48 hours to respond. Please include a quick summary at the bottom of your post.

REMINDER: This PQ+’s level is difficult, which means it can/will be dangerous and there is the possibility of permanent harm/death.

Dark and still as the mouth of the cave was, Jigano had hoped that they might slip within without disturbing the peace of the abandoned (hopefully) caverns. He wasn't sure what triggered the snapping, but a sixth sense urged him to dodge out of the way as the world began to shake and fall around them in crystalline shards. Too late he saw that his companions weren't so lucky, and he winced at the scrapes and bruises the ice left behind. "Does anyone need Healing?" he whispered, voice soft against the chance of triggering another cascade of the icicle daggers that remained.

At least the injuries looked shallow enough to not slow them down, and he lifted his lantern to reveal the paths ahead. Right, and the tracks of the cart. Left... and no clue as to what its purpose had been. Perhaps it was just a shallow tunnel that would quickly end, some lode that had panned out too soon. Or perhaps it led to areas less well-explored than the mine's more profitable lodes, where there might yet remain something of interest. Something mysterious and half-legend, just waiting to be unearthed. He tilted his head to the left, arching a silver brow (a gesture largely lost beneath his muffling hat and scarf) but waited to see what the others would choose.

Jigano asks if anyone needs Healing. He suggests the left-hand path, and will lead the way if the others agree.

Of course (and Hotaru thinks this with the deepest, most biting sarcasm she can muster in her mind) as soon as they enter the imposing cavern, it trembles with their passing and rains down debris upon them. It's no more than surface scratches, but annoying as hell all the same, and if Hotaru knows anything about adventures like this (and she does, Helovian born and bred as she is) it's practically a sign to either get the hell out of dodge or nut up and shut up.

She's never been one to shut up necessarily, but she can at least continue on. For now. Jigano may be a friend to her, but Hotaru always has and always will put herself first. So long as she doesn't spontaneously die before she can beat a hasty escape.

"Surface wounds," she announces, keeping her voice low and soft, not wanting to trigger further incidents with reverberations in the cave. When Jigano poses a silent question, she nods her head to the left, agreeing that the undiscovered portion is likely the best for a rare material. Even if it's likely more dangerous because of it.

Hotaru agrees with the left path, speaks quietly of her wounds.

Maea couldn't help it; she raised a brow at Evie's question. The girl almost sounded happy to see her, which... was honestly confusing. Friends though they may have been, it had always been on the Wordsworth's terms, and framed as a huge inconvenience at the best of times.

"Of course not, I'm a figment of your imagination. Missed me that much, did you?" But she smiled, hopefully taking the edge off the sarcasm.

The pale girl entered the mine. At the snapping sound from above, Maea's eyes shot towards the ceiling of the dark path and realized the icicles were about to fall even as they came crashing down. But though she'd seen the threat she couldn't bring her arms up to shield her face fast enough, and winced as the debris crashed down on her. It was more shock that made her stagger, however, because once the dust settled and she could look herself over, it became clear that she'd only have some bruising from the heavier pieces.

"No need, save your strength... We might need it later," she replied with quiet voice to Jigano's question, and wiped away the blood that beaded from a shallow cut on her cheek. Looking over her shoulder to make sure Evie was alright, Maea then returned her attention back to the path. She too nodded her approval of the narrower path, and would follow the others as they continued to press on.

Declines the offer for healing, and agrees to take the left path. Checks to see if Evie is okay.

Evie
There are more burned bridges than just Sam for Evie to repair, and though she has become more in tune with the reality of her emotions, more mature, she can see that even here there are missteps in her past that haunt her. But her relief, her happiness, that at least is genuine. Proving that to Maea is only part of her penance. "I did," she says softly, sincerely, for only Maea to hear as they begin their descent into the cavern. At least the wind chill is negligible here, though she soon finds herself regretting that thought when ice pelts down upon them. It's no more than scratches, perhaps a few bruises, but Maea's and Hotaru's voices prompt her nonetheless.

"Jigano's healing is more powerful, but I can take care of some scratches. Here," she says quietly, reaching for Maea's hand or wrist to imbue some healing. Doing the same with Hotaru as they catch up, if only to be polite and fair to the other woman. She nods in agreement to the left path, and though her prayers mean nothing, she finds herself doing so nonetheless in hopes that they make it out of this okay.

Evie attempts to use her Basic Healing on Maea and Hotaru, agrees with the left hand path.

RANDOM EVENT
The left path it is.

The walkway is icy at first, and as all of you follow along it, the path starts to go up into a wooden bridge-like structure. Jigano and Evie will make it across the bridge without any issues, while Maea might begin to see the spider-webbing and forming of cracks beneath her feet. Hotaru gets the brunt of it so far, and as she steps onto the ice covering the bridge, the ground beneath her will crack and begin to break should she remain in place.

If you all look down you’ll see spikes awaiting you at the bottom of the cavern, directly beneath the bridge you stand upon.

Do you leave? Or do you keep testing your luck?

------

Hotaru will fall through the ice into the pit of spikes next round if she remains in place.

Decide whether you want to continue forward down the path or back toward the entrance.

You have 48 hours to respond. Please include a quick summary at the bottom of your post.

Jigano will make it across the bridge without issue.
Hotaru will hear cracking begin from the ice beneath her.
Maea will notice spider-webbing beneath her feet as she crosses.

On the plus side, it seemed unlikely anyone else had been down this way in recent years or the bridge would already have collapsed beneath them. On the minus side, someone really didn't want people casually coming this way, if those metal spikes were anything to go by. He made it across on light feet, and Evie was right behind him, but the crack of the ice beneath Hotaru's feet had him turning to see what the problem was. Given time he could probably raise a rough wall of stone to the height of the bridge from the ground beneath, creating a sturdier, if less pretty, bridge, but in the moment he wasn't sure there was time for that. Instead he knelt immediately, stripping off a glove as he went so he could press his hand to frozen stone while he reached within and stroked the shimmering threads of his magic, playing across the green and brown strings of Earth in his soul and harmonizing with the gold of Healing.

He attempted to work with the boards and supports of the wooden bridge, using his combined Earth and Healing magic to strengthen it and remind it of the life it had once held. He couldn't turn back time, but he tried to call new life into the base the wood gave him to work with, growing it thicker and stronger beneath the ice and anchoring new roots into the stone on their end of it so that it would hold long enough for Hotaru to cross safely.

"Onwards and inwards?" He invited his brave friends with a crooked smile once the danger was past.

Jigano attempts to combine Mastered Earth and Mastered Healing to create new growth along the bridge to strengthen it and anchor it in the stone until Hotaru has crossed. He chooses to continue onwards afterwards.

Hotaru gives an appreciative nod towards the redheaded woman, reserving her words out of habit and self-preservation. It's imperative to focus on the slick path below, the placement of each foot, and as they ascend the bridgelike structure her eyes fall quickly to the cracks beginning to form. Now, normally, she would lay down and spread out her weight and slide forward on her belly - basic ice safety - but below the ice the spikes loom dangerously, distinctly shaped. Intentional. Cursing, she jumps for the edge, hoping even if her weight bears down on the ice by the edge instead of solid ground that the others will grab her outstretched hands and jerk her forward. She's not the type to trust strangers to save her, but staying on the shattering ice is simply not going to work.

The adrenaline warms her, but if she has made it across safely, it's not distracting enough to forget to respond to Jigano. A simple nod of her head as she slows her heartbeat indicates her willingness to continue.

Hotaru quickly jumps away from the ice towards the end of the bridge to not linger, hands out in case she stumbles and someone can grab her. Agrees to continue forward.

You're so cold
but you feel alive
Maea wasn't entirely sure what to feel about this new, soft version of Evie. On one hand it was a relief to not have to be on guard against the usual barbs and sarcasm, but on the other she had almost looked forward to test her mettle against it, now that she was determined to no longer back down. Somewhat confused, she merely smiled back at the redhead and accepted the healing without resisting; it would require some thinking on her part, this change of roles... But it was better saved for later.

The pale daughter of the Grounds kept her wits about her as she followed behind Hotaru down the slippery path. She hesitated slightly before daring to venture up on the bridge, but did not lag behind. Cold sweat began to break out on her back however, when she noticed the ice beneath her feet began to crack. Worse, it fractured and seemed ready to crumble beneath the woman walking ahead of her, and when Hotaru made a jump for the other side Maea paused a fraction of a second to give her the space to do so.

For her own part, she did not seem to cause quite such distress to the walkway. Perhaps because she was smaller, and thus weighed less? She proceeded with more caution, carefully placing her feet away from the already weakened spots as she pressed onwards, and hoped to reach the other side in one piece, without further drama. A quick glance at the gulf below made her shudder; the tips of the spikes seemed frightfully sharp, and very deliberately placed.

"Someone placed those on purpose" she commented in hushed tones once she was on the other side, pointing down at the lethal trap. "How long was it since this place was abandoned? Whoever left it apparently didn't want anyone coming back."

-----

Maea moves forward toward the other side, hoping her lighter weight will let her pass and trying to avoid walking on the places that weakened for Hotaru.

Evie
There's a certain warmth that fills her breast at being able to heal and be useful, and it buoys her as they walk along. Her boots are sturdy enough to keep her from slipping too badly, but the path below is treacherous nonetheless, especially in the dark. Evie follows behind Jigano, the wooden bridge below her holding her attention only briefly as she peers down and sees the spikes looming in the shadows below. It makes her stomach cringe uneasily, and moments later the sound of ice cracking has her turning in surprise. There's not much she can do to be useful, Jigano already kneeling to strengthen what he can while Hotaru leaps for the edge. Evie reaches to assist both remaining women across, ready to pull them bodily from the bridge just in case. "It might be a sign that they are guarding something. Hopefully." Otherwise the risks they are taking will only have a bittersweet ending.

Evie helps Maea and Hotaru across the bridge if needed, follows the group further.
