Deimos had really only ventured into the labyrinth’s confines once; perhaps over the past year, out of curiosity and a scattered sense of audacity. Daring and emboldened pathways sometimes settled along his blood, but not often, too partial to giving into calculations, ruminations, and speculation; hardly ever maneuvering without some sort of Machiavellian property coinciding with it. Now though, he had to reach the inside, per instructions administered by goddesses, per a celestial being who might be doing this just out of amusement, per blessings he’d hoped to achieve in a ring. There were likely some life lessons embedded in there too, but for the time being, he merely settled into the fold.

Armed, eternally, with his blades, knives, bag of holding, and any other odds and ends of assorted necessities, his eyes roamed into the sequestered threshold of curved vines, of coiled boughs, of intricate, warren details. He didn’t bring along Zuriel, intending to eventually fly his way out of here, and didn’t yearn to leave her behind to find her own way out (which she wouldn’t have taken kindly to anyway). So, along the intervals of its own homespun darkness, he wandered into its opening, its apertures, its fortitude, intrepid, stalwart, and stoic.

Originally, he had mostly come to scout it out and see what changes had happened. Did it look the same as when he arrived here last LongHeat? Or had the maze shifted and adjusted regardless, confusing and drifting from place to place with no semblance of understanding it? Haai comes with, the griffin drifting through the air with practiced ease as Sunjata flies above on navy wings with her.

But that’s when Haai suddenly dives toward something moving through the labyrinth, and Sunjata mentally curses her as he dives down after her – not seeing what it might be behind the mass of her. And soon enough, she ends up landing before Deimos, tail wagging and wings flaring in her small little greeting dance. And Sunjata realizes it’s Deimos, as he shifts into himself to land gingerly behind the griffin.

Steel gaze lifts toward Deimos with a small smile of greeting. “Deimos.” An incline of his head. “Didn’t take you as a guy to explore the maze on his own.” He muses.

The Sword expected monsters, demons, some other form of infidels: instead, upon wings, tails, and feathers, a griffin descended directly in his path (seemingly quite content), Sunjata following close behind. For a moment, his brows arched, a singular movement and sensation, before righting themselves back to their stoic properties. “Sunjata,” he proffered, an extension of greeting with a nod of acknowledgment, bending downwards to offer a pat to the companion. His attention didn’t deviate from the griffin, for now at least, discourse still managing to meander towards the other man – uncertain of how to broach particular subjects, while one was reeling and the other sinking. “I need an efas herb,” by way of shrugging and explanation, not offering or saying anything more unless the attuned was curious; straightening back out, intending to proceed down into warren routes, procuring a branch nearby and lighting the top as a makeshift torch. “How was the wedding?” A conversation starter as he roamed further in, the invitation silent, turning the first corner, staring into the void and the abyss, listening for any roaming dilemmas and tremors.

A slight dip of his head back in greeting as Deimos says his name in return. And yet, Haai is the one that sends happiness all abound at the attention from the General, nose sniffing the hand before letting him scratch her, offering a wet slobbery lick of a kiss as a thank you to his hand before turning to follow the group. Sunjata sticks his hands in his pockets, turning to walk with the general as he forms a torch of sorts. The question of the efas herb though, has him going through what he knows. “To help Amalia?” He asks curiously, since it makes sense. An herb after all.

But the question of the wedding has him sighing lightly, acutely aware of the weight on his hand before he shakes his head slightly while they walk – an awkward chuckle leaving him. “Awkward.” He offers honestly, keeping his gaze straight forward. “Sad, to an extent.” A bit of honesty. “Hotaru was there. She… certainly made a statement. There's much I regret about the whole thing.” The statement had made his life a bit of hell as well, but he digresses. Instead, he keeps his focus ahead, biting down on the inside of his cheek. “Thank you again for the rings by the way, regardless.” Even if the wedding wasn't what he wanted, even if he was going to try to make it work, however unhappy it made him. He still appreciated the rings and the effort put into it.

“Yes,” at a glance back over his shoulder, then maneuvering around a corner, watching the torch light play over the eaves and vestiges, looking, glancing around for anything out of place, anything threatening, bewitching, snared by eldritch teeth and claws. The beast didn’t make light of his multiple quests, but was careful, considerate of it too, tying and entangling it along his chest, ensuring the measures would be sufficient, forthright, and exactly what Safrin entailed.

He listened to the sigh as they threaded their way through though, a contortion of him yearning to be a little bitter, a little rancorous, for the ridiculousness of the man’s nuptials. For Hotaru. For things that seemed to easily tied together (though maybe this one was a Gordian knot), when his convictions had been punctured hours later – theirs went on, trapped in its stupefying shell. Not built upon love or compassion or even devotion – but blinded bluffs and bets. If he wasn’t occupied by other matters and notions, the Sword might have sneered, raised his hackles. “Did she?” Came on the slightest of smirks, vengeance for Hotaru, but then naught more, allowing Sunjata to go into detail if he wanted, warranted the notions. He nearly asked then why bother at all, but it wouldn’t have mattered. Done and done. “You are welcome,” applied on a shrug; a rippling effect in the varnished warren, piercing eyes shifting back over shadows.

He wonders if the herb will help, or if there’s maybe a second hand reason why the General needs that herb in specific. But he doesn’t voice these concerns, not as he’s too busy focusing on the nightmare that was his wedding – how it likely wouldn’t end, what Hotaru had done… What he regretted about it most of all. How Hotaru and he had a relatively solid relationship, an understanding beyond what anyone else had given him.

The things she told him about what Phoebe had done to him, what he allows her to continue with.

He’s not surprised when Deimos returns the comment, but a part of him still sinks with it somewhat. And he keeps his focus ahead as Haai runs to chase off a lost squirrel or two, charging the way with little puffs of fire that light the end of the path. “She kissed me at the altar.” He explains, keeping his gaze ahead, some amount of regret panging through him. “Phoebe didn’t see, but everyone else did. So I guess we’ll see how that turns out when she finds out.” He rumbles, running his ringed hand through his hair. The response from Deimos over his thanks for the rings garners a nod, but he’s too focused on the rest of what occurred to comment more on it.

Despite the agonizing semblances of the world around them, Sunjata’s first statement, as they wounded along more corners, as he glanced back and forth, between light and shadow, a snort ensued, and the smallest of snickers earned its way along his mouth, folded into the darkness, likely unseen. “That sounds like Hotaru.” Her perilous need for dramatics, theatrics, and spectacles had won him over lifetimes ago; when he’d utilized her efforts for thief antics and information gathering, and later, when she reigned beside him. If he were in a vengeful mood, the Sword might’ve swung a more stabbing comment, a more lacerating venture, damning and condemning everyone else around him too. Serves you right and she wanted you to see what you would lose echoed in his mind, but he knew the dangers, the trials, and tribulations that came after on such mercurial, tempestuous comments.

Because he knew what it was like to fail over and over again too.

But in this – something the other man could’ve avoided, he shrugged, watching the ground as they roamed deeper and deeper into the warren’s nest. Another contortion to him nearly asked Sunjata if he simply had a need, a penchant, for continually causing incidents, scenes, or staged works (it sounded exhausting), only earning a shrug of his shoulders as they continued their maneuvering pace, his gaze settling on the companion too. “What do you expect?” A lighter tone, measured and calculated away from all the other evasive or insouciant responses conjured in his mind.

A slight incline of his head in agreement to the mention that it indeed sounded like Hotaru, and despite it all there’s still a small wry smile that crosses his face as he runs a hand through his hair. He can still feel the kiss if he thinks hard enough, still feel the pang in his gut if he spends too long dwelling on it. But ah well, there wasn’t much he could do about it now. And he hadn’t even seen the Valkyrie since to speak to her about what occurred, why he’d done it, why he hadn’t talked to her first. And so he walks with Deimos as his companion trudges on, watching the griffin dart from side to side in an attempt to hunt.

The question that rises from Deimos gives him pause though, and he almost pauses midstep. What did he expect? A reaming more than likely. A question of ‘oh this is why you wanted to continue to do whatever it was you were doing on your own time, because of her’. He’d not have denied it, but he inhales deeply regardless and shakes his head, gaze drifting toward the ground. “Some sort of fall out I imagine. She can’t kick my ass so the best she could do is just yell at me.” He snorts to that, not caring if she did.

What a bizarre situation. Deimos only had his own experiences with relationships to reflect upon, or histories expounded and expanded from other worlds – some political, most not based on how their kingdoms aligned, allied, and broke – and his contentment with Amalia, everything else seemed confusing. A fall out and yelling, screaming at one another, as a foundation to marriage sounded like some sort of mangled, self-inflicted torture. The notion of why bother filtered and flickered through his brain; but in the end, he supposed it was none of his business. It was for Sunjata and the midwife to explore, navigate, and consequentially alter; their own morphing scheme of challenges, bluffs, and conundrums.

Leaving Sunjata’s marital paradox into silence, his ears heard a quiet murmuring of follow me begin. He turned his head in the direction of the noise, like a strange chattering, and because he’d been lured by siren wails, moth to flame tendencies before, he narrowed his eyes in speculation. “Hear that?” He grumbled, a whisper so when the voices rose, he was barely a snippet on the breeze. Friend or foe machinations – and he always presumed the latter, based on their current whereabouts and terrain, obstinately stretching his limbs in the opposite direction from the squirrel insistence. Perhaps the griffin wanted a snack, an opportunity for further hunting, as they marched on.

It wasn’t a marriage he wanted, knew the problems on the surface would only erupt deeper and deeper as time went on. But he was stubborn, an idiot, and often times couldn’t quite see the full end of things despite his attempts to. Wrenches thrown into plans, courses taken and invaded that drift further and further away from the course that he’s attempted to follow and go by to get the results he wanted. It is difficult for him to adapt and more times than not, he ends up stuck beneath the rubble, the driftwood, of the plans that he’d attempted to follow.

Naught is said about the conversation topic, and for that he’s quietly thankful. But it’s distracted by the sound, the rumbling and murmuring of the squirrels that inhabited the labyrinth. “I do.” He agrees, Haai’s ears swiveling to follow and hunt – haunches lowered to prowl, puff of smoke leaving her maw as she begins to follow the sound, Sunjata back on her heels far more attentive. “Where do we find this herb?” He asks quietly, shooting a glance toward Deimos before he looks forward once more.

Perhaps things would work out for them. Perhaps they’d resolve their bizarre tendencies. Perhaps it would fold into something not as condemning. Perhaps they wouldn’t, and it would fall apart at the seams, parting ways at some eventuality, some other monumental catastrophe. The way this world worked, it was hard to know, fathom, predict, or understand half of the earth’s antics. Despite any of his machinations or trials, he couldn’t determine the next void as much as the next individual: especially based on plans surrounding LongNight or Fiat Lux.

The squirrels continued, an escalation of noise and cacophony, no longer quiet or hushed in their chattering, a heightened prowess. Was it meant to dissuade and trick? Follow me, follow me echoed and pressed, and he was half-tempted to create ear plugs just for it to cease. His eyes meandered on the pathways though, on the darker throngs outside torch light, on the potential for more than just siren calls and wails of strange squirrel interactions – imagining intertwining vines, entangled knots, and any other monsters lurking in the midst. “In the middle.” If they ever made it there; enticed by the notion of flying above and over, uncertain if there was a trap in those plagues and canopies too.

The world was unpredictable, even so in the way that the echoes of the squirrels grow brighter and brighter, and Haai spends her time puffing smoke and bits of flame toward the offending creatures should they veer near – she’s cautious, however, aiming to prevent the entire labyrinth from burning to the ground, keeping it as close as possible yet still a warning. To let the squirrels know that she was a threat, not like the rest of them weren’t either. Feline forms, after all, did a fairly decent amount of damage to the rats that had infested the barracks.

He asks where they can find the herb, and he finally removes both hands from his pockets while they walk, aimed to be as prepared for anything should something come out and strike at them. He hadn’t arrived here at night, so he nods to Deimos when he mentions in the middle – a small frown crossing the corner of his lip. “Ah.” He rumbles at first, squinting toward the rows and rows, hoping that perhaps they’re going the right way. “This is where I fell in when I came here last year, not sure if that is any sort of advantage. I only came across you as I arrived to see if it looked the same as it did when I walked in.” He adds, daring a glance over toward the General.

Haai was her own brutal force and measure, granted a nod of approval by the Sword as her flames and ferocity kept the squirrels away, though he spied several notching themselves along hedgerows, flicking his torch in their direction for good measure. It was difficult to tell in the lack of much ambient light if they were nearing the middle, if they were getting any closer, or if this was a roundabout way of getting them more and more lost. Everything looked the same, similar patterns, similar frameworks, thorns and vines, knotted, gnarled branches, stones pressed into the sanction, not a single secret revealed.

However, if Sunjata had arrived here in the previous year, perhaps a bit of familiarity still remained. Deimos wasn’t much help or assistance in that regard; landing amidst the Spire and immediately heading to a bar (where he met Rexanna and too many things came flooding back). “Does it?” There’d been rumors of the Labyrinth’s potential for change and alterations, as if it had a mind of its own, could shape and shift into whatever decree it liked. If so, perhaps they’d be very lucky to get anywhere; and the damning situation clambered at the back of his mind, too tenacious, too obstinate, too defiant, to sink before they’d truly begun.

Sunjata doesn’t have the magic that Deimos harbors, nor does he have the flame that Haai can offer, but as they walk and the General passes the torch nearby a huddle of the squirrels, he can’t help but to pause and reach for his boot, pulling out a hidden dagger among them all, palming it in his scarred hand – just in case. They continue, and he explains that he’d stumbled across Deimos in the search of whether it looked the same, and as he glances around there’s a slight frown that finds him.

Parts of it look the same, but there’s also parts that are different.” Annoyed by this fact, he looks to one of the gnarled trees, marked differently but ever so slightly, as if the leaves were a slightly different hue than the rest as a path comes up that they could take a different turn. His brows draw together slightly before he sighs lightly, trying to recall what he’d done on the way out of this ridiculous place. “I think we should take a left here.” He murmurs quietly, pausing to peer at the dark path ahead, uncertain. “I do recognize that tree, though.
