we're all a little weird and life's a little weird and
when we find someone whose weirdness is compatible with ours

Libraries, you have learned, are full of paper.

It's for this reason you come today, despite your general aversion to man-made structures and their interiors. The Atheneum is a particularly egregious example: nothing grows in here, and if it so much as tries it is immediately squashed and scrubbed by overeager librarians. It's a pity, because there's so much to learn from the things that live, but the human-animals are a fiercely territorial sort, you've learned.

Anyway. After uneasily making your way into the Atheneum and claiming a table near a wide, bright window, you settle down into your true purpose here: drawing. Specifically, sketching out a custom that you are well aware of, but that you've realized many people here know next to nothing about.

A few hours pass this way, by which time you've filled four pages with surprisingly detailed illustrations and covered your fingers and face with smudges of charcoal. Now you are halfway through your sixth image, a sketch of people with baskets full of sunlight offering them up to the sky. Your tongue is clenched between your lips; your brows are furrowed in concentration; you're squatting indelicately on your seat, bare feet tucked beneath you.

In short you look ridiculous, but hey- you're too caught up in your own little world to notice if anyone has come to judge.

watch her dance, she beckons you
fair warning: leave her to herself
She hadn’t gone back to the library since her encounter with Wessex; put off by the experience as a whole, by the ruffled edges, by the seething nuances and anarchy slipping into her blood. So she took her time, ensuring she didn’t go during the evening or lantern light, avoidance of the most ridiculous, hoping to retrieve the staff book for another venture into its accord and information.

Except she was ultimately distracted while wandering, while humming, while bridging over pathways and spines of books, fingers unfurling along edges, skipping down lanes and rows while Fangorn still doggedly pursued. She’d brought her staff with her, in case anyone would let her practice in the Atheneum (which meant she’d also be avoiding the locals who knew her from when she assisted with repairs), a bright tune under her breath, a singsong decree –

And then she saw Kai, and completely forgot what she was supposed to be doing.

He seemed to be rooted in deep concentration along the sunshine pillars and windows, and she tilted her head, pondering if she should be bothering him or not. But then Fangorn went ahead, grumbling and howling when he recognized the fellow youth, ambling and rolling towards his chair, hissing from below its wooden expanse. So Melita followed, unfurling slowly enough to look embarrassed on interrupting his sketching, glance going to his pile of papers. “Hello,” she remarked into the void. “What are you working on?”

Somehow in the last adventure you had rather failed to give Fangorn his due attention; this time you react to the pumpkin with appropriate enthusiasm, your concentration broken by its rumbling approach. "Hullo, Fangorn!" you greet the gourd, far too loudly for the quiet library (even soft, your voice seems to pierce the silent house of knowledge like a spear).

Then you glance up to see his partner, and find yourself grinning a little too brightly at the girl, some color rising on your face. Your last adventure had been fun, but also difficult, topics broached you maybe would have been better off leaving alone. But you cannot help your curiosity around the fiery nymph; running your coal-smudge hand over your neck, you glance down at your art. "Oh, uh... I'm drawin' stuff about the capturin' the sun myth. I was gonna give 'em to Safrin. Wanna... wanna help?"

Fangorn took the appreciative greetings with his own, allowing more hissing and grumbling to echo forth from a twist and turn of his gaping mouth; had the Atheneum been filled with more inhabitants they might’ve received several stern warnings based on back and forth vocalizations. Melita muffled the slightest laugh, shaking her head at the gourd’s antics, picking him up so he could have closer access as she shuffled forward.

His smile was disarming in its brightness, so she dropped the slow, proceeding ventures and unfurled into her own radiant form, smile growing broader, sunshine radiance even after every other calamity invoked and stuck into her ribs. Slipping forward meant she could glance at the art too, careful inspection and introspection. “Wow, these are wonderful!” And she meant it too, impressed by the nature of his drawings, sketches, and outlines – though not an expert artist by any means. At his offer though, she placed Fangorn on the table, and grabbed a chair to slide over, any amount or ounce of shyness gone, vanquished, whittled away. “Of course! What do you need me to do?” Her eyes scanned over the portions of the legend he’d already detailed, fingers closing over contortions of charcoal, ready, willing, and able. She’d make no mention of this to Bastien, for the Ascended would likely drag her to the Artist’s Sanctuary again (and darn, she’d already forgotten to pick up her own work).

Her effervescence is a balm to your uncertainty and anxiety; you mirror her grin with one of your own, glad to have the shadows of your last encounter so effortlessly washed away. Her praise is met with a reddening of your cheeks beneath the constellations of freckles, happiness clear in your shining brown eyes. "Thanks! I wanted 'em to be good." Which is perhaps a little boastful from anyone else, but for you the statement of fact is as straightforward and humble as any bashful deference.

She agrees to help, which has you somehow smiling broader as you bounce up on your toes. "Great! You can draw whatever you want- I was doin' the myth about the sun, but anythin' you think Safrin might like." Which is beyond you, never having met the herald, but maybe she knows better. "Have you ever met her? Or the other heralds? I only talked to Frey so far."

She thought nothing of the comment of him wanting his sketches and pictures to be good. She’d assumed that of anyone striving forward in whatever area; wanting to be great, wanting to be grand, wanting to be better. It was how she’d lived and breathed anyway, a hum floating its way, a low warble, from her throat while her eyes ghosted and coasted over any images that required something more to them. Here and there, she grabbed hold of certain aspects of the myth, capturing the sun, whittling away baskets, all leading to the midnight gathering…speculating for a time on one of the more final pieces. Gently and softly, her hands delicately placed on the charcoal, she began to add stars, constellations, and galaxies to the backdrop, intending for it to be as stunning as the goddess mentioned.

Her eyes only lifted when he asked about the heralds, a quick nod, some unsettled excitement brewing over her smile. “I just did the other evening! She’s wonderful! I’ve also met Ludo.” And she wouldn’t be able to say enough about the latter. Her gaze solidified back to her picture, enamored for a moment at the notion of the surroundings and scenery, striving to replicate what she’d seen across the tundra’s night sky. “I saw Frey at a wedding recently.” Here her face fell into the slightest of frowns, a furrowing of her brow at how ridiculous the entire thing had been, and not wanting to fall into the folds of discussing something she would’ve rather seen go up in flames. “What did you think of Frey?” She’d been warned away from them a multitude of times from different sources, so all she had were spirals of apprehension and the unknown.
