Vai had agreed to take Remi out, as it was. She'd promised to keep an eye on him as he shifted into his lion form, but said she also had an idea of what the two of them could do to relieve a bit of his pent-up stress. Following along obediently, other than going somewhere where others weren't (for their safety of course), Remi had no idea why they were going towards the fields.

Until they arrived of course.

As they did, he saw the normally mundane and rather dismal looking field basically transformed into a gourd-saturated nightmare. Only...both alchemist and huntress had encountered these gourds before, and they weren't that terrible to deal with, as long as one paid attention.

Looking towards Vai with a mischievous twinkle in his pale gaze, he looked back across the field. "I see. What better way to entertain a lion than with big bouncing balls, hmm?" He quipped with a sideways grin.

Living with Devrum, a surprising amount of Vai's life revolved around big bouncing balls, so she couldn't help but giggle as she heard the term slip from Remi's lips - though whether he would get that her mind had drifted to unsavoury places was entirely up to him. Still, standing in the fields before the sea of bobbing, slightly murderous pumpkins, it was difficult to feel serious.

Yes, they were letting the lion out to play as it were, and yes she had chosen somewhere specifically out of the way... and yes, Vai had one of Devrum's axes as well as her bow and arrows with her. But she'd promised Remi the next time they met it would be a good time, and she was keen to follow through on it.

"Well," she said, grinning and nodding out at the fields, "there's only one way to find out, right? Shift away, and we'll see how your feline side feels about this mess."

Shift away. She made it sound so easy, and Remi desperately tried to hang onto the breezy sound of her words as if that would make the task all the easier. He was relieved that she'd brought proper precautions and did indeed trust her to use them if the situation called for it.

Walking a few feet away from her so that if things went sideways immediately she'd have ample distance to defend herself, Remi took a steadying breath. I am fine. He thought to himself, clearing his thoughts of any unwanted distractions or unnecessarily rampant emotions. Despite all that had happened to him lately, Remi was surprisingly good at compartmentalizing. Pinching the bridge of his nose, Remi took one final breath before letting his hands drop to his sides and focusing internally.

Slumping forward his body began to change. The shift was less elegant than when he became a hawk because 1. he wasn't as practised and 2. he was becoming something four-legged. Even so, his body elongated, bulked up, and became tawny and furred. Facing away from Vai, the lion stood still for a moment while internally Remi mentally shifted, making sure that he had control of his faculties. Once he was sure he did, he flicked his tail once and turned a maned-head over his shoulder and nodded once.

Feeling as though he was bursting with energy, Remi ran forward. The gourds might have been strangely quick, but he was faster. Leaping at one of them, it completed exploded within his paws as the full weight of his body slammed down upon it. Covered with orange-goo rather than blood, Remi was happy to give in to this predatory instinct to chase and kill.

Vervain was quiet to allow Remi to concentrate, taking a few steps back from him and absently letting her hand grasp the axe - just in case. As always she turned her attention elsewhere as he shifted, the mild-mannered man she knew becoming into the beast she had seen in the pit. Vai swallowed, glancing up only to see Remi nod and bound away into the fields. Her fingers slipping away from the axe handle, she let out a breath she hadn't realised she'd been holding.

In fact, a small smile ghosted across her face as she watched the lion bound after the angry little squash, huge tawny paws reducing it to pulp. Taking up a large stick, it didn't take Vai long to join him, the former huntress whacking at a gourd that bounced at her to send it tumbling in Remi's direction. Like a big ball of yarn.

Spinning, Remi's muscles coiled. His pupils dilated and his breathing slowed. Behind him his tail flickered ever so slightly, adjusting his balance in ways he could not have verbally explained. When he pounced it was precise and agile, claws extended ready to catch the ball which had been rolled his way. The gourd was suddenly gone and in its wake was a happy-lion face covered in orange. Normally a fan of squash, in this body the vegetable didn't taste quite as good as he remembered, and with a comical flail, the lion tried to spit the bit of gourd that had gotten into his mouth, out.

Trotting a few steps towards Vai, Remi lowered his head beneath her hand to force it on top of his skull. This was the easiest way for him to try and communicate to her that he did have control over this shape.

"Oops!" Vai laughed softly as Remi pounced for the squash, only to have it pulp beneath his teeth and claws. Fun this might be (and despite her nerves, she had to admit it was fun) but she hadn't accounted for just how strong the lion would be, and how fragile the gourds would appear beneath his giant paws.

Straightening up, she smiled to him as he padded over to her, not quite knowing what to expect and bracing horribly for the worst. So when the lion butted against her hand - and having ridden on a bear, somehow this was still a very humbling experience - she relaxed considerably.

Her fingers scritched at the tawny mane, finding an ear to fuss somewhere under all the fur. "I reckon I could grab a few without getting bit, if you want to squash some more of them." She smirked down at him.

Raising himself up to accept the fussing, Remi sighed contentedly happy that he hadn't yet harmed Vai nor had any inclination at all to do so. Though he couldn't smirk back at her and thought that perhaps roaring would be a bit too unnerving given just how new this experience was for the both of them, Remi merely bobbed his head.

In what could only be described as an awkward gallop, Remi made his way across the field. Being in this body was exceedingly strange, and while instinct alone was keeping him more or less balanced and upright, his own man-mind kept confusing the movements making them jerky. Eventually though he put some distance between the two before laying down in the grass. Though lions were not from a part of the world even remotely similar to this, the arid climate within the bubble and the fact that they were nearly through Leafchange meant that Remi blended in more or less alright.

Let the gourds fly.

And fly they would.

Vervain smiled as she watched Remi lollop off into the grass, arching an eyebrow as he seamlessly blended in with the landscape at a moment's notice. She'd have needed all her experience as a tracker to spot him, should she be so inclined, and frankly she was more interested in collecting pumpkins for him to play with.

It was a laughing Vai that grabbed up the vegetables, having to hold them carefully so as not to get bit as she hurled them off into the grasses, one by one. They chattered and screeches as she threw them away, much like annoying orange fireworks, but as far as hunting went this was dirt easy.

Though his lion senses were not digestively interested by the gourds, his need to follow and chase and kill was roused. As the gourds rolled towards their certain fate, Remi simply waited as his mind implicitly went through all sorts of calculations that even as a scientist would leave Remi fumbling to describe.

When finally his body judged the timing was right, the lion appeared like a blur of golds and browns, streaking forward. With a swipe and pounce combination, Remi obliterated the smallest of the gourds in one go. Lunging forward, he lowered his head and locked his jaws around the second as he continued to run forward, tossing his head back. Jumping into the air mid stride, his forepaws came up to tear the gourd out of his mouth, subsequently tearing it in half.

As he landed he slowed his pace, merely trotted towards the third as its rolling grew slower and it frantically tried to right itself and snap its teeth towards the lion. With a feline grace, Remi extended a paw and with delicious gentleness, batted the pumpkin over. Rolling with teeth flashing as it did so, the gourd gave a shriek of displeasure before being stopped by Remi's other paw which batted it back again.

Vai had been so busy throwing the pumpkins that she barely got to enjoy Remi destroying them as an oversized pussy cat. She did, however, catch him as he trotted to get the last one she'd hurled in his direction, grinning as the gourd squawked its annoyance between the lion's batting paws. "Quit playing with your food," she scolded playfully, beaming at him and jogging up to join him, kicking another stray pumpkin away among the grasses as she did so.

Their playground was pretty slippery and gross now - an issue when their playthings were full of pulp. "Maybe we ought to move on elsewhere?" she suggested, chuckling and folding her arms across her chest. Considering how terrifying the lion had been from the pit, the difference now was like night and day.

Quite playing with your food. He could have predicted that she was going to say that, and despite how corny it was, if he could have grinned he would have. And broadly. With a deep rumbling roar, Remi verbally agreed as best he could and trotted after Vai.

The few pumpkins that came across their path were dispensed in a fairly peculiar way by the lion: he licked them to death. Having discovered this aspect of his new body while cleaning some of the blood off of his paws in the pit, his tongue was actually quite rough, but not only that, almost barbed. The flesh of the gourds didn't stand a chance as Remi flayed them to ribbons in a matter of licks.

As the fields began to bleed away into the woodlands, Remi noticed something moving out of the corner of his gaze. His lion's eyes were sharp, but they weren't so keenly attracted to movement the way his hawk-eyes were, and he found himself scanning the dense trees uncertainly for several moments. His tail lashed behind his body irritatedly as his amber eyes scoured the trees for movement.

And then he saw it.

Not it.

Her.

With a throaty growl the big cat tensed dramatically, predatory eyes growing large and black. Though it was daylight, he could see her clearly now: his mother holding a lantern, unnaturally covered in shadow.

Licking pumpkins to death. This was certainly an afternoon of play that Vervain would not soon forget. She was laughing as they traversed the fields and she watched the lion pounce and attack and bat the vegetables about. In fact, she was fairly relaxed in her stroll beside him, enjoying the Leafchange sun on her back and the long grasses around them. Occasionally a squash would bounce up to try and sink its teeth into her, and Vai would bop it towards Remi so he could take care of it.

By the time she realised how close to the woodlands they were it was too late. Not that she remembered that it was this particular place that Remi had seen the shade of his mother - an error that was swiftly rectified now. "What's wrong?" she asked, noting the lion's irritation and glancing up towards where his gaze was fixed.

Her mouth went dry instantly - the woman shrouded in shadow holding a glowing lantern... Vai would have to be very foolish indeed not to put two and two together now. "Remi," she said softly. "Remi, come on. Let's go another way, yeah?"

His tail flicked back and forth, and given that he was already in a predator's body, his senses were more than on alert. The lion hardly heard Vai, but somewhere in his brain Remi was vaguely aware of what was happening and what she was urging. Leave. They needed to go before she-

-Remi.

Her voice made his knees weak and his loins suddenly feel flooded with icewater. Simultaneously the taste of blood was vivid in his mind and in response his mouth started to water. Taking a predatory step foward, Remi snarled at the image revealing long white teeth that remained even as the sound died away. His tail lashed exaggeratedly as his eyes narrowed and his pupils dilated. Taking another step, and then another and another, Remi broke into a slow jog towards  the image.

Hallucination, trick, whatever. Lead me to the swamp again and I will cut your throat again the lion's mind sang sweetly as Remi filled his lungs with gulp after gulp of air as his speed only increased more. Weaving effortlessly between the trees, Remi couldn't tell if he wanted to fight this or not. The sight of his mother was perplexing and obviously harrowing, but what would happen if he caught up to her again? Would the god appear once more? Did Remi even want that?

"Remi!"

Unaware of the fight going on in the lion's mind, all Remi saw was him bolt towards the shade in the trees. Regardless of his plan - whether it was to follow her or to kill her (again) she didn't know - but she knew that Remi in his right mind wouldn't want to be anywhere near her. Drawing a shaky breath and without any time to consider her options, certainly unable to keep up with the beast as it broke into a run, the former huntress chose a path that she considered right... but difficult.

Don't let it hit him anywhere important...

With prickling eyes, Vervain drew her bow and nocked an arrow in one fluid movement, tracking the lion in the trees before letting it fly, aiming for his flank. Something had to stop him. She just hoped it was worth it.
