Provost Silversmith had offered to conduct introductions at the VlamVloed, but he was also a busy man, in need of being several places at once, it seemed. Quanil was glad to take directions to the place and wait for the provost's business to conclude. Mayhaps they would figure out what to do about things on their own, and the provost would have one less worry.

They found a house, thought back over the directions, and hesitated between knocking and simply opening the door. After a few seconds' indecision, they tried the handle, and the door opened easily for them. They heaved a sigh of relief at seeing what was quite definitely a "public house" and not, as they'd feared, a private one.

Quanil crossed the threshold and looked around for somewhere comfortable to pass the time. They chose a table near the middle, and pulled out a seat for themselves where they could see who entered, thus putting their back to the bar. Their parents had always discouraged entry into bars and pubs, feeling that the temptation to wastrelry - is that a word? I'll have to find out. Maybe the provost knows? - was too strong there. If there was anything worse than curiosity, it was idleness. So Quanil had no idea what the customs here were, what was expected of them (other than the expectation of paying for food, drink, and room). But they had decided that this was a "public house" - from whence derived 'pub' - and so they would treat it as a house that all manner of people could, at least temporarily, call home. Thus they made themselves, more or less, at home.

They'd brought paper and pencil with, to make a list of places to start looking for Freina, to make a list of things they wanted or needed to accomplish, to make lists in general. There was something comforting about lists: they settled the frenetic chaos of Quanil's mind, helped them to focus. And striking off an item completed was usually a great joy. Not sure how I'll feel about striking off items on the 'Find Freina' list, though. That would mean she wasn't there, and they'd rather conclude that particular quest quickly.

So they started with the Quests list (as they thought of it): tasks that wanted or needed doing. 'Find Freina' was at the top of it, of course, and after they finished this list, they could proceed to drawing up that one. After a moment's thought, they added 'Wastrelry?' as the second item. They whispered it out loud to themselves, finding it amusing but a bit squiggly to say. It's probably not a word. But they'd wait to find out for sure.

Quanil would contentedly go on in this manner until interrupted, occasionally lifting their head to stare through the ceiling in thought, then bend back to their paper (even if they didn't always write anything down).

Having an uninterrupted few hours to themselves, Quanil was able to focus on their lists.

Quests List
  • Find Freina
  • Wastrelry? Likely not a word after all
  • Apologize and explain to family
  • Find place to sleep
  • Copy texts
  • Read more books
  • Figure out how to get necessary items

And then, there was, of course, the second list: Find Freina, which just had a list of places to look, starting with the most obvious and working down.

They stood and stretched and gathered up their things. There was a lot to do, and they'd best get to it.

{Finished}
