After his interrogation from the strange, young agents, Josh had headed out into the Outskirts, hoping to find some answers if he wandered out far enough. A radio tower perhaps, or more of the black tall structures, something that might give him some bearings or a better answer about the world he was in.

Well, it's either an alternate dimension, another planet or Europe.

Having walked for at least an hour, he was no closer to finding any answers. He'd seen a few fields, the crops in which were both recognisable yet somehow just off; had studied the stone that made up the few walls that dotted across the region - not any kind he was familiar with. Everything was just not quite right, just off; his alternate dimension theory was beginning to feel more and more accurate.

Finally deciding he was losing time walking he could be spending thinking, gathering supplies, he sat on one of the unrecognisable walls and pulled the polaroid photo out of his pocket again, began to once more study it. The development had to be complete by now, but it still seemed washed out and foggy, not because of bad film, Josh suspected - because the phenomenon it captured was not seeable by human eyes or lenses.

Being back in the Hollowed Grounds was strange, after Torchline. Drab, washed out. Boring, really. Nate was wandering, trying to avoid anywhere populated for a bit before he actually settled in again. The fields were maybe they most boring part of the grounds, but had the advantage of being sparsely populated, and marked out enough that he couldn’t wander into somewhere he wasn’t wanted.

Of course though, Nate had barely made it anywhere, and there was a person, intruding on his brooding. Normally, he would brush past without a word, he planned on brushing past without a word. Then he noticed the scrap of paper clutched in the strangers hand.

”Holy shit.” He stopped, leaning down, noticing for the first time the surprisingly modern clothes the man wore. ”Is that a polaroid?

Just as Nate was determined to ignore Josh in favour of his brooding, Josh was happy to ignore Nate in favour of studying his photo; he didn't need to talk to every person here, after all. Any good investigation needed down periods, times when you digested the information you had received thus far. Besides, he was wondering if the ones he'd met so far were paid actors, and was beginning to get somewhat bitter about humouring them.

That was, until Nate asked his question. Josh stared with wide eyes, slowly lowering the polaroid down and looking over the man, whom he could have sworn had a Jersey accent. "Yes. ...Explain to me how you know that." He asked slowly, carefully, not wanting to reveal his immediate suspicion too easily.

Nate couldn't help but lean back a bit, finding the strangers stare a little too intense for his liking. He tried to force a grin onto his face, tried to pull together his usual confidence. "You could try asking nicely y'know." The words came out a little rougher than he wanted, but Nate chalked it up to lingering discomfort. Really, the only reason he hadn't walked off was because he was more curious about the polaroid than he was uncomfortable. For now.

"They had them where I came from, originally." Nate craned, trying to catch a glimpse of what the picture was of, hoping, somewhere deep inside, to see something familiar. "How'd you get one?"

As far as Josh was concerned, he had asked nicely; far more politely than he usually demanded information from strangers. This being the case, he just raised his eyebrows at Nate's words, thinking him a pretty sensitive person.

He turned the photo to let Nate see it. It seemed the people here were aware of portals, knew he knew as well, so there wasn't any danger in showing it. Of course, it was not a very interesting or well-developed image, faint lines of street lamps and trash in a yard almost entire blown out by the bright white light in the centre. "I took it. With my camera. The camera did not come with me." Josh frowned at this, more emotion than he usually showed - the lack of his polaroid to record the things around him was grating.

"Where did you come from? Did you come here through a portal too? You sound American." Josh's own voice was carefully removed from any particular accent most of the time, having trained himself to speak as plainly as he could.

Nate has to resist the urge to try and reach out and snatch the Polaroid, too excited about the prospect of seeing some kind of technology again. It was a shitty picture, but there was enough familiar in it to make Nate smile. ”Good reflexes man.” He said brightly, leaning back once he’d drunk his fill of nostalgia. ”Shitty about the camera though. Makes sense, but still sucks.”

Nate cocked his head, a brow raising at the questions. He hadn’t had a lot of experience with people fresh through the portals after all. ”Yea, I came through a portal too. A lot of people did, but not all from the same place, least as far as I can come.” It was exciting that the stranger seemed to be from somewhere familiar, as far as he knew this wasn’t usually how that happened. ”I am American. From... around Philly. What about you?.” He couldn’t pin down anything exact, though something about the man seemed almost familiar.

"I always keep it..." Josh reflexively reached to his chest, where his camera would usually be hanging - of course, it wasn't. He awkwardly put his hand back down, frowning. "I make sure to take photos of anything of interest."

"How many have come through the portals?" He asked, wondering if they had all been actively searching out dimensional travel like himself, or if the other lucky bastards had just happened across it. If the number was in the hundreds, maybe thousands, it was likely a good portion of Earth's missing person cases could be explained; a new angle to try with the police.

Philly. Made sense, with the accent. "Staten Island. When you were on Earth...what year was it?" He asked, curious to see if they had jumped at different times, or if it had been one event that had taken them all from Earth, then dropped them here gradually.

”Do you have any other ones?” Nate asked, trying to not seem too interested in the familiar technology. Even if it was just a bright light and some washed out details, it might be nice to try to get a little piece of home for himself.

His brows furrowed as he thought, wondering if he even knew the answer to Josh’s question. ”I dunno... how many exactly? Not necessarily a lot, but outlanders, we are a pretty conspicuous bunch.” It was always the smallest group that had the loudest voices, wasn’t it? ”Sometimes it’s harder to tell, people come from all kinds of worlds, and I guess some of them are pretty close to this place.”

”No shit?” Not only was the stranger from the same place, he was from somewhere Nate had been. ”We’re practically neighbours, far as this place is concerned.” He laughed, the sound ending in a hum as he considered the idea of them coming from different times. ”It was 1981. November, if that helps.”

"No." Even if he did, Josh wouldn't have shared them with Nate. His polaroid pictures were often of ghouls, creatures he'd caught out, paranormal occurrences; not the sort of thing you showed just anybody.

The lack of specific information was irritating, but one thing Nate had said struck Josh as interesting. Holding his notebook up to make some quick scribbles, he asked: "Conspicuous? Has there been conflict between the newcomers and the locals?" Wouldn't be surprising. No one liked new people showing up at their home.

Admittedly, Josh hadn't been in Staten Island for a very long time, but he smiled and gave Nate a nod anyway - if the man felt a connection to him through their hometowns, it meant he might be more likely to tell secrets. Though his face fell into surprise as Nate told him the year - nearly 20 years back from his own time. "...I...see. I wonder--" Breaking off, he wrote in his notebook: Did he remain in my world? A copy? older?? did 16 yrs pass here btn our arrivals??

"It was 1997, for me." He finally said back, figuring Nate would probably like to know and not seeing a reason to lie about it.

Nate's brow raised again as the other man lifted up a notebook, god he really seemed to be prepared for anything huh? Rolling a shoulder in a loose shrug, Nate answered as well as he could. "Seems like a bunch of he said she said. No one thinks their being listened to, no one wants to listen to anyone else. The usual issues." It wasn't like he'd really been involved in any of it. The less he was the better honestly.

Something about the strangers smile made Nate uneasy, like he was being tricked somehow, but he did his best to not let it show, shifting slightly and cocking his head to the side. His grin returned as surprise blanketed the other mans features instead of the smile, leaning in as if that could coax more information from the other man. He tried to strain, to see what was being written down, what he'd said that had been worth mentioning.

The realization that time had kept going without him all but knocked the breath out of Nate. He blinked, brow furrowing as he tried, desperately, to absorb what he'd been told. "Fuck." He said softly, then again, louder. "Fuck!" How else was he supposed to react? "I... what did I miss?"

"Listened to or listening about what? Just gimme the basics." Josh asked, preparing to write a bullet point list of things that he could look into further as time went on. Nate was actually a good source, as someone that seemed uninterested in the drama; he had likely absorbed more than he'd thought, but he wouldn't be bias and give incorrect information.

He angled his notebook away from Nate as the man leaned forward to look at it, always private about his notes and what he kept. His notebooks he guarded with his life, often burning them after a year or so once he had divided the information within into useful or not.

Nate's reaction to the year was expected enough. As for what he missed, though...Josh took a moment to think it over. "There's the internet. Can talk to anyone in the whole world from your own house. Using a computer. Porn and games on there, too. Idiots think it won't matter, but it will." Nate seemed young and virile enough to appreciate that. "Other than that...John Lennon got shot. AIDs is still a big deal. President got caught being blown. You gotta ask me specifics if you wanna know anything else."

”As far as I know, the naturals feel like everyone coming here is trying to mess up what they’ve been doing for who-fucking-cares how long, and outlanders feel like their ideas aren’t appreciated cause everyone’s too set in their ways to consider it.” It was a stupid argument, as far as Nate was concerned, but he wasn’t involved in it too much.

Nate scoffed as the man angled his notebook away, his hands coming up in faux apology. ”Just wanted to know what was so interesting you had to save it for later man, Jesus.”

The moment of thought was almost a moment too long, Nate suddenly restless now that he was so close to something some scrap of his old life, some knowledge that life had kept going. That maybe, somehow, things had gotten better. And, to start, it was. A smarmy grin spread over his face as he tried to imagine the internet, shitty b-movies coming to mind immediately. Lennon... he shrugged. ”I was more of a Stones guy anyway.” He interrupted, laughing.

The laugh faded quickly, Nate’s eyes narrowing, growing almost suspicious. He nodded along to the rest of the news, taking a moment to digest things. ”I guess it would be a long shot to ask about any specific names, huh?” He joked, hollowly.

Standard sort of argument for somewhere with an influx of immigrants, Josh thought, nodding and not bothering to write it down until he could learn some more specifics. This was a time-old conflict, and while the 'immigrants' being dimensional travellers was certainly a twist, he was sure a lot of the talk was the same.

"Private." He said back to Nate, keeping his notebook angled away. Especially since Nate was from Earth and could understand more of his notes and scribbles, it was important he kept them secret.

He shrugged as for Nate's music preferences, not liking either himself. Without knowing Nate's interests, it was hard to know what news was relevant - though specific people did seem like a stretch, Josh had more of a chance of knowing than most, having spent a lot of time in his life stalking investigating individuals and organisations. "You could try. If I know I'll tell you."

The snap of ’private’ did nothing but pique Nate’s curiosity even more than it already was. Though, if he really wanted, he was sure he could hazard a guess at the paranoid scribbles contained within. Josh seemed like he’d stepped out of a B movie, a living cliche that Nate had never seen the likes of. It wasn’t worth the effort, really, so he lifted his hands in a half assed placation, and stepped back.

Might as well not step on too many toes when there was still something he wanted from the other man. Nate spent a moment considering, wondering if it was worth asking after his dad, when the chances were so slim. And, in the near impossible chance that Josh actually knew something about his father, did he really want to hear anything?

”William Wren?”
