Deimos
the resurrected sword
Hunting. Damaging. Destroying. Massacring. Rampaging. Those were age-old instincts, primordial vows, a cluster of anointments and consecrations burrowed deep into his soul. It was where he reached now as he threaded through the forest, as his massive paws settled into the earth, as desperation and distraction turned into something more vicious, more tangible. Out here it didn’t matter, because inherent blood would enrich and scatter their souls, predacious manners would slip into their psyches, and they could watch the world bleed, drown, without the rest of them fumbling into naught.

He waited to see if others would join, if the rest of the suffering world wanted a chance to brutalize, to slip mayhem into something they could orchestrate, control, unravel from the seams. While in human form he’d dragged his cart over to the fringes of the grove, settled it there for when they came back with meat, with things besides minds occupied by every other damned thing in this hellhole. And if it grew into silence, he’d maneuver on his own, serpentine into the enigmatic woods until he’d snagged and mauled, until something felt real again.

OLIVER
One of the shifts that Oliver had barely any experience with was his cat shift. Oliver wasn't entirely sure what it was or how this new body worked, which meant he had decided to go out and explore. The other two shifts were easy to figure out. His fox form clearly had good hearing and could dig pretty damn well. As well, his bird could....fly. It also had a strange beak. Those two were obvious, but the cat? He was struggling a small bit to figure everything out. As of right now, he had figured out that he had big teeth, a fluffy tail, and pretty big paws. Otherwise? Nothing.

It's what left him exploring the woods, using all of his senses to smell around and try and see what he could find. One scent did seem somewhat familiar, thus leading him to follow along a trail where he would find a wagon. Walking on over, his senses flared up and he saw a massive ass bear. Surely....this was an attuned right? Cautiously, he lowered his body to the ground to hopefully attempt to not be obvious.

His tail flicked slightly as his ears stayed perked and ready, Hello? Are you an attuned? He wasn't about to make a repeat mistake like he had with Sunjata. Immediately establish he is an attuned so he doesn't get mauled.

the flood
i lost all the air in my lungs to the screamin'
i lost all the love in my heart to the demons
Perhaps it was a terrible idea to join in on this. Perhaps, knowing Deimos, it might be closer to a death sentence. But he’s here to help, to atone for something, everything, nothing at all. But it was still something he wanted to do, he needed to do. And with a new shift in his arsenal, hopefully he wouldn’t be noticed. It would be far unlikely, however, as he drifts through the treetops with leathery wings.

He spots two creatures that absolutely don’t look like they belong together, a bear and a spotted cat of sorts. And he hears briefly as Oliver’s voice rings out, dark ears flickering toward the cat, then to the bear, watching the exchange carefully. And if he knew anything about the Outskirts, he knew that large predators were hard to come by. He’d watch the exchange carefully, quietly, trying to keep his attuned feelings to himself though there’s the hidden hint of exhaustion that laces its way through him.

He hangs upside down from a branch, peering at them from above, wondering if opening his mouth is a mistake. It probably is, but Deimos had been there for the disastrous hunt of before. And Deimos was still his General. Mentally, he withdraws as much as he can, ears flickering toward the bear and cat. My guess is yes. He rumbles down toward Oliver, sure that the quiet bear (quiet for now) is Deimos.

Forests were familiar terrain for Rance. Or, had been, before he’d been dragged from his world into another. Still, these woods were at least less chaotically wild than the Greatwood. The air smelled more natural, felt better beneath his wings. Exploring it felt a little bit less like he was risking his life.

That didn’t mean it was without its curiosities. The seemingly abandoned cart had been the first, misplaced and alone near the tree line. The second came in the form of a spotted cat unlike any he’d ever seen facing off with a bear of all things. His eyebrows would have risen to his hairline had he been human. Instead, he circled the pair before landing on a branch above them to watch, crooking his head to one side. He missed the smaller bat completely — something he might have seen as immediate easy prey if he’d noticed it — attention instead caught by the strangeness of the two larger animals. Was this normal for these woods?

Jigano didn't spend enough time in his foxform these days. He'd spent more in his dragonshape, learning to overcome the trepidation he'd felt after the Voice's divine restraints on that body, or in the form of a raven, making use of swift wings to travel from one place to the next. His fox shape, though, was the one that was most natural to him, the one he'd had since birth. Sometimes he had to go back to basics to find himself again, and that was why he had slipped away from his duties as Provost and his general meddling in the lives of friends and strangers to take some time to himself and just be for a bit, hunting mice and rabbits through the underbrush while Isuma scouted ahead for shiny new beetles to add to her collection.

He hadn't expected to come across a large cart left unattended, but the scent around it was familiar, even when human footprints became bear pawprints. Curiosity had always been his downfall, and would likely be the death of him, so though he could have given the General a wide berth today, he instead chose to pad after, wondering what the stoic warrior was up to. It was their way, somehow, to always be there to assist in each other's projects and undertakings, some days closer, other days more distant. If Deimos didn't need his help he could be on his way, but if the other man could use a helping paw...

Well, that's what Jigano was there for, as Deimos had been there for him before.

What he hadn't expected was to reach an odd collection of animals already gathered. The bear and the cat he knew. Deimos, Oliver, good to see you, he called through the bond as he stepped into the little clearing with them, white fur harder to hide in summer. He thought he'd heard Sunjata's voice, too...

New shift, Flood? he asked cautiously, looking up at the raven perched above them, not yet seeing the bat hidden in the leaves and mistaking Sunjata for the newcomer (Rance) in the confusion. Isuma wasn't so sure, however, the gryphlet alighting on a nearby branch and watching the big black bird with cautious curiosity but no recognition.

Deimos
the resurrected sword
The reality of attuned natures were great in one aspect, and then somewhat foolish in the next. He’d always known who he was with when shifting – except for now, with new alterations, shapes, and faces, the view might have been totally unrecognizable. Small cats, bats, more ravens, and then the only familiarity was the ivory fox (Jigano; and how odd to think it was a relief to see him). His ursine eyes addressed them all, staring from one to the next, out of place notions the only thing that ensured they were of the same nature – Attuned, ready to embark on the sojourn for food; save for a few more moments of well-placed titles and callings, rather than fraternize haphazardly into the unknown. I intended to go hunting, and his broad head nodded, indicating the cart where they’d be able to store their wares after. But perhaps we should introduce ourselves first. Then, of course, if some of them weren’t inclined to go scrambling through the forest for meals, they would be free to go. I am Deimos. His stare went back and forth again, presuming his name would be enough, and nothing else would be necessary – waiting for each newcomer to do the same.

He watches as more arrive – an out of place raven that Sunjata can’t quite tell is Attuned or not, and a pale fox. His steel gaze flits over the bear to the cat to the raven and finally the fox – a voice that’s familiar to him when the last time he’d seen the man had been under less than stellar circumstances. It seemed everyone here that he was aware of was one of those very same circumstances. Even poor Oliver had been around during Sunjata’s spiral, and… Well, things hadn’t quite gotten much better since then from the view of him, the word spread about him.

He fidgets a small amount as Jigano looks toward the raven, and he extends a membranous wing as he lets himself go from the branch he’d hung from to drift down to the side of the fox, somewhere between Oliver and Jigano, shifting to his panther form to regard the fox a bit better. He can always shift back, in the end, but for now perhaps this is easier. One of them. He answers Jigano easily, gaze flitting to Deimos with perked ears, trying his best to not be a victim in his hunt and regretting showing up to it all the same.

I'm Sunjata. He offers with a bit thicker of an accent, gaze leaving Deimos to glance at the cart – to look anywhere but the bear.

OLIVER
A familiar voice rang through his ears and the leopard's head turned around, looking around everywhere for where Sunjata could be. He didn't see an absolutely massive antelope, so that wasn't it, but he also didn't see a bright blue bird. So maybe he was hiding as his panther shift? Oliver tried sniffing at the air, but couldn't tell anything familiar. How odd...

His attention shifted over to Jigano who had managed to point out a vistor hat was assumed to be Sunjata. Hello Jigano, and hello....Sunjata? His head tilted as he looked up at the crow, clearly confused. Why would he get a second bird shift? What the fuck, Safrin?

When, of course, that absolutely wasn't the case. A small winged creature would fly down and land next to him who would soon shift into a familiar figure. With ears now perked up and eyes wide, the leopard flicked his tail in excitement and took a couple of steps closer to his friend, still paying attention to Deimos...sort of. I'm Oliver, His eyes shifted towards the stranger crow momentarily before he focused once more on Sunjata.

Trying to keep it just between him and his friend, he spoke as quietly as he could, hoping to not interrupt anything. Sunjata! It's so nice to see you! And look! I'm like.... a small version of you. He purred ever so softly as shifted his paws with excitement.

The bear he knew - and knew him - but it never hurt to make sure everyone knew each other, especially before beginning a hunt that would end in death. Anything large enough to entice Deimos's large shifts to the hunt was bound to be a dangerous prey, and being aware of each other was an important first step.

One that he appreciated all the more when Sunjata's mental voice came not from the raven, but from something else - a little piece of night that fluttered free of the leaves and drifted down to land in a splotch of dappled sunshine before shifting to a more familiar shape. Jigano took a startled step back before nodding his head cautiously to the bar owner. He hadn't yet heard the full story, but there rumors of a trip Sunjata had led...

One that had resulted in a newly-consecrated Shrine in the Temple.

One that had come back two members short. One of those members a dear friend.

Jigano wasn't sure how he felt about that at the moment, but his previous exchanges with Deimos had taught him both greater patience and greater humility, and so he stayed silent for the moment while he considered the Flood's appearance.

Oliver was the same as ever, though the fox noted how he fawned over Sunjata. That just left him, then, and...

Whoever was up in the tree with the little white and blue gryphlet. I'm Jigano, he confirmed, sharp blue eyes focused on the newcomer with avid interest, wondering who it would turn out to be.

A white fox joined the assembled group of animals and Rance was beginning to suspect that there was something less ‘natural’ about what he’d flown in on.  When the fox spoke, shock puffed up his feathers and he nearly lost his balance. All right, definitely not normal beasts. Which was, of course, when the fox looked up at him and spoke directly to him. The fuck?! He cursed, letting out a raucous caw at the same time. A caw he silenced when an obviously magical creature landed near him. He might have felt safe from the ground predators, but a winged one was another matter entirely. At least it didn’t seem to be looking at him as prey?

The spotted cat addressed him as well, seemingly mistaking him for someone else. Rance’s wings settled, but his feathers remained ruffled. I -- no, was his clipped answer, surprise and confusion turning to brief agitation. He was one of the Hidden, dammit, or had been before his forced relocation. Other shifters – Attuned? – shouldn’t have shocked him so much.

The bear – Deimos -- then mentioned his intention to go hunting and brought up introductions which seemed to mean it was an… open invitation? Feathers had finally begun to settle when a bat fluttered down and shifted into a large, black cat – the Sunjata he’d been mistaken for – causing the ones around his neck to fluff up all over again.  So, they definitely were like him, then. Or he was like them, since he wasn’t bettering on any of them being as new to this mess as he was.

Oliver and Jigano introduced themselves and then the attention was all on the raven. He looked away, feigning calm as he preened a few feathers back into place. Rance. Hey. He turned his head back to the group below, clacking his beak once.

Deimos
the resurrected sword
As the bat transformed, shifted again, into someone known, familiar, Deimos’ ursine form still managed to clench its jaw, closing the maw sharpened, and honed, by a series of dastardly teeth. A dominion, an air, of rampant frustration and vexation curled through his presence, pinpointed solely at Sunjata: that he’d dared to show his reckless, ridiculous features here, after all of the things he’d done lately. Murdering a cannibal they could’ve used for information (essentially, about the damned ice dragon up ahead). Losing Adam and Peter. Idiotically stumbling his way through the final bits of his quest, and still being rewarded for it, despite failure after failure. Perhaps he’d feel the weight of the Sword’s stare. Perhaps he’d realize soon after that it’d been a mistake to come.

Jigano, he pierced through their attuned bond, for the bard and bard alone. You may have to be the voice of reason today. A pause, as his eyes flickered to Oliver’s form, whom he hadn’t realized had blended himself into shifting and magic as well, and to the stranger Rance. Naught more was said, but heavily implied; it was likely Jigano knew what had happened. The man had a way of obtaining information.

Then he advanced, dangerously close to Sunjata, before proclaiming their next move to their strangely assembled crowd. We should scout first. Utilize your senses, see what game you can find. Go quietly, and use the attuned bond to let us know where you are, what you discover. He would go last – after watching where certain individuals roamed.

They introduce themselves, and Sunjata can feel the displeasure radiating from the General in such a force that his ears perk back slightly. It had been a mistake to come, but he was here now. He wasn’t going to leave when all he’d wanted to do was help, whether that resulted in something more than what Sunjata was anticipating was another story. He glances to Oliver when the leopard speaks, a pulse of worry piercing toward the cloud leopard. Indeed you are. He agrees.

But then, as Deimos levels his gaze on him alone, Sunjata remains in place. Of course he’s intimidated by Deimos, only a fool wouldn’t be. But all he could do was try to be better. He shifts on his paws a small amount, silent on his side of the bond for what seems like forever. You may not want to go with me, Ollie. He quietly sends to the Cloud Leopard as Deimos steps forward — towering over him and dangerously close.

He doesn’t shy away from the closeness of the General, though it may be foolish — he’s betting on the fact that Deimos might much prefer to not attract the attention in such a visible way. Far too open. So his ears flicker as he regards the General, standing fully onto his paws, and perhaps a bit too warily turning away from the General to pick a southwest direction.

It was becoming clear very quickly that, whoever these other four Attuned were, they had history. What little some of them were saying came loaded with enough atmosphere that Rance could practically taste the weight of stories between the glaring silences. While he wasn’t in a hurry to get in the middle of anyone else’s mess, he couldn’t deny that a little party of him wanted to ask what he might be missing. Deimos didn’t seem the type to spill a tale over a drink and Sunjata was definitely the other side of that mystery confrontation, but maybe one of the other two?

No matter how this went, Rance was glad he’d stumbled upon it. Not just because he had learned a bit about being an Attuned just in the few minutes since he’d flown in on the hunt, but also because inter-personal arguments could teach him as much about a new place as any helpful guides. Sure, they were a hell of a lot more likely to bite him in the ass, but that risk hadn’t scared him off yet.

Whoever Deimos was, he was obviously used to giving orders. Had Rance been in human form, he would have rolled his eyes. Instead, he just shifted on his perch — away from the small, white creature who had arrived with the fox, just in case — and turned his head to the side. Guessin’ by the cart back there, you want big game, right? He didn’t wait for an answer, the question hypothetical and more to ‘hear’ himself speak. Talking that way came as naturally as speaking aloud — because of whatever ‘bond’ Deimos mentioned? He made a mental note to ask someone eventually. And no matter what he found out, he’d have a lot to write down in his journal once the job was done.

The inky black raven took off from the branch with a croaking call, heading east. I’m not goin’ to run into basilisks or some shit out here, am I? He asked the group, partly to make conversation and partly to be prepared for the worst. Even if that forest didn’t seem as overtly threatening as the Wildwood, Rance wasn’t taking any chances.

Ah. Well. This was embarrassing. Apologies, Rance, for the confusion, the fox offered the raven once introductions were made. He saw the avian Attuned shifting away from the Isuma’s curious creeping towards him, and silently called the little gryphon down to join him on the ground so she wouldn’t encroach on the newcomer’s personal space. The little owlgryph gave a small peep of disappointment that she wasn’t going to get to play with a new friend today, but she obeyed and glided down to sit beside him.

Deimos’s silent communication met a flicker of surprise in the bond, followed by a pulse of understanding – and acknowledgment, if not agreement. After this, would you tell me what really happened? I’ve heard bits and pieces, mostly rumors… but Adam… Adam was my friend, too, he sent quietly to the big bear, emotions of loss and grief and uncertain temper roiling uncertainly beneath his words. He knew that Sunjata had led a group to Halo, hunting a dragon for the Temple… but the details of what had gone on in that cave and why Adam and Peter had remained behind were scarce.

He wasn’t entirely comfortable having this play out in front of Oliver and Rance, either, but Deimos knew what had happened, while the bard only had suspicions. Still, if it was Sunjata’s fault that Adam was now dead…

He would worry about that when the time came.

With a nod of confirmation towards the raven that bigger was indeed better, Jigano hopped to his feet and put his nose to the ground, heading south with Isuma – keeping Sunjata’s presence near to his senses on his right – and checking for scents or tracks of something big enough to be worth their time.

No basilisks in this world that I’ve run into yet, he offered to Rance as they began to part ways. But watch out for the Wicker Women – gnarled trees that wrap around anything that gets too close and eventually turns it into fertilizer. Keep an eye out for birds wrapped in branches or bones around the bases of particularly twisted trees, and try not to land on them.

Jigano goes south, checking for scent trails and keeping an ear out for Sunjata on his right.
