The Loreseekers’s Guild was one with an ever-shifting roster; members disappearing, some returning, and new ones joining as the seasons passed. In its early days its members had all had their own places to call home, either Naturals with family houses or Outlanders who had found places that they had fixed up and moved into. Recently, however, the latest influx of Seekers had all had somewhat different and unique circumstances. There had been no easy place to put them, and so most of them had ended up in the VlamVloed in one way or another. He was grateful to Sunjata for boarding them, but he felt that the Guild should take care of its own, and that meant taking action to make a haven for them.

Here, in the Atheneum, among the books and near the Guildhall, for instance.

A notice had been posted and spread by word of mouth, inviting the Loreseekers, allies, and friends to come help clean out and furnish some reading rooms and convert them to small but cozy living quarters for Guildmembers who didn’t have their own homes in the Settlement. Now Jigano waited near the door as people arrived.

As the volunteers came the bard smiled and greeted each. Once everyone was assembled he gave a slight bow and led the way up one of the staircases near the back of the building to the second floor, that broad platform that ringed the inside of the domed main library and allowed for further shelves and books above. As there were rooms below, tucked in amongst the stone walls, hiding spaces that had once held special collections or other dangers that were still being explored, so there were rooms above them as well.

”Thank you all for coming. I’m Jigano, Provost of the Loreseekers’s Guild, and we appreciate your help today. I’ve collected some furniture from donations and from the Ruins to get the places looking a little homier, but first there are quite a lot of books and shelves to move out of these rooms to make space for people to live there until they have a chance to find their own homes in the Domiciles.” He smiled apologetically over his shoulder as he led the way to their destination:  six doors close together, leading to five smaller rooms and one larger one. ”I’ve only poked my head into them briefly to make sure they were the right sizes, so we might find other problems to fix along the way. We’ll deal with them as they come, though. For now, pick a room and we’ll see what we have to work with.”

Please introduce yourselves and choose a room numbered 1 through 6, then wait for a description. Rooms 1 through 5 are smaller, room 6 is roughly twice the size of the others.

This PQ will update roughly every 3-4 days, or when everyone has posted.

2. Samuel
3. Quanil
4. Rance
5. Ronin
6. Loren

Quanil was there early, bright-eyed and bushy-tailed - though without the actual tail. On Caido, you had to be specific about that. They were not only glad to help out their guild, but hoping they could claim one of the cleared out rooms later. Let Freina have her own room at the VlamVloed, where things were a bit cramped for them and their sister just now.

They waved at Mr. Samuel with a small smile, and bowed to the provost. Is there some sort of official Loreseeker bow or way to acknowledge our leader? I probably would have learned it by now, so likely not. They just smiled at the rest of the group and brightened when they recognized Mr. Ronin. "Hello! Is Miss Sugar with you?" they asked as they gathered up.

After the provost's introductory statement, Quanil offered, "I'm Quanil, if you don't already know me. Um. I'm a Loreseeker." And they smiled because, as usual, they didn't know what else to do. "Thanks for coming to help us." Because they weren't sure if everyone here was a Loreseeker, and even if they were, it was still polite.

They chose room 3.

The Loreseekers aren’t the only ones that enter the space Jigano has picked out. Indeed, right on their heels many vampire gourds begin to filter in, with snarls, hisses, and growls. They fling themselves down the stairs to the rooms, nipping at the heels of anyone that passes by, trying to give them all a taste of their anger and frustrations.

Sam quite liked the idea of living in the Atheneum; had he not his own very lived in house, he fancied it might be quite nice himself. Still, it would not be fair to take a room from someone in need, so he came to help with no intentions of stealing a room for himself. It felt good to be able to contribute to something to help the community and he felt it would help his reputation as Natural Adviser as well, that he was helping the Outlanders find a place within their world.

However, on his way up to Jigano, he saw yet more vampire gourds and had to hold his breath for a moment (odd, since he didn't actually breathe that often) to stop himself from muttering a curse. Activating his barrier he continued up the stairs, taking a small joy in watching the few gourds nearby getting zapped; the things had proven themselves to be an absolute pest in the last few days and he was running out of patience.

Listening to Jigano's speech and saying hello to Quanil, he then went to choose one of the rooms; he chose one of the smaller ones, not wanting to overface himself with anything too challenging.

--

As Sam comes up the stairs he activates his barrier to zap some gourds. He picks room 5.

What better way to welcome him back to the Hollowed Grounds than a bunch of vampire gourds. Ronin had to resist the urge to roll his eyes, and as they came bouncing and hissing down the stairs, he was quick to show them the exit with the tip of his boot. It was only the fact that the Atheneum was the guildhall for the Loreseekers that prevented him from kicking them a bit harder - enough to send pumpkin guts everywhere, for instance. But that wouldn't be fair to Jigano, so the Dark Star kept his anger to himself.

Spotting the group gathered to listen to the Provost, he avoided Samuel entirely and gave a polite nod to Quanil. "Not today I'm afraid. I didn't want to risk her freezing any of the books." That and she'd be a pain to corral back to Torchline afterwards.

Hearing Jigano out, Ronin tossed him a lazy salute and headed away to pick one of the rooms. As he did so, a second Ronin Taliesin split out from his steps and joined him. If they were in for some heavy lifting, twice the number of hands should help.

Ronin conjures his astral projection for help moving things.

He chooses Room 6.

Loren wasn't a Loreseeker at the moment, maybe not ever again. But when he'd received notice that the Guild needed help, he still showed up. He was just in time to see the familiar figure of Ronin kicking some gourds into the main section of the Atheneum. Sighing, the healer summoned two wolves. Between them, his telekinesis, and his hands he was able to shoo a few more of the gourds away from the guildhall.

Only then did he move towards the meeting spot, dismissing his summons as he did. Giving Jigano a friendly smile, Samuel a clasp on the shoulder and a grin, Quanil a friendly nod, and the Dark Star a much more careful and much less friendly not, the Launceleyn moved to the opposite end of the group from the demi-god. Once there, Loren settled in to wait patiently.

As the bard led them to the second floor and gave them their instructions, the healer nodded. Then his eyes followed Ronin as he went to the farthest room. "I'll take one." It came out quickly, and the Launceleyn turned to head towards his room without letting anyone else speak.

Rance wasn’t in a rush to leave his room at VlamVloed, at least not yet. But he liked Jigano and everything the Loreseekers stood for, even if he was still learning what that was. So even though he didn’t think he’d be moving into one of these rooms, he was certainly willing to help out. It came with the added bonus of being able to meet other Loreseekers and those that they trusted. Rance still knew precious little about the people who were native to Caido and their customs, let alone any that might have come about because of Outlanders being tossed into the mix.

“Rance. Grenier,” he introduced himself with a nod to the group, committing to memory both faces and names. Working with strangers was par for the course for most of the construction work Rance had done. Of course, since everything seemed like it would be familiar and easy, that was when the snarling vegetables decided to intrude on the peace, right after the youngest of their number, Quanil, made it through to the rooms. Rance  gave them a snarl of his own, holding back as the other men strode forward. Soon enough ‘name’ and ‘face’ were soon joined by a listing for ‘magic’ as each took care of the gourds in their own way, for the most part pushing them aside as if they were an annoyance. It gave Rance time to note how high the damned things could jump, on top of providing him with a much more varied display of magic than he’d seen used yet. The summoned wolves, the duplicate, the crackling aura… Rance had none of those.

Taking advantage of the open space, Rance transformed into a raven and flew up to the second floor, and thus avoided the fucking flying, angry plant-life all together. He landed and shifted back into human form in front of room two, making a rude gesture at the gourds as soon as he had hands to do so.

The last to arrive, Amalia skirts carefully around the angry gourds, doing her best to both avoid aggravating them and avoid hurting them. There's already signs of carnage; she'll have to find some of the better preserved ones later to take home and use for the next week's bake. For the rest she attempts to compel them away, while Jyoti sings soothing starlight into the hall to ease tensions.

There's a surprising number of unfamiliar faces (read: two), making Amalia a little anxious as she finally reaches the assembled group. Sorry I'm late, is sent to Jigano, the baker moving to stand beside Ronin with awkward smiles for Loren and Sam.

Eventually tasks are assigned, and Amalia watches as other choose their rooms, willing enough to fill whatever need remains. A need which winds up being room four, the girl walking to the door and laying her hand upon the knob, anticipating some new disaster to greet her from the other side.

Of course the gourds showed up to wreak a little havoc in the Atheneum today, and Jigano sighed in exasperation as he, too, tried to compel them to go the hell away. Dratted nuisances. (Fangorn excluded, of course). It was a quiet and efficient group that gathered in spite of the villainous vegetables, and the bard smiled and gave each a murmured word of greeting and grateful nod as they arrived. No apology needed. The gourds delayed things anyways, he reassured Amalia as each went to the room of their choice.

”As you bring books out of your rooms, I’ll work on carrying them down to empty shelves,” he explained his role in the proceedings. ”Once all the shelves and furniture is cleared we can move it down to the area in front of last year's wall repairs and start filling it back in again.” The tables that had been shifted there for the last Flora and Fauna lesson were pushed against the wall, empty and ready to be piled high with books as well.

Room one hadn’t been opened in a while, and the first thing that would greet Loren as he entered was a thick cloud of dust. In fact, from the depth of the grime it would seem that the place hadn’t been touched in decades, if not longer. There might have been one window on the far wall but the light that filtered through it was wan and dark, obscured by thick mats of dirt and cobwebs and a pile of dead ladybugs an inch thick upon the sill. Loren will find two large bookshelves and one table hidden beneath the mess, all showing slight signs of age and decay but appearing more or less sound. The books are in a mixed state; those near the window appear to have succumbed to dry rot and age, but those nearest the door might be legible and salvageable, though they will take a lot of cleaning to be readable again.

Room two was in slightly better shape, with two small windows instead of one larger one. They let in more light and appeared as though they might even still open with a sturdy push. Though dirty, there were footprints in the dust that showed that someone had come in and the room had seen some use perhaps as recently as five years ago. Rance will see a book still sits on one of the two tables, a marker between its closed pages showing where someone had intended to return. The title on the spine is “The Book of Seasons,” and along with other texts in the room it seems to be focused on harvesting and planting in the Hollowed Grounds, along with weather patterns and the cycle of the moon and stars within the barrier. A single bookshelf rests against one wall, but the other contains a pigeon-hole construction filled with rolled parchments. Most are dust, but a few remain, and the books on the opposite shelves are in decent condition for their age.

Room three had seen better days, and so had its occupants. As Quanil pushed the door open a scurrying towards the shadowed corners indicated the presence of some many-legged vermin, an unsettling infestation given the lack of other light. No window breaks the back wall in this room, but ornate oil lanterns are set into three of the walls, long since dry of fuel. Three small bookshelves share the space, though there are remarkably few books on their shelves. Stranger still, each book is bound in dark leather and locked shut, each with an ornate silver lock showing signs of ancient tarnishing. A single table and high-backed chair sit dead center of the space, and something gleams faintly through the dust on the floor around it.

Room four was a little smaller than the previous rooms but made up for it with a larger window that was still in good condition, the frame sound and the glass a bit dusty but otherwise clear. Amalia can see that it’s a surprisingly bright and cheerful space with a domed ceiling that makes the edges of the room a bit dangerous for taller folk, but it is painted a dark blue, with constellations picked out in faded white and silver paint, still faintly visible beneath the light coating of grime. A single shelf is pushed against one wall, containing only a handful of books written in a strangely looping script, while on the floor against the other wall the disintegrated remains of a straw pallet rests. It is the middle of the room, however, that holds the strangest thing: a five foot tall orrery, its delicate but heavy metal arms long-since rusted into immobility, crowned with a golden sun and surrounded by four planets of varying sizes, each with its own collection of alien moons and satellites.

Room five greeted Samuel with an unfortunate smell as the breeze of the door would waft the scent of decay and a decided fungal overtone to his nose. The books in this room have long since turned to mold and mildew for the room’s window, mirror to room one, is broken with edges still sharp and gaping after so many years. Rain and snow have clearly had their way, and both bird and mouse droppings can be seen amid the shambles of the rotting shelves. Five chairs are scattered and overturned between two tables and two large bookshelves – or what used to be bookshelves. One of the tables is broken, and the other shoved up against a shelf which had spilled its precious contents to the floor some decade past. Beneath the dried leaves and general buildup of nature’s detritus lie two suspicious dark stains upon the stone floor.

Room six was the largest, but also the one in the best shape. Ronin would see the breeze from the door ruffle the feathers of a mummified bird towards the back of the room, but aside from a light layer of dust and disuse the space was in remarkably good condition. Three windows lit the space during the day and revealed the six bookshelves within, all sturdy and whole. The shelves weren’t packed tightly, but there were a number of books on each, thinner ones to the east of the room and thicker ones to the west. Flipping them open might crumble a few pages of the slimmest volumes, but would reveal what appeared to be a record of births, marriages, genealogies, and deaths. Whether they were from within the barrier or some other place wasn’t clear, but many contained small portraits in faded ink.

Quanil danced around any gourds that came their way and grabbed a broom to try to shoo them away. They hadn't seen the point in bringing their staff with them to a cleaning, but maybe the broom would be better anyway.

In the end, they gave up and let others who were more skilled at it handle the gourds. They smiled and nodded at Mr. Loren when he arrived, and then opened the door for their chosen room. They made a thoughtful noise at the sound of scurrying and wondered idly about maybe sending some gourds in here to fight it out with... whatever it was that had set up house here. They leaned the broom against the wall by the door and looked around. The lamps caught their attention: further light might send the pests skittering away. They went to the nearest lamp and rattled it a little in its place; hearing no sloshing of fuel, they sighed. So much for that plan.

They took stock of the room in what light there was. The locks were interesting, promising knowledge that someone, at some point, considered precious. But the fact that some part of the floor is gleaming drew their attention because it seemed immediately accessible... and also shiny.

Quanil moved the table and chair aside and retrieved the broom to sweep away the dust on the floor, hoping to reveal the source of the shininess.

Ah, this didn't look so bad at all, really. Approaching the bookshelves, Ronin perused a few of them, but given that reading wasn't so much his forte, he left them largely alone - other than shifting them about, of course. He got to work dusting off the books and the shelves, before stacking the volumes and marching them out of the room. Jigano would find them in neat piles outside the door.

While he worked, Ronin's projection opened up the windows to let light and air in, and grabbed a rag and a bucket of soapy water so he could clean them.

Ronin dusts the books and shelves, and stacks books outside the door for Jigano.

His projection opens up the windows and cleans them with soapy water.

As Loren opened the door, he found himself coughing from the sudden wave of dust. Waving a hand in front of his face, he took in the state of the room he'd chosen. It was hard to make out much of anything, and he sighed.

Then he walked further into the room, rolling us his sleeves as he did. The skin of his arms grew feathers, and he used them as makeshift feather dusters, sweeping up the mess as best he could. When he reached the closest bookshelf, he carefully tried to lift the fragile looking volumes. Assuming he was successful, he would carry them outside.

Loren turns his arms into makeshift feather dusters using a partial goose shift. He also tries to carry the less damaged books to Jigano.

Sam wrinkled his nose as the door was opened; he had been able to smell to his full capacity for a while now, but after years of having dull senses particularly strong odours still caught him off-guard. With a rather put out expression and careful steps he headed inside to see what was around; immediately he could see what books had been in this room were not going to be savable, the pages clung together with damp and mould crawling over the covers.

Well, the first job was to see what he was working with. Sam went to work picking up the chairs and placing them outside the door, just trying to get them out of the way for now, and pushing the intact table to one side; he then took a broom and swept at the leaves, trying to get them closer to the door for taking out but also to see what the stains beneath were; he dreaded to think.

Sam moves out the chairs, pushes aside the table and starts sweeping to look at the stains.

Rance wrinkled his nose at the amount of dust in the room, rolling up his sleeves as he took stock. “Did the former residents just up and run?” He muttered under his breath. He skimmed the titles as he made a circuit of the room, leaving the scrolls alone for the moment. While he had no interest in farming in a general sense, his desire for information almost had him picking up the book on the table and opening it out of idle curiosity. If there had been a cleaner spot, he might have done just that.

Instead, he made a face at the mess and went to the windows, shoving at their age-stuck frames. Once they were open, he’d take the still intact books out to the tables in the hallway, followed by the scrolls though those he carried with noticeable care. He might not care about the information inside of them, but he wasn’t going to damage them needlessly. While in the hall, he also grabs a bucket and rags, reasoning that it would be best to work from the top down.
