DEIMOS
the resurrected sword
Midday swells and surf coaxed and inveigled, as he stood against the backdrop of jungles and fire, of autumn entanglements that hadn’t quite reached the coast. It might’ve been the wild nature of the shoal, of the tides, or just manifestations of too many yesteryears, of childhood ambitions and youthful aspirations binding him along the sands. It might’ve been nothing at all but the call of power, wild and savage, nature unraveling, releasing hidden gems of strength, tenacity, and potential, snagging and clawing at the rest of the untamed world.

Maybe he just wanted to remember.

He’d long since relinquished his shoes on the shore, pressing bare feet into the sands, wrapping long locks into a makeshift bun, and sparing a daring glance at Zuriel nearby. She snorted him away, a visible eyeroll determining she was not a being of the ocean – too much forest, greenery, earth in her bones – and that he could have his waves without her meandering amongst them.

He did exactly that, wandering out amidst work clothes, indifferent to their status or stature. It wasn’t the Moonlit Tides, and the beast had checked those nostalgic aspects out the forefront, reigning in layers of disappointment as he’d done in Halo, staring at the mountains that weren’t his own. The ocean before him would never be the one he was born beside, presided over as a rampant, gangly youth, but the zeal, the fervency, the power in each undulation and ripple were the same assignations.

The Sword took a breath, and then dove, carefree for once, shoulders not bearing the brunt, keen weight of other responsibilities and duties, streamlined along the running, rampant push and pull of the waves. Arms propelled forward, and followed the same pristine movements of ages before, when each child was taught to swim amongst those vehement curls and coils. Movement below his form caught his eye, and he only recalled seeing the creatures before as ghosts – flattened bodies, leaf-like tails, the bright crystal adorning their foreheads. Curiosity and daring beckoned, and he altered his path to trail after theirs for a time, before rising to the surface to take in air.

His first trip to the Kuali'i Isles had been interesting, to say the least. His second had been more fascinating as he'd ridden the winds high above them, watching the slow, stately drift of the islands over the course of a few hours as they merged and broke apart and migrated across the blue waters below.

Isuma had napped in the hollow between his shoulder blades and wing joints, content to keep him company in his study of the new region until the midday sun had grown warm enough even in Leafchange to turn them back towards the shore. It was chance that brought them winging over a stretch of coast with a familiar horned-and-hooved shape below, and the gryphlet had peeped excitedly as she dove over the side of the dragon's shoulder to flutter around Zuriel with happy greetings for the stately unicorn.

Where the companion was, the human wouldn't be far behind. Jigano cast about until he saw a dark-bunned head break the surface, and then he dipped his wings to skim over the waves, his shadow racing ahead of him as he crooned a greeting.
Unless otherwise noted, Jigano always wears a pair of black and silver bracers with a star design inset on each (Eclipse Bracers), and carries the lantern SoulKeeper at his belt.

DEIMOS
the resurrected sword
Zuriel, for her part in the quiet adventure, pulled and tugs on some weeds within the jungle’s lair, just along the opening where it parted from branches and boughs, and layered out to sand. While she pickily chose bits and pieces she thought might suit her appetite, recognition of others coming in from the sky caused her to abandon the leaves for the moment – ears pricking, head rising, a light whinny extended towards the incoming gryphon. The dragon, had he of come any closer, would’ve earned pinned ears and a haughty, sour attitude. Isuma was welcome to flutter around her, however, and the unicorn amplified her greetings with a nod, and wave of fronds in her mouth.

Deimos intended to take another breath and continue his explorations beneath the waves, perhaps snag at another manta and follow; no rhyme, no reason, no hovering expectations multiplying along broad, brawny shoulders. The shadow overhead ensured he ceased in that second; the pinpoint of outstretched wings, thankfully familiar, because otherwise he might’ve churned out either apprehension (from those hours spent in ivory, iced caves, and mourning the ones left behind), or rage (splitting something apart in vengeance). Instead, his gaze followed the ambiguous nature of the Sage’s motions, leathery contortions skimming over rippling veneers. Maybe he was just exploring and enjoying too – with the horizon not so bleak for the day. Jigano he implored in greeting, before diving below the surface again, embarking on watery paths.

Gryphons weren't generally vegetarians, and so Zuriel had nothing to fear from Isuma's interruption of her lunch. Instead the gryphlet was happy to perch on a nearby branch, watching the unicorn eat until she had a sense of which leaves and flowers tempted the elegant equine and then seeking out samples from higher branches to offer to the four-footed gourmand.

For his part, Jigano's flight was idle, his greeting one of comrades chance-met in passing. Scale-feathered wings dipped low as he slowed his flight, still unpracticed but growing defter with each day he spent in the silvery body. Deimos, good afternoon, he called back courteously. Fishing? As the General submerged once more the dragon tried to ease himself low enough to peer into the crystal-blue waters.

It didn't quite go as planned as a wingtip caught a wave and suddenly he found himself scrambling to remain aloft. All for naught, in the end, as he tumbled into the water with an undignified splash. Sucking in a deep breath before his head went under filled his large lungs and gave him enough buoyancy to bob right to the surface, however, and he spread his wings instinctively to create more surface area atop the waves as he floated and spluttered the water out of his nose and eyes.

DEIMOS

Zuriel was quite content with offerings of food – placated from any haughty, scornful mood, partaking in those extended, crunching, snorting softly; but not having much to grant in return. Her head tilted vaguely, then maw reached out to snag at the branches, bending them up and down as some assemblage of a game.

Jigano must’ve expected Deimos to be committed to something useful instead of recreational; the latter a rarity, taking moments in time to recall old skills, coasting below the surface, trailing after the scales of fish, the leafed tails of the manta. Indulging in yesteryear foundations, his arms swept him downwards, well-practiced and manifested pulses of movement, streamlined for efficiency, strength, and power, not just in violence, but in other forms of life. Just swimming, he answered in return. He could’ve opened his hands and chased down the animals beneath his motions, snagged, intending to grab, to toss out of the sea, to hoard for later food supplies.

He might’ve; had there not be a turbulent maelstrom thereafter, wings plunging along the surface, erupting and emboldening the veneer to be more than just waves and ripples. Shaking his head and rising back up, breaking over the current, only to snort, treading water a few yards away from the dragon. “All right?” A brow arched at the noises following the rather haphazard landing.

I still haven't tried swimming in these waters yet, the dragon-bard admitted, a hint of embarrassment in his mental tone. They look so much wilder than the Oasis, and Numeria was an inland country... Which meant all his previous experience swimming had been done in lakes or ponds, some of which had seemed plenty deep enough at the time, but compared to the ocean they were mere kiddie pools.

For all his grace in other situations, it seemed that his dragon shape always gave him the most trouble to control. He might not have been intending to swim in the ocean even yet, but his curiosity led him to a sound dunking that gave him no choice in the matter. He was lucky that the surf wasn't too rough in this area, the mild weather and shallow waters soothing some of the sea's more rambunctious tides.

Ahhh... I... think I might live, he admitted sheepishly, all four legs beginning to paddle instinctively, treading the water to stay afloat though the salten sea and his own full lungs did an admirable job keeping his hollow-boned body atop the waves rather than beneath them. I expected to sink, like I would in the Oasis. But I hardly have to work at all to stay up-- A slightly larger swell surprised him, lifting him up and swamping over his wings and bank and he scrambled a bit, dog-paddling with renewed vigor to try and reorient himself into the coming waves rather than broadside to them.

Have you ever swum in an ocean? Before Torchline, I mean? he asked, genuinely curious but also hoping to change the subject away from his rather inelegant impromptu swimming lesson.

DEIMOS
the resurrected sword
Treading water, comfortable in the waves, he listened, gaze catching over the rolling surf, the shades of blue, memories drifting and catching, then pummeling elsewhere, searing and segmenting back to the present. Jigano, from the inland countries, whereas Deimos had been granted the coast, luminary abysses and eternal warfare. The Sword paid no mind to any of the Sage’s fumblings or inexperience; he’d done so more than once in eagle form, when he’d been attempting to get used to it. He followed while the beast talked, diving down several other instances, content to merely pass the time amongst the surface and the sprawl, effortless movements and motions of muscles; hiding the subtle smirk as a larger swell careened towards the dragon’s entity.

Only on the question did he rise again, still some yards away, in case the beast had other trials and tribulations. “I was born beside the ocean,” he offered, the slightest bit of information, the notions Jigano could likely surmise for himself. All of the Tides children were expected to learn how to swim; there were no questions, no rebuttals, no challenges. It was survival and strength; basking amongst the currents and shorelines, racing and chasing after gulls, the taste of sea-salt air in their mouths. To be wild and savage, to be powerful and dominating, to be supreme and skilled, echoes of mastery and command. The mountains had only come after he lost those vibrant pieces of the past.

Facing into the waves, paddling just enough to offset their motion and stay roughly abreast of the General, the dragon finally began to find a little equilibrium. As the salten water supported him, helping him to float almost effortlessly in spite of his size, he began to relax a little more and to experiment. A swipe of his tail to the side almost unbalanced him again, but a flex of it downwards - an uncomfortable and somewhat unnatural motion for it - propelled him with unexpected force forwards through the water. Submerging his wings tended to drag him downwards, but as long as he kept them atop the waves their surface area helped him keep his back and head above water as well.

I wouldn't be surprised if your next shift was something suitably aquatic, given that... now that there's an ocean to swim in. Idle speculation, but there seemed little harm in it given the pleasantness of the day and the unexpected peace of it. Someday soon, he hoped, he could coax Rory into coming here and watching the sunset on the beach. Do you recognize many of the birds and fish here? Are they similar to your world's coastal creatures? Ever-curious about what was unique to Caido and which characteristics seemed to transcend time and space.

DEIMOS
the resurrected sword
Another plunge, hovering, harpooning just below the surface, his eyes caught the dragon’s movement, a tail awkwardly slid amongst the waves; perhaps Jigano was simply trying things out, as they so often did when another unforeseen encounter or attuned nature clambered down upon them. Like enchantments and invocations, springing from their entities, no warning, no omen, no signs of alterations until something else prompted it – making a note to practice the earthen wares embedded and infused in his blood now, not having wielded or operated on it since their memorial making.

Otherwise, his sight turned to the mixture of flickering scales, barbed tails, dashes of quick, maneuvering fish, the occasional, smaller shark chasing after them, promises of reefs, and coves. Curiosity and exploration contorted, curled, along his bones and veins, clarity of thought – but he’d be limited with his lung capacity, for no matter how much he inhaled from above, he’d still need more eventually. Forced to abandon the investigation before it’d ever truly begun, time and time again. Seemingly on this notion, his chest and mind clarified the necessity, and he rose back up, breaking over the veneer amidst Jigano’s speculation. Do you plan on using it as a sea shift? Half-jokingly, amusement in the quirk of a brow, a nod towards the draconic wings and floating carapace. Deimos was always shocked and bewildered when he acquired another animal distinction: bear and tiger; the eagle a flourish dragged by Safrin’s motions. “Some. We had gulls we used to chase. Fish. Sharks. And dolphins, like Amalia’s form.” His eyes narrowed, pondering, then snorting again. “Though ours were not pink.”

I do float better than I expected, the dragon admitted, pleased and amused both at Deimos's joke and the truth of his words. There are sea-dragons, aren't there? Maybe I can blend in with some of them? He tested his wings cautiously, stroking them through the water as if flying through the air. The sea resisted, but he also propelled himself forward a little ways before he had to pause to drag them closed and then extend them once more before he could descend too far into the waves. Actually... this might work better than I thought.

He paddled around again, clumsy compared to Deimos's easy grace in the water, but growing more at ease the longer he managed to avoid drowning. He hadn't quite steeled himself to try diving or ducking his head beneath the surface of the sea, but he listened with fascination to the General's descriptions. I didn't think they were pink either, he agreed with a snort of cool air. But all I could remember was bits and pieces from old travelers's journals and bestiaries, so I wasn't certain. It suits her, though, he added slyly, fair warning in the sparkle of his opal eyes that a dreaded pun was approaching. Why, Jyoti and Isuma were tickled pink themselves when they saw it!

DEIMOS

A shrug of his shoulders followed the Sage’s inquiry; he’d never met any sea dragons. The only winged lizards he’d ever come face-to-face with, before here, before ivory ones freezing friends, had been companions – small, light, lissome, fire-breathing. If there’d been any under the waves, he hadn’t noticed them. Perhaps was the only thing he could release on those subject matters, pondering if there were such creatures amongst the deepening fathoms, alongside whales, squid, or if it were another portion of tales, fables, and myths. Maybe he’d glimpsed upon enough to realize it was completely feasible.

He tread water for a little while, listening, then grew slightly restless again, and lingered just below the surface, glancing at the light refracting from above, descending not so far down below, the darkening depths promising mysteries, enigmatic plunges he couldn’t quite make. He missed the sparkle in the Sage’s eye, but upon rising once more for another breath, caught the slide of the pun – features turning into direct nonchalance, an audible groan roaming from his chest. “Awful,” shaking his head, snorting all the while. “What else supposedly lives here?” They’d seen the L’ma, shades of ghostly, phantom-looking whales near Ludo’s makeshift boat recently, and the Hels cawing near shorelines; but what else? He wasn’t thoroughly tempted to hunt down any other creatures for the time being, their latest, treacherous experience fresh in his mind, but inquiry and interest were always at the forefront too – and he presumed the Lorekeeper would have some sort of information already assembled and stashed away.

There had been dragons aplenty on Jigano's world, all in different colors, similar yet different to Caido's many-hued menagerie. The sea dragons had been stories his mother had told, protectors of an ancestral homeland that the young Lore Oracle had never - and now would never - see. Ah well, he lamented with a sigh of cool air. Since this is Caido, they'd probably just try to eat us anyways. A brief not of pessimism that he determinedly shook off as he explored his ability to move through the water, paddling about like an overgrown dog and trying to find ways to make his wings less unwieldy in the brine.

Alas, Deimos couldn't dive to get away from his puns when they spoke on the Attuned link, and Jigano couldn't quite hide the hint of smugness at the groan issued forth to the sunny sea air. I know, he admitted, sounding not even a little bit sorry. Alas, sometimes you just have to throw a pun out there and see if it sinks or swims. Even if that one had been a sinker for sure.

Maybe if he combined a vertial sweep of his tail with a partial 'flap' of his wings? As he experimented he hummed thoughtfully, a musical warble of sound as Deimos's question was considered and turned over. I met with Ronin about that recently. There are cloud mantas that are flat, graceful beasts. They fly as well as swim, and they have jewels in their foreheads that can let one breathe underwater... unfortunataely, you have to kill them to get it. They're gentle beasts, but at least they're edible. So nothing went to waste. And the pink dolphins, like Amalia. Encantados, I believe they're called. I've seen a few pods from overhead when I've flown out to the Kuali'i Isles to train my fire magic. A place to start, if the General had more questions about either beast, though Jigano didn't know much more detail.

Oh, and the merfolk, he added after a moment's thought back to his conversation with Remi in the storm.

DEIMOS
the resurrected sword
The initial comment earned naught more than a stoic, nonchalant countenance and a shrug to his shoulders while he tread water once more, dragging back loose curls of his hair that’d escaped his haphazard bun. The ivory dragon from the caves hadn’t seem interested in devouring them – just wanting them to leave, with or without their souls, their figures, their lives intact. He made no other response, the inclinations still a little too raw, uncertain when they wouldn’t be any longer. After the next disaster? After some other traumatic thing occurred?

Perhaps the Sage continued the puns just to alleviate the melancholy and anguish threatening to brim back to the surface, and this time Deimos grimaced, a furrow to his brows. “It sunk,” he snorted, one more shake to his head, half-tempted to toss an enchanted spout of water Jigano’s way and seeing if he’d survive, prevail, through the potency.

At least he’d distracted the Lorekeeper with knowledge, sagacity, and wisdom, prepared to hear the torrent of information coming his way. He’d seen the aforementioned mantas, recently too, as they crept along below his feet, but he hadn’t known about their properties, or that they could fly. “Interesting.” Which meant they were likely far more valuable dead than alive, and his gaze flickered back to the rush of rays swimming in the fathoms and depths, pondering the notions to himself. Pink dolphins, Amalia’s latest acquired shift, encantados, pods existing elsewhere. The last though caused an arch to his brow. “Merfolk.” Because of course there were merfolk; stories and legends from other worlds likely to collide here, no longer so foolish as to believe in everything from other lands spiraling here: each with their own brand of terror and treachery. The simple word was the only indication for Jigano to proceed, his gaze already dropping back to the veneer, the sea, and its hazardous melee of secrets.

Deimos was always bluntly honest, a trait that Jigano admired in the general, almost as much as he appreciated the other man's ability to be the 'straight man' for the bard's puns. I suppose I'll wave goodbye to it for now, and try again later. One of these days you'll take the bait and I'll get a laugh out of you! he promised with a sharp-toothed draconic grin as his six-limbed scramble became more sure and he began to move with a little more grace through the water.

Not that it was a very high bar, given how he'd begun.

Luckily Deimos knew how to distract him and the dragon pontificated while he paddled. The other man was as frugal with his words as ever, and only their long association - both good and bad - gave the dragon-bard the clue he needed to hear the invitation to continue on the last word.

Remi made them sound like the Fae, in a way. They mostly keep to themselves and don't welcome intrusion in their lands beneath the waves. I haven't met any yet, though, he admitted, a tad apologetic. I only saw their ghosts at Ludo's game... so I don't know yet if there's more to them to be wary of, or what other abilities they might have. Though they might have some control over water... Maea was struggling with something in the ocean when we were building Remi's memorial pillar, and we never did catch sight of what was making it so difficult for her.
