Amalia
the shield of safrin
Enough is enough.

The gourds are a nuisance every year, but this year? This year they're an outright terror, and it is time for something to be done. Whatever the reason for the violence and aggression, it is far too much - on both sides. The number of broken gourds and bandaged ankles brought into her shop has bordered on astronomical; if Amalia has to break up one more fight between pumpkin and human, she thinks she may scream.

So it is that she arrives at dawn, standing on the edge of the Fields, the natural habitat of the gourds. It's a chill Leafchange morning; the leaves are resplendent in fiery color, leaving a carpet of crimson on the ground. Shield on her back and staff in her hands, Amalia waits barefoot for whomever has decided to join her on this journey to arrive.

This is a PQ to try and make peace with the vampire gourds - or at least prevent more deaths on both sides. It's open to anyone, but please bare in mind Ama will be very cross if you try to cause trouble. There's 2-3 open spots based on interest.

It was the season of menacing pumpkins – and though Melita had certainly been amongst those bombarding, mauling, and desecrating the gourds – she’d altered her course once she’d acquired Fangorn. Once she realized they too had feelings and emotions, that they lived and breathed and came to this world just the same as them. So once she saw Amalia’s notice, the youth jumped at the chance to right some wrongs – blighted Punking not withstanding.

The pair bounded and leapt towards the Outskirts beneath dawn light, and though Melita was her usually armed self, she made no move to bombard with her staff, with her bow, with her arrows. Once they were closer to the Shield, she permitted the slowest of smiles, eager to assist. “Fangorn and I can help?” An offer on the wind, clutching the companion in her arms, watching, waiting.

Alina heard about the silly residents of the Hollowed Ground trying to come to some sort of agreement with the vampire gourds. It had actually made the Fae laugh out loud, a rare occurrence. Imagining this would devolve into a fight relatively quickly, she decided to come watch from a safe distance. Besides, she wanted to see what these people knew of Vi.

So she'd strapped on her quiver and her bow and grabbed her spear. Then she'd taken to the air, flying through and then above the Greatwood. It didn't take her long to stumble upon the sight of the two other women gathering. Hovering a good distance above them, she settled in to watch.

Admittedly, Sam knew that he was not the best person to arrive at this non-violent mission; he'd had quite a track record of zapping the gourds in the last few days. With all the frustrations and tensions of his life at the moment he'd just not had the energy to do anything but eliminate the pests and move on. Still, it had hovered at the back of his mind, the vege-cide praying on his conscience.

So he decided to come and join Amalia in her mission, hoping he could help them find some kind of peace and stop the annoying little gourds biting ankles and causing mayhem. He did not like to do things with force anyway, not usually, so the idea of a non-violent mission appealed. A way to atone for his previous actions towards the little pumpkins, maybe.

Arriving wrapped in a long cape and with his face shadowed by a hood to protect from the rising sun, he approached Amalia and waved, looking across to give Melita a smile. He did not recognise the Fae woman floating around above them and immediately was anxious of what she'd think of him, but it was too late to back away now. "I've come to help. Do you think you'll be able to talk them out of attacking us..?"

Well, this is certainly an odd crew. Amalia smiles warmly at Melita as she and Fangorn appear, mentally greeting the gourd and physically reaching a hand to them both, unsure if pumpkins are fans of skritches.

Then there's a Fae she doesn't know and, surprise of surprises, Sam. Amalia blinks at her brother arrives, for a moment too stunned to reply. "Uh.. that's, um, that's the plan. And keep us from attacking them." She glances up at the Fae again, wondering what part the winged woman will want to play in this.

But they came here for a reason. Amalia turns out toward the field, leading their group a little ways before calling out with both voice and mind. "Vampire gourds! We've been enemies for so long- we come with hope of establishing peace, and preventing loss of life." Jyoti croons her low agreement, ready to unleash calming starlight should the need arise. For now, all they can do is wait.

Oh boy oh boy, do they come.

All around the group they materialize: vampire gourds in every shape and size and species imaginable. Round and oblong, symmetrical and irregular, rolly polly and topsy turvy, they seem to grow from the ground until there is no clear escape except perhaps the sky.

And in the center of them, a giant pumpkin glowers malevolently at the group. A far cry from the glorious size of the punqueen, the gourd could still easily make off with two to three children, or perhaps one adult. Seconds tick by, and there is absolute silence-

-And then, from the assembled gourds, a rumble that resonates in the bones of all who listen, the words clear only to Fangorn and Amalia, but the gist of it obvious enough to all:

See you come now for a truce
After spilling blood and juice
Killers of mother and queen,
Now for safety are you keen?

Tell us why we should withdraw
From our fight of fang and claw
Hurry up, don't drag your feet,
You look good enough to eat...

Oh no, you're surrounded! Better make your plea to the pumpkins as to why we should have peace. You may assume Amalia translated. Bonus points for style.

No posting order.

As the pumpkins practically materialized and surrounded those on the ground, Alina couldn’t help but smirk. Apparently, the lady in charge's plea fell on deaf ears (assuming the gourds actually had ears). And the response they received back from the squash was downright ominous.

Still, seeing as the Fae was hovering a safe distance above, she wasn't too worried. Indeed, she found herself calling out to all assembled below, both vegetable and human. As she spoke, she gestured with the butt of her spear, indicating the three people below her. It was clear she did not care what happened one way or another here.

"Your quarrel is clearly with those below, not with me.
Do as you see fit, to stop another killing spree."

Alina tells the gourds to do what they want, just leave her out of it. And she does it in couplet form.

Fangorn did accept scratches, leaning into Amalia’s gentle ministrations with a welcoming grumble and hiss. Melita listened, addressing Samuel with a nod, pondering over his appearance here too, but welcoming and genuine just the same, her smile peeking through the cluster of apprehension nestling within.

Since the plan was to try, she allowed Fangorn down upon the ground while Amalia seemed to summon them. Her last bout had been with the Punking, full of blight, and otherwise she had made a point not to harm any of the gourds, since her companion was one, and it felt wrong, somehow.

Then they came – some larger, some malevolent, some materializing with the familiar rumbling. Fangorn inched towards them, sibilances carrying through the haze as if he were conversing, attempting to make some sort of peace between the group. Melita missed the Fae’s insinuations from nearby (perhaps best, when they were supposed to be remaining calm), and instead, kneeled, closer down to the ground, staff in hand.

Her own vampire gourd began translating their nuances, Amalia following suit, and a subtle sigh swept through her.

Because she had been part of killing that said queen and mother.

Her jaw clenched, knuckles white across the wooden portions of her weapon. “Leave us alone, we want the same,” she whispered. “Aren’t you tired of this game?”

When the gourds began to appear in such a number Sam did feel a little uneasy, but tried to reassure himself; he had his barrier if things really turned sour and well, Amalia couldn't be mad at him forever.

The horrible rumble then provided translation did little to calm his nerves; he stayed quiet to hear what everyone else had to say. It seemed responding in rhyme was the thing to do...something he was not confident about his ability in, but he wouldn't be the one to break the trend and endanger anyone.

"Um..it was your mother that hit first;
so don't paint us as villains in your verse.
She came to hurt us, we hurt her,
It was defence, not a murder."

Amalia
the shield of safrin
They are quickly enough surrounded, the gourds asserting their dominance over the land better than any human might hope to. Pushing back her rising anxiety, Amalia glances between her companions before turning her attention to the de-facto leader, translating the missive aloud.

The fae replies with exactly the amount of interest in the proceedings Amalia expected, causing the girl's ears to flick back in ire. Why even come, if only to watch and judge?

Not that Sam or Melita are much more effective. Each of them replies in verse, but to Amalia it seems they are shifting the blame, deflecting rather than truly parlaying. Gritting her teeth, the Shield opens her arms non-threateningly, trying to keep her mental and physical voices calm.

"Vi is father to us all,
"No matter how big or small.
"Let us in His name find peace,
"And from this conflict, release.

"Please accept our open plea:
"Let each other live and be.
"Tell us what we need to do
To make our wrongs right by you."

Holding her breath and bathed in Jyoti's starlight, the Shield steps back, waiting for the gourds to pass their judgment.

Well, how did you expect it to go?

All around the group a grumbling starts to arise. Grunts and shivers and snarls and gnashing teeth, escalating into something close to laughter - the gourds are clearly amused. Bearing its teeth in a wicked smile that opens to only vast emptiness, the leader rumbles out again.

Oh sweet two-legs and your treaties,
How you entertain!
Now for peace you are so keen
After striking down our queen
Thinking that your hands are clean -
You can think again.

And as the last verse lands the gourds attack, hungry for vengeance and blood.

Being airborne and aloof does little to save Alina. Two hard-shell gourds begin their onslaught, lashing out with vines to snag the Fae's slender arms and legs and drag her back towards the earth.

Melita and Fangorn will find themselves surrounded by a gang of 10 small, toothy buttercup gourds. Though dwarfed by their (TRAITOR) cousin, the gourdlings are spry and aggressive, with six nipping at Melita's heels and calves while four tangle Fangorn in their vines.

Samuel. Oh, Sam. Not only did you fight the punqueen, but you've made it your mission to assault the gourds whenever possible, and the pumpkins remember. Three Atlantic Giant Pumpkins hurl themselves at you with a shocking amount of dexterity; one lands on your chest, one cracks your right ankle, and one wraps vines around your neck, sending you thumping to the ground.

Whether because of her good intentions or her soothing starlight, Amalia is largely spared. The leader gourd slaps at her with its vines but does little more than menace; instead is glares into her eyes, rumbling a message for her and Fangorn.

You came with claims of making peace;
My children hunger for a feast.
Never with two-legs will we parlay,
So, little children, run away.

Uh oh! The gourds are not impressed with the attempts to make peace!
Alina is being dragged down by three gourds! She has taken a large amount of damage.
Melita is being attacked by a gaggle of tiny gourds! She has taken a medium amount of damage
Samuel has been attacked by three giant gourds! His ankle is broken, a gourd is on his chest, and another one has him by the neck. He has taken a huge amount of damage and is immobilized!
Amalia has been slapped by the leader of the gourds! She has taken a small amount of damage.

What will you do?

Alina snarled as the gourds attacked her, of all people. The pain was excruciating, but she was well trained. Though her arms were captured by the vines, she did her best to try and maneuver her spear to cut one or both of the vines dragging her down.

At the same time, something awakened within her. Power of the sort she'd never experienced before burst out. As it did, tiny illusory flames began to dance on the vines as well, creeping slightly down towards the gourds. Although she wasn't sure how she was doing it, she kept trying to focus as best she could on maintaining it, though she could feel the magic draining rapidly.

Alina tries to use her spear to cut the vines. She also uses her glamour magic to try and make illusory fire.

All right, that could’ve gone better.

Fangorn’s approach and Melita’s were par for the same, ineffectual at best, streamlined for failure almost immediately. The girl reached for her gourd, but he’d already been ensconced in the vines, fangs biting down on his family’s entrapment.

There were several approaches the honeybee child was prone to conducting – bombarding, blasting apart with flames, erupting the whole orchestration into something resembling an inferno. But Amalia had wanted them to try, and even though it wasn’t going great, she’d strive until their leader said otherwise.

It still grated at her though, as she and her companion were surrounded by tiny gourds, pain swindling at her ankles as they nipped. She gripped her staff, and in minute, small movements (not the wake of her strength, the platitude of her capabilities), she attempted to knock them aside and away. Maybe the staff’s hallucinatory properties would assist, keep them at bay for a moment.

--

Fangorn attempts to bite his way out of the vines, and Melita tries to use her staff gently on the gourds, hoping the hallucination properties will confuse/keep them at bay.

"Wait-!" Amalia tries to say, but it's too little too late. The gourds are already mobilizing, and combat is inevitable. All she can hope to do is mitigate the loss of life as much as possible.

Beginning with Sam.

She sees the massive pumpkins hurling at her brother out of the corner of her eye, reacting too slowly to prevent the contact. "Sam!" Amalia cries, lunging forward and shifting to leopard form as she does. Her goal is to push the gourd from Sam's chest with her shoulder while simultaneously biting at the vines that hold his neck.

Mentally she calls any who can hear her (so Fangorn and the pumpkins): Stop this! We're trying to prevent loss of life on both sides - let us lead, before anything worse happens! Jyoti adds a pulse of starlight, trying to deescalate the situation before things get further out of hand.
