Arcane Academy
The first training had been...lackluster. The students hadn't really invested themselves, seeing only their anger at the difficulty of the training rather than the point of the lesson. She hoped this batch of students would be more...willing to engage. To be fair, she did tone down the danger level ever so slightly...but only ever so slightly.

As the students arrived to the rooftop training deck, they would see three training dummies behind Zariah lined up in a row. Their purpose? They'd have to wait and see.

I want your midnights
Evie honestly isn't sure what to expect when the next training is announced. She'd missed the first, and considering the disgruntled reactions she's almost grateful that she had. This time however there is no ignoring or avoiding it, not that she wants to. How else is she to grow stronger, to accept herself as she is without throwing herself into the thick of it?

Not sure what to expect, she arrives in flexible clothing, not having to layer with the magical acclimation to the weather she'd been gifted. Her hair is tied back into a bun, and she'd had to resist bringing any of her physical weapons despite how it made her hips feel bare and her back feel unprotected even in the Palace. The intention was to use her magic after all, though she undoubtedly finds her powers to be weak and pitiful in most ways. She is the first to arrive it seems, and she gives a nod of acknowledgement to Zariah as she loosens up a little, awaiting more students.

MORGAN
Morgan, still far from approving of Zariah or her style of leading, had grumbled over coming to the training session. It irritated her, to think there could be something to learn from someone so rash, someone so willing to toss away a plan in favour of immediate action.

With that said, it could not be denied that in their duel, Zariah had had the superior magical ability. Morgan had masterful control over water, could use the snow in the mountains to complete many of her whims, but admittedly had not developed many more of her magic skills past this - she had loosely practice some telekinesis, but it was hardly developed. It was this knowledge that dragged her to the Academy on training day, even if every step closer made her grit her teeth more.

Seeing Evie as she walked in and not recognising her, Morgan stood next to her and looked to Zariah, giving her a curt nod.

Only two? What a shame. Fortunately this training would work without a full class, honing in more on each individual.

"For this training, we will be focusing on your weakest magics and using them to survive in a real battle scenario. The tummies behind me are set up to attack at random. I highly suggest you do everything in your power to make sure you do not get hit - it will be a shock you won't soon forget." Zariah warned, lifting a hand to signal on her assistants standing on the viewing platform above.

On cue, a blizzard began within the training area, obscuring their view of everything. "Enemies will not always be easy to see, so you must hone your senses to ascertain their location when you lack the power to make up for physical impairments. You may only use your weakest magic. Any use of other magics or other weapons will result in your failure of this course. You may not assist your fellow classmate in any way - doing so will also result in immediate failure. If you are hit three times, you will fail as well."

The illusioned wind whipped her wild curls about her head, Zariah just barely able to make out her students through the fake storm. Slowly she turned and walked out, climbing the stairs to the viewing platform. Begin!" she shouted. And on her command the dummies shot forward, aimed at Evie and Morgan

Ground Rules:
  • You may only use your weakest magic (listed below)
  • You may not use weapons or non magical attacks of any kind
  • You may not help your classmate
  • You may only be hit by the dummies 3 times. 3 times and you're out!
NOTE: If you do not adhere to the ground rules, you will not be able to claim this training to upgrade your magic.

Evie is allowed to use EARTH MANIPULATION

Morgan is allowed to use TELEKINESIS

Evie should have expected this kind of ridiculous nonsense from someone like Zariah, but she can't help the way her characteristic anger rises within her breast as everything is set into motion. "I can move a literal rock and you expect me to be a sufficient fighter? That's not training, it's mockery." She growls, stretching the very limits of her pitiful magic as their vision is suddenly and totally obscured. The roof doesn't have much debris underfoot, but Evie stoops down to clutch what she can, arming herself with dirt, dust, and pebbles alike. Gods, she can't even kick or punch, this is just Zariah lording herself over them. And yet again, Amalia was right to disapprove. That's a sore spot. This certainly isn't what Evie would call training, but they're already in the thick of it, and Evie is not the type to back down from a challenge.

But there's no time for regret now, there's only movement and defenses to be raised. Knowing Morgan had been on one side she tries to back up towards the other woman to perhaps align their backs if nothing else so that they don't hit one another. And as what she thinks is a dummy comes at her, she uses her magic to throw the rocks in her hands as hard as she can, hoping to make some sort of impact of any use.

MORGAN
Morgan stood with her hands behind her back watching Zariah speak with an unreadable expression, though inside she felt much the same frustration that Evie voiced. It seemed ridiculous to expect them to go against such a complex and difficult trial with only their weakest powers - but she wasn't one to complain at a challenge.

Focusing, she moved the snowflakes around her face to be a couple of feet away so she had slightly better visibility with her Telekinesis. While she could just have used her water manipulation for this she did not want to cheat. If she failed at this it would be because of Zariah's obscenely high expectations, not a disqualification. Marching forward, either because she didn't notice Evie's back close to hers or didn't want to work with her, she peered into the white to see one of the dummies.

Trying to be smart rather than confrontational, she took the snow around her with her mind and knelt so she could build it up into a couple of inch high block on the ground, stacking the flakes atop each other in quick succession with telekinetic wall building, hoping that the non-sentient dummy would come forward towards her and trip.

Whether Zariah heard Evie or not, she did not respond. And really, they had bigger things to deal with besides their teacher who watched over them from above.

Evie would find that despite only being able to throw rocks, her aim was shockingly good in the fake blizzard. One, Two, Three! The rocks socked the dummy in the abdomen area, bringing it to a shuddering halt.

Morgan was equally lucky. Though moving the snowflakes would prove pointless - there were far too many falling far to quickly to alleviate the whiteout conditions - her little pile of snow tactic worked well. The dummy ran into it, snow jamming up gears momentarily. Then it too came to a halt.

Simultaneously, both dummies moved back, completely obscured by the snow. The clinking of gears would be the only indication that they were resetting, and were repositioning. 1, 2, 3 clicks. Then the dummies charged again.

Evie's attack was a SUCCESS.

MORGAN
Morgan swiftly gave up with trying to keep the snow from her face, opting just to try her best to concentrate instead. She'd survived winters up in the mountains after all, where sometimes it snowed so thick that you couldn't see your hand before your face.

Hearing the dummy crash into her snow-wall she smiled, glad the plan had worked when she'd thought it up so quickly. Clearly, she wasn't going to be able to use great shows of force for this; she had to be smarter. In the moment the dummy was staggering back and resetting she tried to think of how she could damage it without a brute power.

It was a gamble, but she took a knife from her boot and cut off a hank of her hair from the back, hoping it wouldn't be too obvious when her hood was covering it - then using her telekinesis, she got close enough to the dummy and tried to feed the hair in through cracks, up through the sliding pole, anywhere she could, to jam up the mechanisms that made the thing run.

--
Morgan cuts off some of her hair and tries to get it jammed in the dummies mechanisms!

She doesn't turn because she believes the dummy to still be right before her, since it fell backwards from the wall she built.

Well. Color her surprised. Evie certainly hadn't expected that to be very effective, but she's not going to look a gift horse in the mouth either. The dummies retreat back out of sight, the clicking and whirring a strange, ominous noise that makes her shudder as she tries to anticipate their next attack. The remaining handful she clutches is mostly thicker granules of dirt, but she doesn't want to waste time grabbing more. She'll simply have to try and be creative.

As they're rushed once again she spins to try and pinpoint the location in the blinding snow, this time aiming the debris at the open spots between the joints to grind any mechanical aspects to a halt. And if that doesn't work, she reaches for the minimal amounts of earth beneath its feet, hoping to off balance it.

Evie turns 45 degrees clockwise! She tries to cast dirt into the gears and pull on what's beneath its feet to make it fall.

It seemed the illusioned blizzard was really doing the trick. Even though both Evie and Morgan could hear the mechanisms winding, and the very distinct one, two, and three clicks as the dummy reset, neither managed to recalibrat themselves enough to hit their respective dummies.

The dummies would run into both students, giving a small static shock type zap on contact. Then they disappeared into the snow again.

If only there was a clue as to where they were going.

Four, five, six - the dummies click into place before charging again.

Evie's attack was a FAILURE because she did not locate the dummy.
Morgan's attack was a FAILURE because she did not locate the dummy.

MORGAN
Morgan knew her attack had not succeeded when she felt the hair float away uselessly in the wind; she growled, annoyed that what she'd thought was a clever idea had not worked. Flinching as she was hit by a dummy that delivered an electric shock she turned and tried to shove it back with her telekinesis, but it was already resetting and backing off into the snow.

Trying to follow where the dummies were with her ears she turned until she felt she was facing one then decided to try her trick again, grabbing what hair she could still find out of the air and trying to push it into the dummies, hoping to grind on the gears and stop them. Given that her telekinesis was not strong enough to move the dummies themselves, it felt like the only thing she could do.

Morgan turns 30 degrees clockwise then attempts to reuse her hair from the last round to do the same thing!

The shock is punishment enough for her failure, but Evie can't help the strangled growl of frustration that follows. The clicks are the only audible tell she has, and she can't discern if it's the normal resetting of gears or some sort of code or whatever the hell else that she can't parse.

All she can do is stoop for more material, unashamed to try the same trick again with a different (hopefully more precise) angle. Turning in an approximated guess of where the dummy is, she casts out the dirt and rocks once more in hopes of tangling up those infernal gears.

Evie turns 180 degrees from initial start (if we're going of a clock) and repeats her last attack.

Once again Morgan fell victim to the recalibration of the dummies - having first missed the one, two, three, clicks and then the four, five six clicks. Despite her efforts, the dummy once again ran into her, giving a small static shock before retreating away. One more failure and she would be eliminated.

Evie on the other hand, seem to have caught on to the pattern. Her attack strikes true, the dummy sputtering to a brief halt as earth and rocks hit it. However, despite two successful attacks, it seemed the dummy wasn't done yet, retreating back into the cover of the blizzard.

Seven, eight, nine - the dummies click into place before attacking again.

MORGAN
This puzzle was becoming endlessly frustrating. Morgan had been in several real life conflicts and had never found her enemies this hard to locate, to strike - the issue had been how she laid the blow, not where to lay it. Crying out in irritation as she heard Evie get a hit she tried to think, turned exactly around to where she thought she heard the dummy.

Holding out a hand she tried to reach with her telekinesis within the dummy that was before her without touching it, find a gear or cog that made it run - and hold it still. Find some small yet critical part of the dummy that she could bring the whole thing down with. If she was going to fail again, it wouldn't be from a lack of ingenuity.

Morgan turns  clockwise 180 degrees from where she was already then attempts to freeze a gear inside the dummy with her telekinesis to stop it working!
