She hadn't wanted to have magic, but she did. She was going to have to learn how to control it, how to use it. And she wanted to be able to show her fellow Grounders - yes, especially her parents - that it wasn't anything to fear or hate.

Most especially, she wanted to show herself that. She was still angry about the simple life she'd had being stolen from her by this... ability she'd never asked for or wanted. But her older sibling was correct when they said she'd've died if she hadn't had it.

Anyway, she'd told Jigano she'd seek out General Deimos, and after all he'd done for her and for Quanil, she felt she should keep her word to him. It felt a little presumptuous of her: she was no one special, and he was the MILITIA GENERAL OF THE HOLLOWED GROUND. But you never knew until you asked, right? Worst he'll say is 'no.' And then she'd have to figure out something else, some other way to... Well, she'd cross that bridge when she came to it.

She entered the military barracks as if she had every right to be here and asked the first person she saw if they could direct her to General Deimos. "Jigano Silversmith said he might be able to help me with my magic."

((Your call where he's at, of course. And since you're THE GENERAL, I'll leave the reply Freina gets up to you.))

remember that you can't save everyone
remember that you have to try
He’d been amidst the training grounds already, rendering life back into recently demolished, damaged targets, stuffing straw, grass, and whatever else would keep them upright. There’d been no need to keep them polished and pristine, not when they took massive hits and desecration on a daily basis. One after the other were granted and given the feral accords, before he placed them back, ready to be slaughtered and unhinged once more.

The Sword began to maneuver back into the barracks themselves, pondering on adjusting a few training schedules and want to offer others, when a stranger’s voice rang out, granting Jigano’s name as some sort of clearance, requesting assistance with their magic. He turned the corner to stare them down – a youth completely unfamiliar to him standing there, seemingly waiting for the inevitable. “Back here,” and he motioned with his head in the direction of the grounds again, presuming she would follow out into the earthly, spread out domain. Only when they reached the clearing did he turn to regard her once more; another Abandoned, and the rest entirely unknown. “What can I help you with?”

She turned to the voice and stared. She'd only ever seen him from afar, a face in the crowd - well, a face towering above the crowd, and certainly above her - so while she recognized him, he was almost unknown to her through the veneer of surreality. But she followed him, swallowing down her awe and summoning up her courage.

That didn't mean she'd speak until she was spoken to again.

When he asked his question, she cleared her throat and said, "My name is Freina, sir. I'm... I've newly come into my magic, and Mr. Silversmith had suggested I seek you out for training." She thought about acknowledging that she was nobody, that what she was asking teetered on the verge of ridiculousness, but NO. No, I will not. Jigano told me to ask him and I'm doing that, dammit. I'm as good as anyone else here. She made sure she was standing up straight and raised her chin a little, so she wouldn't look like she was cowering or afraid.

Deimos, unware of any insecurities, notions of inexperience, or matters going on through her mind, merely watched, waited, a tilt of his head in quiet scrutiny. Newly come into magic was always an intriguing step in too many directions – sometimes overwhelming, sometimes menacing, sometimes merely enigmatic. If she’d only just discovered her enchantments, the chance that it was unwieldly at best was a considerable challenge – but they’d all started there, at some point. He’d been a boy when the life draining tenacity pulsed through his hands, through his frame, through his figure, utterly confusing and demanding.

He gave her a nod, and moved further into the grounds themselves, eyes going towards targets, but uncertain with what she’d require for training if he wasn’t aware of the kind of invocations she had. The Sword’s head swiveled back, the piercing juncture of his gaze narrowing, deep in methodical, meticulous conjectures. “What do you have?”

Freina looked around for a way to properly demonstrate. When she saw straw on the ground, she walked over to get in range and concentrated.

The straw started to lift up into the air and then spread in all directions, blown away by her air manipulation. She straightened up and turned back to face the general.

"When I try to do it, that's all the control I have of it. It's a little more stable when I'm in peril of some sort, but not by much, and it's not very strong, as you can see."

A man composed of infernal reaches of patience, he merely watched and waited, a careful reticence and nonchalance contorted over his features. When she came to the straw, previously used to stuff the targets and dummies, it lifted, spread, unfurled, and he anticipated something else – an unwinding, rapid dominion, bestial blades conforming from the wind.

But nothing else.

His eyes roamed back to her, and the answer to his first inclination were already in her words. Basic, air manipulation, a starting point in fixtures and domination. The beast nodded, understanding, because there were columns of earth embedded in his veins that he didn’t know what to do with either. “We can practice your command over it.” Sometimes the more they honed, the more precise it could become – advancing it along a little further, pulling at those strands and seams.

The Sword moved back a ways, and without lifting his palms (for he’d been adhering to notions of using his mind only too), extended miniscule shards of ice. “Try to blow these away.” Then he fired them towards her, no peril, no treachery, but mere preparation, an extension of skills.

She was overjoyed at the general's agreement - though she didn't do more than smile politely and nod. Quanil was bad at hiding their emotions; she was not. She'd learned a long time ago that showing your interest made merchants increase their prices. She didn't make that mistake anymore.

She stood ready as he backed away, preparing herself to cast again. And then... of all things... it was ice...

...and she could feel it closing in on her as she ran, almost as if it were calling out to her in warning of its arrival, was that Ludo's voice or her own imagination, was the hand of death on her shoulder? She had to do something or she was dead, she knew it, knew it as certain as she knew her heart thudding in her chest and the air harsh in her throat as she fled the chaos. She whipped around, not knowing what she was going to do, and the only thought in her was NO as...

...she flung her hands out and air shot from each palm, knocking away any ice shard that came within range of it. Just two simple columns of air, short-lived and small-powered, but enough...

...to keep the shard from hitting her heart and she felt pain blossom in her shoulder, searing hot and then cold, so cold...

...and she was standing there, breathing hard, eyes wide and blinking rapidly so they wouldn't go dry, and reality was starting to melt in around her again. Her shoulder was fine, she was fine, this wasn't the festival, this was Leafchange, not Flowerbirth. She shivered and swallowed and tried to pull herself back together.

remember that you can't save everyone

Deimos had been at Fiat Lux, had prepared for its wake, a favored festival amongst and amidst his memories. The conflagration of its disastrous run didn’t haunt him so much as what came thereafter – the Temple falling, crushing Amalia’s spine – and so when the ice (another familiarity, another piece of the past, tied to him as much as the ocean was) hastened from his palms, he thought nothing of it. But he watched for this unknown girl’s reactions, an arch of his brow entangled along otherwise nonchalant features – studying, scrutinizing, listening as she seemed to chisel her way into harsher breaths.

The ice cascaded, drawn away into harmless flakes of snow, falling into nothingness.

He wouldn’t ask. It wasn’t his place. The beast could hazard a multitude of guesses and estimations, but someone else’s trauma wasn’t his to pry within.

Instead, he followed through on replacing the chiseled ice with flaming cinders, allowing the embers to rise, float, segment before him much like the previous incantations. “Again.” Then on a slow reel, the fire arced forward, heading for Freina once more.

The general was a relentless trainer, it seemed, and... honestly, even as part of her said, Wait!, the rest of her was kind of glad that he hadn't paused the training or, worse yet, stopped it entirely. He wasn't treating her like a damaged thing. He was treating her like an Aba-... like someone with magic who needed to be trained.

She brought her hands up again - somehow the gesture made it feel better to her, like something she was more in control of (and it felt like it took less concentration to pull off, even though she was sure that was her own imagination), and tried to direct puffs of air instead of columns, to choose which direction to redirect each mini torrent of flame.

She was breathing a little harder when she finished, but at least it was from the effort of spell-casting and not the result of slogging through the mud - and ice - of her memories.

remember that you can't save everyone

If anyone detested his training methods or instruction, they’d never said anything. Patient and composed, capable of extending wisdom and sagacity in the particulars of magic, of swordsmanship, of general melee and violence, he’d always attempted to guide them by means of experience. To let them think. To let them wonder. To let them try. He wouldn’t force-feed them nuances of information. He wouldn’t tell them anything more than necessary. He wouldn’t heighten their egos. What the beast did permit and coincide with was a growing of confidence, of strength, of determination – no time to wonder if they faltered, if they were dismayed. They learned to correct the problem, to adjust, to try and attempt, instead of miring themselves into the ground.

Because it would be the latter that got someone killed. No time to second-guess. No wondering, hoping, wishing, and praying.

He watched as she billowed the flames – redirected, flying without similar whims. “Can you try a certain direction?” How much control was truly embodied? Or was it simply not enough, and would have to be more than fledgling winds?

This time his hands glowed, gilded refrains, as he created tiny particles of wood, like chips, like splinters, like filaments, before lifting them in the air, tossing them her way.

She nodded silently and readied herself for the new test. As the wood chips came at her, she tried to redirect them all to a pile to her right, the general's left.

But after her panicked blasting away of the ice shards and the more focused random directions of the flames, this one didn't go so well (if you considered the ice round to have gone well). The first few made it more or less in the same area, but after that they were starting to either fall or pat against her sweater and fall to the ground, despite her best efforts to the contrary.

She dropped her hands and sighed. "I'm sorry. It's that lack of control. Or maybe I'm still resentful of it, and it knows that somehow?" She shook her head. "I don't know. But we need to keep trying."

He watched as the lack of control displayed itself; the wood chips weren’t hostile opuses, and so filtered and flickered off randomly without harm come to anyone nearby. He pondered at it, wondered how to embody or explain that act of composure. Sometimes it was the steel in one’s veins. Sometimes it was the mettle, the grit, borne from tragedies, trials, and tribulations, the ability to dig into the earth and take, take, take from it. Sometimes one was merely granted with it embedded in their persona, or had learned the act of overcoming, of striving, of not molding into those impetuous actions.

The beast paused, musing all the while, as he gathered more of the wood chips between his hands. “Concentrate solely on the movement and magic. Nothing else.” She’d have to grow from there: eventually many of them couldn’t focus only on the incantations, breaking off into combative measures and defenses. But they all had to start somewhere, getting beyond this point.

Then he tossed the tiny pieces of flaked-off timber again, waiting to see what she’d do.

She nodded at his words and when the wood chips were once again flung in her direction, she narrowed her eyes, letting the background blur. Focus.

She raised only one hand this time, and didn't move it. She let the air she released from her hand move, always in the same direction. That way, that way, to the right, ever to the right. She didn't try to pile them up necessarily; that was going to take a level of control she had to accept she didn't have... yet.

She'd been told to send them all in the same direction, and that she could do. The wood chips all wound up near each other, just not piled up. When she was done with the ones he'd thrown at her, she looked down at the one at her feet. She bent over, picked it up, and tossed it into the air. Without bringing her hand out, she concentrated and, as it fell, it made a sharp turn to land over near its woody brethren.

And then she exhaled and let the world refocus around her again.

Eyes watched – but couldn’t see anything amongst intangible lines of ether and vestiges, only the motion of the slivers of timber as they began to wind around one another, closer and closer, her focus bringing them in similar collaboration.

And when she was finished, he nodded, a satisfied dignity. “Better.” He cast his own incantations at the chips, watched as they burst into flame, and then were swallowed down into ash. “I think that is all we will do for today.” Basic maneuvers wouldn’t allow for much more, nor would her endurance and fortitude, not with so much concentration required. “If you keep practicing much the same, it will become easier.” And then stronger, building and billowing, the longer she stoked and finessed the enchantments. He tilted his head, considering, in those minute fractions of movement. “Do you have any questions?”
