Trick or Treat

Dusk settled over the Hollowed Grounds like any other Leafchange night. But on this night, its residents were astir. The story had been spun, the people had prepared, and now it was time for little Ludos to go about to catch people and spirits unaware. Would the people be wise and give their divine visitors a treat? Or would they be stingy and have evenings filled with tricks and deceit?

Playful trickster Ludos, visit door to door – will Weaver give it a sweet treat or risk a trick once more?

This is the starter for Ludo’s visit to Weaver! Please wait for your Ludo to arrive before posting.

Ludo, remember, this is supposed to be FUN so no terribly mean or long lasting tricks. Please use the Trick-or-Treat Table in the NPC account to do your posts!

Please try to have this thread wrapped by Saturday, April 18!

LUDO?
This particular Ludo had decided to get into character properly. So as it made its way to Weaver's door, it flitted from shadow to shadow. Although its mask was expressionless and its rags effectively masked its posture, it somehow gave off the impression of childish mischief. Eventually, it found itself in front of Weaver's house. It stood there for an indeterminate amount of time before it knocked, rags rustling a bit.

Standing to one side so it wasn't immediately visible for anyone opening the door, it lifted a rag-clothed arm and finally rapped its knuckles twice against the wood. "Trick..." it paused for dramatic effect, "or TREAT!" That last word came out in an unexpected, yet playful shout, and it bounced in place impatiently as it waited to find out which one it would get.

When the knock and the shout of ‘Trick or Treat?’ comes, Weaver is not surprised. Clearly, because she is actually home tonight, knowing she is supposed to be waiting for ‘Ludo’. Otherwise, she would have been at the Kraai working, but for now she’d left Korbin in charge. Shame she couldn’t have told her Ludo to come to the bar. His treat could have been a free drink. Not that that was really keeping in the spirit of the thing.

Weaver opens the door with a small wrapped package in her free hand. ”A treat, of course,” she says warmly, extending her hand with the package for Ludo to take. ”Nothing but the best for you.” Not that she has any idea who is beneath that mask, but she can flatter most anything. If Ludo opens the gift, he will find a wooden toy inside. There are holes in the small wooden board and pegs that fit into most of the holes. One hole remains empty, for of course, you need somewhere extra to move the pegs.

LUDO?
Obviously Ludo took the passage eagerly. It unwrapped it excitedly, and bounced in place with glee as the board was revealed. Immediately it began pushing the pegs around the small toy. "This is a very good treat!" Somehow, it gave the impression of beaming at her even though it was wearing an expressionless mask.

Lowering the toy now, it gestured with its free hand and indicated Weaver's home. "You shall be left in peace this Deepfrost." Then it giggled mischievously. "By spirits, at least."

With that it held out the toy. "Would you like to play too?" Games were always more fun with more than one person.

The Ludo responds in a way she thinks the real one might, and she smiles, amused. She cannot help but wonder who is actually under that costume, simultaneously impressed with the outfit. Ludo begins to play with the game before pronouncing that the evil spirits would leave her house alone. If only it were so simple, but the things that plagued her were not the spirits of the dead. No, they were the problems of the living.

”Sure, I’ll play,” she says, finding herself unable to say no. For all that she isn’t much of a game player, she seems to find herself playing them somewhat regularly now. Ludo seemed to be involved a shocking amount of the time, particularly when she has never met the real herald except once, in a crowd of people. Weaver grabs a peg and makes the first move. Or maybe it’s like the tenth move by now, since it had already been playing.

LUDO?
Bouncing up and down with equal parts excitement and impatience, Ludo watched Weaver make her move. Immediately, it brought the board right up to its mask, staring intently at the new configuration. Only when it had run through multiple iterations in its head did it lower the board again.

Then it moved not one, but two pieces, boxing the piece she'd moved in quite effectively. "Your turn!" Clearly unbothered by the fact that it had just broken the rules, it shoved it back towards her. Once again it began to bounce, obviously eager to continue playing with her. What wasn't obvious was whether it would be content just to play the game.

Ludo cheats. This actually seems like something the real Ludo would do, moving two pegs to box her in. It’s excitement is real enough, and she wonders if the wearer of this costume has met the real Ludo. Would the real Ludo bounce? Probably not, but she isn’t entirely sure.

Still, if it is going to cheat, so is she. Though honestly, she doesn’t really care about winning, and she doesn’t pay all that much attention to the move as she picks up a peg and simply puts it back down where she wants. So much for rules. She has never entirely understood the rules of this game anyway, though she knows people love it, so maybe she’s not cheating at all. Though she’s pretty sure she is.

LUDO?
As Weaver lifted the piece from the board and placed it in another spot entirely, Ludo went still. Somehow, it managed to give off the impression of annoyance. The piece she'd used rose from the board, as if from its own volition, and got tossed aside into the snow.

Tucking the board away under its rags, it straightened up. "Playtime is over. Thank you for the treat, and don't let the spirits get you." Speaking in a petulant tone, it gave out a mischievous (or malevolent?) chuckle. Then it turned, bending down to retrieve the piece it had thrown earlier. No point in going off without the full set.

Then it was soon swallowed by the frosty night.

Weaver watches as the piece rises of its own volition. Well, someone with telekinesis, apparently. She grins, amused that it can cheat but she cannot. None of this really bothers her, even when Ludo abruptly ends the game and Ludo bids her farewell. She watches as it collects the piece it had thrown and then is swallowed up by the dark Halo night.

Though she can’t feel the chill, she can tell it’s cold. Her breath frosts in the air, trailing after Ludo. Deepfrost is nearly upon them, and it’s not the spirits she has to fear. No, it’s the bitter cold, the endless storms, and the possibility of running out of food. With that, Weaver turns back into the house and closes the door behind her.
