It hadn't been completely lawless, but bad enough perhaps, depending on the point of view. "I was on the beach with Haai, and he was there and wanted to go fishing. But he hurt the worm, and then Sunjata came and we all went back to his house and played. Sunjata became a bird and I caught him!" she rattled off, happily recounting the adventure. There was perhaps a bit of self-righteous upset in the emphasis she put on the part with the poor mangled worm, speared on a fisherman's hook... but mostly because it was fun to have something to be angry about. There was also quite a bit of merciless glee in the way she told of Sunjata's ignominous capture.
She was about to say something else, when the dark shape in the water came into clearer view. Turning from an indistinct blob into the stuff of legend. Of tales and myths, of every bedtime story she ever demanded. It was a mermaid, and she waved at Seren. The girl gasped in shocked delight and took a firmer grip on Ronin's hand, not so much waving back - though she really meant to - as pointing with a trembling little hand.
"Daddy, look, it's a mermaid!" she breathed, too happy to even breathe properly.
