KORBIN
And round about his home the glory
That blushed and bloomed,
The wind and the cold were constant things in Halo. It was all he knew, all he had ever expected, all he ever wanted. There was a comfort to find in the vast emptiness of the landscape. In how it dwarfed him and made his problems seem insignificant. Standing alone on the flat expanse of the frozen sea, staring off towards a horizon that seemed endless, Korbin could appreciate just how little meaning his private worries and concerns meant in the grand scheme of things.

Huffing a quiet, melancholy laugh that felt odd in a throat that hadn't really managed to produce that kind of genuine sound in seasons, he hefted his bag and kept walking. There was a good spot for ice fishing up ahead... Weaver probably wouldn't approve of it as hunting, but he vastly preferred to sit and freeze his ass off for a few hours to chasing after luxere in the deep snow.

Luxere had made it through the portals before, Jigano knew. Whether it had been a fluke or if they could travel that way again he was uncertain, but with Deepfrost approaching he thought he would scout out some of the Halovian herds to see if they might be tracked for coaxing later, when LongNight neared. Broad silver wings flew high above where the air was thin and cold enough to burn like fire, the dragon a small dot in the sky high above.

He and Loren had seen herds crossing the Sea of Glass during their last flight over it together, and it seemed a safer place to look than the Fangs, where he might run into other dragons. Today, alas, there were no glowing-antlered deer to be found, and he huffed a frustrated sigh as he finally turned and began heading back...

Only to spot a small shape moving against the white below. Curious, he tilted his wings to angle a bit lower, trying to determine if it was a cannibal or one of Neron's subjects. Not that one could tell just from looking, of course, so he circled wide behind the young man and descended a half-mile back, shifting from scales to feathers as he dropped, white against white, until he reached the ground. Raven feathers weren't as good at providing warmth as thick fur, and he quickly shook them off for his far more comfortable foxform, trotting swiftly after the distant human's tracks and catching up to watch what he was up to from curious blue eyes.

KORBIN
And round about his home the glory
That blushed and bloomed,
Reaching his spot, using the position of the sun and the distant silhouette of the Fangs behind him to navigate, Korbin stopped and began to unpack his bag. Producing a simple folding stool, an ice drill and a short fishing rod along with a box of hooks and bait, he set to work. Removing the cover of snow, he began to work the drill on the ice, letting his thoughts drift while committing himself to the simple task. When he got too warm, a layer of clothing was removed, then he went at it again.

Once a good sized hole had been made, he set up the rod with hook and bait, popped it down into the dark depths below and settled in. It was an easy task, if perhaps a bit tedious. He amused himself by composing melodies as he worked, weaving notes together in a rich, pleasant barytone voice.

He was faintly aware of the fox as it approached, but thought nothing of it. The animal wasn't uncommon on the Tundra, and he did not have any fish for it to steal yet. No point wasting energy by driving it off yet.

Jigano arrived as the bundled up man was removing a layer, mid-drilling. The fox settled in atop a snowbank to watch curiously, but soon it became apparent that not only was the man not up to nefarious purposes, he was innocently fishing. Not as exciting as chasing down luxere or ursur, perhaps, but a good way to bring back some protein for the city.

Feeling better about the encounter, he popped his head up, ears perked when Korbin began to sing, cocking his head first one way, then the other as he evaluated the baritone and came to the delighted conclusion that the young man could sing in pitch as well as having a nice voice. He edged closer, staying on the other side of the hole for the moment, and settled back on his haunches, fluffy tail beating the ground a few times in appreciation of the music as he watched the other man with bright curiosity.

He had an audience. Now, Korbin didn't know much about foxes ,other than their preferred game and tendency to scarf off with whatever they could steal... but he was quite sure they didn't usually behave like this. Not so... boldly. His voice should have scared it off.

He stopped singing, and turned narrowed eyes on the animal. It looked like a regular fox, but that meant nothing. He looked like plain old raven in his own shift, after all. No, it was the behaviour that made something crawl down his back, the way the tail tapped to the rhythm he had been singing.

"If you're expecting a show, you better pay up first," he said, voice laced with suspicion. Willingly taking the risk of making a fool of himself rather than act familiar with someone he didn't know. If it was just a fox, fine. If not... He bit his teeth together.

His tail hadn't been following the rhythm, just thumping in instinctive appreciation of the nice sound of the man's voice, but the sudden cessation of that song had his tail going still again and his ears drooping at the unfriendly suspicion in the stranger's tone. Perhaps he should have expected it - the inhabitants of Halo could be a wary bunch, hard to thaw a welcome from - but out here on the Sea it had just been nice to see someone who wasn't a cannibal.

Ah well.

The fox got to his feet and then hesitated, uncertain whether to leave or try to earn the fisherman's friendship, but the demand for payment was difficult when he had no pockets, and a lingering dislike of transforming in front of strangers. Jigano whined softly and settled for trotting a little ways back before he sat down again to watch the young man from further away, hoping that would appease him, or at least calm him down again.

KORBIN
And round about his home the glory
That blushed and bloomed,
Hard eyes followed the fox as it retreated. Korbin would have greatly preferred if it just ran off, like a normal animal should have. It kept watching him, and the steady gaze grated on his nerves. He turned, shifting on his stool so he didn't have to look at it - a rather childish gesture - and turned his focus back to the fishing.

Inhaling, he sought that tranquile serenity again. Wanted to let the cold and the wind, the great emptiness settle his soul again... but peace evaded him.

There was a tug on the line. Then another. With a practiced jerk of a wrist, Korbin yanked the fishing rod, felt resistance in the new weight on it, and began to haul the line back up. There were three hooks attached to it, and two of them had been gulped down by middle-sized fish. The third was just gone, bait, hook and all. Not bad... not good either, but definitely not bad.

He made no move to acknowledge the fox, either to drive it off or invite it in. Perhaps hoping it might just give up and leave if he pretended it wasn't there at all.

It could have gone better. Jigano acknowledged that perhaps sneaking around being a curious little meddler wasn't always the best choice. But he didn't know until he tried, and sometimes it worked out.

Today did not seem to be one of those days, though. Quite the opposite as the young man turned away from him, giving him a literally cold shoulder. Jigano sat for a little while, contemplating his options, but there was an urge to mischief in him now that he suspected this dour man wouldn't appreciate. By all rules of tact and diplomacy he should turn around and leave him be, as the fisher seemed to desire.

But Halo was cold and unfriendly enough without being willing to reach out to others from time to time, so Jigano chose instead to press his luck, creeping forward slowly once again when Noah seemed focused on his task. By the time the fish was landed the fox was only a little ways back, and he looked at the slippery prey with eager interest, wondering how it tasted compared to the fish in the Oasis, or the Stonesong for that matter. He didn't try to dodge in for a nip - that was unforgiveably rude manners, no matter his shape - but he did dance a little, making a pleading little noise, not-quite a whine, as he looked from man to fish and back again.

KORBIN
And round about his home the glory
That blushed and bloomed,
For all that he tried to ignore the sneaky animal, he could not. Its presence was a pebble in the shoe, an itch between the shoulders, and like the teenager he was - caught helplessly in this never ending fit of pique - he was unable to just leave it alone. It slipped closer, little by little, and with every inch his jaws tightened a little more. Tension building.

It was clear the fish had caught its interest. The yammering, begging sound annoyed Korbin to no end, too pathetic in a way that went straight to his heart. Soft, yes, he was that, but he didn't want to give in to it. If he started now, who knew where it would end?

"Haul up your own damn fish," he grumped, a touch irrationally, and pulled his catch in close. Sure to keep an eye on the sneak-thief; he was not about to give his work away for free. Looking around, he longed for something to throw at the fox, but fortunately for both of them, all he saw was snow.

Well, it wasn't a snack, but it wasn't a kick, either. Jigano cocked his head as he considered the words, but ultimately there was the problem of not having a pole of his own, and not being the current bearer of a pair of opposable thumbs. To be fair, neither obstacle was insurmountable, but where would be the fun in that?

He circled around to the other side of the fishing hole and sat, looking from Korbin and then down to the water before looking at the human again, sly expectation in sky-blue eyes. It was probably unwise, but he was in a rare, mischievous mood and he couldn't help himself from reaching out with his Beastmaster ability to compel a small fish to swim for the surface, leaping up to flash momentarily in the air, snapping after a stray snowflake before diving down again. Jigano jumped to his feet, letting out an excited bark as he looked from Korbin to the water and back once more, encouraging the young man to set his line once more.

KORBIN
Leave my loneliness unbroken!
- quit the bust above my door!
He had a distinct feeling that he was being toyed with. Korbin was convinced that the fox was not a regular animal, which led to a few possible conclusions. Either it was a spirit, some enchanted beast, or another Attuned. And of the three, the last was by far the most plausible - and honestly, the most annoying. The fox might be in a playful mood, but Korbin was not. As evidenced by the feathering jaw muscles and the way his gaze grew harder and darker with every passing moment.

The flopping fish was the last drop. It was not natural. Fish didn't do that, not here, not like this. And the fox's seeming suggestion that he should obey its instructions really did not earn it any brownie points.

The irritation that had built up like a prickling tension under the skin burst from him in a rush of black feathers. Shifting even as he got to his feet, he was aloft and speeding towards the fox in a heartbeat, all beating wings, furious caws and pecking beak. Not really intending to hurt the other - animal, spirit or attuned, it didn't matter - but definitely with every intention of driving it off.

He was in no mindset for games. For company. For anything but being swallowed up by the empty expanse.
Quoth the Raven,
"Nevermore."

His attempts to bring a smile to the fisherman's face backfired spectacularly as the man rose, abandoning his rod and his fish for feathers and a heavy beak. Jigano might have been delighted to realize he was an Attuned - and a raven, too! - but the hostile attack was a clear warning to back off and not come back.

Jigano had overstayed his welcome on several occasions in the past, and not once had he been able to salvage anything from those encounters once the harsh words and physical violence came out. He might have learned his lesson slowly, but he did get there eventually. As Korbin came after him, the fox beat a hasty retreat. No words came through the Attuned bond from the raven, only fury and a thorough lack of patience, so the fox chose the better part of valor and scampered off across the Sea, his run eventually slowing to a trot as he opted to keep his foxy form for awhile longer, enjoying the feel of it after spending so much time in human form of late.

{Finish for Jigano}
