We're lost in the space between
who we are and all that we're trying to be

The traditions in LongNight preparation were damned and doomed to continue, given the amount of individuals still staying within the carnivorous contortions. Based on prior reports from anonymous citizens, and Wessex’s well-placed ears, the council had already begun to move along with proceeding and gathering as much as they could before Deepfrost truly settled its bone-chilling fangs into the rest of their footholds.

Choosing a more wide-open section of the Artisan’s area, the Sword had marked off a sanction meant for such handiwork. Already granted a successful hunt, with several deer and turkeys, the meat had been left amidst the Temple, vital and valuable resources for anyone who required them, and he’d taken the skins, hides, bones, and feathers, to ensure the rest of the animals would be used properly. Nothing to go to waste, especially within this season. Each artifact, each tissue, each marrow, would be utilized.

His intent was to create some rugs, carpeting, and other nuances to ensure quieter, softer contortions amongst LongNight. They could be placed along old, creaking floorboards, providing a hushed nuance, to keep more of the monsters at bay. Now all he needed were several more hands to complete the job.

--

This is an Artisan’s Guild PQ to help prepare carpeting/rugs for LongNight!

If you are not a member of the Artisan’s Guild, this would count towards your Seasonal Event requirements!

I’m looking for three more to help. First come/first serve, the PQ will move on when all slots have been filled.

1. Oliver
2. Jigano
3. Lily

OLIVER
It was almost customary that Oliver come and lend a hand during these troubling times. It was coming up on the anniversary of his arrival, so of course he was in a certain mood even more active than ever before. As well, he had received instruction from Safrin to prepare for LongNight and thus, when word went around of preparations done by the Artisans Guild, Oliver was the first arrive.

Stepping inside, Oliver found himself sighing at the welcomed warmth of the building. As the door shut behind him, He started to make his way over to Deimos, slowly shedding off the many layers he had on. First to go was the hat and scarf, followed by the rest of the pelts and coats he had adorned. Placing them down on a table, Oliver removed his shoes as well, not wanting to track water and snow into the work area.

Once that was done, he walked over to Deimos, a considerably smaller man now that his inches of warmth had been shed. "Here to help as much as I can." He offered with a small smile, ready to get progress for LongNight done.

There would be more hunts as the season progressed, but for the moment the Sword's early preparations had them stocked for the early days of Deepfrost, and his intention to make use of every piece of the animals had intrigued Jigano, piquing his interest. It was a chance to learn more, and so the loreseeker arrived, bundled in his white fur cloak. Isuma fluttered happily in his wake, in her element amid the Deepfrost snows, and he chuckled as she made her intentions to remain outside to play in the cold white fluff clear.

Inside, he shed his cloak and gave a companionable nod to Oliver and the General, rubbing his hands together to get the chill out of his fingers. "Hello, Guildmaster. I was hoping to take some notes back for the guild on what we do today, to add to the LongNight Preparation chapter in our Chronicle book." More explanation than was really necessary, but Deimos was probably used to that by now.

LILY
oh, cover your crystal eyes
and let your colors bleed and blend with mine

Though she’ll be in Torchline for LongNight (and perhaps longer, who knows!), Lily is still eager to help her neighbors prepare. Making a mental note to do a lot of singing and wandering in the woods before she leaves, the redhead has heard of some rug-making and decides that might be up her alley.

Wandering into the Artisan’s Guild, she quickly spots the hulk of a man and two others. There’s a cheerful “Hello!” to all and a whispered congratulations of marriage to Deimos (sadly, she’d been in Torchline whilst the wedding festivities had occurred), her gaze then falls to the skins and is genuinely curious how they’re going to go about this. All the rugs in Lily’s life have been woven, unless they’re pelts - oh. Ah. Well then, looks like she’s going to learn something new today.

We're lost in the space between
who we are and all that we're trying to be

As the Sword began to set out the supplies, grabbing hold of the hides from where they’d been hanging, drying, those providing aid, support, and capability began to arrive. Over his shoulder he nodded to Oliver, arching a brow at Jigano (not even remotely surprised at the notions of adding notes), and half a smile for Lily, whom he hadn’t seen in quite a while. Once he’d placed the pelts out, and grabbed the sack of feathers, he applied himself to the directions and task at hand. “Thank you for being willing to help. I would like to make some rugs to help muffle or hinder noise during LongNight.” One less issue or dilemma for the monsters to thrive upon.

Twisting back to the filaments and fragments on the nearby table, he proffered a spool of tough thread, some partially sinew from the hunted deer, others imparted from his creation incantations. A large bone needle, procured from those same prey animals, was also granted, given, and readily available. “I need one more to assist in sewing the bottom portions,” because they could start there, eyeing the amount of hides stretched out before them, while the rest were out, meddling along the woods. “And I need two to gather snow moss.” Which likely wouldn’t be too difficult, the season’s alterations and changes ensuring the plants were back and thriving. To the duo who proffered their capabilities, he granted two matching sacks, large enough that they’d be able to stuff quite a lot the flora with ease.

Please pick your tasks and then get started (Deimos will show the stitching portion in my next post).

We need:

- Two to go get snow moss
- One to help sew

OLIVER
It was far from surprising that Jigano showed up. It seemed both him and his fellow light-haired man were both interested in attending as many of these little meetings as possible. That was how they first met, after all. It only seemed suiting that Oliver would continue to meet up with him in such ways. A light blush painted his cheeks when Lily arrived, being reminded of the kiss they shared during Fiat Lux so long ago. Ouch.

Then it was time to actually begin working, so thank fuck he could hide away his embarrassment.

No offense but.... gathering snow moss is incredible boring. Oliver is part of the Artists Guild! Doing artsy things is kinda his duty. So of course he was immediately going to grab the most interesting task. Raising a hand, Oliver took a step forward "I can sew, so I'll help do that." It was honesty, Oliver could indeed sew. It wasn't hard to do, far from it, and it was actually something pretty damn relaxing.

"Lily! It's been too long," the bard greeted the lovely entertainer and fellow musician warmly, glad to see her doing well. He held off further conversation until Deimos had declared the tasks at hand, nodding agreement to the idea of rugs. "They should help retain heat, too, so people might not need to burn as much wood." Efficiency in design, serving two important needs in one simple package. Or at least, he hoped the packages would be simple.

He perked up at the mention of sewing skills needed; he had helped Hotaru assemble wedding finery, and long before that Isla had taught him well how to sew shut wounds with a variety of stitches in his neat, tiny loops. Still, he paused to glance at Lily, wondering if her own skills at making clothing might be better suited to the task while he and Oliver--

Ah. Never mind then. Chivalry might have been dead, but the bard bowed gallantly to the lady and offered his arm to walk with her back to the door they had so recently entered. "May I request the honor of escorting you on a promenade through the woods, fair Lily?" he asked with a wink to show he was gently teasing her.

Jigano would accept one of the bags from Deimos and then head (hopefully with Lily) out to see what could be found.

Indeed, Lily had been about to pipe up and volunteer for the sewing when Oliver beats her to it. With a bit of a shrug towards Deimos and Jigano, the entertainer graciously acquiesces the responsibility to the boy and silently indicates that she’ll go with the bard to hunt for snow moss. Lifting the hood of her wolf-fur cloak (did she mention she was wearing a wolf-fur cloak? She is. The one sunjata made it for her), Lily flashes curtsies back towards Jigano and with a light, tinkling chuckle, takes his arm near the elbow. “How gallant of you, sir bard. Lord knows us ladies are terribly prone to turning an ankle. Yes, an escort would be most preferable.”

So saying, she follows the white-haired man out into the cold and begins the familiar search for snow moss.

We're lost in the space between
who we are and all that we're trying to be

If Deimos was surprised by Oliver volunteering to sew, he didn’t show it. His face remained its impassive, reticent state, perhaps with the slightest arch to his brow, eyes wandering over to Jigano and Lily as they sauntered off, not requiring any further direction on his part. Then he steeled himself for impending instruction, passing the bone needle and thread to Oliver, before selecting two of the deer hides, matching them accordingly. “We will start at the bottom, and work our way to the middle.” It was fortunate Oliver already knew how to sew, so he wouldn’t have to demonstrate the weaving method, or even begin to explain how the Sword had learned (battlefield practicalities; many wounds to stitch). Thereafter, he began, starting as he’d previously stated, plunging the honed end of the needle and attached thread through the dual skins, threading them closely, tightly together, to ensure no future snow moss would fall out, and expecting Oliver to do the same.

Jigano and Lily would arrive at their destination amidst the woods, inclining their way through the forest until a clearing was laid out before them, providing an ample amount of snow moss not yet buried by increasing drifts and rising heights of ice and rime. However, it was already in use by another creature: a slumbering deer, nested and intertwined along the softened beds of flora. Perhaps it was injured, or sick? Why wouldn’t it have been alerted to their approach? Why hadn’t it already escaped, as soon as it heard the sounds of them entering the landscape? An intriguing notion indeed, and an answer could be administered, if they were curious enough to find out.

--

Deimos and Oliver have begun sewing.

Lily and Jigano have found their snow moss, but something is already using it!

OLIVER
It anyone had any problems or objections to Oliver sewing rather than gathering moss, nobody spoke it. That meant that in Oliver's mind, it was fine to continue on. He knew he'd have plenty opportunities to do some dirty work, such as prepping the temple once more, something he had done the previous year. It only seemed fitting that he repeat the action once more.

With the departure of Loren, Oliver had gone from a casual seamstress into someone who was trying to perfect it. He had no plans of opening a shop or really offering goods and mostly did it for his own amusement. It was relaxing and allowed him to chill out on hard nights. When he couldn't sleep, he could easily light a candle or sew by the fire. He had taken to repairing clothes or making blankets and quilts or other things of that nature. The first few turned out miserable, but overtime he had learned how to make a decent blanket. A rug wasn't far off and thankfully, it would hopefully help out in the long run.

Having discovered that he works best when not speaking, Oliver took the materials handed to him and started to work. He carefully made sure that the thread was properly secured on the needle before beginning his work, threading up the bottom of the two deer hides. A bone needle was certainly new, but he got the hang of it rather quickly. It was a smooth process, but also a silent one.

Oliver follows orders and starts to sew up the bottom of the deer skin, working towards the middle like he was asked.

"Most of the ladies I know are more prone to breaking ankles - other people's, not their own," Jigano mused with an apologetic grin at Lily's tart response. "Among other bones. Have you met Hotaru, by chance?" He chatted with the entertainer about shared acquaintances as they made their way to the woods - or in silence, if she would prefer - and set about their task.

The deer was a perplexing sight, and he glanced at Lily with a raised brow of confusion. "I can try and communicate with it?" he suggested, reaching out with his Beastmaster ability to gently nudge the deer awake and see if it would move to another nest while they gathered some of the moss beneath it.

He also kept an eye out for any Wicker Women, wary of the trees' hallucinogenic sap and swift reflexes.

LILY
oh, cover your crystal eyes

Lily offers a dramatic sigh as they trudge along. “Alas, I think I lie somewhere in the in-between, neither breaking bones nor unable to walk through a forest on my own.” Unremarkable in that regard, she is no more Amalia or Kiada than she is, well, the woman who arrived here two Deepfrosts ago. And in her mental yearnings to be more than average, she realizes she doesn’t know the woman he just spoke of. With a slight tilt of her head, Lily thinks for a moment and then shakes it. “No, I’m afraid I don’t. Have you met Josh?” She should tell him that the man might come seeking him out.

Lily pauses to pick up a small tuft, disentangling herself from Jigano’s arm, and doesn’t notice the deer at first. “Sure…” the entertainer agrees as she places the small bit in the bag, then crouches down. As Jigano does whatever it is he does, she inches closer to the deer, trying to see if she can spot any signs of an injury or something wrong with the creature.

We're lost in the space between
who we are and all that we're trying to be

Deimos was surprised by the silence from Oliver’s presence – used to either apologies, apprehension, or some combination of the two. But he didn’t complain, remaining quiet himself, stitching and weaving the hides together, and only ceasing when he reached the middle on his side. Trusting Oliver to continue in his capabilities, the Sword moved on to the next two hides, pressing them together in the same way as the first, following similar accord and actions.

The blacksmith would find himself very successful, so perhaps his talents did have quite a range, the rug coming together nicely, no overly large spaces, no snagged thread, the bone needle smoothly transitioning through. Once he’d completed that one, he could maneuver to the next, and they’d be set-up nicely for when Lily and Jigano returned with their wares.

At the Sage’s Beastmaster insistence, the deer awakened from its repose – immediately alarmed. Its eyes bulged and widened, ensuing a panicked scrambling to its feet, but Lily had been correct in her assertion; the creature was obviously injured, swaying dramatically, pitching over to the side. Still, it attempted to escape and evade, lurching to the right on a pathetic hop, leaving the two capable of grabbing their found snow moss pile, but perhaps a little guilty over the plight of the other creature. It wouldn’t be too long before something else snagged it; a predator’s keen sense would find it – only a matter of time.

--

Deimos and Oliver were very successful in their rolls, and may continue sewing up the hides.

Jigano’s Beastmaster compelled the deer to get up and move off the snow moss, but its severely injured. Will Lily and Jigano do anything about it, or leave it to its doom?

No post order! PQ will move along in 48 hours or when everyone has posted.

"Then I shall enjoy your company without a further thought given to ankles whole or otherwise," the bard assured his snow-moss comrade as they walked, glad enough for the extra warmth on one side, even with their thick cloaks to keep out the Deepfrost chill. "Josh... hmm. Can't say that name rings a bell, either," he admitted, trying to find a face to put to the name. "Is he a new Outlander?" New names generally were, though Jigano supposed the man could be from Halo or Torchline, and 'outlander' only compared to the Grounders.

He let Lily begin their task as he tried to coax the creature on the biggest patch of moss to move, but it wasn't until it stood up that he realized it was injured. Jigano hesitated, the predator in him content to let nature take its course. He glanced to Lily to see what she thought, wincing a little as he saw the deer stumble from the corner of his eyes. "I can try to Heal it, if you can help to calm it?" he suggested. "You sang to the luxere last year, I remember, when we were leaving the Guildhall, keeping them from panicking and leaving us all in the dark. It would be worth trying again, here."

If Lily wanted to try to help the creature, Jigano would wait for her to decide how, and then attempt to approach close enough to reach it with his Mastered Healing magic.
