It’s a little weird being stuck in Halo, which is really rather strange given the fact she only recently started using the portals at all. Still, over the last few seasons, she’d gotten used to coming and going. Though with the Kraai up and running, and quickly growing in popularity, Weaver has quite a lot to keep her occupied here. Maybe it’s good that the temptation of the portal is gone right now. She could use this time to work on her relationship with Korbin while proving to him that she wasn’t as useless as he seemed to think.

Though it is early in Deepfrost, the temperatures are already freezing. With nothing better to do, Weaver makes her way to the Kraai early. It will be quiet this time of day, and she usually leaves afternoon operations to her staff, but she could use the time to check on her latest batch of cider and perhaps try working on a few recipes.

Despite her cold resistance magic, Weaver still bundles up to walk the few doors from her house to the Kraai, moving quickly even though it doesn’t feel as cold as it is. She may not feel the cold, but that doesn’t mean she won’t freeze all the same. She’s in the Kraai in no time though, making her way behind the bar to hang up her cloak and grab Maea’s book of recipes. There’s a new tattoo on her wrist, currently covered to help it heal. It had taken her a while to figure out what to get for Maea, but she finally had, actually going to the tattoo artists shop to get it rather than knocking on his door late one night while partly drunk. He’d be rather shocked, actually.

My attendance at the Kraai had become a fairly regular occurrence; it was warm, it stocked good drink, alcoholic or otherwise, and one could socialise if they wanted to. I enjoyed the hum of the busy environment, sometimes engaging in conversation and laughter, other times letting it flow all around me. It was the most interaction one could ask for during a time where the outdoors was potentially life-threatening due to the bitter, bone-biting cold. I was a bit of an ambivert, prone to introverted behaviours where I enjoyed and needed my alone time to recharge and process my thoughts, but also enjoying some social activities when comfortable and with familiar faces.

I had been here since just before the lunch rush, joining some acquaintances for a meal before sitting back at the bar to grab a drink. As I pulled up a stool, I noticed Weaver arrive with some interest, remembering with a wry grin our first meeting - she had been witness to me spectacularly failing to gather some planks of wood for Loren's healer's college building.

Watching the woman behind the bar reach for a recipe book, I can't help but notice the wrapping on her wrist that might indicate a wound being healed by 'traditional' means - I was surprised, as I learned more about this world, I learned that magic was rampart, and I had faith that had Weaver approached Loren for assistance the healer would have aided her without question.

"Hey Weaver," I say friendlily, smiling as I hoped to get her attention. "What's going on with your wrist?" I gesture vaguely at my own, attempting to mimic the position of the wrap on it, concern crinkling my brows as I await an answer.

She hadn’t really been paying much attention to the people at the bar. The place was well staffed at the moment for how quiet it is, so she knew she didn’t need to work yet. She’d take her place behind the bar later tonight, either with Korbin or one of the other bartenders, and she’d drink and flirt her way through the evening as she usually did. Korbin would scowl at her for that, because he didn’t quite seem to understand that her behavior was calculated. She knew exactly what she was doing, and so did Sunjata when he’d given her the bar. The point was not to be well behaved, but rather, the opposite. To gain the trust of her drunken clients and learn their secrets.

A familiar voice cuts into her thoughts though, and she turns, finally paying proper attention to see Chuy there. ”Chuy. Good to see you.” He’d become something of a regular face around here, and she really did love her regulars. The more the merrier. ”New tattoo,” she says, holding up the wrist with the bandage. ”Honestly, it’s healed, I’m just a bit superstitious and I still like to wrap them for a day. Just to make sure I don’t accidently mess it up.” Not that she was likely to do so, but still, she couldn’t help herself. Though she’d healed the wound herself, her healing skills far subpar to Loren’s, but at least her magic was capable of something so small as the pinpricks left behind from the needle.

”Are you busy or bored?” she asks, not really sure why she’s going to invite him along except that she always likes company and a second opinion. ”I was about to go check on a batch of cider and maybe work on some of these recipes. Care to join me?” She holds the book up slightly, a well-loved notebook that was full of Maea’s brothers recipes. She may be dead, but Maea was certainly not gone.

Weaver mentions a tattoo, and I raise my brows in surprise - not necessarily that she had gotten tattoos, but that there was a tattoo artist in Halo, of all places. I expected as much from the reputation of a place like Torchline (though I was yet to venture there myself, it sounded a lot like the beaches from before-home, and so I was keen to investigate further when the seasons permitted). I smile friendlily and comment, "Oh, nice." I nod at her comment of keeping it covered for at least a day despite the healing magic she no doubt already sought (or conjured herself? I was unsure). "Not a bad habit to keep," I agree, the doctor inside me still fascinated by the healing magics that exist in this world.

Her proposal surprises me again, but I welcome it all the same - it was nearing that time of afternoon where I didn't quite know what to do with myself, all the errands for the day had been run, all jobs that could be competed already completed; it would be nice to have something to focus my mind on, to busy my body and maybe do something useful in the meantime. "Happy to help," I confirm with a nod and a wide grin, placing my now-empty cup on the bar and moving towards her, pausing as I await her lead to where we would find this cider and the ingredients for whatever recipes were going to be cooked tonight.

"Which recipe has taken your fancy for this afternoon?" I enquire, curious because basically every recipe was new to me as a freshly arrived Outlander to these parts.

They needed something to do in Halo. Though it was a small place, you’d find the basics as long as you weren’t looking for fresh produce. But ink and needles? They definitely had those, and they had plenty of hard people who didn’t mind being stabbed for hours on end. ”It’s probably silly, but I admit I don’t really care. I’d be pretty pissed if I managed to smudge it after sitting for hours.” The dove was small but detailed, as all the artist's work was, and it had taken a few hours. Not so long she needed multiple sessions at least, as she had for the ravens on her back.

She smiles as he agrees to help, coming around the bar and waving vaguely for him to follow as she leads them into the cellar. There are a number of barrels and jars down here. She really needed to pester Deimos to make her the appropriate equipment, but this was working well enough for now. ”Something wintery. I found one that I think will work nicely with the cider I’ve got brewing.” She flips through the book until she finds it again. ”Toasted oak, cinnamon, and nutmeg.”

”Had a bunch of juice shipped in before Deepfrost, and have been running it through the process as fast as I can so it’ll last for the season. Depending on the amount of sugar in the juice, you get a different result. The current batch is a blend, largely dry with just a little bit of some of the sugary stuff in it.” She makes her way to one of the finished bottles, grabbing two glasses and pouring a little bit. ”Stop me, if you don’t care about any of this,” she says with a chuckle, handing him the glass to taste test before she starts sticking stuff in it. ”I like to mess a little bit with a small batch and then finish the larger one. Take a sip, tell me what you think and then I’ll add things into it.”

I nodded along in understanding; though I had never had a tattoo myself, I could imagine the frustration I would feel had I spent hours getting poked by a sharp needles only to mess it up in a moment of carelessness. It was oddly curious to wonder whether she had any more tattoos that I hadn't seen, but I did not pry further at this time.

I listen keenly as she begins to explain bits and pieces of the brewing process, having little experience in it myself, though the science side of it was familiar enough to me. Accepting the cup she offers with a grin, I reassure her, "Oh no, please continue. You'll find me a very willing student." Raising the glass to my nose, I try to smell it by swishing it around a little bit, before taking a sip.

It was a curious mixture of very dry, with a sweet aftertaste chasing the flavours down my throat. "Drier than I usually prefer," I admitted, though I was quick to amend my words, "but with a sweet aftertaste that is very pleasant. Do you like it?" Lifting the cup back to my lips, I gladly swallow the remains in my next gulp, swishing the liquid around on my tongue before letting the sweet chaser kick in like a dessert after dinner.

She smiles, pleased to find someone who feels like listening to her ramble. Loren would have too, though he was rather busy given his own full time occupation. Korbin had no such interest (or the ability to hear, at the moment), and though Noah might care they usually ended up talking about hunting. Their conversations might change with her out in the field less, though she will never cease to be a hunter. ”I like willing students, though I admit, I know almost nothing about you. Where did you come from, and what did you do?” she asks, curious about their new Outlander resident.

Weaver sips from her own glass as well, listening to his assessment. It’s exactly what she’d been going for. ”Well don’t worry, I have sweeter drinks on the menu. But I wanted dry because the flavors should give it a little more sweetness, and I don’t want the sugar to overpower.” She puts the glass down, going to a nearby shelf full of various spices and extracts. It is her favorite shelf, collected from Torchline and the Grounds, full of things you cannot get in Halo. She grabs a stick of cinnamon and a nutmeg seed, along with a grater, grating a bit of each into the glasses. ”I’ll actually infuse the batch with these in a barrel which will impart the oak flavor too, but I just like to make sure I think it’ll work before I waste all that booze. Mix,” she says, a command, using her finger to swirl her own drink. She’s not all that proper. She sips again, letting the taste linger on her tongue, and then waiting for Chuy to give her an assessment.

Weaver was something of an acquaintance to me, so far. I held no real knowledge of her outside of our interaction in building Loren's school, and occasionally seeing her when I hung out at the Kraai (which wasn't every day, but it was also very regular). I felt humbled by her extension of this opportunity to learn more, not just about the business she ran, but about her too - the passion and enjoyment I could see it stir within her told me as much about her as the words she spoke.

It was nice.

"A place called Earth. I was a farmer, and a doctor for animals, called a veterinarian." I provide the information openly, easily, hoping to breed trust and maybe friendship between us. "My profession involved spending a lot time learning," I add with a soft laugh and a smile.

I nod along to her talk of the drink - I admittedly had a sweet tooth when it came to my drinks, and I was a softie about it to boot. It didn't take much alcohol for my mind to go foggy, and I hated anything that made me feel less in control, so I did not indulge in the stuff too often. The cider here was fantastic, though, and it was truly fascinating to learn more about it. Weaver obviously knew her stuff, and I couldn't help the curiosity rise within me about that topic.

But before I could ask my question, I was given instructions, which I complied with readily, swirling the liquid around the glasses to ensure the spices are sufficiently dissolved and mixed in. I lift it to my lips and tip it in, smacking my lips together as the flavours danced along my lips and tongue and throat.

"Reminds me of apple pie," I admit, admiration on my face. "Delicious," I lift the glass to my lips again to take another drink.

"How long have you run this place for?"

She tries to get to know everyone, honestly. Though she certainly does not literally know everyone in Halo, she is familiar with most of them. Though of course she has a particular interest in those that frequent the Kraai or do things like help build a school for Halo. Though he was new, he seemed to be settling into Halo well, or at least from the little bit she’d seen. Still, she collects friends, because you never know when you might need a few more of them.

He mentions Earth, and she nods slightly. ”You are not the first person I’ve met from Earth. Though how are you finding Halo with our lack of farms? There are a few pets and many companion animals, at least.” Though really, they didn’t have tons of animals either. ”For that matter, how are you finding Halo in general?”

To be honest, when it comes to the booze, she is still learning. The Kraai is new and so is the opportunity to brew, though Maea’s brother had been thorough in his notes and she’s been able to pick a lot up pretty quickly. The notebook was well loved when she’d gotten it, and it was even more so now. Weaver has added her own notes all over, dog-eared pages of particular interest, and has begun to worry slightly that the poor book may need to be copied.

She takes a sip, waiting for Chuy’s assessment though before nodding, her smile pleased. ”Just what I was hoping for,” she says, draining the glass a little too easily before putting it down. ”So I’m going to take the finished cider,” she says, gesturing to a few jugs of the stuff, ”and pour it into those barrels over there for the oak flavor.” Again, she gestures to the barrels. ”Actually, would you mind doing the pouring?” She adds, going back to the spice shelf to grab what she needs, though as her hand reaches to a bottle, she feels something fuzzy and pulls her hand back with a slight yelp of surprise.

She reaches out again, tugging a bottle away to reveal a decent sized spider, maybe about the size of her hand. ”What are you doing back there buddy?” she coos to the spider, not afraid (if you can pull the guts out of a luxere, you can handle a large spider). She reaches her hand out, encouraging it to crawl to her, which it does with a few stumbling steps and hiccups. Weaver chuckles, turning to find Chuy. ”I’ve never seen one of these before, though Sunjata warned me they might sneak in with the wine shipments. Wine spiders,” she says with a chuckle. ”Want to see?”

It wasn't the first time I had heard of an Earthling coming to this realm, and so her words did not shock me as much as another's had. Still, question rose in my mind, wanting to know more about this supposed other Earthling - where were they from? When were they from? Were they still alive? Could I meet them?

"It's definitely unique," I laugh good-naturedly, shrugging. "It's been a learning experience, to say the least. I am slowly finding my place here - hopefully as time goes on I'll be able to contribute more and feel less like I'm surviving purely on the generosity of complete strangers." I spoke with nothing but gratitude for those complete strangers (who were becoming less strange and more familiar as time went on), and with honesty in my declaration to want to contribute more to the land.

"No problem," I finish off the last of the liquid in my glass with a satisfied smack of my lips, before putting it down and moving towards the jugs she has indicated. Just as I bring the jugs to the barrels, I hear her ask a rather odd question.

Looking over, I see she is not addressing me at all, but some critter she has found in amongst her spice shelves. Putting down the jugs and making my way over to her, I nod as she offers to give me a look.

"What a beauty," I exclaim quietly, in very much a Steve Irwin kind of way. I was a lover of animals great and small, and this one was as fascinating as all the rest I had come to meet in Caido so far. "It seems a bit… drunk?" I question, unsure of what I was observing, if spiders even had the ability to get 'drunk'.

His answer brings a smile to her face. It’s honest, that answer. Halo was unique, and the people were generous but tough. They would expect him to contribute at some point, and yet, they would always make sure he had what he needed. No one was left out in the cold, figuratively and literally speaking, in Halo. There was always someone to lend a hand, because at some point, someone else had lent them a hand. It was a tough life, but a good one. ”You’ll find your feet here soon enough, I’m sure,” she offers. ”If you need a job in the meantime, I’m sure we can find you something here. Might not be that exciting though.” Particularly with Deepfrost upon them, the Kraai was busy, and she wouldn’t mind having an extra set of hands if he was bored.

Weaver chuckles as he comes over to examine the spider, glad to have found the thing with someone who wasn’t afraid of them. Wine spiders do get rather large, from what Sunjata had told her, though this one was still pretty small. ”They like to drink wine, as their name might suggest. Little bugger must have slipped in with the last shipment from the VlamVloed.” Weaver hands the spider to him, if he’s willing, and goes to grab a bowl and a bottle of wine. She pours some of the wine into the bowl and places it on a nearby barrel. ”Here, put him down,” she says, nodding toward the shallow bowl.

"Oh, thanks," I responded to her offer of employment with a touch of surprise, but mostly gratitude. "I'll certainly help out wherever I can." I nod, thinking that I'd be pretty ordinary behind the bar, but I could cook alright, and probably clean up after guests in the lodge bedrooms after their stays (I wasn't above doing a bit of housekeeping). I could, at the least, make myself useful.

A smile touched my face as I watched the spider, ascertaining that it didn't seem able to cause any harm to humans (with the way Weaver handled it, I assumed it was safe to do so). While I preferred animals of the mammalian or avian variety, I wasn't about to become squeamish around a spider - I grew up on Australia for crying out loud, I've met spiders larger than dinner plates.

I happily held my hand out for it, curling my fingers up slightly so that it wouldn't wander too far. It was far more docile than the spiders of Australia, who wanted nothing more than to run away, and if they couldn't do that, bite. Weaver prepares a spot for the arachnid to be able to indulge, and I oblige in her instructions to let him down, my scientist's fascination with the creature gleaming enough knowledge from this close encounter to be satisfied for now.

"Perhaps he can become the bar's mascot," I comment as I watch the creature enjoy itself in the little haven we have given it. "We could set him up with lodging and food easy enough." I shrug, smiling all the way. "Might give the regulars something different to look at during Deepfrost."

She gives him a nod, thinking nothing of it. After all, it would help her out to have another set of hands. ”There’s always cleaning to do,” she says, though that is a rather boring job. ”Or the cooks keep complaining about how much food they need to prep. They’d love another set of willing and able hands if you are decent with a knife.” Seriously though, it was their job to prep the food, and she was growing rather tired of them complaining about it. Yes, it was busy, but they’d expected that much for Deepfrost. Besides, it’s not like they had a large menu of food. There was only ever a handful of things available each day, but men always needed something to complain about.

Soon enough, the spider is on the table, drinking the wine with as much gusto as Weaver downs whiskey. A spider after her own heart. ”You read my mind, it seems. We can take him upstairs and let him live among the bottles behind the bar.” There weren’t many in Halo that would be bothered by a spider, and really, he was a drunk spider. Too adorable for words, watching him stumble and hiccup. ”Little buddy needs a name, I suppose. Buddy would work.”

She leaves the spider for now, turning back to the spice rack to grab the cinnamon and nutmeg. ”Alright, back to work, shall we?” she asks, hands full of the spices now. ”Tell me something else about yourself as you pour.” Already a demanding boss, but at least she was a fun boss.

I smile as she mentions cleaning and cooking tasks, nodding in easy agreement. I could work a knife - I grew up on a farm and was a veterinarian by trade, I was familiar with the preparation of a carcass, from keeping an animal meant for the dinner table alive and healthy to humanely ending their life in a way that means the meat stays tender and fresh. "Can do," I confirm simply, before we move on to another topic, though a strange comfort blossoms within me, a contentedness that somewhere, at least, I was wanted, that I could be useful. It would do wonders to keep my mind ticking over as we navigate this long, dark, cold season ahead.

I was pleased that we were thinking along similar trains of thought with regards to the spider - Buddy, as he would now be known. "Buddy is perfect," I agree, chuckling as the arachnid bathes himself in his little bowl of wine. "Steady on there mate, save some for later," I was bent down to speak directly to Buddy, looking up as Weaver returns to the task at hand.

I follow, returning to my place beside the jugs and barrels, grasping the first one firmly in my workman's hands and obediently commenced pouring. "Hmm," I consider with my deep voice, wondering at what she would be interested to know about me. "Upon entering this world, I learned that I am Attuned. My shift is a clouded leopard - which fits my curious nature, I suppose."
