KORBIN
And round about his home the glory
That blushed and bloomed,
From the attempts to dig a path to the storage rooms in the Palace, it was quickly made clear that he would need more hands and a dedicated effort. The building was just too big for any one person to go through it all, and the people of Halo needed the resources within as soon as possible.

With that in mind, Korbin began to organize a proper search, and gathered up all the available hands he could find. There were three main goals with this; to retrieve any food that had not been ruined when the Palace was destroyed, to gather up all the firewood they could find to make sure no one had to be cold, and to gather up any supplies from the Infirmary that could be found. The room itself was not usable, but he had some hopes that something could be salvaged.

---------

This is a PQ to recover food, firewood and medicinal supplies from the ruined parts of the Palace! Each person who shows up to help will be taking charge of a group of NPC's. Please note below your post which task you would like to do.

1. Chulane
2. Noah

CHULANE

Apparently, traumatic events were just a thing that happened on the regular in this realm. It wasn't that the vet didn't believe when he heard tales of fantastic, cosmic, great power being thrown around causing disasters, but until he had experienced one first hand, he could barely comprehend and appreciate the full impact such events had on one. But, he was a vet, he had dealt with emergencies before, with devastating injuries - usually on animals, sure, and some animals had needed his help, either to treat simple wounds or to find a swift, humane death, but humans also needed care, and he was happy to transfer his skills in traditional healing methods to those who needed it in this time.

The ruin that remained of the Palace was something he knew would need to be addressed, and so when word was passed around that Korbin was seeking able hands to do the job, Chuy did not hesitate.

He took care in the wreckage, not wanting to needlessly disturb or disrupt the remains that would cause more damage, and potential injury. The farmer was more sedate in his approach to Korbin compared to the last time he arrived at the Palace to help the young man, his mind heavy with the recent disaster, his thoughts far more sober and serious as he processed everything that had happened, and considered everything that needed to be done now, in the aftermath.

"Korbin," he said with a nod in simple greeting, a small smile touching the corner of his lips, but not transforming his whole mouth like it used to. Chulane had done his best to grant the boy's wishes of solitude and separation from the likes of him, except for when he asked for help - in those circumstances, the farmer would do whatever he could, personal feelings (or lack thereof) aside.

Noah

Noah did not travel far from the aftermath. His days were filled with trying to repair his own home and repair the damage to other people's homes. Today, however, when Korbin came looking for people to help in the Palace, he followed. He left Delphine to do what she pleased, but let he know he would be going to the Palace to help clean up things there. After his time at the Shrine, he had only been able to ask questions rather than make statements, and it proved incredibly frustrating. He tried not to speak if he didn't have to.

When he arrived he eyes the small crowd of others that had gathered. He recognized almost all of them, knew their names and their stories. He stood before a group of men he knew to work in the redheaded lumberjack's shop, as well as the large, burly man himself. Noah had helped the redheaded man gather firewood with Korbin's lead from the Palace before, so he may as well help again. He watched as the man from the bar approached Korbin. He wasn't sure of his name, even though a few weeks ago now he had watched him play drinking games in the Kraai. He stepped towards Chulane, reaching his hand out towards him. "Noah Olson?" He gave his name and awaited he handshake, hoping that the man would not think he did not even know his own name. If it came, he would then turn his attention briefly to Korbin.

"We'll gather all the firewood we can find?" He gestured back to the group of lumberjacks and shop hands he had been standing with briefly. The way his voice turned up at the end of his sentences and turned them into questions made color fire into his cheeks, though with the windburn it was not very noticeable.

WESSEX
the wraith
Gone long enough to miss all the major excitement, but back in time to see Halo completely changed; a distraught merchant she knew told her what had happened, so Wessex set back out from the Kraai to see if she could be of any assistance. Two familiar figures pull her towards a small group (little does she know she’s met all three). With a clear head about the whole thing and a natural resistance to cold, The Wraith should be of assistance where she can. In fact, she hopes the men  have their extra layers on, as she can imagine the biting cold they’re facing.

“Noah,” she says with a nod to the hunter she’d met in the Fangs, and then “Chuy,” with a smile to her most recent acquaintance, Wessex offers a hand and her name to the boy who seems to be organizing. Good for him for stepping up. “I’m Wessex.”

KORBIN
And round about his home the glory
That blushed and bloomed,
Korbin nodded a greeting to Chulane, his own returning smile as small, but lacking the vitriol of before. The presence of the man was not as irksome as it had been, no doubt because the raven had too much on his mind to consider personal matters. "Chulane, thank you for coming. Will you take a group and dig your way into the storage rooms? We're going to need all the food you can bring back." The rooms had been in the basement of the Palace, and now lay buried under a good deal of rubble. An attempt had been made to clear a path there already, but it was interrupted by a large pile of rock and glass. That would need to be cleared before any further progress could be made.

Noah's appearance, along with that of the red-bearded lumberjack, were welcome sights, and Korbin breathed a bit easier at the sight of them. It struck him as odd that his old friend would ask for a task rather than just take it upon himself to do it, but the young man nodded all the same, easily accepting the suggestion. "Of course, Noah. Take as many people as you need, it's heavy labor." They would have to shovel their way across the rubble-strewn courtyard to the store-houses that stood next to the soldier barracks. There, it remained to be seen if the roofs of the storage facilities till were intact.

Then, a stranger appeared in the midst of them, and Korbin was taken aback. The woman was not one he had seen only sensed around in the Citadel before, and certainly not since the season changed. She seemed familiar with the others in the group however, which only surprised him more. He stared openly at her for a moment; then clasped the offered hand in a firm grip, gaze steady despite his young age. "Korbin Hale, the Warden's overseer," he replied. The new title felt strange, but not unpleasant on the tongue. He regarded her, with head tilted in a birdlike manner. "Pleasure to meet you, Wessex. You're not from here, are you? I suspect the Warden will want to speak to you, when you have a moment... She's set up at the Kraai. For now, I would appreciate if you could take a group and head for the infirmary. If there's any equipment or medicines to be salvaged, bring them back." It would be difficult, as the room had been in the broken part of the Palace, but he still wanted to give it a try. She would have to find a staircase that had not been broken, and hope that the upper floors held steady enough to walk on still.

He looked over the groups, and called up a few people for himself, until each team had five members, excluding the leaders. "I'll take my group and seal up all the rooms that have been damaged in the Palace," he said. "There's no chance of rebuilding until the season turns, but there might be some uses to find for the parts that still stand."

Making sure everyone had the tools they might need - shovels, rope, sturdy gloves and bags for carrying supplies back - he nodded to each of the groups.

"Let's get started."

-----------

First round!

Chulane - needs to clear rubble from the path down into the basement, to get to the food storage!

Noah - need to shovel snow to get to the wood storage up on the courtyard.

Wessex - needs to find a stairway that leads up on the higher levels, to see if there's enough left of the infirmary to gather supplies from.

WESSEX
the wraith
Holding the kid’s gaze for as long as he wants to, the Wraith shakes his hand and then nods. Hale. Related to Weaver. Overseer.

“No,” she says easily. “I’m a Grounder born and bred. I was just at the Kraai, and the stallkeeper Mavis filled me in on what’s happened, but I’ll head back. Figured you could use someone who can stand the cold right now.” Taking a look towards the fallen building, she nods again. “Infirmary it is.” Gesturing towards the small band of volunteers alloted to her, she indicates that they should follow her.

In reality, it is Wessex who should be following them, as the Wraith had little internal knowledge of the Palace and its wings. With a bit of sly maneuvering, she manages to get someone else to lead to the right area, at least. From there, Wessex is able to use her keen sight to examine a bit further than normal human eyes might, and she spots a bit of bandages rolling this way and that in the wind. It’s on a second floor, so first the Ascended searches for a way up - otherwise she’ll be the only one able to get up there.

The group finds a debris-covered staircase and begins to move the obstacles. When it’s all clear, Wessex places a tentative foot on the first step, taking the stairs gingerly, one step at a time.

CHULANE

"Chuy," his deep voice returns, along with a handshake to the new face, one who he had no doubt seen around the township before but hadn't ever had occasion to require a name from him. He was pleased to be making more acquaintances, more connections, hoping that he himself would eventually make a positive impression on the Natural folk in this world.

[say{\"Wessex,\"[/say} he supplied with a nod and a returning smile, before listening intently to Korbin's words.

Some surprise might have coloured his expressions as he overhead Korbin explain his new 'rank' to Wessex, but then he conceded that perhaps he should not be so. Nepotism was alive and well, it was what had made up the ranks previously and evidently that trend would continue. Chulane couldn't cast judgement - Halo was a small town, everyone was bound to be related to someone else in some way or another. And besides, the farmer was far more interested in supporting the town than leading it - as long as he was permitted to keep doing that, he wouldn't comment or complain on whoever held governing positions.

"Can do," He responds simply to Korbin, before taking a few steps away to address the gathered extra hands and explain the task that needed to be done. "Let's set up a long line, so that none of us are carrying heavy debris over large distances." He demonstrates with a bit of rubble, having each person pass it along a short line to ensure they understood. "Let's go," rubbing his hands together, he leads the way, focussing first on the rubbing nearest to them, wanting to make a wide, clear path. As pieces were removed, and the way got clearer, the assembly-line of sorts got longer, as they were slowly but surely able to access further into the palace, towards the basement storage.

--

Chuy demonstrate an 'assembly-line' approach where his team will be able to extract the debris without any one person needing to carry a single piece over long distance. They get started on clearing a wide path towards the basement of the palace.

Noah

Wessex arrived and Noah offered her a nod in greeting, not desiring much to speak unless he needed to. He noted the familiar man's name to memory, and just listened. After his uneventful and disheartening prayer at the shrine, he had only been able to speak in sentences that ended as questions and it was starting to frustrate him. Despite his own frustration, however, he needed to pull his weight to help Halo recover the Eirachi attack.

He lifted a brow at Korbin as he introduced himself to Wessex with his new title, and offered him a big smile. Korbin was most certainly moving up in the world, and he hoped it would give the younger attuned a new lease on a brighter attitude. As the newly appointed advisor gave instruction, Noah nodded along. They would need to work quick, as the cold was going to grab hold of them without mercy soon enough. Waving for his group to follow him, Noah headed towards the wood storage that they had filled before Deepfrost set in.

Unfortunately, snow piled up around and over it. With a deep sigh, Noah spoke. "Does anyone have water magic?" He looked around and one person stepped forward, a small and wiry man probably not any older than Korbin. He revealed that his magic was weak, but he could try his best. Noah nodded and let him go to work. "Everyone else please be careful? Let's try shoveling too!?" His cheeks flared red as he spoke the question, and those in the group that knew him well looked at him as if he were an oddity--which he was.

But, they set to work anyway, digging at the snow while the magic-user worked as best he could.

KORBIN
And round about his home the glory
That blushed and bloomed,
Wessex did well to let the others of her group go first. Someone among her helpers had worked in the Palace before and knew a less used route that avoided much of the rubble. Finding the staircase without incident, it groaned and creaked under the Wraith's tentative feet, but proved solid enough for everyone to pass.
Once on the second floor, she would find that not much remained of the section that the Infirmary had been in. A dusty corridor lay before them, the roof torn open above; the path was littered with debris and many of the doors and walls to other rooms were torn open. But the entrance to the destination is right up ahead and the path to it looks safe enough.

Chulane's idea of setting up an assembly line is good, but unfortunately the rocks are too heavy to be moved by one person alone. It takes all of their strength just to clear a narrow path, and in the punishing cold, frostbite begins to set in on fingers and toes and any exposed flesh. Two of his helpers has to give up and heads back for shelter and warmth. But there is still a task to be done, and now the door to the store room is visible.

Noah's group would find that the snow lies deep, and has packed densely in the time since paths were last shoveled. All the helpers work as effectively as they can, and though they are all stiff and cold by the time they reach the lumber storage. Trying the door, Noah will find it frozen shut, shifting slightly but reluctant to open.

Meanwhile, Korbin lead his group around the bottom floors of the Palace. Finding that only a third of the structure is untouched, he and the others begin the work of sealing up rooms and hallways. The intent is to block off any section of the building that is open to the elements, and insulate the walls as best they can. There is a lot of work to do however, and it will take up all his time.

----------

Second round! (sorry for the wait)

Wessex reaches the second floor, and needs to get across the hallway to the Infirmary. The floor looks safe, but is it really?

Chulane's group struggles with clearing the rubble, and frostbite is becoming a problem. Two people have left his group, but now the door is visible!

Noah is good at shoveling snow, but it takes longer than anyone would like, and by the time they reach the lumber storage, everyone is stiff and cold. The door won't open, what do you do?

CHULANE

It was a good plan, if a bit more difficult than initially anticipated to execute. As the biting cold bore down on the crew, Chuy sent some away to be healed. "You've done well, go get healed, and get warm." He said to the two who were the worst affected. "And everyone else, huddle in." He encouraged them all to stand close in a circle, backs to the outside, so that their breath could warm the small space they created with their position, and rest their weary bodies. After some time to rest and recuperate, he clapped his gloved hands together before them.

"We've made it to the store room now -  whoever feels ready again, follow me and let's see if we can get it open." With a nod he led two of the helpers down the path they had created, pleased that it was now so much easier to traverse, though still wary that the structural integrity of their surrounds was questionable at best. Once they got to the door, he clasped his hand on the handle and tried to turn it, leaning into the door with his shoulder to give a gentle shove, should it stick. "Stand back," he told the two who followed, hoping he wasn't leading himself, or them, into more danger.

--

ooc: Chuy huddles with the remaining helpers to rest and get warm again. Then he leads 2 of them to the store room door and tries to open it.

She watches as they all pass up the stairs, keeping an eye out for extreme shivering, twisted ankles, and other cold-weather dangers.

When the group is on the second floor, Wessex now takes the lead, willing to let any instabilities in the building take her rather than the volunteers. Going slowly, she directs them to spread out behind her and avoid clumping about, to look around and under everything, but to be careful about it. Once they’re done with this area, they’re instructed to explore the rooms with the doors that have been blown off their hinges, while she heads for the destination itself. Making her way slowly down the corridor, if she is able to reach it without incident, she’ll push the door open and take stock of the situation in the Infirmary.

Noah

The cold was unforgiving, the ice taking no prisoners here. But the people were hardy and strong, and they pressed on. Noah could feel his fingers starting to go numb as they worked and he looked around at the people gathered at his side. Some had started to shiver, and he could hear mumbles of complaints from a few. Despite it, they kept digging and shifting and moving the snow that piled up in front of the wood shed door. The people of Halo knew how important it was to have fuel to burn -- there were people gathered here, trying desperately to get to this firewood, who were no strangers to breaking down pieces of their own homes to refuel and stoke their fire.

Finally they broke through the snow barrier. "Is anyone too cold?" He asked, blue eyes examining some of those around them. Even though he knew the answer, they all just started back at him. Very well, then. Noah approached the door and grabbed at the handle with numb fingers. It was frozen stuck, shut. He grunted as he pulled. Another man about his size and height came to help, but they couldn't budge it. "Do you think we could break the hinges?" Noah asked his small group, but he intended the question to be a statement. His shrine visit commanded otherwise. Grumbling with their own questions, Noah pressed them forward. He took the metal edge of his shovel and slammed it at the hinges, hoping to crack the ice that encased them. A few other men followed suite while the rest of his group took turns huddling together, continuing to shovel, and trying to break down the door.

Noah and his group try to break down the door.

KORBIN
And round about his home the glory
That blushed and bloomed,
Chulane's group had some trouble getting the door open. It took the combined efforts of everyone in the diminished team to finally budge it, and once inside it became clear why. The roof of the storage room within had collapsed, and half of the massive rooms beyond were buried beneath rubble. It would take more than a few minutes of work to get that cleared out, and the cold was wearing on the helpers. In the sections that were still intact, Chulane would find some of the stores that had been brought in for the Grounders. Bags of flour and sacks of potatoes, crates of dried fruit and other odds and ends. There was a whole smoked and cured deer also. But they only have time for one run, and there are only four people left to carry the food. What to do?

On the upper floor, Wessex would find that the floor was highly unstable. It crumbled under her feet in places, and any attempts to enter the broken rooms made the whole section groan and sway ominously. But vigilance and experience served her well, and she was able to navigate her team safely to what remained of the infirmary.
It wasn't much. Half of the room was just gone, broken open and exposed to the elements. But miraculously, the section that remained, closest to the doors, seemed almost perfectly intact. Save for a dusting of snow on the surfaces there were shelves full of teas and salves, creates of bandage and even a kit with surgery tools tucked in under a table. But though the treasure was in sight, the room was not safe, and looked ready to crumble away at the slightest disturbance.

Noah's suggestion of breaking the hinges worked like a charm. With a creak and a groan the metal broke, and soon they were able to enter the shed. Debris from the falling Palace had done serious damage to one section of the building, and though there were both chopped and sawn timber lying in stacks before them, the sleds and pulleys used to transport it were half buried under heavy beams. Noah has a choice to make; carry as much as the team could by hand, or risk extracting the sled? Touching the wrong pile might bring the whole roof down.

Meanwhile, Korbin's group found that the remaining towers were dangerously unsteady. Rather than risking someone's life and the remaining structure, he made the decision to simply seal them all off. With some luck, there would be a handful of good sized rooms available for use until the season turned. Better than nothing; at least the Warden wouldn't have to work out of the Kraai's beer cellar.

-----------------
Third round!

Wessex made it safely to the infirmary. Half of the room is gone and the rest looks like it'll crumble at any moment, but there is a trove of supplies just sitting there. Will she risk it?

Chulane finds that much of the food storage has collapsed, and while some may still be salvaged, his team is short handed. Can he find a way to bring it all back before the rest of his group succumb to the cold, and if not, which food will he choose to save?

Noah got the door open and finds a wealth of lumber, but all the sleds and pulleys are half buried under rubble and the roof looks unsafe. Will he risk digging them out, or bring back only what they can all carry?

Noah

Their effort is worth it. Noah feels the hinges give way under a strike of his shovel, and he lifts the tool momentarily in triumph. Some members of his team move the heavy door away so that they can get a good view of whats inside. The state of the storage room was not what the Olson had hoped, but the wood piled high was hope enough. A young man, the same magic user that had used his water magic to help move snow, tried rushing forward only to have Noah grab him by the scruff of his cloak. "Can't you see?" He asked, pointing to the ceiling and the way it looked like it wanted to crumble at any second. "Can you please be careful?" He asks, looking to each member of his posse.

Letting go of the boy, Noah himself steps forward tentatively. Observant blue eyes scan the room, the potential dangers lifting and collecting in his mind. He grumbled some, under his breath and hardly even words, but turned to the group of men standing closest to him. "Can you guys rig something up enough that I can pull?" He asked them. He was starting to get better at crafting his own questions rather than let his commands sound less authoritative.

The sleighs that they had used to bring in the wood pulled by draft ponies were broken, but if they could get them just out of the storage room Noah knew he would be able to pull one to a safer, more usable area in his reindeer form. The idea of trying to get to the sleighs and sleds, however, made Noah's stomach turn. It looked like the room might collapse at any moment. "How about some ropes? Did anyone bring any ropes?" Luckily, there was a woman who did bring rope. For a moment, relief flooded Noah's chest. "Can you guys grab some of the wood from the storage room? Can we try to rig up something we could pull using the ropes?" He took a step forwards towards the room as he spoke, examining.

They would need to be careful. Noah reach forward and grabbed a few pieces of smaller wood, listening for any sign that the walls might crumple.
