If that bulletin was any kind of accurate, there were many things to prepare for in the coming weeks. They needed to stay warm, needed to gather food... She was certainly going to be checking with her family, to find out where she could help prepare them for whatever this longnight was. It sounded dangerous (piquing her curiousity painfully), and she wanted to know that she and everyone she loved would survive the unfamiliar event... but today?

Today Ashe felt like every muscle was coiled too tightly, something in her snapping and crackling dangerously. Her magic emulated her mood, sparks hissing and bouncing all over her body in her dark mood. Today was not a day for visits, for talking to anyone. Maybe tomorrow would be better, maybe tomorrow she could look at her family and take their disappointment without snarling... but today the wolf ruled, and she was hungry.

Breath clouded in front of the wolf's jaws as her paws stepped silently on blanket of snow that had settled over the forest floor. Full of tension, she raised her nose to the air, ears swiveling and tracking the sounds of the forest that resounded in the silence of the snowfall. Her nose quivvered as she tasted a trace of what they sought: deer.

The wolf had caught the scent of them on a frozen wind as she watched the sunrise that morning, working herself back to some kind of humanity after she suffered through another few hours of sleep. She and Kalt couldn't miss the chance at large game to get them through the longnight, and it was the perfect opportunity for her to work out some... aggression. Training was well and good, but there was more she needed.

Ashe flicked an ear and turned golden eyes up at the man by her side, watching him carefully. She nudged her nose into his thigh and turned her head to the east, ears perked forward sharply. She let out a soft and quiet bark before she lifted her nose and sniffed at the passing wind. This way, she seemed to say, and her lip twitched with anticipation.

Kalt walked as silently as he could in the snow beside the large wolf. His bow was gripped in his left hand, full quiver on his right hip. With both of their skills, hunting would be a breeze. The man glanced at Ashetta with her nudging of his leg, and he quirked a brow, breath clouding in front of his face.

He trusted her nose, would have been foolish not to. Easily interpreting her animalistic signals, Kalt nodded to her once and started moving again in the direction that she indicated.

He narrowed his eyes as they walked, taking an arrow and nocking it on his bow. “I’ll shoot one in the chest, then you take it down.” His voice was hushed so he didn’t scare off the deer that they were tracking, but Ashe’s wolf hearing would have no problem problem with it. “Try not to tear it up too much, ‘kay? We can use the pelt.”

He flashed her a smirk. Ashe was an excellent huntress in both her wolf form and her human form, but this was the first time he was hunting with the wolf. While he certainly found an element of exhilaration in the activity, he wasn’t sure just how many instincts were overtaken by the wolf. Since he wasn’t an attuned, that wasn’t really something he paid much attention to previously. Her bloodlust as a woman was strong when tempted, but he wondered briefly if the wolf’s was stronger.

The moment Kalt confirmed he understood her, she let out a huff of air and began carefully padding through the trees once more. She kept her head low, nostrils flaring gently as she kept herself on the scent, ears flicking to and fro as she took in every sound of the woodlands. She felt the tell-tale rumbling in her belly as she tasted the scent of the deer, mouth watering behind closed jaws.

Ashe flicked her golden eyes up at the man at her side, and a part of her drifted back from the ravenous wolf, processing his words. Hearing his voice was grounding, having to listen to people speak to her as a wolf kept some part of her original soul aware. She let out a soft huff and a flick of her ear in acknowledgement, keeping her eyes pinned ahead of them. The herd was still a modest distance - the scent had been stale when she first picked it up, and it had taken time to find the crisp trail. She followed it confidently now, never breaking her determined stride. Hungry.

They needed to save the meat. Deepfrost. Longnight. Now was not the time to eat. She would hunt, and she would leave it. She would hunt, and she would leave it.

She cut off the low growl that was just rumbling to life in her chest, pulling in a deep and full breath - close. They were close. The sun was starting to sink down the other side of the sky, but thankfully there was still plenty of light to see by. At least... to her. It was enough light for Kalt, wasn't it? The sun hadn't started setting just yet.

Her pawsteps slowed and lightened finally - she had kept up their brisk pace for some time, focus narrowed entirely on that scent trail. She came to a stop, turning her head to look up at Kalt with sharp and eager eyes. Close, they're close. She turned her head forward with a sharp breath that clouded before her, then turned her eyes back up to the man beside her with a soft whine.

He followed Ashe’s tracking, relying on her rather than his own tracking skills. Wolf trumps hunter, no matter how skilled the hunter may be.

Her steps slowed and finally stopped, Kalt adjusting his grip on his bow and giving her a sharp nod when she brought golden eyes to peer up at him. He understood what she was saying, so the assassin started forward again, his steps as quiet as physically possible in the snow.

Ashetta had been right; they really were close. Within moments, they came into sight of the deer she had smelled. There was a small herd of them, a young male with four females, one that appeared pregnant from where he stood. He saw the buck raise its head and lift its nose into the air, so he pursed his lips, lowering his hand to tell Ashe to stay low to the ground. Whether she was a true blooded wolf or not, she would still smell like one to the deer.

Kalt would take a few calculated and slow steps forward, lowering himself to the ground and drawing the bowstring, his eyes expertly calculating the distance and wind speed for as accurate a shot he could get.

The arrow was loosed, one of the females letting out a cry as it lodged into her chest. That was Ashe’s signal to move. The other deer ran off, while the injured doe stumbled after, struggling to breath with an arrow in her lung.

Ashe followed after Kalt with silent pawsteps. The moment the deer came into view, the wolf lowered herself close to the ground and went as still as stone. Within moments, she vanished entirely. Her mouth watered as the scent overpowered near everything else, her pupils dilating as she flicked her gaze between each deer. Hungry. She glanced at Kalt as he took aim, and her muscles coiled in preparation as she followed the tip of his arrow to the target. Briefly she wondered why this was the plan, why he didn't go for the eye or another immediate death.

The moment she heard the slight groan of his bowstring, she banished the thought and locked her eyes on the doe in his sights. He knew she needed this, that was why.

She sensed the release of his breath just as he loosed his arrow. There was a thud of it striking the doe, her bleat, the clamor of the herd fleeing -

The wolf shot forward in a streak of jet black and flying snow, materializing from nothing. Her paws devoured the earth as feral eyes zeroed in on the doe, the scent of blood overpowering everything. She knew that a wolf alone would be taking a steep risk in attempting to take down a deer. One mortally wounded, however? Ashe's jaws parted, lips pulled back as she made a powerful leap forward at the doe, snapping her jaws at her legs. She was weak, bleeding - blood that splattered her nose, hot, fresh - and she would fall, trip, something to give Ashe her chance. Hungry. She snarled and snapped her jaws at the stumbling deer's back leg.

She growled with satisfaction when she felt her teeth clamp down over the slender leg, blood dribbling into her mouth with the snap of bones between her jaws. She was forced to release when the doe threw her other hoof at Ashe's head. She barked and didn't hesitate as her prey went down, descending upon it with wild and hungry eyes. With a leap forward, she snapped her teeth down just below the deer's jaws - locked around her windpipe, tearing through flesh as she thrashed against the wolf's bite. Blood, hot and thick, poured through her teeth and over her tongue, drawing growls from deep in her chest. She bit down harder, her jaws, neck, and shoulders aching as she fought to hold on. Hungry. Mine.

The doe's fighting became weak struggling. Vibrant red stained the snow and steamed, and Ashe was still growling as she held the doe to the ground by her throat. The deer stopped moving, but her jugular was still pulsing under Ashe's teeth, and she was going to rip into the prey's throat, end the struggle - there were thicker hindquarters to sink her teeth into, entire mouthfuls waiting for her -

Feral eyes snapped up at the sound of footsteps approaching, and her growl jumped in volume as she crouched lower to her kill. Mine.

Kalt ran forward as soon as Ashetta darted after the doe with an arrow in its side. There was a momentary grin on his face when she moved as if materializing out of thin air, but he focused on the hunt, on the kill. Not so strangely, it wasn’t exactly a shock that it wasn’t quite the same thrill as taking a human life, but a deer will do just fine for Ashe for now.

As he ran forward, slinging his bow over his bow and drawing his hunting knife just in case Ashe’s wolf hadn’t given the deer a quick end. He was fine with her taking her sadistic time with a person. Hells, he did it quite often and enjoyed every moment, but animals were different. There was a certain innocence that made him feel guilty or almost helpless when he saw an animal suffering, so he never drew it out.

He slowed his footsteps when he drew closer, and Ashe lowered towards the doe with a louder snarl. To think she had been territorial as a person...

”Cut the shit,” he said, flashing a half smirk to the large wolf. She might’ve had much more heightened instincts as a wolf, but it was still Ashe and her gods damned shenanigans. He wasn’t afraid to take her on to stop her from ripping the deer apart. That kill was going to get them through likely the whole week of Longnight if they paced themselves. He wasn’t going to let her squander that because the wolf got too greedy. Maybe if she ate better in general she wouldn’t be so snarly.

The wolf could smell nothing beyond the gamey scent of the deer and the hot scent of blood. It trickled down her throat, and her eyes dilated as her jaws loosened and snapped back down, her teeth sinking into a new and softer place of flesh and fur. Her golden eyes were locked on the approaching man and her hackles bristled. Mine, she was saying with her ears perked sharply forward, and she snarled as she prepared to jerk her jaws and rip into -

Her snarl cut off when Kalt spoke to her, but the black wolf remained still and tense over her kill. Her eyes narrowed on him in a decidedly human expression, and she considered him in silence for a heartbeat. Two. Three. Finally she conceded with a snarling growl, releasing the doe from her teeth and shoving back from it. Her tongue drew over blood-drenched jaws as she moved around the side of the deer with a bounce, barking low against the smell, the taste. The wolf's appetite was so much harder to sate than the woman's.

Her mouth watered as she continued cleaning the blood from her mouth, eyes never leaving him as she padded at a slow trot around the back of him. She kept her eyes on the deer, on the bright red blood that steamed on the snow, but she forced herself to look up at Kalt. She let out a low whine and nipped her teeth at his sleeve as she came to stand at his heel, turning her head up to him with her shoulder shoving against his leg.

They needed to gut the kill and bring it home - drain it, skin it, divide it and preserve it. Leaving it outside would keep it frozen, but the risk of it being snatched by hungry mouths - human or animal - would be too high. Maybe his magic would do something for keeping the meat good until the longnight.. She glanced at the doe, her belly rumbling before she made herself turn and look at Kalt and nip her teeth at his pant leg with a sharp and impatient growl.
