Cleaning. Jace hated cleaning. But it had to be done, or else Beatrix would never shut up about it. Sisters were such a pain.

He had posted a notice in hopes to rally some of the remaining Academy members - or anyone really - to help. The last thing he wanted to do was try and set this place to rights all on his own. It wasn't horrendous really, but after LongNight when the Academy had house far more people than it had been constructed to, it needed a good pick up. Trash had been left in random places, furniture had been moved all over the place, makeshift sleeping areas had been set up randomly - basically things needed to be sorted and put back in order.

So Jace waited in the entrance hall, leaning against a support beam, hands in his pockets. At the very least, Beatrix had better show up given all her griping. But he wasn't holding his breath, instead hoping that the curiosity peaked by his sudden arrival would bring people in to 'help'.

Beatrix
Beatrix wouldn’t shut up if it didn’t get cleaned up—and she wouldn’t shut up if it was done wrong. So of course, she showed up; she wasn’t that much of a pompous asshole, to gripe about cleaning and then bail on it. Though she had, almost.

She came down from the library, rather than through the entrance, and moved to sneak up behind her brother. Sometimes, she could be playful. She reached up to smack at his shoulder, lightly, as she settled beside him.

“This place is a mess, you’re gonna do more than just “supervise”, right?” She made air-quotes with her fingers around the word “supervise”.

Happiness is not an ideal of reason but of imagination
The Academy had been a boon to them during Longnight, a haven for a large percentage of the Citadel (and the temporary refugees from the Grounds) to gather and endure the week of deadly cold and darkness. Chulane had done what he could, being a member of the council, to ensure that it was left in reasonable condition - but then, there had been a lot of people there, and there was only so much he could do against a tide of people looking forward to escaping the confines of the place for freedom and sunlight.

Jace Launceleyn and his sister shared a lot of traits. Entitlement seemed to be one of them, though Chuy was careful to guard his judgement until he had spent more time with them, learned about them, and perhaps observed them directly contributing (or detracting?) to the region.

So he showed up, some part of him seeking a task to busy him, to distract from the anxiety and worry plaguing him over Kia's adventure with Wessex, another part of him wanting to be involved in the improvement of the region as a whole, and another part again wanting to know more of these Launceleyns.

"Hello," he offered with a nod and a small, polite smile to the man, another given to Beatrix as well, as he approached the entrance to the Academy he had so recently (and yet it felt so long ago with everything that had transpired since) vacated. "Need a hand?"

Weak knees from the level, I’m sick from the treble, I’m your type of metal
Despite the impassioned words Hester had shared at the council meeting, there was enough faith in the warden, in her ruling, for the girl to step beyond her first thought, and extend a hand out in help. She wasn't exactly going to be bright and cheery about it, but Hester was going to make an attempt. To understand, to be a part of the apparently new and improved Academy.

Besides, she had been one of the bodies seeking refuge in it's walls, moving tables and shelves to suit her needs, to find a place to sleep, to have conversations and practice space and whatever else she'd needed to get through the week of darkness. One of many doing the same, but here to help clean some of her mess now.

The petulant frown on her face changes immediately when she sees Chulane though, glad she won't be alone with the creepy, chilly stranger, the babe turned man, and his sister, changed the same. "Chuy! She cries in a far too excited chirp, bumping her shoulder against him before turning her eyes to the new benefactor of the academy. "Here to help." The words come out much stiffer than her greeting had, though they match the smile she offers.

Don't shout at me like I'm across the room when I'm right here, when you're right this time
Honestly, he’s been trying to avoid nearly everything lately, but now that he doesn’t have to be cooped up at home nor in the workshop to abide by his parents wishes… Well, he finds himself here – following the few bodies he recognizes within the confines of the Arcane Academy. Chulane, first of all, always having been kind to him and gentle where he’d struggled with his speech.

And then there was Hester, far too nice to him, offering far more than he ever thought was possible from someone he’d essentially grown up with, having seen his flaws firsthand. But he comes ready to work, with nothing else on his mind, slipping in behind the other two and moving to stand beside Hester. His green gaze slips over Jace and Beatrix, a small nod given, before he focuses on Chuy with a soft smile and a far warmer one offered to Hester.

Hettie.” He says in greeting with a small dip of his head, before shifting the pack he’d brought with tools to help fix anything that was starting to fall apart like he had during LongNight.

Jace spared his sister a sidelong glance, face expressionless though she might catch the glimpse of irritation in his gaze. As everyone else entered he turned his attention away, nodding to them as the crossed the threshold in greeting. Acknowledgement was the important part after all, not the words per se. He only recognized the one woman who had been at the council meeting - and he was surprised she had come given how against his reclaimation of the Academy she was. Perhaps she would be proven wrong in her snap judgment of him.

Or maybe not. He didn't really care in all honesty.

"Thank you for coming to help." he said once it seemed no one else would join. His voice was soft, almost as if it were underused, not accustomed to pushing more than a word or two from his lips. "The library needs to be put back in order - everything has been shoved against the walls. Throughout the Academy there is trash and other discarded items that need to be removed though..." he paused, tapping a crate on the floor in front of him. "I brought this to put personal items in just in case their owners come to reclaim them. The kitchen needs a good scrub down and resorted. I'll be working on picking up the practice area." he said. The area had been left covered in makeshift sleeping spaces and all the equipment had been moved around.

"I don't care how you divide yourselfs - but with all of us we can hopefully get this done quickly." he said, pausing to see if anyone had any questions before heading up to the top floor training arena.

Task 1: Put the furniture in the library back were it goes.
Task 2: Pick up the trash throughout the Academy and put and 'lost' items in the crate.
Task 3: Clean the kitchen on the 2nd floor.
Task 4: Pick up and reset the training arena. (Jace)

Happiness is not an ideal of reason but of imagination
"Hess!" he said with evident pleasure as the girl appeared by his side, a grin curving his lips as he returned the shoulder bump. And then Glas appeared as well - Chuy was unaware of the boy's recent loss, smiled broadly to him too, and murmured a soft "Hey Glas, good to see you," to the boy.

Then he was pulled to focus on the task - no, tasks - at hand. He listened, nodding in understanding, before glancing to the gathered and piping up first, since no-one seemed keen to.

"I'll take the library," he said, a little bit because he had spent so much time there over the Longnight, finding solace in something as familiar as books in an otherwise foreign land. He then promptly headed to the grand (well, every room in here was grand, really) room that contained books upon books, mostly about magic, but other topics that interested him too.

Upon arriving there he began the task he'd selected, first focussing on books that hadn't been returned to their correct shelves, instead piled on a table. Once they were out of the way, he would begin moving chairs that were haphazardly scattered across the room to one corner, to give him more space to then move around tables and the like in the freed up area.

--

Chuy takes the library, and beings by putting any books not returned to their shelves back, then moving chairs aside so he can begin moving tables back into place.

"Hess?" Hester immediately repeated, her face alive with a bright delight at the new nickname. A delight that only continued as Glas arrived as well. Perhaps this wouldn't be the frustrating slog she'd been expecting. Immediately, she hooked her arm with the craftsman, drawing him close against her side.

The delight dimmed as the new administrator of the Arcane Academy started speaking, outlining the tasks required of them. At least he had the good grace (or maybe it was a lack of social graces?) to get straight to the point. And Hester's decision is made easily. "We'll take care of the garbage and lost items." She chirps, dragging Glas into a hallway to begin a methodical check and clean up of the various rooms of the academy.

And chat, of course. Sure, it might be faster to divide and conquer, but where was the fun in that? Hester managed to pretend to be serious for only a moment, finding a left behind sleeping bag to use as a garbage bag and getting to work picking through things. "Have you given any more thought to exploring?" Came the immediate question, curious dark eyes aimed more at the other than on her work.

Beatrix
Beatrix headed up the stairs, to the kitchen. She was briefly pleased to be working alone; she didn't like how most of these people looked at them, spoke to them... how they acted towards them. It was perhaps a misconception, to take how someone smiled or how their words sounded as an insult, but she did.

She claimed a sponge, and began to scrub away at the kitchen counters, and the dishes they had been left. At least this was peaceful work; she might suck at cooking, but cleaning was her jam. Tidying, organizing, all of that, she enjoyed.

Beatrix has gone to the kitchens, and begun scrubbing the countertops.

He doesn’t expect to get the exuberant response to his arrival as Hester gives him, but it sparks some sort of normalcy within him – a sort of ‘we’re glad you’re here’ that has a small smile creeping on his face, sidling up close to her side. Her arm hooks into his, tugging him into her side, and he follows willingly – keeping his arm hooked with hers.

The tasks, however, Glas notices are ones that he can be well suited to – especially at the one that Hester suggests. And he offers Jace a swift nod before he’s slipping away with her (more like being dragged away with her) to accomplish it. He grabs a basket for himself stashed away and left behind that he can put lost items into.

He starts to pick up the garbage and drop it into the bag that Hester’s picked, a small soft laugh slipping from him at the realization it’s a sleeping bag, before her words reach him. And he notices just how easy Hester is to talk to, that he doesn’t have to fear anything by doing so, so he can meet her eyes, offer what little bit of himself he’s terrified to offer to anyone else. Meeting her gaze, scanning her freckled face, he offers a wider smile. “Y-yeah. I want t-to.” He agrees, having thought it over with nothing else to tie him here aside from work.

Glas goes with Hester to pick up trash and lost items!

Jace was glad to see everyone getting right to work. No grumbling, no protests, just a quick divide and conquer. He headed up to the top floor himself, surveying all that needed doing. First he set to gathering all the piles of bedding, folding it up and placing it by the door. Considering how much grief he had gotten over taking over this place, everyone else had left it in quite a state. At least he didn't have anyone chatting at him. For that he was thankful.

Chulane would find placing the books back an easy enough task, but if he paid attention he might see signs that perhaps he wasn't alone. A few feathers here, a few wet prints there - the signs of a Ningo that somehow managed to infiltrate the building would be clear as day. Hopefully he would notice them before too long.

Hester and Glas would face their own conundrums as they scoured the building. Eventually the two would happen upon snow that had been tracked in by someone along the line. But this was no ordinary snow - oh no - this was Memory Snow, stubbornly stuck to the floor in perfect boot prints along the halls.

Beatrix might have been glad that she didn't have to deal with odd stares, but the mess in the kitchen was...well...really bad. You see, when things aren't washed in a timely manner, the food waste remaining tends to mold - and this case was no different. It was noxious, gloopy, in-some-places-fuzzy. Making sure none of it remained - smell or particles - would prove a difficult task indeed.

Task 1: Put the furniture in the library back were it goes. (Chulane)
Task 2: Pick up the trash throughout the Academy and put and 'lost' items in the crate. (Hester and Glas)
Task 3: Clean the kitchen on the 2nd floor. (Beatrix)
Task 4: Pick up and reset the training arena. (Jace)

Uh-oh, looks like things are getting a little tricky (or hairy, if you're in the kitchen)! No post order!

Don't shout at me like I'm across the room when I'm right here, when you're right this time
Work seems relatively easy, wandering aimlessly through the Academy, picking up whatever he could see, deducing internally whether it was something that belonged to someone or simply trash. But it couldn’t be so easy, of course, not when he goes to pick up another item to toss into one of the basket he carries of lost items, turning to spot a boot of snow that seems like it’s almost crawling to get away.

He pauses, verdant gaze slipping toward Hester with blonde brows raised. “Hey Hett-t-tie... Look.” He breathes, moving over toward the memory snow and pushing at it with a finger or two, waiting for it to remain with the new imprint. Of course, there really wasn’t much that he had on him to try and get it out, to lift it up without it taking some other shape.

So he grabs his chisel from his tool belt, setting the basket aside, working to pry the memory snow up and make it into a snowball of sorts, hoping it might keep its shape long enough for him to toss it outside – moving to the next one.

Glas tries to make the memory snow into snowballs so they can toss them out later!

Happiness is not an ideal of reason but of imagination
The feathers he spotted without much surprise - he assumed the various cushions he was moving around were probably stuffed using ningo feathers, as most things in Halo were, and guessed that after a whole Longnight of visitors might be shedding a few through general wear and tear.

So he kept packing away books, and began shifting the chairs to the side.

That was when he noticed the footprints, and heard the tell-tale sign of scratching, and even the odd, very soft crrrk croon. Fucking. Ningos. It would seem his idea to capitalise on ningos as an agricultural resource had sent a message out to the world to ensure he had as much experience with the odd bird as possible.

He chuckled to himself despite it all, shifting furniture to reveal the bird cooped up behind a few chairs, a nest comprised of a torn-up book beneath him. "Hmm," he hummed softly, before deciding to make a quick journey to the kitchens to grab a crate that could contain the bird.

"Got a ningo camping out in the library," he said by way of explanation to Beatrix as he grabbed the empty crate, and promptly returned to the library, waving at Hester and Glas on his way past, amused at the prospect of what he might look like to them. Upon returning to the library, he set the crate up near the ningo, before grabbing a broom, to gently coax it into the crate.

Beatrix
Beatrix arched a brow as she heard Chuy, snorting. "Have fun," she called, eyeing the disgusting mess that was the kitchen. She should've given the kitchen to her brother, his water magic would've done much more in this situation than her disintigration.

She grumbled and reached for a stiffer sponge, scrubbing harder on some mold, gloopyness. She wasn't touching that with her bare hands, if she could help it. It looked absolutely disgusting. Scrubbing as hard as she could, putting her weight into it, she worked her way down the sides of the counters and sink.

Beatrix is scrubbing as hard as she can on the counters and the sink.
