REMI
the alchemist
What good are hands
if there's nothing that they hold
It would likely be one of the last things he did as Governor. Responsibility and leadership hadn't given Remi the type of motivation or focus that he thought it would. And, having enough respect for Torchline to want more for her than that, he would give the title to someone else.

But not during a crisis.

So word is sent around that all are to convene on the beaches to discuss the illness many have, and to offer a temporary cure for it in the meanwhile. With the barrels of water brought back from the Climb, there is more than enough to give the infected a one-week reprieve; hopefully, two, if Ronin's math is right. Standing comfortably with his back to the ocean, the alchemist nods to those who arrive, gesturing for him to sit or stand as they wish. When the majority have arrived and the meeting-time has passed, Remi speaks:

"For those of us who are sick...enjoy your week of sanity." Remi looks to Sunjata with a grin, before his eyes dart to the other Torchers who had also been infected. "It hasn't been long enough to know if drinking the water after the week will give you another week, so...keep that in mind and make arrangements if you need to." To be tied down in bed, as in his case.

"The water if from Frey's Breath, a hot springs deep underground in the Climb. Morgan, Warden of Halo has allowed us to trek across the tundra to enter. It's dangerous and cold, so if you do decide to go to replenish your water, dress and prepare accordingly. While we were there we found..." Reaching into a pocket, Remi produces a dazzling lily with deep veins of turquoise running through. "It makes me think of when Vi brought us roses to plant to help with the blight, though these came with no instructions...but...perhaps keep an eye out for them, as they don't appear to be all that common."

With a glance toward Samuel and Nate, the alchemist pulls in a breath and offers them a tight-lipped smile. "We have no way of knowing what the water will do to you..if anything at all. But...we also don't know that it won't be harmful." He says in a low and solemn voice, looking to Vervain and Phoebe as their healers, for more insight.

Falling silent, Remi opens up the floor for anyone else with new information to share it.

Knowledge gained from coming to this meeting:

1. Water from Frey's Breath provides a temporary cure, though it isn't clear if doubling doses, or drinking it forever will stave off the infection
2. Lillies sprouted in the Hot Springs, seemingly at random. We don't know what they do
3. We don't know what the effects of the water are on the ascended. a run
And what good are hearts
if you bury them all alone?
Code blatently stolen from queen of codes, Sky!
Speaks with a thick Italian accent.
Force and magic can be used against Remi without permission.

everything has its wonders
Ronin needs no healing, but he does want to see his friends feeling better. And honestly, after carrying the weight of Torchline and the worry of Remi’s state of health, the Star is all too content to allow his husband to take the lead as Governor one last time. It’s only a small matter of reputation that keeps him from being draped all over the Lullaby as he makes his announcements, and even then, once the meeting has begun in earnest, he slinks up beside Remi.

”At least we can buy them some time,” he murmurs, slipping an arm around the other man’s waist and gazing down at the lily in his hands. ”I wonder what they are for,” he muses, having no more of an answer now as he did when they first came upon the mysterious flowers.

Melita
Eating fire is your ambition
to swallow the flame down
For once, there’s a beacon of hope.

Melita didn’t arrive for herself, but for information, and to help whomever – especially Sunjata, and Nate, assuming they’d both be obnoxious about the entire event, given their symptoms. No one could go on much longer like this, either the sick or the tending, riddled and impacted by the constant onslaught of caretaking and striving to alleviate the worst of it all. So she came on the heels of rampaging through, eyes darting, ready to help and assist wherever anyone might need it, and listening.

A week.

They’d have a week, if they were lucky.

Her questions, her observations, poured through, gaze going to Ronin, to Remi, to those already journeying through Halo. “I’d be willing to go and explore more, and see what I can find.” More of the flowers? More of anything else? Would Vai be able to do something with them, if they were treated like herbs? Did they matter in the slightest?

Out of the shadows, the morning is breaking
And all is new, all is new
At this point, Sam would have taken anything.

While he was usually some kind of neurotic, the season so far had been an unending freefall of paranoia and mania, his mood and thoughts bouncing about in his head worse than they ever had before, the physical urges only serving to worsen what was happening within. When Sam had heard a meeting was convening about a potential cure, he was there.

Upon hearing it came from the Old Gods...well, he did pause, the constant worry doing a good job of filling him in on the potential dangers. Ultimately though, he decided he had to try it. Perhaps they had decided on an act of mercy for once, or had simply forgotten to make it poisonous to the Ascended. With the Voice failing to provide a cure, he didn't have much of a choice.

Waiting for the meeting itself to be over he stood by the barrels, waiting for a chance to drink and fighting back the urge to run, his throat closing up and his feet wanting to move at the thought of the water in his mouth. Sheer determination held him there, his hands shaking as he watch Remi speak.

just take your time wherever you go
Saiden lurked at the edges of the crowd, hands in his pockets. Although he'd been part of the expedition to the Climb, he left the explaining and the warning to Remi and Ronin. The cook just watched those who gathered, an easy smile on his lips.

When he heard Melita's words, though, he sidled over to her. Speaking in a whisper, he told her, "If you need a guide, I know the way. We'd probably have to clear it with Jack first." Nodding at the red head, the Hali started whistling a tune as he walked away.

When he saw another, very different redhead lurking near the water, Saiden chuckled. Making his way over to Samuel, the cook arched an eyebrow. "What're you waiting for, a gilded invitation?" Taking the top off a barrel, he dipped a cup in and held it out for the other man.

SUNJATA
the flood
all the drinkin' and the druggin' and the black and the red
the achy skin and all the sweat in my bed
There’s a meeting called. And all Sunjata remembers is that he’s got a job in Torchline, whether or not it’s an important one, but he remembers that he knows Remi, lived next door before the house burned down, had talked about things… That meant it was important, right? Yes. He’s sticking with that.

There’s a scar on his palm he vaguely remembers getting, a ring in the shape of a crescent moon sat upon his finger, but he can’t fully remember how either. What he does know, is that he’s sick, he’s been through a lot, and with his arm draped around Nate, he catches Remi’s gaze, however briefly, no memory of their encounter before.

And yes, it’s water, but he’s been patched for nearly half a season, lost his mind just about as long, and it takes a lot of effort to fight down the shift within him that screams at him to avoid it before he can actually scoop a bit of the water up into a cup, casting a glance toward Nate and refusing to look at Sam. Interlocking plates partially shift onto his shoulders and throat, hand reaching for Nate’s free one, before he curses quietly under his breath and downs the cup.

Oh, how wrong we were to think That immortality meant never dying
Really, the only reason Nate is going anywhere is because his arm is entwined with Sunjata's, because he has no other choice. They can't be parted now, can't be parted ever. Sure, sometimes the thought, the memory slips from his mind, but every time Nate turns to look at his fian- his husband, he remembers all over again, feels a giddy rush flood through him. Everywhere they're pressed together, warmth flows between them, no blood in Nate to flush him red, but his face still shiny, iridescent with fluid sweat.

Just like the memory of his marriage, Nate's attention wavers, drifting in and out of the words announced. He gets a few things, healing water, pretty flowers, and then Remi is looking at him, smiling. A toothy smile is offered back to the governor, the hand not entwined with Sunjata's lifting, waving an eager greeting, and quite effectively shooing away the pesky warning offered out to him, to Sam.

A soft grunt leaves Nate as he's pulled closer, wary eye on the barrel of water. But he offers an encouragin smile to Sunjata, nods his head. It's healing water, and the attuned has been sick for far too long. If he didn't know better, Nate owuld almsot swear he's starting to feel under the weather. And just to be supportive, the bubble of panic in his throat is swallowed down, and he takes his own cup of water. "You're going to be fine." He promises, swallowing it down just after the other man and squeezing his hand tight.

Go on Sam. Drink.

As soon as the liquid goes down Nate's throat—you guessed it—he involuntarily throws it back up, dry heaving until every last bit of moisture is gone. Dizzy for a moment, should he do an internal scan he'll find that his body has absolutely rejected the water he's tried to drink.

SUNJATA
the flood
all the drinkin' and the druggin' and the black and the red
the achy skin and all the sweat in my bed
Is he going to be fine? It feels like needles stinging down his throat. He wants to inhale, to spit it back up at first, and then…? Then everything melds away, a dry pain and a throbbing headache melds away, a grunt of a sound leaving him as Nate squeezes his hand and he squeezes back. He swallows the rest of it down, leaning forward with the hand with the cup braced against the barrel – right when he realizes Nate’s throwing it back up.

But he’s better now, at least temporarily, and he drops the cup to wrap his arms around Nate, pulling him in, realizing that something was still wrong, and sighs heavily. “Ek het jou.” He murmurs, trying to make sure Nate wasn’t going to have even more problems. He doesn’t relish in his health just yet, not as his gaze lifts to Remi and Ronin, some strange cross between thankfulness and sorrow hidden within the steel.

The fever breaks for Sunjata, but Nate still feels warm, still feels too hot, and he can’t quite relish in the sensation of feeling better than he has since the season’s changed, not when Nate’s still sick.

At least one of them was sane for the time being.

Out of the shadows, the morning is breaking
And all is new, all is new
Sam blinked a couple of times at Saiden, then at the cup held out towards him. "Oh, I...I thought we weren't...it wasn't time or...something." He mumbled quietly, reaching out to take it, unsure if he was allowed. As the moment passed no one yelled at him to let it go and in the corner of his eye, he could seen Sunjata and Nate beginning to drink (but didn't look long enough to see quite how Nate reacted).

His hand shook as he held the water, looking down at it igniting the irrational fear that he held within. Closing his eyes and trying to calm himself, other hand forming a fist beside himself, he raised it to his lips and with the willpower needed to move a thousand armies, took a small sip from the cup.

Sam's body seems to accept the liquid he drinks...precisely until it doesn't. Static rings and blares in his ears, static shock exploding from his eardrums, severely damaging them.

For 1 OOC week Sam will not be able to hear anything.

At first, despite his nerves, it seemed that the water did not burn nor hurt; it settled on his tongue and tasted much like anything else. Sam managed to relax for precisely one second before the racket began, his head full of bangs and static and his hand reflexively dropping the cup as he bent over double, clutching his ears and yelling.

He'd known it was poison, why had he believed them when they said it was a cure! Were he less panicked, the world less empty of sound he would have begun to point fingers and accuse those around him of malice...as it was, Sam only shook and held his head, trying to move but finding himself convinced if he did something worse might occur.

Oh, how wrong we were to think That immortality meant never dying
Nate doesn’t quite realize he’s throwing up until he’s almost finished, muscle memory tipping him forwards just though to avoid getting anything on himself, the hands clasped in Sunjata’s pulling away so he can hold the other mans shoulder instead. Usually, he’s fine after one, good to stand up and keep going, but this just keeps coming, until there’s nothing left at all except a taste in his mouth that he spits to try and get rid of.

Rising again, Nate barely has a chance to sway before arms are around him, pulling him close. He sniffles, then huffs out a somehow not breathless laugh. ”Guess that means no water for meee.” It comes out a singsong, carefree trill, though the fact that he hasn’t been able to keep a drop in him is a touch concerning. Hands cling tighter to Sunjata, Nate tucking his head in.

At least he’s done better than Sam. It’s the second time in not that long that he’s seen the other ascended on the ground, in less than ideal circumstances.

And things had started out so very well.

With a grin toward Melita, the girl he'd once thought of as rather naive and timid having blossomed in his mind into a worthy companion, he nods. "We'll likely have to go back for more given how many sick we have. We'd be glad to have you along." He says warmly, nodding his head toward Saiden's caution about speaking with Jack first. Far be it for Remi to interrupt Ark politics, he turns eyes filled with caution towards Nate and Samuel.

And watches as it all goes wrong.

Jata is at Nate's side, but Sam seems alone here. There are miles to go before the two men might call themselves proper friends again, but as Torchline's Governor and as a man trying not to be so complete an asshole as he's been, Remi rushes to the ascended's side.

"Sam?" He whispers, hands reaching out for the map-makers shoulders to try and steady him.
