reality whispers a different tune underwater
Might have been better had Olavi stayed as he was. With his shark senses he might have been able to notice what was coming. Sunjata too, really. Oh whale. Guess you get to deal with the conseaquences of playing it safe.

The creature that comes is nearly 15 feet long, and almost entirely translucent. With a body made of a glass-like material, this particular type of shark is not particularly strong, however it is incredibly fast and ruthless. Seaking out only the weakest victims, it is relentless and devious in battle.

From the darkness it shoots toward Nerissa, weakest of those present. It slams its body against hers before darting away with shocking speed.

Who knew I'd make her so blue
Once more, Nerissa agreeing is extremely reassuring. While Delta is clearly younger and far more inexperienced, she does feel as though she has learned at least a bit for how to make decisions based on her... curses... AND EXPLORING!

Any opportunity to be optimistic was good, especially seeing as things could go wrong extremely quickly.

And oh- they absolutely did.

In a flash, Nerissa is struck right in front of Delta. Her eyes widen and she lurchas back momentarily before staring forward at the injured mermaid. "Nerissa-" Her words are choked out and quickly silenced, realizing she has no idea what attacked her or why.

Reaching into her bag, Delta pulls out a blade and holds it with a slightly shaky hand. Sunjata- if you have room can you shift or something? Fuck- do you want me to get Nerissa away from here? Delta knew she wasn't much of a fighter and it was absolutely clear. She turned to Sunjata for guidance, worried that Nerissa was too incapacitated to have much input.

I'll tell you what it means to me
It's nothing but lobotomy
If their whole journey stays this calm, this simple, perhaps they'll be back in friendly waters with news before the sunsets. Of course though, no sooner does that thought cross her mind than disaster strikes.

An almost invisible assailant barrels towards her, leaving no time to move out of the way of its assault, no time to even curl up and try to minimize the damage. Pain blooms across her body, the mer clenching her teeth so hard they creak, if only to avoid crying out with the pain.

A sharp guttural curse leaves Nerissa as she's pushed back through the water, the last (and first) words to actually leave her lips as her form shrinks, into the smaller, nimbler body of a squid. She jets towards Olavi, automatically seeking the protection of her lover, her mantle curling up and around her body as she goes, revealing rows upon rows of wicked-looking spikes.

Nerissa shifts into a squid and curls up close to Olavi, revealing her inner cloak while she does.

the sea speaks a little more honestly
It happens quickly, and Nerissa is rocked by something in the water that he can’t quite see. They’re too close to the cliffs to shift into his whale shift again, and so he simply chooses to dart a bit forward into the water, blocking Nerissa as she moves back toward Olavi, Sunjata aiming to be a shield of sorts while he reaches out for something around them, something he can use as a shield.

He settles on using his compelling to reach out to six sea turtles, hoping to compel them into a shield of sorts that circle the group, keeping them close. Behind me, Delta. He rumbles, the smaller they were as a group, the easier this would be to try and shield them from whatever the creature was, hoping that he might be able to tap into his senses and see if he can’t tell what the creature is that attacks them.

Sunjata tries to compel six sea turtles to become a ring around the group so that they might have some shielding. He also tries to reach out and see if he can’t sense what attacked them.

First thing they do
is to substitute pleasure for pain
Olavi usually had a keen sense of what was happening around them, what could be a potential source of danger from any angle; maybe it was the unfamiliarity with the waters they were in, but he did not see the clear shark coming before it was already there, heading towards Nerissa. The second it touched her, a loud and enraged yell left him and he swiped out at the creature, but it was already gone.

Dearest, are you alright? He asked as Nerissa went to be behind him; she would feel through their bond the anger and protective passion in Olavi as he shifted back to his own marine form, making sure to keep the squid behind his body facing the ocean. Teeth bared and eyes search left to right, he wanted to be sure that anything coming would face him and never touch her.

As Nerissa swirls and shrinks the shark is able to fixate on a new target, and truthfully the one it should have had all along (my baaaad).

Olavi's defence is instant, while Sunjata's is not. The sea turtles begin to come toward him, though it isn't as though there is an abundance of them at the ready. Only three arrive before the shark attacks again, this time aiming straight for Delta. Lightning fast, faster than nearly any other creature of this size you've seen (hard as it might be to get a bead on the shark), it lashes out at the mermaid holding her blade. Her blood sings into the water as it snaps at her waist.

The remainder of Sunjata's turtles arrive, and below and to the outside of the circle, Sunjata will feel the mind of the creature as it coils and calculates. Bloodthirsty and primitive, now that it has a taste for Delta, it won't stop until one of them is dead.

Who knew I'd make her so blue
Eyes widen and a gasp leaves her lips. Before she can move an inch towards Sunjata, she is attacked. It is sharp, painful, and jolting. Maybe she's lucky she didn't scream or maybe it was bad. I'm- I'm bleeding- Fear, terror, regret.... so many emotions as her eyes wandered down to her waist to see blood floating away into the water around her. A hand moves to try and block it, but already it's too late. Delta is aware of how sharks and other creatures hunt-

And she's terrified.

Quickly, she swims to try and hide behind Sunjata, her body trembling. I don't want to die- what do I do? She looked around them as fast as she could, ready to try and swipe if the monster came any closer to her.

Delta swims up to hide behind Sunjata!

She also tries to place a hand to cover her wound and she is prepared to swipe at the monster if needed this time.

As well... I am using her seasonal feat!

Torchline: Torchline has taught you to survive her weather and her terrain. Once per PQ/PQ+/KQ/Drop, you can 'shrug off' half the damage from ONE non-lethal attack. (In order to use this ability, you must put a clear note in the bottom of your post immediately following the attack you want to 'shrug off').

Whatever is attacking them is not content with just one of them bleeding, even while Nerissa regroups, grabs a steady hold of herself again, Delta is attacked, blood clouding the water around her. Predictably, the princess panics, something they don’t have the luxury of time to indulge in right now.

Stay calm. Nerissa’s silent words are a whip crack, leaving no room for disobedience or panic. In an instant, she has returned to her chimeric natural shape and reached out with her magic, intending on encasing the bleeding princess in a sphere of ice, room enough for her to move on the inside. A final though has her tugging at the outside edge of her makeshift protection, freezing spike to the outside. If it didn’t discourage the beast completely, at least it would hurt it when it tried again to attack.

She swivels in place where she floats above Olavi, eyes casting around for a hint, a suggestion of the nearly invisible horror hunting them. Shout if you see it.

Nerissa shifts back to her full shape and uses her mastered water magic to freeze a spiky shell around Delta.

She specifically tries to keep an eye out for the creature and any tells of its movement

the sea speaks a little more honestly
There is one thing, about being a man with so many predators under his skin, that the scent and sudden blossoming of blood again has him narrowing in on it. Muscles feather in his jaw as Delta reacts to getting hit, the turtles slow to reach them, silently cursing himself for not thinking quicker – though how could he know? He’s about to respond to Delta when Nerissa’s words float through his mind, and Sunjata’s shifting so that he’s in front of the injured Mers.

I can feel it. He relays, clenching his jaw again, the predator within him raging again at the idea of the primitive calculation, bloodthirstiness that transfers to those shifts of his. He’s not sure if his orca shift will fit, but he supposes it’s worth a shot, slipping through the water and in front of his makeshift shield of sea turtles. He reaches out to the creature directly for the first time, encouraging it to stand down, before shifting his arms into that of his dragon, claws for hands, armored plates slinking up his tattooed arms, ready to try and follow the thought of the creature so he might strike when it shows again.

Sunjata tries to reach out to the creature directly and tries to compel it to stand down, partially shifting his hands to claws of his dragon shift and prepares to strike at it should it come toward him.

Olavi watched with a grimace as Delta was hurt, but did not move from where he was protecting Nerissa; he had a job, one purpose, and he would not let anything distract him from that. Luckily, it seemed that their new enemy was not purely focused on his love and he could relax a little, focus on an attack instead of only defence.

Swimming forwards a couple of feet, he figured he'd try to actually speak the shark's language, since they shared a species. Baring his teeth, Olavi swished his tail from side to side and made it clear that he was not here to be bullied or messed with, and neither were his associates. Being a large shark himself, he hoped that the message would get across.

That Delta is able to heal herself does not change her status as weakest link in this floundering chian, nor the blood already in the water around her. Rocketing toward the mermaid, the shark is suddenly partially-impaled by one of the ice-spikes created by Nerissa. There is no blood issuing from the creature, but there is a crack, which makes it slightly easier to see.

Suddenly, the shark appears unsure. It moves just enough to continue to breathing, eyeing Sunjata. The mind of the shark is quite unintelligent, but the Flood's command is clear enough. And though it goes against its every instinct, the shark does indeed begin to retreat.

Had enough? Or shall we continue along the cliffs?

A voice tells her to calm down and she nods to Nerissa, trying to stay calm... which was honestly almost impossible but Delta certainly tried. Whether it actually worked, it didn’t seem to matter as the other mermaid was moving forward with her actions. Ice surrounded her and Delta tried to remain as still as possible.

And then the beast came back. Lunging at her and being pierced by the ice that jutted out. Delta’s eyes widened as she watched not a single droplet of blood leave the creature. What the fuck...? it was quiet, but heard by everyone around her. What was this creature?

By the time she was able to really move again, the shark was gone. Their combined efforts had thankfully led to it leaving, but all was still not well. Delta was still bleeding, her blood clear through the water.

Im sorry, but I- I want to go home... I’m bleeding and I’m scared what my blood may attract next. Meanwhile, she was trying to place her hands on the cuts, hoping to stop the bleeding somewhat.

Delta asks to leave while trying to use her hands to stop the bleeding.

A savage grin spreads across Nerissa’s face as the creature strikes again, cracking itself open against her spikes. There is no blood, but there doesn’t need to be for the mer to see that she has wounded whatever this beast is. It seems to hesitate before swimming away completely, Nerissa warming the water around Delta to release her from her frozen shell, and to hear her worries.

We can’t turn back so soon. There is more than a hint of insistence in Nerissa’s voice, her pale eyes locked on the Princess with an unwavering intensity. Look at how far we’ve come. Discovery is just around the next bend, and don’t you want to be the one to see it first?

Turning to the others and expecting they would follow where she led, Nerissa made a show of consideration. How about a deal? If we don’t find anything ahead, we’ll all return home. It was more than fair in the smugglers kind, so much so that she doesn’t bother waiting for a response, turning and swimming on ahead again. She is shifted slightly more than usual, rubbery skin spreading above the wound in her side, maybe it didn’t help that much, but it made her feel a touch better.

Nerissa tries to convince Delta to keep moving, and offers a deal

His muscles tense, body prepared to strike out should the command fail. And the creature comes back, lashing out in the attempts to get Delta, only to crack against the ice spikes. Brows furrow ever so slightly, before Sunjata’s focusing on trying to talk down the creature. It’s a battle, but Sunjata loosens a breath as soon as he can feel that the creature has retreated, and he lets go of the sea turtles to shift back in the water and peer back at those gathered.

It’s gone. He informs them, of the shark, before nodding with Nerissa as Delta claims she wishes to go home. Perhaps that’s the best choice, the rest of them continuing on and Sunjata can do his best to ensure that perhaps they can prevent more creatures from lashing out at them. I’m good to continue. He rumbles toward her, slipping through the water with his guard partially up as he traverses through the water with their group.

Sunjata lets go of the sea turtles and agrees to continue, though his guard remains up.
