Another request, one that he imagines Safrin might appreciate even if he hasn’t seen her since he’d started getting sick. And if they manage to get it done soon enough then perhaps Flowerbirth can be a time of celebration rather than protection and storms, of destruction and preparation. But he’s never quite asked her for anything so publicly, taking notes from the time he’d shown with Remi to request the Canals, Sunjata offers much of the same. No lit candles this time, but those that wish to arrive would find that he’s collected a variety of hued flowers for makeshift bouquets for Safrin with a mix of tropical flowers in the shades of pink, purples, and blues, nearly swallowed by the twilight above, the starts twinkling to life.

Whether or not anyone grabbed some on their way up, well, Sunjata couldn’t make them, but he does sit there at the base of the lighthouse waiting for those to gather that chose to. It’s idle waiting, worth it if it meant that they could work to protect all of Torchline. And once everyone had gathered, he flashes them all as easy of a smile as he can, hoping they add all the help and support that Sunjata finds they’ll likely need, if the last quest from his goddess were any indication.

Thanks for showing. Much like what we did last Deepfrost to make the canals, I plan to ask Safrin to help protect most of Torchline from the monsoons.” He doesn’t think it’s necessary to mention that he should be the one to do the talking, and so he leaves it out under some sort of mutual understanding, hopefully.

Will move this on in a couple of days (11/13) <3 Feel free to have your characters arrive and take the flowers/leave the flowers as offerings or what not!

a lion-hearted girl
Repeated efforts and cycles, protection required and needed through the monsoon season, and tributes to Safrin, left her following the lines towards the lighthouse. Melita wouldn’t come empty-handed, not for the starry goddess, but her heart was both infused with light and apprehension – the former for the herald, the latter for the Governor. So instead of sprawling herself along the front, with so many of the already gathered, the youth and her gourd hung around the back. Her hands grasped hold of some of the flowers gathered, implored and conveyed by the pink, purple, and blue hues, along with her favored rocks – pale and distinct, outlined like moons and stars, and several other shells meant to reflect the patterns of the sky.

She spread them along her hands, her palms, her fingers, open and wide, on display for the goddess to snag, behold, and have, bowing her head in silent reverie and prayer, incapable of glancing Sunjata’s way.

even the darkest night

Vai arrives with an armful of white roses - not from Torchline, no, but from a visit to the Greatwood - and she nestles them carefully against the base of the Aumakua with the rest of the offerings. She has never met Safrin, and so this is quite the occasion indeed, and the witch smiles gently to Sunjata and Melita in greeting. Inclining her head in a gesture of respect, she steps back a few feet and gazes up at the pale stone of the lighthouse.

"It would definitely be nice, not to have another washout this year," she remarks softly to the Flood, glancing around the rest of the colourful flowers and inhaling softly, letting herself relax into the atmosphere. It's peaceful out here; then again it also reminds her of living with Remi and Ronin, with Sunjata and Nate for neighbours. That's less peaceful, but just as pleasant a memory.

He watches as people approach, a variety of those that lived in Haulani, a few sprinkled out closer to the cliffs, those that work in Kaiholo. He watches as they lay out the flowers along the base, his gaze slipping to Melita as she hangs around the back — not having it be the time or place for another conversation he can only imagine will blow up again. So he turns his attention to Vai, a small half smirk forming on his face. “It would, wouldn’t it?

But when all is said and done and everyone’s hanging back again, it’s his cue to start he supposes. So into the lighthouse he goes, trekking the familiar stairwell until he reaches the shrine at the top, his tattoos she had gifted him with flickering and twinkling in the reflection of the candles still lit at the top.

Bowing his head, he begins, sure that those that wished to see her were still hanging around the back. “Safrin,” his voice is an easy rumble, an edge of hope laced throughout. “The canals are beautiful, and they have opened up so much of Torchline to the merfolk and added your brilliance of the stars to guide us through the night. It may be asking for a lot, but, with the monsoons coming in a couple of seasons I thought it might be worth seeing if you could help us?

He pauses, his gaze flickering staring at the shrine, his mind forming his thoughts into words, something he’s never been particularly good at. “This past year we had spent much of the season preparing for their arrival and still had homes destroyed and people hurt. If we all come together to prepare for it like we had done with the canals, perhaps you could help us with protection from the monsoons throughout Haulani and the Port every monsoon season.” Another piece of Safrin to appreciate, worship, and thank for everything she’s done for them.

sweet dreams till sunbeams find you, sweet dreams that leave all worries behind you
Much as the goddess might otherwise lavish Sunjata with her attention, that this is a public gathering will see her slightly more restrained.

Slightly, you understand.

Is it just happenstance that Sunjata's husband is not present? Or is that intentional? You're lucky you're handsome, Governor. Safrin doesn't normally take kindly to mind games.

Appearing on the window sill, her gaze bright and her body starlit, Safrin gazes upon those who have decided to accompany the governor to make his request.

"Sounds like a request for Frey." She notes, crossing one leg over the other as she fixes Sunjata with a penetrating stare. "But if you're flexible, I'm sure we can come to some sort of arrangement?" Glancing over her shoulder toward the tides, as if they all might see a storm brewing on the horizon, she turns back with an expectant stare. "Did you have something specific in mind?"

It is happenstance that Nate isn’t here – between wanting to get a head start on things for the next couple of seasons before the monsoons hit and Nate working on something for the Voice, it felt right to simply host it now, to focus his attention on the Lady of the Stars, one whom he hasn’t seen in far too long.

And if Sunjata cared more for what others thought of him, it might have been an awkward encounter with the way Safrin arrives, the way she sits on the windowsill, the innuendos placed therein. But it isn’t, not as he offers her an easy smile – a characteristically roguish one that screams Sunjata time and time again. “Perhaps.” He says, in response to Frey. But he knows that she isn’t Frey’s biggest fan, and he knows that he isn’t their biggest fan either. He’s Safrin’s. She’d made him what he is, after all.

She’s who he’d come to time and time again.

As for being flexible? Well, he can’t help the quiet breath of a sound that leaves his throat, almost similar to a laugh but not quite fully given. A step closer to her, the flowers held in his hands delicately much like when he’d arrived with the necklace for her the last time they’d met. “I’m always flexible for you.” And he was. He can’t think of a time where he hasn’t been. He reaches out to either hand her the bouquet or to set it beside her on the windowsill. “Perhaps a windbreaker of a sort, one that can be activated when the winds begin?” A brief pause as he considers his words, tongue dashing along his lower lip as he idly thinks how best to put what he has in mind. “Like a barrier part of the way over the ocean that maybe dampens the winds that come in from there so it’s no different from a typical windy day by the time it reaches Haulani and the Port? ” He could ask for more, but already this feels like a lot. Really, he appreciates whatever it is she has in mind, if she chose to help them.

sweet dreams till sunbeams find you, sweet dreams that leave all worries behind you
Reaching out a hand to accept the offered flowers, Safrin gives Sunjata private wink for his efforts, before schooling her face into a more neutral expression for the rest of those gathered. "A barrier over the ocean...to stop the winds.." She repeats, his request sounding more and more like the sort of thing he really should have asked Frey for. But, that he came to her anyway is admirable and appreciated.

"A barrier of stars, perhaps. Just after the world comes out of a week-long darkness, the star-wall can emerge from the sea to protect Torchline from the worst of the winds." Safrin nods. "However you will need to find ways around the changes to the ecosystem this will cause. The monsoon wind helps pollinate the surrounding jungle and also strikes a delicate balance with the natural erosion process of the beaches. We'll also need a few anchors to be made from stone and metal with which to affix the wall of stars in the ocean."

Tasks. There is no time limit. There are currently 19 active Torchers. This means 10 unique characters have to participate (SCs do not count - they can participate, but they don't count toward completing tasks). Characters can participate more than once. Sunjata, Vervain, Nate and Zephyr must participate in at least 1 thread. Sunjata must participate in 2.

1. A PQ of 6 Torchers trying to predict what impact lack of winds will have on the natural erosion process of the beaches, and then come up with and implement a plan for how best to deal with its impact. (at least 4 rounds)

2. A thread of 3 torchers doing what they can to assist with natural wind-based pollination and seed-dispersal efforts (given that the monsoon winds normally do this). (at least 4 posts each)

3. A thread gathering rocks collected from Apopo or the Rainbow Road at midnight beneath the stars, a thread of making star-shaped anchors, and a thread placing these items at the bottom of the ocean. (at least 3 posts per member, per post)

* 50% of those with Torchline as their citizenship must participate in at least 1 thread, contributing at least 3 posts. All members of government must participate. Leaders must participate twice.

She accepts the flowers and Sunjata takes a step back, listening attentively as she repeats his request. And he doesn’t realize he should have asked Frey for it – choosing to come to Safrin because he was hers. But he watches, eyes taking her in as she carries that neutral expression as she goes to explain what the plan might be. A barrier of starlight, something that has him internally brimming with the wonder of it all, the starry tattoos she’s bestowed on him shifting slightly in her presence.

The tasks are laid out and Sunjata dips his head to her, before casting a glance around to all the other Torchers gathered, before his steel gaze slips back to her with an easy, bright smile. “We will get it done.” He assures her, mentally making the tasks before he can write them down and get to orchestrating it. “Thank you Safrin. Again.” He rumbles with another dip of his head.

He'll have to make a point to see her again. Alone.
