Darkness has swallowed the day. All is calm, or at least as calm as it ever is, out on the ocean.

She is a vast thing, the Arclight ocean. Does she cover the entirety of the continent? Or does she break and give way to cousins that make up the other waters of the world? Thoughts to ponder later, perhaps. For now, your mind is filled with the galactic colours of the waterways of the sky being spilled. A meteor shower unlike anything in recent memory plummets toward the ocean, easily visible from the beaches of Torchline and the cliffs of Stormbreak.

Down and down they fall, harmlessly burning and offering those who are awake the opportunity to perhaps make a wish. But for those who look closely, they will see among the burning and beautiful debris is a starwhale. He falls with enough energy to send massive waves racing outward.

But yours isn't the only attention his fall has garnered.

Three ghostwhales have been rallied by this galactic presence, and hungrily they swim toward the fallen creature.

Gideon
the priest
Give your heart and soul to charity
'Cause the rest of you
Torchline was not one of his favourite places after the awful display of ignorance he'd seen last time he was in town, but there were still souls to save from the Voice regardless of his personal preferences; Gideon had compassed over in the early morning, hoping to mark out the location of the shrine in his minds eye one last time and talk to a couple of potential newcomers.

Of course, one couldn't go to Torchline without a walk on the beach before you went home. He knew it could be rough around these areas, so he'd brought the only weapon he really knew how to use, a dagger; the handle intricately carved with scenes from the war between the Old and New Gods; the same he had ended a life with not so long ago. He usually didn't aim to kill, but if another Ascended approached...well.

There'd been a fishing boat that had called by as he'd gone past, asking for some help recovering their equipment. Gideon normally would have ignored the request, but looking up to the sky, the odd flashes of light and the waves...something about the scene felt enticing, and he agreed. Rolling up his sleeves, he got onto the boat and got ready to help, no idea what he was about to see once they got up close enough.

Staring wordlessly at first, clinging to the railing of the boat so he would not fall due to the shaking waves, Gideon looked to see if there was anyone else other than the fishermen and himself looking at this fallen creature and the vultures descending upon it; was he meant to do something about it?

Jack is a cautious man. And yet, with the curse(?) shrouding him, fearlessness is a thing he is beginning to enjoy. And when a meteor shower that's more than appears, he can't help but want to take a look. These sorts of things are the stuff of legend for sailors, and might yet garner great treasures if they're lucky. And so the Ark sets sail in the dead of night, cutting through the water towards the commotion.

It is only when they get close that he realises there is danger mingled in with the wonder, the captain hissing out a curse. "Always fucking ghostwhales," he growls under his breath. Giving orders and leaving Seven to prowl around the prow of the ship, he hands over the wheel that he might get a better look at things.

Jack arrives on the Ark! The ship is as dark as it can be, and is currently sailing around the perimeter of where the ghost whales approach the starwhale.

He brings... well. The Ark, the crew, and his sear cat companion.

we rise and we fall and we break
By extension, Aurelia is present on the Ark as well. Shuffling boots, the sound of something hitting the waves, and don't forget Jack's lovely voice, broke through her slumber. Suppose it's possible she could've been with Milo tonight but, she isn't, so... voila!

She rises to the occasion, blinking away whatever sleepiness is left in her system and rushing to prepare for what the fuck is going on above deck. When she materializes beside Jack, strapped in leather gauntlets and armed with her knives, there's a wide-eyed frown on her face. She's even adorning the manta jewel around her neck, tied bound by a wide leather brace of sorts (because I still don't know what to call it).

Questions galore zip around in her head but, she knows better than to ask at this point.

What's happening?

Why?

And most importantly, What the fuck?

She stands beside Jack, taking everything in all at once, the state of the sky, the state of the sea, and the state of... "What. is. that!?" She mutters as her eyes look out toward the fallen whale, waves tossing from the aura it emits.

Then, not expecting much of an answer, she turns to Jack for direction. Her expression is neutral, voice rising to be heard but, her tone is impassive, "Well, Captain? What's your grand plan?" Her hand rests on the hilt of her hunter's knife and her booted feet remain poised for action. Beneath her cool-ish exterior she is preparing for whatever happens next, her blood is pumping, and adrenaline is already starting to kick in. She's ready, she's kinda scared, kinda excited, but she's ready for a taste of some Caido action.

Aurelia's on the Ark with Jack and, if he gives orders, will accomplish them to the best of her ability (save for jumping into the whale-infested ocean).

She's bringing:

A set of (6) throwing daggers strapped strategically on her person.
Her hunter's knife, sheathed on her belt.
Leather gauntlets.
The manta crystal necklace thing...
and we make our mistakes

Watching the meteor shower from Torchline, Arialla had seen something that she didn't think was normal, though she didn't know yet what a starwhale was. At first, she'd reacted by shrugging and thinking about how the gods moved in mysterious ways that she would never know -- until she remembered that a god had given her a way to know more. Then she rushed to the cliff's edge and flung herself off as an eagle, soaring towards the meteor shower on oceanic updrafts.

By the time she arrived on the scene, most of the debris had already fallen to the water, giving her a clear path through the skies -- and a clear view of the wounded creature. Arialla's beak parted in wonder. Oh, beautiful; oh, tragic. It clearly wasn't supposed to be here, and though she'd never seen a ghost whale before, Arialla could read hunt in the movements of the other three beasts she watched from above.

There were other people around, though, at least two boats that Arialla had spotted so far. Could they do something to save the starwhale? Should they? For now Arialla simply hung in the air above the whales, trying to get a better look. Was the starwhale injured, dying, a lost cause, or could it still be helped?

------------

Arialla is in golden eagle form, evaluating the situation with her eagle eyes, with a particular focus on the condition of the starwhale.

She brings nothing particularly useful, since she's shifted, but she has her eagle and bottlenosed dolphin shifts.

Neos
Look out 'cause here I come
And I'm marching on to the beat I drum
I GOT THE GREEN LIGHT TO JOIN WITH NEOS, SO LET'S DO THIS.

This...this was one of the craziest stunts he's done in a long, long time, including and not limited to the recent trip to the Hollowed Grounds to make baubles with an assload of surprisingly-friendly Ascended. Not the craziest, but pretty up there on that ever-increasing list of crazy shit he's done in his life. Instead, the craziest stunt was something even he still didn't exactly believe he pulled off, even though he actually did it.

Round shield on left arm, rope wrapped several times around his waist like a belt, spear in the other and several things of jerky on hand in a small pouch on his actual belt incase he found himself stranded at sea for a bit, Neos had managed to smuggle himself into the Ark...largely on a few promises here and there with a couple of the sailors that seemed too willing to help him out, including selling extra booze to them on the next visit to the inn he's been staying at on and off. While he never understood the appeal, alcohol did seem to be an effective trading tool, no matter the world.

He had his hair tied back with the resulting ponytail hidden under the neck of his black turtleneck sweater, allowing him to blend in more with the dark corners of the ship with the all-black attire. He snuck into a spot on the side of the ship, out of the view of the captain who definitely didn't know he was here to try to see better what the fall from the sky he saw earlier was, that prompted this very-impromptu sneak onto the Ark. He bit his tongue as he saw something he's seen before, but much, much large this time, a starwhale being surrounded by three whale-like creatures he hadn't seen before himself.

"By Arceus, I hope I don't finally die here," he muttered under his breath out of habit, a line he said when he truly felt he was about to do something to be added to the 'crazy shit' list in his head. He didn't want to insult the gods of this world by praying to the wrong one for aid, so he went for what he hoped was the less-insulting option for now.

What did Neos manage to grab before he came here, excluding his hat and slightly-glowing necklace...
  • A spear
    A round shield
    Plenty of rope
A small bag of jerky to possibly use as bait in an emergency
He also has his lion shift, but that probably won't happen unless some extra strength is needed on the ship itself. (And that would be a time to 'Oh, shit'.)

Also, he's on the Ark, so he can't exactly do anything until the captain says to get closer....
I'm not scared to be seen
I make no apologies
This is me

A priest in a fishing boat, a pirate and a bounty hunter on a pirate ship, and an eagle.

Oh and a stowaway.
How fun.

Arialla is the first to arrive, her golden wings carrying her swiftly across the sea. Though it's dark, she'll be able to make out the massive shapes of three ghostwhales below, beginning to crowd around the floundering starwhale. Second to arrive, the Ark streaks toward where the starwhale has fallen. The water around her hull glows brightly with star shimmer. Familiar with the Ark, the ghostwhales take immediate note of the ship as it looms nearer, and for the moment they begin to dive down as if put off by the ship's presence...Only Arialla will be able to see that this isn't the case. She'll see that the ghostwhales are quite clearly targeting the ship. Pity there's no way to communicate that.

And then there's Gideon in his fishing boat. Tossed about by the waves, it will take him another round before he's able to properly reach the thick of things.

You will all feel a strange warble of anxiety in your bones. The light from the starwhale is calming, but its thrashing and general state of panic has tinged its magic, adding an unhelpful intensity to the situation.

The ghostwhales seem to be gone, and the starwhale is panicing! What do you do?

Uh oh. Arialla felt an instant of relief as the ghost whales moved away from the injured star-beast -- immediately replaced by a stab of fear as she realized they'd targeted the ship instead. She might not be sure whether they could or should help the starwhale, but she knew she couldn't leave a ship of other people as sitting ducks, even if doing so might put her in danger.

Swooping down, the eagle seemed about to collide with the deck for a moment before transforming into a young woman who dropped the last few inches and landed on her feet. Nice. Even under the circumstances, Arialla took a moment to smile to herself: she might have practiced that dramatic landing.

Then she refocused, shouting across the ship: "The ghost whales are coming for your ship!"

Her message delivered, she started to look for the highest point on the deck, the best place for her to take off if she transformed into her eagle form again. She'd come to warn the sailors, but she didn't exactly want to get into the thick of things if it came to a battle -- she'd rather take to the sky again.

Edit: Oops, forgot my ooc section.

Arialla lands on the Ark, warns the sailors about the ghost whales, and prepares to transform back into an eagle.

we rise and we fall and we break
On top of the anxiousness, the excitement, there's something else that she can feel as they near the whales. This sudden disquiet didn't feel like one of her own mind's manifestions and, as her eyes swept back towards the starlit whale, she wondered who she was sensing the emotions of...

Aurelia and Jack don't have long to discuss strategies or lack thereof when suddenly a shadow flickers in behind them on the deck. She turns around just in time to see an eagle change into a person, and she's automatically on the defensive what with everything going on. She even takes a squared step forward, gritting her teeth and ready to defend against whatever assault this could be - because Aurelia's a living weapon, let's be real.

But her gaze, her stance, her grip on her knife, it all wavers as the shout across the ship meets her ears. She glances at Jack briefly, to catch his gaze, a silent 'shit, here we go'. "I got the cannons, you worry about the rest!" She's already gone by the time her statement is finished, off to do as she says she will.

"You! Bird-lady! Think you can get back into the air and show us where the whales are going? Be much appreciated!" The words are said quickly as she passes the other woman, the stranger that's randomly spurred on to help them. Might as well see it through, whoever she is (Arialla). With another set of eyes on the whales, and with Jack directing the ship into a {hopefully} better position (or whatever he plans on doing to help), they might stand a better chance.

She tosses out orders to the other crew-mates, if any can be spared to help her man the cannons and prepare them for firing on each side of the ship. Thanks to Melita's care, they're well-stocked and ready to go.

"You there!" She directs the man she's never seen before, but has no time to wonder if he's actually a crewmate or not, (that's you Neos ) "Get moving! You're in charge of the cannons on this side. Make sure they're loaded," she turns away to go to the opposite side of the ship, where some crewmates are already loading the cannons. She adds over her shoulder, "If you see a whale, blow its ass up!"

Not waiting to see if the Attuned girl is good for what's been asked of her, Aurelia tries to catch sight of the ghost whales herself. She scans the water for their shadows or fins, splashing waves, anything determinate. Should she see them, she'll give the order to any helping crewmates to fire the cannons in the direction of the whales. She'll join in on this endeavor, as well, of course. If she doesn't catch sight of them, or if they hit the ship, she'll fire to see if that will deter or scatter them - or generally stir them up.

Aurelia quickly asks Arialla to shift back and track the ghost whales, and gives orders to Neos ready the cannons on the opposite side of the ship, and enlists the help of NPC crewmates to achieve this quickly and load multiple cannons.

If she's able to see any of the ghost whales, she'll give the order to the crew so they can all aim and fire the cannons at the whales. (or just her/Neos, I'm not certain on the logistics of the cannons and how involved the NPC crew can get)

If she doesn't see the whales, or if they already start hitting the ship, she'll still fire the cannons.

Either way, cannons go BOOM... hopefully.

Jack opens his mouth and Aurelia's voice comes out. He has no time to issue his own orders, whatever they might be (they were absolutely not if you see a whale, blow its ass up, for the record), and he's killed the girl six times over in his head by the time she asks someone else to man the cannons on the opposite side of the ship. Jack's gaze flicks over the man, then catches, and he stops dead.

Stowaway.

Jack will deal with him later. For now he's seen the ghost whales disappear, and if he wasn't convinced already that it means bad news, the bird woman confirms it. So it's time for a bit of "luck" on the part of the weather, and Jack turns his attention to the sails. Surreptitiously, he conjures a gale to fill them, to carry them faster around the perimeter and towards the starwhale. Why?

Maybe the ghost whales will want to eat that instead of the ship, that's why.

Jack uses Air Manipulation to fill the sails, trying to direct the ship towards the starwhale in the hope that the ghost whales will want to eat that instead of the Ark.

Air manipulation: Can create and control the air. Must be within a 30ft radius.

Neos
Look out 'cause here I come
And I'm marching on to the beat I drum
He managed to stop himself before making a very-unhuman sound with his voice upon being shouted at in surprise, which had him turning his head rapidly towards the one that shouted at him.

It's only having pretended to be other people for so long that stops him from asking something along the lines of 'You want me to do what?' "R-right," he shouted back in response instead. However, glancing at the cannons, he moved towards one that purposely wasn't the closest one to him, to give him a chance to see how the sailors were loading it. Then, he did the best he could to load up the one he moved to and began to aim after putting the shield and spear down, using his foot to keep it in place...

It may be prudent to deter them instead of actually striking them, fire between the starwhale and...those things.

Neos frowned at the other voice native to his head before silently admitted that the other him might be right before aiming to try to keep the spookywhales away from the ship instead by shooting at the odd whales...well, at least the one he could see for now, focusing on the parts of the bodies that were closest to to shoo them away.

Gideon
the priest
Give your heart and soul to charity
'Cause the rest of you
It seemed that himself and his new crew weren't the only ones to come across the odd ocean scene; Gideon held onto the railing, bracing himself as he watched a new ship appear, one he'd seen before at the Torchline docks, and an eagle above that he believed to be an attuned. Immediately he wanted to get over there and make sure the idiots (because most people were) didn't mess this encounter up.

He heard the words 'blow it's ass up' on the winds and was spurred into action. Still holding on firm to the railing as long as he could, knuckles white, he walked up the deck to the steering wheel, shoulder checking the captain off it as he stared wordlessly at the whales. "Let me take over - if you're just going to stand there like a fucking asshole." Perhaps such language wasn't becoming of a priest, but it was mostly lost in the sounds of the ocean anyway.

Admittedly, he didn't have much experience in sailing, but he didn't let that deter him, turning the wheel to move the ship closer to the whales and standing with a wide stance to keep himself steady.

Gideon spends this round getting closer by yelling at the poor fishermen and grabbing the wheel to move the ship himself.

Aurelia barks orders at the crew, most of whom listen. The cannons are loaded, but there is nary a ghostwhale to be seen. These whales have encountered the Ark before and are quite savvy about what she can do.

And what she can't.

But, the bounty hunter wants an explosion, and an explosion she'll get. Multiple cannons fire—one operated by Neos among them—and the balls go sailing outward. One strikes the starwhale as it flounders, the creature bellowing a mournful wail.  The Ark sails toward the whale, her bow and port-side aglow with starlight from the creature.

As for Gideon and Arialla? The eagle will notice that the starwhale's fins are bound by something. It looks clearish and strangely thin, almost like very large netting. Clearly this is why the creature is unable to swim away, or return back to the sky. Arriving fashionably late is the priest, his fishing boat looking quite lacklustre compared to the Ark.

While the crew might not be entirely savvy about the mechanics of cannons and the arc (get it) of cannon-ball trajectory, the ghostwhales are a quick study. The hull of the Ark is assaulted by the boney-back of one of the whales as it rockets toward her from beneath. Currently uninterested in Gideon 's little boat, the other two ghostwhales swim as vertically as they can beneath the starwhale, emerging near enough to him to try and grab the strange constraints around his body, to pull him beneath the waves.

Arialla nodded at the woman asking her to return to the sky and keep an eye out -- that was her plan anyway. It would probably be smart to establish some kind of signaling so that Arialla didn't have to land on the ship and verbally convey everything, but was there time? She could circle over where the whales were, but no, the sky was too dark for her brown feathers to stand out. Attuned telepathy? As far as she was aware, it only worked when someone was in animal shift, at least for new Attuned like her.

But it was probably their best bet. "If anyone here is Attuned, I can speak to them when transformed -- that'll be quicker than landing."

Then Arialla changed forms and took off without seeing if anyone (Neos perhaps) took her up on the offer. Gaining altitude, she watched the cannons go off -- and watched them strike the starwhale. Oh no, no, no -- the Ark was under attack and the starwhale's situation looked dire, and she didn't know if she could help without putting herself in considerable danger. She could land on the starwhale and try to cut the membrane, but only with her talons -- she didn't have so much as a belt knife on her. And she really did not want to get in the water with those ghost whales.

Two ghost whales are trying to pull the starwhale down, she projected telepathically, unsure if anyone could hear her. The other one is, as you may have noticed, beneath you. Don't hit the starwhale!

Arialla offers to use her telepathy to send word to the Ark, but she's not sure if there are any Attuned on board who can hear her (or if they'd have to be in animal shift to do so).

Then she takes her eagle form again and flies over the scene, trying to telepathically project information about the ghost whales' positions.
