Cam liked to sit where no one could see them, where no one could look at them or think about them. They'd come out to the beach right at the end of LongNight, but they didn't want to join in the party, didn't want to get near the bonfire where people might try to talk to or, worse, touch them. Instead they found a spot in the dunes, in the shadows, and watched.
That privacy always came with a price, though: Cam also didn't feel safe if no one could see anything that might potentially happen to them. But then Cam didn't feel safe as part of a crowd of strangers, either. It was more a question of which flavor of anxiety they wanted at the moment than of eliminating it entirely.
And at the moment their mind was changing about that. It was getting cold over here. With a sigh, they got up and prepared to rejoin the party, or at least stand awkwardly near its edge.
