RANDOM EVENT
There is a swamp, a merry old swamp,
in the shadow of the stones.
And within it stands a tower so tall
you'll have to beg and fight and crawl,
to reach the top alone.

You'll have to make your way up—up!
to reach what's at the top.
But you won't be the only one,
so take a moment before you run
so that you don't fuck it up.

The prize it sings so sweetly,
like a lullaby for your bones.
But in order to reach the tower so tall,
you'll have to fly and sink and flee and fall
to reach the top alone.

In the swamp stands a tower made not by natural means. At the top of said tower is a prize. Between you and it are the tar pits, a sad copse of trees, and a rickety ladder.

That shouldn't be too hard, mm?

You have 48 hours to enter this drop. Write your character attempting to reach the top if they go right for the prize.

Mildew knew the swamp; she had grown in it, transformed with it, spoken to it, breathed it for years; anything new was immediately obvious to her and of interest - not necessarily bad, for she understood change had to come...though this change was definite curious. A tower, erected in the midst of the tar pits. Who had had the time to build it without her noticing? Why was it there?

Prize or no, this was a situation that required some considering; she sat on a safe rock, an oasis in the tar, skirt tucked under her legs and elbows on her knees, and watched what happened. What she saw would inform how she would act about this new element of her home.

--
Mildew hangs back and observes the tower for now.
Will you come to talk with me this night?
But she couldn't find how to push through

NEOS
I have but one thing
I wanna say to you
The lion had been prowling the lands of the Wilds, needing time to think about the world he was in at large and the war that threatened it. Having come from the King's End, the Feverlands were eventually the next stop in his lonely travels.

I severely doubt the supposed 'gods' here would show you any attention at their shrines with how far they have sticks up their---

I won't know that for sure until I try. Something's funny about this world conflict and I can't place my paw on it.

A groan echoed in the lion's head before hearing, Please don't get us killed...

From the internal arguing, the beast almost missed the land softening under his large paws more than normal, causing him to raise his head to the scene now around himself and finally behold the tower in the distance surrounded by a tar pit. His luck, a large one, too.

Probably a relic of this land's past, probably not...worth...

Gem?

...Antonio, am I the only one that feels that?

Once mentioned, the lion noticed the intense draw to the place, to the tower, and it was enough to set him on edge. He almost continued forward, almost pulled forward, but had forced himself to stay put long enough to notice the surroundings of the strange tower.

Yeah, I do. Something's pulling on what little may remain of our Aura senses, and I don't like it.

...scout the perimeter, going on ahead blindly appears a death trap, especially without any way for us to fly above the tar.

For once, we're on the same page.

The lion eventually noticed the other that arrived, coolly observing what happens as he watched his steps while moving around the edge of the seeming pit for now.

Neos has a bad feeling about this place as tries to scout around for the most-stable path in his lion form instead of just rushing forward.

letting people down is my thing, baby, find yourself a new gig
He’s supposed to be on a trip, on the way to clear his head, but so far only one thing has gotten become clear. He wants to go home. Still, Nate has some resolve. Just enough to take the long way home, instead of taking the portal. Some part of him feels like he needs to earn this indulgence.

Kings End had been quiet, the miles passing under his feet like a breeze, and Nate HD half expected the swamp and jungle to go the same way. It’s hard to tell if it’s good or bad luck when something calls to him, but Nate has never been one to ignore a some whim. Call it a flaw. So he changes his trajectory, stepping deeper into the swamp, ever careful of hidden pools.

Hot bubbling tar. Hmm. Some part of him had always though that quicksand would be more prevalent in adventures, but he’d take what he could get when it came to strange swamp things. Immediately, Nate begins stalking around the perimeter, trying to find the place where the tar is narrowest, where maybe he could simply jump the distance. Though a weak, nearby tree would also be useful. Why not test out all his new strength?

we're all stories unfinished and we die to find some fitting words to write
Is she stalking Nate? Absolutely not.

Is she ‘keeping an eye on him for Hotaru?’ Also… not quite.

Is she running away from her own feelings? Potentially.

But none of that matters; she’d wanted to see what was beyond King’s End and this, apparently, is what’s here. The Feverlands, if she recalls the little book correctly, a swamp (obviously). Nowhere near as beautiful as the rolling hills of King’s End, Wessex seems to have kept her nose permanently wrinkled since she entered the new region.

Glancing around at the small group of assembled victims, the demigod thinks she could probably teleport up to the top of the tower, but she doesn’t know what’s lurking up there, or if it’s booby trapped, spirit-protected, whatever. Her fingers tap lightly against the cool, smooth metal of her discus, watching Neos and Nate try to find a way around the tar.

NEPHELE
Where has Nephele been this whole time? None of your damn business. What matters is she was already in the Wilds before, and now there's something interesting catching her attention. And wouldn't you know, there's a little gathering of people on the ground below, so clearly this is something mystical calling them all to one place.

And joy of joys, the man she'd blinded is there as well, and Neph must conceal a smirk as she lands in the upper branches of the trees on the other side of the tar pits from the tower. He may or may not recognize her - she'd coated her hair in mud to darken it from her recognizable red, and her hood had concealed much of her face and all of her wings, but she can't count solely on that. So she keeps her distance for now, even if she eyes Wessex with an itching desire to push her into the tar and end all of this nonsense in one fell swoop.

But up here, they cannot reach her, can scarcely see her. And so she snaps off a bare limb and steps off the branches, allowing her curiosity to guide her instead of her thirst for blood for now, moving slowly to see if there is any sort of field around the tower or the tar that will prevent flight with the stick thrust ahead of her to take the brunt of whatever may be there.

There is something to be said for being too cautious, you know. Given that with nothing but a prose to go off of, it really is just a tower in the swamp.

Go on, live a little.

Maybe you die, maybe you get a prize, but stalling won't do you any good.

Two demigoddess's and a lion watch a fae and a demigod proceed.

Nephele will encounter no resistance as she flies. She senses nothing on the breeze, and though her instincts are likely pushing her more towards flee, there doesn't seem to be any danger.

As for Nate? Go on buddy. Jump that tar. Swing from a vine. Do something cool. We all believe in you.

NEPHELE
The feeling in the pit of her stomach tells her to turn away. However Fae are notorious for being hard-headed, and Nephele especially so. With the pursuit of gains - or even simply answers for her curiosity - tempting her onward, there is no reason not to toe the line with fate. Especially if it means keeping any sort of power or gift further away from the Ascended creatures that mill about like prowling cats below.

She isn’t stupid however. Stick aside, she calls upon her magic, casting an illusion within her immediate vicinity to make it appear as if she is five feet further ahead than she is. If there is a creature or foe of any kind at the top of the tower, hopefully it will strike out at the illusion first, giving Nephele time to backpedal away to safety. Stick still held in hand and illusion firmly in place, the Fae ignores those down below, content in her relative anonymity in the sky, and continues on towards the top of the tower.

Nephele continues flying with the stick outstretched, and casts an illusion of herself flying five feet further ahead than her current location in case anything in the tower tries to attack her.

NEOS

Unlike the fae above, Neos has no such blessing in the manipulation of magic here. Whatever power he had before coming here was sealed and hard, and only in fleeting moments like this when something pulls upon otherworldly senses does he experience any trace of it.

At least he knows he still has them deep in his soul, even if its under firm lock and key, with no way to break the lock or the door it hangs from and no way to find the key to that damned lock.

No time to be thinking about what you used to have. We need to figure out the puzzle that is this place.

Yeah, yeah...think this form can leap all the way over there?

Yes, yes it can. Especially with a running start.

He could feel the lips of the muzzle twisting into a sideways frown at the line, at how the other in his head always seemed to know what he didn't despite being two halves of the same mind, but decided not to budge on the thought. Not now, at least. Instead, he found what he thought to be the closest point to the inconspicuous tower without crossing through the tar, and glanced behind himself as he backed up.

And with a solid dash, Neos gave a literal leap of faith as he launched towards the tower with a pounce, hoping to either clear it in one go, or land on something solid that he could chain another pounce from towards it.

Neos pounces forward towards the tower, hoping to either completely clear the tar between him and it or land on something solid enough to let him have a second pounce off it.

Well, it seemed this tower had attracted some guests to her swamp; Mildew watched them begin to approach it, some cautiously and some with quite a lot more bravado. It occurred to her that if within there was something natural, something of the Feverlands that needed assistance, it would be pertinent of her to be there to provide it.

Before the outsiders mucked it up, basically.

Rising, she picked her way delicately across the tar pits and called out ahead, to the Fae and the Lion: "Careful! Many things hide in these lands, dears. They might not like being poked or clawed at." Mildew then focused on looking down and making sure she didn't sink into a sticky mess before getting to the tower - it would be embarrassing, after years of successfully navigating the pits, to fall now in front of guests.

Five of them there and nothing happens yet, other than some tentative probing and a Fae woman flying towards the tower. Her eyes narrow and her head tilts towards one side in consideration, running tongue over teeth as the others make moves. Well why not, then? What’s the worst that can happen? (don’t answer that). Best to skip over the tar pit and the copse of trees and rickety ladder and go straight for the tower. Eyeing the roof - a good landing place, she thinks - Wessex looks at the others’ progress and then attempts to teleport herself safely to the roof of the tower.

Nate notices the others arrive, though he only recognizes Wessex. The fey sparks a moment of suspicion, of paranoia, but there’s nothing familiar about her. Still, his gaze focuses on her as she begins to flutter across the expanse of tar. One of his false arms flickers into view, grabbing a rock off the ground and holding it a moment. Illusions might save her from what’s in front, but not from the rock that’s thrown from behind.

Well he’s not going to be left behind. Nate zips his jacket up, makes sure his boots are done up tightly, and takes a running start at the narrowest part of the tar. It’s the first real test of his newfound godhood, and if he clears the tar he’ll waste no time in racing past the trees and up the ladder. He has a lot of ground to catch up on now.

Nate whips a rock at Neph and tries to leap across the tar and climb up the ladder

Mildew, ever familiar with the swamp; how ever will you get across the tar?

Now, now Nephele. We both know your magic isn't that strong. At best the fae causes what leaves manage to grow on the boughs ahead of her to ruffle somewhat. Next is Tigger Neos bounding along. Given how far lions can jump the attuned is easily able to make his way to the base of the tower.

Finally someone goes for it. As Wessex attempts to teleport to the top of the tower, she'll find herself upside down for a moment a few feet closer to the tower than where she was previously standing, before gravity gets its greedy hands on her, and tugs her back to the ground.

Then Nate really goes for it. His rock HITS Nephele and while it doesn't do much damage, only for Nate...something happens. (#sekrits).

NEPHELE
Nephele is so distracted by Wessex's attempt, and the hilarity that ensues, that she is not expecting the rock that strikes against her from the ground. Hissing, she flies a little higher, free hand moving to touch the wounded spot with a glare that's directed in the general direction of her assailant. Whatever, not her problem; he's still stuck down there for now.

But it's clear now that there's some sort of field or rebound if nothing else. Nephele keeps her stick in hand, reluctant to draw her chakrams when they are so tied to her identity. But she does try to land on the far beam of the tower's platform - not all the way to the center, but enough to plant her feet and jab forward with the stick; what all does it repel? Then she shrugs and - hoping for the best - tries to stick her hand out as well to see if it will toss her backwards as well, ready to fly if need be.

Nephele tries to land on the outer ledge of the platform (if there's a guard rail or anything) and jabs her stick forward, then says fuck it and tries to extend her arm to see what all is repelled and at what strength.
