The sun drooped low in the sky as Rin walked through the roads of Haulani, the brilliantly painted city built to watch over Ahi Coast. As one of many longheat days drew to an end, the temperature only dimmed slightly in the growing evening shadows. The cobbled path beneath her bare feet still felt hot to the touch and the men and women who milled about still had on their daytime attire, something very common for a city whose operations extended well into the dead of night.

In the hours to come, Rin would sit and watch the stars as they matured in the coming nighttime and maybe even talk to them because, after all, she didn't have very many people to talk to besides them. Though she was alone, she wasn't necessarily lonely and if she was lonely, she didn't have much time to dwell on it anyway, so did it matter? She didn't think so.

Rin only walked a few more minutes before sitting down against the wall of one of many random shops she couldn't afford to buy anything from, her legs tucked beneath her in a criss-cross. This part of Haulani was less crowded, but she still watched the seldom passerby with curiosity.

She was unsure of how she got here, not physically against this wall watching the stars unveil themselves, but rather in a more metaphorical sense that took into account status and wealth and all the other things she didn't really have any of. Were her and the passersby, in the grand scheme of things, that different? She thought they weren't, but maybe from a more fortunate or privileged perspective, their lives were worlds apart from her own. It was hard for her to recollect what her life had been like before she officially became an orphan so many years ago so she didn't really miss it. After all, how could you miss something you can't even remember? Curiosity did still bite at her thoughts from time to time: what would it be like to both own and alter parts of the world by simply rubbing two pennies together?

But she wasn't in such a rush to figure these things out, not yet anyway.

it's the road that leads to nowhere
Days have grown long and nights short. Longheat's really taken to Torchline, and most afternoons are spent trying to stay out of the heat - if it can be helped. Between figuring out repairs for the jail and renovations for her own office, Aurelia... doesn't have much else to do. Much as she wants to do something about everything, she has to find ways to keep herself busy with other shit. And other shit - well, it ain't much right now.

It's driving her a bit crazy, if she's honest. So it's nights like these, with nothing pressing and all of these remarkable things available in the market, that Aurelia indulges in the one thing she loves most; food. Maybe she can pretend things are alright for now, if she eats and drinks enough.

Eventually, she's walking through the darkened, torchlit streets with a couple kebabs held precariously in one hand and a citrusy beer in the other. She turns down an alleyway, knowing it will take her home faster.

She nearly trips over the figure sitting crisscross-apple-fuckin'-sauce on the ground, but manages to catch herself and not entirely step all over them.

"Ah!" She exclaims around a mouthful of vegetable, "Sorry-" She shuffles backward out of their space. "Didn't... see you." Getting a better look, she notices that it's a young girl. "You okay? I didn't hurt you, did I?"

Rin is meager in nearly every aesthetic sense of the word; she is scanty in height, weight, and age. Her clothes only emphasized this fact, clearly sized to be worn by bigger men and women, those with some semblance of muscle or fat. Tucked into the bend of some somewhat shady alley and taking into account the little presence she held, she didn't think many would notice her. On the flip side of this coin, she didn't particularly expect someone to run into her in a very literal sense of the expression. Yet, of course, that is word for word what transpired when Aurelia rounded the corner with kabobs and beer in hand.

After a slight collision, Rin is posthaste to scooch away from the accidental contact and hug her knees to her chest just as Aurelia immediately speaks up about the situation, offering an apology. "Don't worry," she replies quickly, her voice lacking sturdiness. At this point, Rin is asked if she is okay - she nods yes - or hurt, which elicits her to stretch her legs outwards and wiggle her toes to show her lack of damage. "All good here," she offers.

It feels as if there isn't much more to say or do, so Rin doesn't stop what she perceives as a slow lull in their conversation from coming. She wonders silently if the woman will use this as an opportunity to excuse herself from the somewhat awkward encounter, which is what most would probably do in the situation. Additionally, Rin isn't particularly fond of the idea that she could be unintentionally impeding whatever business Aurelia had been conducting before their run-in and was partly worried the woman would start to see her as an annoyance more than anything.

it's the road that leads to nowhere
As she takes in the sight before her, her eyes grace across all of the details of the girl sitting here. The way the baggy clothes seem to accentuate her small stature, the scantiness of her general appearance. As the girl seems to curl into herself, Aurelia feels a stark guilt prickle at her heart. She hadn't meant to startle her, but... well, damn, she's so small. She'd be easy to miss, if Aurelia hadn't almost literally walked all over her.

The toes wiggled in her direction, an assurance of the girl's condition, are peered at with conflicted notoriety. This girl is from the streets, Aurelia thinks. She's hunkered down in an alley, with clothes that don't fit, she's thin and her appearance is shabby.

A tight, thoughtful expression knits across Aurelia's face. "Well, I'm glad," she offers to the lull in their conversation, "I honestly didn't notice you there; you blended in so well," she chuckles softly at this, hoping to lighten the tension she feels.

Shifting uncomfortably because she's got all this food in her hands, she glances between it and the girl. Suddenly, she kneels down to sit on her heels and hoists the kabobs in the girl's direction. "Uhm... consider these an apology," she eyes her, hoping the girl will accept the offer. She'd met plenty of people in need who seemed stubborn to accept hand-outs, and she worries that already she may be offensive.

"What are you doing out here so late?" She asks uncertainly, voice feeling unusually strained. "It's not really.. safe to be on your own."

The woman is quick to fill in the gap Rin leaves in their conversation. She remarks about Rin's ability to go unnoticed, which feels like both a neat trick and a lonely thing to the girl; to be invisible is a benefit when danger is present, but it is a curse when desiring to do more, to be heard and felt and noticed. Saying none of this, however, Rin merely smiles at the woman and says, "it happens more frequently than you would think."

For another moment, there is a brief pause, but this one less heavy. It isn't a lull created by a loss for words or the broadening wonder of when the conversation will end. (And it wasn't true silence anyways, Rin could still hear the soft tha-dump of her heart, her steady rhythm from within.) During this brief moment, the stranger sinks to the floor and meets Rin at an equal level. It's unexpected. What gain does someone have by speaking with her when they do not need to?

The wondering is fleeting because she offers Rin her kabobs, thrusting them towards her with no hesitation. "Oh," she says with surprise, reaching out falteringly to grab the skewered food. "Thank you." Some days she ate more than others, and on one of those days, there was a chance she might've declined the food. Today, however, she was hungry.

At her next question, Rins says, "I know, but I like to watch the stars." It isn't a lie, but it also isn't the entire truth. It is dangerous in Haulani at night, but she doesn't have anywhere else to go. They are pinpricks of light in a dark and lonely night, and though they cannot save her from danger, they give her hope and comfort. "Won't you be hungry without your food?"

it's the road that leads to nowhere
The girl takes the food offered and, at first, Aurelia's face gently lifts with surprise. Unexpectedly easy. Okay. Quickly, the look is dashed away and she offers a warmer smile in return to the thanks. "Yeah, of course," she returns, voice low and quiet as she watches.

And her gaze lifts up towards the sky directly above them, between the rooftops, only part of the entire thing visible through the clothing lines between windows. Her gaze narrows and her jaw works thoughtfully. Then, she looks back across at the girl, still level with her, and holds the beer at a more drinkable angle.

Snorting humorously, she pauses and peers down into the mug. "Oh, I'll be fine. Got someone at home who would love nothing more than to fatten me up for a roast, I think," she chuckles softly and takes a swig of her drink.

When she comes back up from it, she brings the back of her hand up to wipe her mouth. She stands back up in an eventual way, reluctant to just up and leave - especially given what she's just said; it's dangerous out here by oneself, in the middle of the night. She can hold her own pretty well, and by now she's a bit better known as the Arbiter. She has some ground to stand on. But this kid? Would anyone care if something happened to her?

Her lips quirk to one side and her brows pinch together. "You know. There are better places to stargaze than an alley..." she says, as if she's considering the alternatives herself, "I bet we can find one of them?" The offer is sudden and spur of the moment, and she's extending out a free hand to help the girl up in the initial excitement of it. "I'm Aurelia, by the way... and you?" Her gaze lingers on the girl's as she holds out her hand, green seeking out green.

Rin is delighted by the thought that Aurelia has a roommate. (At least, that is how Rin has interpreted the woman's words; playful banter in remembrance of a fond friendship.) After all, the girl has never really had a proper home. When she was younger, she lived with only her father, but that house had not been home. The thought that Aurelia has someone she lives with and speaks about so openly is inspiring to Rin, who never had the opportunity to do such a thing. Aurelia has a home, with other people and fond recollections of it all that make her chuckle by simply talking about it (even with strangers, such as Rin). "Ok, if you are sure," she replies with a smile, eventually taking her first bite of the food.

Then Aurelia stands up and tells her that there are better places to stargaze than an alley. Although Rin agrees that there are better places to admire the stars, such as places with few people and dimmer lighting, this seemed to be the lesser of many evils when considering safety. From the stories of faraway places she has heard, it appears that Haulani - and by extension Torchline - is one of the worst cities to find yourself in poverty. If the tsunamis and typhoons are somehow unable to lay waste to the homeless, amoral criminals are usually close behind to finish the task. Rin didn't like to think about that though, always telling herself she will find a way to leave the tropics when the time is right.

She eats a little more off of the kabob.

Unexpectedly, the woman reaches her hand out and offers her aid in finding the aforementioned better locations. "Yes, maybe we could." With little hesitation, she grabs onto Aurelia and rushes to her feet, shaking the woman's hand before letting go. "Aurelia," she repeats back to the woman, solidifying the name in her memory. "I am Rin." She can't help but wonder where they will go next.

it's the road that leads to nowhere
The girl takes the very first bite of food, and Aurelia feels a swell in her chest. It seems that she likes the medley of meat and veggies, too, since she continues to nibble at it. To the offer made of finding better places to stargaze, the girl hesitates a bit but, is surprisingly quick to accept. The Arbiter offers a warm smile at all of this combined, unable to hide her relief in the slump of her shoulders.

Then, her muscles are drawing taut again as she lifts "Rin" to her feet, repeating the name as well. It would seem that they are both intent to remember their names, which gives Aurelia a bit of hope. For what exactly? She isn't sure, but she does have some vague ideas beginning to crop up. It's much easier to help those that are open to it, so if she can get Rin to open up a little... maybe she can do something to make the girl's life a bit easier.

She's so young, Aurelia notes to herself. Not that she hasn't already realized this but, as the girl stands to her meager height and her face becomes more illuminated by the torchlights, her youth is all the more obvious. "Let's go then, yeah?" She nods decisively, sure to keep hold of her beer as she turns and guides Rin through the streets.

The map shop isn't far from here, and Aurelia knows of a place near it that she thinks might be good for what they need. A bit quieter, a little less light, peaceful enough to open up to the night around them. As the lights grow sparser and the streets grow wider, Aurelia directs Rin toward the side of a building. It's two stories, taller than a lot of the others surrounding it. It'll be sure to have a great view of the sky, and Aurelia begins to feel a bit of excitement at the prospect of it herself.

She glances to and fro as she approaches a set of stone stairs that are built into the outer walls of the villa. "Shhh, quietly," she instructs, holding a finger over her lips. A small, clever smile whisks onto her features. "You can go up first, all the way to the roof!" She adds softly, moving her finger to gesture for Rin to go.

"So you like stargazing, huh?" She asks conversationally, voice still quiet as they traverse the staircase. Her free hand comes up to hug the wall. She's a bit tipsy at this point in her escapades tonight, so her words come out sounding unfiltered and too-honest. "Do you know a lot about stars and.. space n' all that? Or.. are you more of a deep thinker?"
