It's taken some time, and been stymied by more than one thing, but finally, Nate has everything together to get the shrine built again. Notes have been sent out, passed along trusted networks, but if he's being honest he has no idea who will show up. Not that it really matters, hands are hands, and he's done much of the prep, scouting out a new, more difficult to access cave, and dragging the crackling obsidian to rest outside it.

Something pinched sits on Nate's features, but he greets everyone who arrives as warmly as he can, a grin sitting awkwardly on his lips as he does. And when the group is complete, he claps his hands and clears his throat, waiting for everyone's attention to be on him before he speaks.

"Everyone knows why we're here, so let's just get it done quick, huh?" He suggests, turning to gesture at a dip behind him, flooded with water. "The new shrine is gonna be in here. It's a little bit of a swim, but it curves up again fast. We need to get the obsidian in there first, alright? I figure it'll go easiest if everyone helps." Nodding, Nate looks over the group once more, then gets to work, grabbing the largest piece of obsidian and maneuvering it through the water.

JACK
It may surprise a few to see Jack present here, but he did, after all, help to repair this very shrine the last time it had been wrecked. That time the monsoons had been to blame rather than destructive hands, but repairs are repairs. "Goin' bigger, badder and spookier, huh?" he murmurs to Nate, his voice echoing as he ducks into the cave. The swim doesn't bother him, not even if it involves diving down beneath the surface - the manta stone at the captain's throat attests to that much.

He does not take the largest piece of obsidian - partially because Nate already has, and also Jack isn't flexing for anyone. So, already barefoot, he grabbed one of the smaller slabs of obsidian and moves to get into the water as well.

I want to say I'm sorry for stuff I haven't done yet
Hearing help was needed with a replacement shrine, Sam had come to help; news of the destruction of the shrine in Torchline had been a blow, a display of just how much their enemies hated them. That they wanted to eliminate any sign, any support they had, no matter how inconsequential to anyone else's lives. Nate's plan of rebuilding inside an underwater cave was sad, in that they had to hide it, but clever.

Dressed not in his usual formal layers but a simple shirt and pants, he gave Nate a slightly embarrassed smile as he passed, remembering the last time they'd seen each other, but there was business to get on with. Picking up the obsidian, Sam made the swim, glad that he didn't have to worry about breathing as he took his time to carefully get the material into the passage.

Varus heard about it as well. Intrigued by what the Governor had said when that Order member had been spouting off his bullshit not that long ago. So he’s investigated, aimed to see what he could find out from everything, and in the end? It had been a wrecked shrine, wrecked twice, and word of rebuilding a new one in a slightly different location.

Which is clever in and of itself.

So he arrives, uncaring of the water they have to get in and out of. His metal arm likely won’t rust, not with the Voice’s help, so he’s content to do whatever is needed. Though, he does offer a nod to the other attendee’s, before his gaze lands on Nate with a crooked grin. “Hey kid.” He greets, before getting to work once the task is laid out.

And so he begins, grabbing some of the obsidian and swimming into the entrance of the cave to deposit it there, continuing however much they needed to.

Varus arrives and gets to work lugging the obsidian!!

If he’s being honest (and Nate supposes he doesn’t exactly have a choice about that right now) Jack is a surprise. But, he gets to work, jumping right in, and Nate can’t complain about it. Nor can he complain about Sam or the fucking old man, the former earning a wink and the latter earning a sharper scowl and a rough “Not yer kid.” Whatever.

Everyone is eager to get going, the bulk of the stone accounted for between the four of them. Jack leads the way through the water, darkness curling around him even with the short length of the tunnel. The end of it is an awkward twist, and the captain will find the easiest way to manoeuvre the stone through the last push is to pull it behind him, a method that gets him all the way into the cave, but one that wedges the obsidian firmly in the tunnel behind it, plugging it up and blotting out most of the light in the cave.

Obviously, the exit being blocked stops the whole procession, Nate bumping into Varus and whirling in irritation. His face darkens even further when he sees what exactly has happened. It’s fine, he has a hammer back outside, he can just turn around, easy, and they can solve this problem. So Nate goes to turn, and turns his own obsidian in a direction that apparently disagrees with it, since it too gets stuck.

This has to be a joke.

Nate takes a long moment to calm himself, then gestures for Sam to come closer to him, pointing at a gap that only the bookmaker can fit through, then miming a hammer. Once he’s sure Sam gets it, he gestures for Varus to move ahead, so they can try to unstick Jack’s rock from behind.

Lmao bad rolls. Get unstuck from the tunnel and finish moving the obsidian!

Not yer kid earns a chuckle from the Ascended – waving it off with a shake of his head and a playful grin. At least this time he’s got his arm back. An arm that doesn’t seem to help him much as he grabs a piece of obsidian, following behind Sam who follows behind Jack, which leaves Varus to bump into Sam just around the time that Nate bumps into him.

And what a wreck that is.

The look from Nate is returned with a shrug of a metal shoulder, before Nate’s stone is getting stuck too and Varus is suddenly so glad he doesn’t need to breathe. He can sit there all day if they have to – though he hopes they don’t. For now, though, as Sam’s instructions are given, Varus slips forward to try and get the rock unstuck.

Varus waits for Sam to leave to get the hammer, and moves up to Jack’s rock that’s stuck and tries to help push it through.

JACK
"Oh, for fuck's sake." Only Jack can hear his cursing, of course, given that he's surfaced in the new cave without the obsidian, feeling very irritated with himself. Also it's dark as fuck in here, the captain closing his eyes (because there's no point trying to squint) and using his telepathy to navigate. Realising what Nate's plan is and sensing one of the new guys drifting closer, Jack dips back down beneath the surface so he can try and free the rock as well.

With Varus working on pushing, Jack goes for pulling, trying to get his fingers around the edges of the obsidian that he might force it to manoeuvre its way around the twist. And if his piece has gotten stuck, he doesn't know how Nate's is going to fare. Hopefully the hammer is enough to persuade the obsidian otherwise.

Jack swears a bit and tries to help Varus wrangle his obsidian around the twist.

Well, this was already going poorly; Sam watched with wide eyes as the tunnel was blocked, unsure what they were going to do. Thankfully, Nate had a plan. It took a moment for him to understand what was needed, but once he did he nodded and swam to the hole, testing out the edges with his hands before slipping through, briefly getting stuck at the hips but wiggling determinedly til he made it.

Grabbing the hammer, he passed it back through before he came back himself, again pushing his way through the little hole. While a part of him was somewhat embarrassed that he was so obviously the smallest one there, it was also nice to be useful. Once he was in and the hammer was returned, he would help moving debris with the rest of them.

Look at them, coming together like a team. Fuck, you could even say they’re some kind of of effective, considering the way Varus and Jack manage to get the first piece of obsidian dislodged, though the former is sent pitching forward into the cave wall as it comes unstuck, bashing his chin on the stone.

There isn’t enough room for Nate to help with the with the pushing, so he returns to his own piece of rock, accepting the hammer when Sam squeezes back into the cave and he’s turning for him to move his stone, leaving Nate behind to lift the hammer and get to work, convincing the stuck piece to split in half, making it easy to move through the tunnel.

That was... fucking horrible.” Dragging himself and his obsidian into the cave, Nate shoves sopping hair back out of his face and looks around slowly. “Okay. We need uh... the stone itself shaped, so it looks nice. A place cleared out and flattened in the centre,” he gestures where he means, about how wide a space it should be, “and three divots carved out so the obsidian will stay upright.” Nate sighs, and lifts a hand to rub at his mouth, his skin glowing under his hand. “We should widen the entrance too.

Nodding to himself, Nate shifts, stepping back towards the hole. “I’ll be right back with the tools, decide what you’re doing and we’ll get to it when I’m back.” And with that, he jumps back into the water, reappearing a few moments later with a bag of dripping tools. Hope everyone’s got firm grips.

I thought we were still waiting on someone my bad We got the rocks unstuck! Now the following tasks need to be completed!

1. Clear the actual shrine space, flatten it out and make sure it’s free of debris
2. Make slots in the ground for the 3 largest pieces of obsidian to be stood upright in
3. Clean up the edges of the obsidian so they look less manhandled >.>’
4. Widen the entrance hole!

"Mm, weren't my favourite thing," Jack agrees as he surfaces for the second time with the obsidian in tow. It takes a bit of wrangling to get it all out of the water, the captain sweeping wet hair back from his face, before he straightens up on his feet and squints around. He still can't see for shit, but it shouldn't be too much of an issue given the proximity of the other men and their thoughts to lend them a picture of the cavern.

"Guess I'll play janitor," he says, getting to work in clearing the obvious debris while Nate goes to get the aforementioned tools. He gets rid of the largest rocks in their way and takes up a small shovel and a pickaxe to start flattening the area out.

Jack decides to clear debris! He gets rid of any large rocks, and uses a shovel and pickaxe to flatten everything out.

It takes quite a bit of pressure to get that obsidian dislodged, but Jack and Varus manage it, even if the Ascended careens forward and bashes his chin against the stone. It didn’t break the skin but it’ll likely shimmer with silver before he knows it. At least it’s more frustrating than it is painful – considering the obvious.

He lugs his own stone into the cave, wiping off the water from his metal arm, waiting until everyone else has lugged their stone into the space. And when the new tasks are given, Varus is already grabbing a tool Nate’s returned with, trying to imagine what the kid is getting at with the divots and begins to get to work digging the space for the rock to sit in.

Relieved to have fit through and back through the hole, Sam was actually quite pleased with himself. He watched Nate decide what they had to do, a little surprised that he put such an emphasis on how the shrine was to look; he'd never thought Nate all that bothered with aesthetics. Maybe he'd really become devout, or his time with Sunjata had softened him a little.

Regardless, Sam was happy to get on with a job. Nodding, he went to work on the entrance, chipping away at it and pulling what loose rocks he could away from the edge until the gap grew around him. Eventually, satisfied that someone could easily get through even of a large size, he began placing debris and rocks outside of the cave.

If there is one small mercy about this whole experience, it’s that when the work does go, it goes smoothly. Honestly, Nate can’t help but feel like disaster is just around the corner with the way they had started, but nothing seems to go amiss. He brings the tools in, and they each set out to their chosen tasks.

Sam’s task isolates him from the group, a fact that seems to work in his favour without anything there to rob his focus from the task of chipping away at the entrance. The stone is stubborn and unyielding, but already damaged from the obsidian being forced through it, and the bookmaker will be able to open the tunnel into a more comfortable squeeze.

Jack gets the space cleaned without trouble. Whether it’s intentional or just coincidence, he to time his cleaning with the mess Varus makes shaping the divots in the ground. Perhaps it’s luck, or perhaps it’s the firm grip of a metal hand, but Varus makes the task of chipping away at stone look downright breezy. With everything else taken, Nate gets to work reshaping the broken obsidian, flattening the bottoms so they can stand upright more easily, and softening the broken edges into a nicer looking silhouette.

As Sam resurfaces, Nate calls out to him, voice echoing in the cave. “Can you build a uh... a wall, a flood wall around the entrance too? We don’t want the monsoons fucking it up.” Amazingly, the doctor manages to huff a laugh along with the words, though there’s no humour in his face.

It works out that the rest of them finish their tasks in about the same amount of time, Jack left waiting the longest. Nate drags one of the finished slabs towards the captain, arranging it carefully and distracting Jack to hold it still, before he does the same to Varus. The third slab is held up by his own glowing arms, the doctor pushing for just a moment dig a pool of silvery wire from his toolbox. “Just hold these still, and help me get the wire all wrapped around nice, okay?” He says to Varus and Jack, gaze turning to each of them in turn before Nate’s hands start moving.

Nate assigns the following tasks

Sam: build a flood wall around the entrance to the cave
Jack and Varus: Help Nate weave wire around the stones so they hold each other up something something physics trust me

Well that's not too shabby, if Jack says so himself. He's basically admiring his own handiwork by the time Nate calls him over, the captain nodding and taking hold of the slab as indicated. Soon enough they are joined by Varus and a pair of Nate's extra arms, the captain raising his eyebrows at him. "They must make it easy to get into trouble," he remarks with a smirk. Then there's wire to weave and slabs to keep steady, Jack nodding and getting promptly to work.

Quite how it's all supposed to go together is beyond him (something something physics indeed), but he does his best with whatever he can envisage from Nate's thoughts about the matter. Deft hands weave wire about the slabs, but whether or not he's successful is another matter entirely. If it all goes wrong they can just pass it off and say it's supposed to look like that right?
