What was soundproofed inside also soundproofed what was happening outside.

Emmett's eldest brother had, not for the first time, clogged the toilet. He said that it was the pipes freezing but the family knew better. So of course it was he who was charged with opening the door to give the pipes outside a good rattle. The luxere herd was close and he'd only be out for a second.

The problem wasn't how long he was out though.

The problem was merely the fact that the door had been opened.

The lure and power of Frey's enchantment had drawn them in, ever closer, ever hungrier. There was something down there. Something they wanted. And so they waited. Freezing the pipes had been all too easily. Normally the Palmer family was an uneventful hub during LongNight...but not this year.

They came like a plague.

Until you have seen the amount of blood a body actually produces, you probably wouldn't think it real, to see how much had begun to soak into the floor, the rugs, the wallpaper.

Only Emmett's two youngest siblings were spared the horror-show that was the main floor. They hid downstairs, close to their brother's door. They mewled and pounded against it, screaming his name into the keyhole as their family was eviscerated upstairs.

Shadows lurked at the top of the stairs, blood dripped down ... but the monsters stayed. Enticed by what Frey had done, they were also wary of it.

But they would watch, and they would remember.

LongNight was far from over, and with the windows and doors of the main floor broken, the floorboards soaking up the lifeblood of Emmett's family and their bodies unceremoniously pulled out into the snow, the four who remained surely could not stay there any longer.
