Maeve
Why would you make out of words
A cage for your own bird?
She left Locke on the beach after their talk, feeling nothing but numb, unable to find it in herself to feel anything else. Maeve starts walking again, thinking she might go home if only because her bed could be a refuge. It's the only place she has left to go. Aurelia isn't here. No one is here. Maeve knows that she's going to have to push this all down. Bottle it up and hide it away, tuck it back on a shelf so she can simply function because there is nothing left to do aside from that.

It's the last thing that trails through her head when she sees a flash of light, eyes blinking and following the trail, watching it disappear into the sky to become nestled among the stars. A familiarity stirs in her chest, brows knitting together, remembering the raven boy and his lute that hid away in the Halenani. His talented fingers and the music he weaved for her. How he was there for her when no one else had been.

Maeve knows it's likely silly to think he'll be there now, but it wasn't that far away. The docks are just ahead and she doesn't think he'll have left that quickly. Even if he did shift. She pushes forward, walking a little faster, feet a little more sure as a desperation she wasn't expecting stirs in her and she picks up even more speed. A desperate need not to be alone urging her forward and she follows that drive until she's to the spot she saw the star shoot into the sky. Except he's not there.

Aidon circles above her, slit pupils scanning the area for the familiar figure that he sees in Maeve's mind, able to better look through the darkness than his bonded. The dragon does spot something. A shock of dark hair, pale limbs bobbing in the water, barely tucked beneath the docks. The image finds its way back to Maeve and she falters in her steps, urging Aidon closer even as she alters her path, heading to the shoreline where the dock extends and waves lap at the sand. He lands before she does, splashing into the water, finding the limp form of Korbin bobbing in the water face down. "No, no, no, no, no..." Maeve breathes, stumbling into the water, the hem of her dress clinging to her legs as she wades in up to her knees.

With trembling hands, Maeve reaches out, grabbing him beneath his armpits and hauling him backwards onto the shoreline. "Don't you fucking dare." She says mostly to herself, the fear coursing through her veins enough to make her dizzy as she drags his heavy body onto shore, struggling to roll him over. Panic seizes her and it's with trembling hands that she pushes the hair from his face, tears already blurring her vision, clammy fingers fumbling for his wrist and searching desperately for a pulse. She finds none, but that doesn't stop her from putting her mouth on his, breathing air into his lungs and starting chest compressions, fighting for a life that Ludo has already taken. "Help! I need help down here!"

No one comes. Not for her and certainly not for him. She's not sure how long she does it. How long she tries in vain to breathe life back into the raven boy. Her arms ache and she's breathing hard. There are tears dried on her cheeks and sweat on her brow despite the chill in the air, a heavy finality settling over them as he lays there lifeless, blue eyes unseeing and no longer full of light. Maeve lets out a strangled sob, gingerly closing his eyes as she leans forward to press a kiss to his forehead, "I'm sorry, Korbin. I'm so sorry." She holds him after that. Until the weight of him makes her limbs go numb and someone finally finds them in the sand by the docks.

~FIN~
When it sings so sweet
The screaming, heaving fuckery of the world?
