MABEL

She slipped out along the dead of night, where the moon was crisp and clear against the autumn evening – eerie, enigmatic, a twist and turn of her own soul broadening over witching hours. Evelyn would’ve loved the hollowed atmosphere, and so Mabel rejoiced in it for her, taking apart the fleeting moments – eyes cast towards the lunar void, and then over the grass.

Unceasing, unrelenting. That’s what she wanted to be.

Eventually though, she slowed at a series of stone steps. Glancing around, she followed their haphazard trail with her gaze until it seemingly stopped in the middle of the air –

And displayed a vampire gourd on top – bellowing and howling at the world. As if it’d just been made king.

“Stupid git,” she muttered, and readied her daggers.

Heavily burdened with some leisure time, Wessex once again finds herself in the midst of Kings End, because she actually really likes it there. It’s green. It’s healthy. It’s calm (for the most part, once you get past the overly-aggressive daemons). Even with the gourds taking over Caido again this season, it’s a nice change from the Grounds.

Rounding one of the larger knolls, the General hears a low voice coming from the direction of that weird, lone staircase and she suddenly changes direction. Bare feet silent on the thick grass, she strolls around a smaller rise and finds - yes, Mabel - facing off with what appears to be a lone pumpkin. Chuckling a bit, the Wraith holds herself back and crosses her arms across her chest. “You gonna kill it?” she calls to her younger sister, amused and interested and right now, perfectly content to watch the saga unfold.

MABEL

The younger Ascended expected to be alone this evening, save for one or two irritating gourds. Wessex’s voice didn’t make her jump though, simply turning her head over her shoulder, a rough nod correlating and coordinating there, before her eyes swung back over to the now howling vampire gourd. If she didn’t know any better, presuming these things had little intelligence at all, the damned thing acted like it’d been recently crowned, bellowing at the world like some mighty tyrant. “Probably,” she motioned in reply, considering, contemplating, before putting away her daggers.

And grabbing her throwing knives.

“What brings you out?” By way of curiosity, while she balanced a few along her fingertips, preparing, angling, practicing a few notches along the tips of her digits. She wouldn’t presume to know or understand all of the Wraith’s actions and responsibilities. Perhaps there was something else out in King’s End for shadows to cling to.

Then she released the blade, watching it sail through the air.

Though she’s personally a bit weary of killing the vampire gourds, this one is indeed particularly irritating. Wessex wrinkles her nose at a loud screech. “I don’t blame you,” she says, coming a little closer, but still well out of range to do anything and all sharp pointy things remain sheathed or hidden away.

Mabel’s question prompts an idle glance back over her shoulder and a shrug. Nothing important. “Oh, I don’t know, I find the Barrows kind of fascinating. All the ghosts of daemons, people long dead. All the history we don’t know about, except through stories.” Stopping herself before going on a ramble, Wessex hums quietly to herself. “Though the only real ghost story I can remember must have taken place in Torchline.”

Even in her stories, she doesn’t get much about the Grounds. “And you? Out here?”

MABEL

The knife cut through the air, just skimming over the head of the gourd. It almost mockingly gestured its vines at her in an immodest display of its abilities, and Mabel fought a sneer coming over her face, preparing another stiletto. Even an answering hiss felt appropriate, but not in front of Wessex.

She didn’t expect the reason behind the Wraith’s answer to be somewhat similar to her own – though it wasn’t the history that tied Mabel here, but the fascination in the fertile fields, in the wide open expanse, in the way that crops could’ve been rich, and some maybe wouldn’t have starved to death, kneeling before altars. “Wandering. Sometimes I like to think my family would’ve been successful, out here.” She raised her head, and flickered the knife once more.

The mention of Torchline did earn a wrinkle to her nose, but in the callous way and weight of memories. In death and resurrection. Maybe the seas and beaches should’ve kept its phantoms, but curiosity compelled. “What sort of ghosts?”

That makes both of them surprised. Wessex nods slowly. Heavily. “Probably. Maybe this was what the Field and Outskirts used to look like, before -” If only they had Cameron’s thingy - what was it called? A camera? that could save a picture of something for later. “Beats what it looks like now, anyway.” If she’s a little hard on the Grounds, its now only because she knows what the rest of the world looks like.

Since it looks like Mabel is more than capable against the lone, defiant vegetable, Wessex sits her butt on the ground and leans back on her hands. “The kind of ghosts that take revenge on people who did them wrong.”  Unsure if the girl is up for listening to an old story, the Wraith pauses there, leaving the story dangling eerily in the air. A premise and an ending, but nothing to indicate what might happen in between

MABEL

The knife landed far better this time – straight into a vine – and the gourd cackled through its pain and onslaught by hanging from its reaches, still provoking, still goading, still being a little piece of shit. Mabel glared and it simply didn’t seem to care; perhaps one of the most arrogant beasts she’d ever seen. With a snort and sigh, she reached for another, inclining her head along briefly to Wessex.

“Could we get to the Grounds to look like this?” Or did it matter anymore? With so many of their kind occupying the Hollowed region? She didn’t know. In more hopeful days, before everything else crumbled into nothingness, the girl might’ve extended those wellwishes and thoughts into more than just notions.

Her eyes narrowed briefly, as the Wraith contemplated a tale Mabel suddenly would like very much to hear. Maybe Wessex knew that. Maybe the young Ascended was very prone to her indulgent, vengeful tactics. Maybe it didn’t matter. “Could you tell me?”

“I think if we asked for it, the Voice would be happy to find a way to do more than letting nature run its course,” which is to say, yes, but without outside help, it wouldn’t be quick. And Wessex does not say the obvious after the war, because that would put too many other things into the air. Too many ifs and dreams and she is already tired from hoping and wishing and praying and doing all in the face of inevitability.

Anyway, to do so now would be futile. Fighting will undoubtedly come their way and who knows how much more destruction it might cause.

There’s a bit of a twisted smile and the General launches into the story without hesitation. “Once upon a time there was an old couple who lived at the edge of the cliff. They were childless and poor, but they were happy with each other, and kept the lighthouse going so ships could travel safely to the city’s port. And in turn the people of the town made sure they didn’t starve or go without warm blankets in the winter.

One year, the husband decided he wanted to surprise his wife with something extra special - a piano. So he called on every favor he could to make it happen, and somehow - it did. His wife woke up to a beautiful new piano on her 75th birthday. She was beside herself - elated - and the only thing that surpassed her love for it was her love for her husband.

Things continued on as they usually did for a few more years, until one night, the Lighthouse light was out. And when the townspeople came to investigate the next morning, they found the couple dead, the piano missing, and the light smashed. And burned into the floor was the insignia of a feared pirate - it was obvious what happened. The the couple was buried and the the light repaired. And a new couple moved into the house.

Slowly but surely, weird thing started to happen. The wife heard piano music in her dreams. Scratch marks, as if something heavy, had been dragged across the floor. Nothing unpleasant for the new lighthouse keepers, just… spooky. Well, it wasn’t too long before the lighthouse went out again, and again, the townspeople feared the worst. But when they went to investigate, they found the new keepers trying to repair it - it had just suddenly gone out. No cracks. No damage, no nothing. Then a kid who had gotten bored called for everyone to come look, and out in the water, they could see a mostly-sunk ship.

When Attuned went to investigate it to see if there was anything salvageable, they found it was the pirate’s ship, and the pirate and his crew had drowned, unable to get a door open because the lighthouse keeper’s piano blocked it and couldn’t be moved - even underwater - even by a shark.”
Pausing for a moment, Wessex grins at a memory. “And that’s where my mother would say that that’s why you don’t steal and murder, because you never know when their ghosts are going to come back and kill you.”

Which had done nothing to stop her, personally. But it was nice to hear her mom’s voice in her head again.

Perhaps – and it could be a thought for after. For survival. For wars that were finished, gone, and done (were they ever?). “Later, then,” she whispered halfheartedly; the expectations brandishing over her shoulders suddenly very bothersome. She immediately drew the next blade along her digits, waiting for the right moment (the gourd was now sticking its tongue out at her), before launching and hitting its side. It snarled and sneered, waving its vines around, clearly intending to amble away; no longer worth the obnoxious fight.

But then there was the story, and she listened as she crouched and moved through blades of grass, tilting her head towards the sounds of the tale while preying upon the gourd as it shuffled down the stone steps. Old couples on cliffs, lighthouses and nothingness, pianos for gifts. Despite it being a ghostly tale, Mabel hadn’t expected the elderly pair to be the ones dead within the middle – and she wrinkled her nose at the semblances and imagination; pirates and smugglers coming into the void.

And for what?

Sunken ships and eerie fragments lent her some other proportions of theories and guesses, and a harsh bark of a laugh unfurled from her as the piano managed to find its own vengeance. “Serves them right,” she uttered thereafter, before pinning another knife into the gourd – and it finally grew silent, still.

“Right?” Wessex asks hypothetically, snorting a bit. “Who the fuck puts a piano on a ship anyway?” She can only shake her head and shrug - it was a story from a long time ago, with no meaning other than the bare bones of nostalgia.

A pirate ship is still a stupid place for a piano. So it did serve them right - for being stupid, if nothing else.

Light blue eyes fall upon the dispatched pumpkin, the grass around them still but for a light breeze that blows through the rolling hills and valleys. Mournful, almost, perhaps the faintest crying of someone long dead. Apt, for Ludo’s season, she thinks. “See any other pumpkins?” she asks, sitting up a bit and indicating Mabel’s slight vantage point. If not, they could probably call it a night.

Who the fuck stole pianos anyway? Mabel couldn’t imagine the amount of irritation and annoyance it would’ve taken simply to get the instrument out of the lighthouse, let alone a ship.

But perhaps that was for further contemplation.

The breeze chafing in hardly bothered her; used to the mournful sounds of her own mind, of her own spirit, of empty rooms and vacant halls and hollowed out frames. But as for the remains of pumpkins, none seemed to be in sight, as she scanned the fields, as she looked out over the distance of patchwork greenery and shadow. “No.” Another shake of her head, and she meant to turn, to meander in the same wake as before. “I think we can head back now. Do you have any other stories?”
