He can see the way her jaw feathers, the way her lips press into a thin line, but Sunjata isn’t sorry about it – he needs to know, wants to know.
And her answer isn’t at all reassuring as she says that more than they’d like would think he is, and it causes him to work his jaw too, his gaze snapping away from her and away from Edmund to look anywhere else but there. Even as she steps forward and runs her hands through her son’s curls, Sunjata’s gaze is stormy and trained on a speck on the counter of the shop. “There wasn’t a child involved before.” He says quickly. “We do know the truth but that doesn’t matter, Maeve. I knew the truth my father was around and yet everyone just assumed I was wrong or hallucinating.” His gaze drifts back to her.
“And I had a mob attack me while I was governor, because people thought they saw me do something I didn’t.” He readjusts so that he might hand Edmund back to Maeve.
