Heavy snowclouds converge upon King's End, and a blizzard rages through. The Barrows are lost beneath a blanket of white, and even the entrance to the Queen's Gambit is impossible to find in this weather. But there is one place - one lonely, grassy knoll, which remains untouched by snow or ice or cold. Upon this knoll the skies are clear, and the stars and the moon shine down.

Upon this knoll, the God of Life stands and waits for a reckoning. And when he speaks, although it is quiet, the name will ring true throughout King's End. Throughout the Wilds, even. And Vi waits until his call is answered, for as long as it takes. The man will need to fight the blizzard to get to him, but some things are worth fighting for.

"Noah Olson."

The storm raged around them, and within their shelters they were all asleep and nestled in warmly. Their constructions were holding up, and it was enough for them to survive. They were nothing compared to the buildings they all once dwelt in during Halo's long winter, but they were safe. Even with the shelter keeping him safe from the cold, Noah still chose to keep himself wrapped in the thick fur of the polar bear. He was curled up tight, deeply asleep, when he suddenly stirred.

Unafraid, but instantly awake, the bear lifted his head. He was not mistaken in hearing his own name spoken aloud, but as he looked around neither Deimos nor Cordelia had entered his shelter to disturb his slumber. Noah rose then, his steps hastened toward the door. Eira stirred then, grumbling some as her bonded left the shelter. Concerned at this, she took off after him. There was no hesitation in either body -- Noah moved towards the invisible tether that came with his name, and Eira after her bondmate. The snow and wind were harsh, and even as indomitable as he was in this form, it still took him time to find the source of the call -- whisper -- beckon.

Despite the darkness, Noah could see clearly the figure ahead of him. Unfamiliar, yet familiar, Noah stepped onto the grass as a man. He let a shudder of a breath escape, eyes full of reverence lifting to the figure. He was speechless as he stood before the one who called him, eyes searching for an answer on his face.

Vi is the wind and the sky and the sea - not in the same way as Rae, it is true, but he brims with the life that is carried by it all. And he brims with the anticipation of Noah's arrival, standing as steady as all time for when the mortal finally steps into his midst. And only when he does arrive does the God of Life seem to stir, raising dark eyes to his face. They stand of a height, or so it will seem, and yet Vi seems larger, infinitely more with every breath.

"Noah Olson," he says again, though this time it is less a command and more a greeting. "Sentinel of the North. Defender of the Old Gods. Hunter within the Wilds." He smiles, and rather than comfort, with it comes the weight of every word he has spoken. "The world grows darker, and I grow weary of it, Noah Olson. I look for one to be the light. And the light within you has potential."

When his name is spoken there is a warmth that spreads over Noah's chest. He tried to keep his breathing steady as he stood in the presence of the god, but he was unable to manage it. It was shaky and he felt even his hands shaking slightly at his sides. Eira approached then, pressing her body into Noah's legs and chirping up at the god, just as she had done with Frey. As each word is spoken, Noah felt the weight of it. Heavy on his shoulders as the snow is on the shelter he left behind, the hunter needed to shift his weight to hold it.

And then there was a flash of a memory, of tiny hands and of tiny hooves bucking out as Noah fled the shrine, joy overcoming him. His mind swirled. It was a memory formed so young, that until Noah looked up into the soft, steady brown eyes that cast down on him now, he had simply forgotten the blurred, fuzzy images. "Vi." He finally breathed out, knowing who stood before him and called him to his presence. The same soft, steady brown eyes had lifted the reindeer from his very spirit at an age too early to give testament to.

But Noah had been seen like this before, and the familiarity and reverence of it all nearly took his knees out from under him -- but he stood, the Sentinel, as the god of life called him. "What would you have me do?"

Vi regards the mortal before him in his entirety, from those first steps all the way to those which had brought him here and now, and wordlessly he extends his hand. "I would have you shine," he says. "I would have your light eliminate the shadows where the Ascended crawl. I would have you take it back, and I would have you take no prisoners."

Somehow the snow around the Sentinel will seem darker even than the blackest midnight, as if the only source of illumination comes from Vi and Vi alone. "Will you do that?" the God of Life asks. "Will you be my light?"

Darkness pulls in on every side in a way that was too dark not to notice. He could feel it, as if the darkness was tangible around him. It brushed against his shoulders and over Eira's back, the world falling silent with the blackness. Before him stood Vi, despite it. Radiant and holding all of his attention. Noah's brows knit together and his forehead wrinkled at it all. Vi was choosing him? What was Noah to say? He had followed Frey after learning about the god from Phoebe. Noah was no devout follower of Vi. He hadn't studied him or sought after him at shrines or prayed out to him in times of danger or praise. Despite having the memory solidified in his mind now of his attunement, Noah had all but ignored the deity throughout his life.

Yet, he was still seen. Known. Regarded.

"There is an honor in this I feel I do not deserve." The hunter spoke honestly, and with a steady voice. His breathing had steadied out, strength returned to him, and he knew it was because of the eyes that looked his way. There was no hiding who he was when this god standing before him could see into his very core, into his soul, and had before upon attunement. If Vi saw light in him, a light that the god could use to do exactly what Noah truly wanted in life -- to protect, to shelter, to hold steady those he loved -- then he would press on in his name. "I will."

"There are many pathways, but the destination is the same. Prove your worth under my banner." Enigma and poetry, Vi cannot help but feel amused by the contrast between his words and his mere nature. "Sometimes, the world decides for us where our loyalties lie, and where our focus must be." And in these dire times, whilst the gods watch and consider, and quietly judge in their own way, some opportunities cannot be wasted.

It is true that Noah has not devoted himself to life. But it is also true that Vi does not necessarily need him to preserve life - merely to fight in the name of it. Higher powers and greater causes. Over and over and over.

"Then it is done."

Reaching out, Vi seizes Noah's hand and, between god and man, a feeling like lightning will seem to shatter through the Attuned's bones. Warping, changing, making new. Making more.

All will plunge to darkness.

And yet Noah will remain, as the light.

Vi has chosen Noah to be his demigod for the coming war. When the darkness fades, he will find himself in Stormbreak.

He has been reset to Level 1, has retained only his Polar Bear shift, and has received the following base abilities:

Divine Opposition | Noah summons a celestial shield dome in a 15ft radius. Any allies within the shield receive Basic Healing, and any enemies are damaged at a Basic level. The shield lasts for 1 post, with a 3-post cooldown.

There in a Flash | Noah may teleport between any board's adjacent sub-boards, providing he has visited the board before. Requires a 3-post cooldown between uses.

The hunter had no words left for the god. Every syllable spoken by the bringer of life only cemented the decision in Noah's heart. It was all heavy, still, upon his shoulders. He wanted to say more, wanted to do more, but as Vi reached out for his hand and Noah took it there was no time. Electricity rippled throughout his core and across bones, vibrating sinew and muscle.

Then everything went dark.

Finally, after what seemed like an eternity, the hunter awoke. The sun was hazy above him, and he blinked away the snowflakes that fell on his face. Eira shifted next to him, and as Noah lifted his head and sat up, he noticed that she had created a well-worn path around him. Noah lifted his hand to his head, brushing back blond hair. He blinked, head swiveling as he took in what was around him. He had only seen the sight once, but even as people rushed out to see if he was okay, he knew where he was.

He knew who he needed to find.
