Paige releases Everest once they are on the beach, not wanting to hold onto him any longer than necessary lest she makes him uncomfortable by doing so. "It's easier to walk without them cause your toes can stabilize you better." Paige explains the thought behind not wearing shoes, knowing that an explanation like that would make a lot more sense than saying it simply feels nice not to wear shoes when walking on sand.
"Last year's monsoons we're really bad. The Halenani, where me and my momma lived, fell down cause of the storms. My auntie Maeve was stuck inside for a bit, but Mr. Jata got her out. That's why we have the new big house." She shrugs her shoulders, waiting for Everest to remove his shoes before suggesting they get closer to the water. "This year though we'll have a barrier of stars thanks to Safrin."
Paige smiles reassuringly towards her friend, taking a few steps towards the shoreline, "I bet we can find some pretty shells down there. Maybe even a few crabs." She was hoping there would a tidal pool or two, thinking the Hart boy might like to see one up close.
