REMI
the lullaby
I wear this crown of thorns
Upon my liar's chair
I will try and keep it contained, whatever it is. Remi calls out through the attuned bond, knowing that both Deimos and Ronin would be able to hear him. Though the Lullaby wasn't making any great attempts to be stealthy, (his brand of violence was upfront and obvious), still there was no need to shout. Shifting his eyes to better see in the dark, and his ears to hear, the alchemist prowls forward with his senses focused solely on locating whatever it might be they have come to kill.

Assuming that whatever is guarding the relic (or holds the relic, like last time), will be as obvious as it is formidable, Remi keeps his shifts just beneath the surface that the might instantly shift to either manticore, kraken, or wraith, depending on what might best suit whatever lurks in the darkness.

Remember to include whatever items you're bringing with you in your opening post.

Remi, predictable, brings nothing.

He moves partially shifted to try and locate whatever it is that's within.

I'll hit it hard. As long as someone can keep its attention, I'll keep the pressure on, Ronin responds to Remi - and the group, as a result - as he moves more deeply into the darkness after his husband. He takes a few measured, deep breaths to centre himself and snuff out the light that will otherwise flicker out of him, partially shifting his hands and eyes that he might have a dragon's claws and senses to draw upon.

What sort of things live underground? he wonders, before backtracking. Then again, it was a gargoyle last time, I suppose... Ergo, it probably didn't matter what usually lived underground. It could be anything.

Ronin doesn't bring anything that isn't listed in his profile.

He snuffs out his Dazzle and partially shifts his hands and eyes to that of a dragon.

DEIMOS
ache first, but then let the cuts close
spit out the blood
The Sword had never been an individual to simply let others do it all – even if they were predictably much stronger than him. He carried incantations, shifts, and other enchantments that could prove necessary, vital, or at the very least useful – given pending circumstances they were about to face. So he kept the fibers of apprehension at bay, following in step with Remi and Ronin, forging no light, bag of holding on his shoulder, ready, willing, and able, partially shifting his eyes into a tiger gaze, and peering into the darkness. I will help in whatever way I can.

Not knowing what they potentially faced, much like many times over, still ground away at him. If the Ascended hadn’t been able to snag the relic, what had made the effort too difficult? What lurked within? I presume anything is possible here. An inward snort, but no barking laughter; given the multitudes they’d all seen. The monsters lurking in the wings. The guardians of ancient pieces.

Deimos partially shifts to utilize senses in the dark.

No companions have been brought, and he has everything listed in his profile within his bag.

key quest

They say that fish who have been caught once and then released are harder to catch the second time. What of a basilisk, I wonder? Let's find out.

The peephole into which you've strayed will stay fairly narrow with a ceiling that forces Deimos to hunker down slightly. The tunnel will open up before the Sword's back starts to ache, and though you all have beastial eyes, the most you can sense is that the cavern you've entered into feels large. Are there more openings here? Is the room spherical? Are there drops in the floor, places you shouldn't step, other predators?

Your silent thoughts hardly conceal the vibrations of your heavy footfalls against the ground, and no sooner have you wandered into the vast darkness than the beast strikes. With only one eye its aim is not what it once was, and as it lunges out of the blackness towards Remi, what might be thought of as its shoulder heaves into the rocky wall sending debris scattering down onto the Huntsman, Lullaby, and Sword.

Without light, distances are hard to measure here. Sounds travel and bounce, and your bearings are likely not as steady as you'd like them to be.

Without further ado, it all kicks off.

Ronin winces at the debris that bounces off his back and shoulders, hunkering down where possible and letting out a snarl of discomfort. What happens next is impulse rather than decision making on his part, and his Dazzle burns to life that he might illuminate the cavern to get their bearings and also check on Remi for any wounds. Seeing none that aren't more than superficial, he nods to the Lullaby and Sword both. Let's do this, he hisses.

And before even taking into account what it is they're doing this to - huh, a big snake - Ronin has ignited three starbolts around his form, firing them off towards their one-eyed opponent.

Ronin's Dazzle shines out to illuminate the area, and he instinctively flings three starbolts at the creature!

REMI
then it went dark
The sudden sound of movement and the inhale of rocks falling away from the tunnel has Remi tensing and lowering himself slightly. The debris that bounces off of him is hardly even registered as Ronin's dazzle illuminates what appears to be a onyx some sort of massive snake. Having never seen a basilisk before and his memory of Vai's fairytales just now failing him with regard to the creature's optical abilities, Remi does precisely as he said he would do outside.

Following in the wake of his husband's starbolts, Remi shifts and as he does, he grows, and grows, and grows. Significantly larger than the basilisk, the kraken attempts to wind his tentacles around the creature's head and neck the way one might when trying to restrain a regular snake. For now he'll simply see if this is enough to immobilize the creature's upper portion in his grasp, ignoring its tail and lower section for the time being.

Remi kraken's and tries to restrain the upper portion of the basilisk (head, neck, "upper torso").

DEIMOS
ache first, but then let the cuts close

Deimos was fairly sick of caves, and this one was likely going to fall right in the same category of quiet, apprehensive loathing.

Movements and motions, dazzles and arrays of light, illuminated the immediate monster and issue. At least it hadn’t wasted any time – direct in its cataclysm. He shook off the debris, placing it in the back of his mind for potential problems (a need for reinforcing, perhaps), and watched with widening eyes as Remi unfurled his own tactics. Do we know what this is? he asked; in case the creature had ever been mentioned via Monster Hunting tomes and books he’d once looked within (why only one eye? A giant cyclops snake?)

But for now, there were initial strikes to unravel.

The Sword tapped into the many enchantments within his ichor, and chose the most familiar: Life Drain. Intending to slink and unravel towards where the snake was open, unrestrained, and not pinpointing at either of his allies.

Deimos uses Mastered Life Drain to attack the basilisk.

Starlight starbright, first star I see in the peepholes tonight.
Wish I may, wish I might, please kill this fucking snake tonight.

Three blasts of bright light strike the basilisk. Scales like black stone fly off into the darkness as the creature hisses an ear-splitting cry of frustration. Swelling to a size that the interior of this particular peephole nearly cannot contain, Remi presses up against the entirety of the cavern, leaving Ronin and Deimos hardly any room to maneuver past the entrance they've come through. Hopefully that doesn't become a problem.

Deimos' life drain strikes the creature, making it wilt momentarily in Remi's grip. Quickly it rallies, thrashing against the kraken and managing to slip free of his tentacled-grip. Again the creature turns and tries to attack the Lullaby but misses.

and on to the glory at my right hand
They get off to a good start, and Ronin is heartened to see that he and Deimos are capable of at least damaging their opponent - a big fucking snake, gods - but it quickly goes downhill. At least from the Huntsman's point of view; he doesn't think he has ever seen anything slip out of Remi's grip when he wants to hold them still, and so this is new territory for everyone involved. Shit, this thing's slippery. No idea what it is, sorry Deimos - but shall we try again?

With the whole pinning it down and ruining its day thing, he means, because just because it didn't work the first time, doesn't mean it won't the second. And if Remi still can't hold it at that point? It's time to change tactic.

So saying, Ronin tries to press himself against the walls of the cavern (chance would be a fine thing), conjuring three more starbolts to fling at the basilisk.

Ronin suggests a rinse and repeat approach to see if Remi can hold it this time, and conjures three more starbolts to attack the basilisk. He keeps his Dazzle engaged so they can see.

REMI
then it went dark
No, most things do not escape him. Remi's frustration hardens and turns inward as his tentacles lash out again. This time he doesn't try to merely restrain the snake's head, but all of it. With three tentacles around its neck, two lower down, and another three where he judges the bulk of its lower-body strength comes from, the Lullaby bears down with all the strength he possess and tries to compact the basilisk as much as possible to reduce whatever flailing power it might have.

I do not care if you hit me, he says with surprise neutrality given the way his tentacles twist. The comment was directed more toward Deimos, if only because Ronin would know his stance on friendly fire, and was really the only one who needed to be aware of Remi's physical state.

Remi tries to grapple again, but this time tries to grapple in three places instead of one.

Hits and then not – surprised, momentarily, as they were continually backed into the entryway, pressed against the wall while Remi’s efforts were to be in vain. The permission to siege upon the Lullaby was a stance Deimos didn’t normally take, and a slight snort flickered through the bond. I will still try not to by way of admittance.

And without knowing what the snake was, there couldn’t be any other preparations made at the moment. Instead, the fire away tactic seemed to be in the current rally and volley, so he made do with the previous intervals. Power for power, might for might, and the Life Drain efforts sunk in again, striving for the creature, and not the kraken.

--

Deimos uses his Mastered Life Drain again to attack the basilisk, and hopefully avoid Remi.

Rinse and repeat, sure, sure.

So far, it all goes as it had before. Starbolts fly out shattering away more scales, tentacles grapple the basilisk (in three places this time rather than one), and dark magic slinks out and hits the basilisk...and Remi.

So, almost exactly the same as the first time, only not at all.

More change to follow, as the snake tries to wriggle out of not one, but three points of pressure on its body. Unsuccessful at every point of contact, the basilisk is left to hiss in dramatic fury in the kraken's strong grip.

That's more like it. Ronin's surge of adrenaline is almost palpable through the Attuned bond, and he smiles wickedly to see the basilisk so expertly wrangled by his husband. If it gets too much, you let go, he sends to his husband, accompanying it with every bit of love and earnestness that he can scrape together. He will not see Remi die as a result of his actions. He has already toed too close to that line once.

But with the parameters established, Ronin keeps himself flush against the wall and draws, once again, on the shooting stars that vibrate through his blood. Giving a non-verbal nod of approval to Deimos, he unleashes three bolts once more, doing his best to aim for the places where the kraken isn't. How lucky he is remains to be seen.

Ronin continues with his Dazzle and unleashes another three starbolts, trying his best not to hit Remi.

REMI
then it went dark
In the dark waters of Remi's mind, he's able to note just how different Deimos's lifedrain magic feels compared to Ronin's starbolts. It's like the difference between drinking poison, and being sliced open and having lemon juice poured on your wounds.

Ow. He grumbles companionably, which is just to say, he's perfectly alright.

With shaking tentacles and an unhappy pulse of annoyance, Remi begins to pull and bend, as if he might be able to snap the basilisk apart at the pressure points he's trying to create.

Remi maintains his grappled and tries to break the snake.
