They have a few more people than accounted for, which means that despite it being LongNight, food runs out a smidge quicker than it otherwise would have. It isn’t an issue, not really, and todays just one of those days (he thinks it’s sometime in the mid afternoon though it’s hard to tell with the days of pitch black) where they don’t have much going on. So Sunjata’s slunk out from home, flown toward Mourn because he knows that there’s a few rogue cows and goats that drift through the meadows, and what’s better than bringing back a decent haul?

It’s certainly cold enough to keep everything chilled before they have a chance to break it up. It’s an almost suffocating sort of dark, but Sunjata drifts through row after row of the fields, not wishing to take up a lot of space or ruin most of the meat (otherwise he’d simply stay in his dragon shift). No, this time Sunjata remains as himself, a sleek black bow between his hands and arrows strapped to his back, eyes partially shifted so that he can at least see some movement.

He’s as silent as can be as he drifts through the grasses, and the second he spots a slight crowned head of a goat, the bow is lifted and an arrow is shot.

His arrow gets there before Loki does, and even though she recognizes the Flood, she can’t hold back a reptilian scream of frustration as he takes what would have been… oh, two meals for her?

She dives for his head but pulls up with plenty of room to spare, never truly intending to hit him. That would be mean. Loki isn’t mean. Loki likes Haai, and by extension, she likes Sunjata. Another cry echoes in the darkness as she calls for her friend, calling her out of wherever she’s (obviously) hiding. Wessex traipses on behind her companion, materializing out of the heavy, inky darkness like, well… a Wraith. Shocker.

“Nice shot.” she offers, calm and quiet. “Fancy meeting you out here.” The truth is that she has no idea where Nate and Sunjata live these days, only that they're not in Torchline anymore.

The shot is a good one, bringing down the goat just about the time Sunjata hears the rage of the smaller dragon — hard to see in this endless night. Brows pinch and he’s careful as he steps forward, only to be dove upon by the small dragon in what appears to be a fuck you. Which honestly? Fair enough. And it gives him time to recognize the dragon.

It also gives him time to hear the way the dragon calls out for her friend, a friend that isn’t coming. A friend that wouldn’t be coming back. He’s just about to tell her that (one of his new fangle perks of Attunement), when Wessex appears beside him seemingly out of thin air and he lowers the bow as he nods a tired greeting to her, feeling the fresh wound of Haai yet again despite his attempts to snuff it out. “Thanks Wessex.” He greets her quietly, moving to slide the bow onto his back, the Draconic slit steel of his gaze scans her briefly before looking into the dark for the dragon. “Not too far from home actually.” He supposes if she did want to stumble across them, King’s End would be the prime choice.

But there’s a pang deep within him that stops him in his tracks as he turns to face Wessex, a seriousness crossing his face that tugs at the scar to his cheek. “Hey, uh, can you bring Loki back? I’ve got to tell her that she’s not going to find Haai.” He doesn’t remember or know of Wessex knows, but, he needs to tell them now otherwise the pain of her searching for the griffin would send him over the edge more than it already had.

First of all, let us not forget that Wessex now smells very much like a sweet, fresh pine tree. Or if Sunjata can’t pinpoint the source, that at least the smell is overwhelming, despite this area very much lacking pine trees.

“Really?” she replies, fruitlessly looking past him into the darkness, as if it might literally be seen in the background. “Nate never mentioned where you moved to.” Biting back the obvious question, she tries to let Sunjata have the space to decide whether or not he’d like her to know where they live. And unsure of whether or not he might want her company, she’s ready to keep moving through King’s End when he mentions Loki again.

It’s an odd phrasing. And she doesn’t pick up on it right off the bat. “Oh. Uh, sure. I mean I can tell her…” Because obviously the Flood can talk to her companion, but the understanding would be greater if it came from Wessex. Still, she lifts her head to the sky and is quiet for a moment while the Deepfrost wind starts to play with loose tendrils of her hair. Out of the soulful night floats the dragon - who is not so little anymore - too big to perch on her shoulder any more. Instead, she lands at their feet and chirps up at the two humans.

The writer certainly has forgotten Wessex smells like wintergreen, and as soon as Sunjata gets close enough to Wessex to notice that it’s her sparking the smell, his nose twitches a fraction in curiosity. He’d never recalled her smelling like that, but he doesn’t quite ask about it given her whole… Senses thing. Maybe she hasn’t noticed, would it be rude for him to point it out?

Speaking of, her nose is quite red.

But conversation of his home and the sorrowful pang of Haai’s void left behind keep him from asking. “We moved to King’s End.” Which was all around them. Sunjata doesn’t know who all Nate wants to know, but imagines it likely would be better coming from Nate regardless. As for the news of Haai? It tampers down his thoughts on much else, focusing on anything else but watching Wessex call the dragon down. “You could probably explain it better but I can talk to animals and companions now so I figured I’d give it a try.” He hadn’t tried it much before – not aside from the quiet complaints from Pemota every day. And part of him seems to think it might sound better coming from him regardless.

As it were, though, the dragon chirps up at them and Sunjata works his jaw hard enough that despite the light being next to nonexistent, it’s likely both dragon and Ascended would be able to see the way the muscles move within it. He kneels down on one knee, a bit more up to Loki’s space and height as he takes a long slow breath. Hey Loki. He pauses, trying to figure out the words to say. Haai isn’t around anymore. She… Passed away. Nate and I buried her here and if you want to visit her grave I can show Wessex and you where it is. The dragon could either tell Sunjata yes or no or contemplate it with Wessex – but given that the demigod doesn’t have Attuned speech, doesn’t know what Sunjata’s said, his slit steel gaze flicks up to scan Wessex’s face.

Haai’s dead.” His voice is a bit rougher here as he moves to stand again, turning back to the goat to hack off the leg to give to Loki. “I offered to show her and you the grave if its something she wants to do.

Oh, yeah, sure.” Whatever needs to be said is probably better from the horse’s mouth anyway. It isn’t until the Flood tenses and grinds his teeth so hard she thinks they might crack, that the Wraith really picks up on something being wrong. But when she does, the extra tension makes her think that whatever is upsetting Sunjata isn’t just him being his regular, broody self.

Even when he brings himself down to the ground, he towers above Loki. Loki, perhaps a bit more attuned to body language than her human counterpart, raises up on her hind legs and places on clawed foot on Sunjata’s knee. What she hears is a bit more direct and after a moment, she seems to wilt. Her wings droop down to the ground and her head snakes forward, first toward the companion-less man and then towards her soulmate. Haai gone? She echoes back. Haai dead?

Loki is no stranger to death, even if it’s second-hand and through the grief of her bonded. She knows what it means, and she knows she will never see Haai again.

Wessex can feel her sadness almost as Sunjata tells her what was said. The two of them combined - they hit her with something that would have taken the breath out of her if she’d needed to breathe. To lose a part of one’s self. Goddess, she doesn’t know now what she’d do without Loki and the thought itself brings her to stillness. “I’m so sorry,” she offers gently, reaching out to lay a hand on Sunjata’s shoulder in what she hopes is comfort.

But the dragon is wise and she noses against Sunjata too, also knowing distress when she sees it. Haai fly, she offers in her infinite, child-like wisdom. Haai fly high always.

He hopes he gets the point across – a memory hitting him of the brief conversations he’d had with Haai before she’d passed when he’d gained the ability to, how it was almost childlike in a sense, and so he’s careful as he picks his words to try and make it so she’ll understand. He’s still tall and as she presses a clawed foot to his knee to raise herself a bit higher, he finds some amount of bolstering to his emotions to help explain it.

Of course, it doesn’t help when Loki responds, the childlike question, the gone and the dead hitting him like a bag of bricks, and he’s lucky he doesn’t have to talk audibly to the dragon because he doesn’t think with how tight his throat has grown that he’ll be able to say anything else other than what he’d told Wessex. Yes. I’m sorry. He sends over instead, working his jaw again, nostrils flaring as he tries to even out his breathing.

Sunjata hates tears, conditioned to believe that it made him appear weak. He has a hard enough time letting them go in his own company, let alone others, so he doesn’t look up at Wessex when she offers her condolences, the hand at his shoulder a comfort for him despite how shaky his and the demigod’s relationship was. Instead he simply ducks his head with a nod because he can’t speak. And when Loki noses her head in, Sunjata takes a shuddering breath as quietly as he can. Always. He tells Loki, though his voice is hoarse and stricken with his grief, and he manages to lift a hand to rub at his eyes as if he’s trying to get to the root of the tears that brim his steel gaze.

He recovers enough to run the same hand through his hair. “I’m sorry too.” He admits to Wessex, throat tight as he focuses on the body of the goat he’d taken down.

Despite Loki’s insistence that Haai will always be in the skies for her, there is still a sense of loss in the dragon. She nudges whatever bit of Jata is closest with her nose and then sinks back down to the ground again, declaring simply, Sad. Sad Jata. Sad Loki. Sad mine. Looking up at her bonded, she slinks over to the demigoddess and curls up at the woman’s feet. Her companion’s sadness, Sunjata’s tone and pointed focus, and her own musing on what life might be like if she lost Loki leave Wessex firmly in the ranks of the sad group too, mourning yet another good part of the world that’s been lost.

She doesn’t ask any more questions of the Flood. Something like this… it can’t be cured by talking about it. It doesn’t need to be cured. It just has to be worked through and Sunjata just needs to be functional.

Squeezing his shoulder again (despite their often-rocky relationship, it’s easy to muster compassion for this kind of thing), Wessex then reaches down to gather Loki in her arms and together, they turn towards the goat. Still dead. Still lying there.

The offer of visiting the grave doesn’t seem to be something Loki wants to do (if she even understands what a grave is - and the Wraith isn’t so sure if would be of any interest), so she moves on.

“Looks like you’ll be feasting on goat for awhile. Want some help preparing it, or…?”

Or should she just let him go on his way?

Luckily she doesn’t push it, luckily Loki doesn’t push it further and it gives him time to swallow down around the tightness in his throat again, until he has a chance to loosen it up so he might be able to speak and to clear up those little pools of weakness that glimmer in his gaze – thankful that it’s LongNight, even if he knows that Wessex would be able to see it regardless.

She doesn’t comment on it, and it’s truthfully a boon given everything. Their attention flickers to the goat and Sunjata moves to grab the leg that he’d hacked off to give it back to Loki. “Help would be nice.” He murmurs softly, not particularly wanting to be alone right now and thankful for the company that doesn’t want to press the wound further.

Just trying to keep up our stock for the rest of LongNight.” She’d know that Nate wasn’t really eating any of it, but they did have guests and they certainly did need to eat. Besides, it wasn’t like anyone minded – as far as Sunjata knew, Nate really enjoyed being able to cook for so many, a little boon of domesticity before everything hit the fan. “How’s your LongNight been so far? Grounds quiet?” He asks as he starts to carve into the goat.

“I’ll start at this end,” she says, turning towards the hindquarters of the goat (which wasn’t terribly large to begin with) and reaching for a boot-knife. “Save the guts for Loki?” she asks while eyeing the haunches and feeling out the joint and where best to cut. The little dragon should have some kind of consolation, she thinks, the lingering echoes of sadness still coming in waves down the line.

“Mostly. There was an odd Firling - you remember the happy little tree things? - that got into the Temple right at the beginning. It definitely didn’t seem jolly, maybe even downright possessed by something. But it shot something at me and now I fucking smell like wintergreen. Rolling her eyes in the dark, the fact that she’s still incredulous about this is obvious. “Even I can smell it.” Snorting in emphasis, she finds her hands wet now with the blood of the goat as her knife slips into the still-warm flesh and begins to disembowel it.

She can have all of them.” Sunjata murmurs – because it wasn’t like Haai was around to take them, nor Fangorn who often enjoyed the blood from a kill. And Pemota? Well, she was a star whale, and as far as Sunjata knew, guts and blood wasn’t in the creature’s diet plan. So he gets to work on the upper half, ensuring that he contains the guts just enough to get it in a nice little package for Loki to enjoy later.

Perhaps a small amount of an apology given the shitty news the poor dragonling had heard today.

His eyes are still ringed red but at least they don’t burn, and the more he works with his hands the less he has to think about the knot in his throat. So much so, that when Wessex comments that about the Firling, he hums an acknowledgement toward the strange little trees – before she mentions her wintergreen scent and Sunjata manages to hum a small laugh. “Smells good at least.” He pauses, lifting his gaze to peer at Wessex through the dark. “Maybe I drink too much because my thought was immediately gin rather than trees.” He’s not wrong.

He manages to work part of the goat into sections, easier to be tied together for transport when her next question comes and he speaks while he works, keeping his mind off of everything else. “Mostly uneventful. Something threw a snowball at Nate but it missed. Aside from that? The best LongNight I’ve had since I landed here.” Probably his best winter season of all time, if he’s being honest. “And yeah, he got it. I heard about it. I’m sorry it’s come to this.” There's every ounce of genuine apology that leaves Sunjata, upset as well at the reasons and the cost of it all.

“True,” Wessex admits with a chuckle. “Better than smelling like shit.” And as for whether or not the Flood drinks too much, she can’t say anything other than, “Being in the booze business will do that too you.” But of course that could refer to either part - associating wintergreen with gin or drinking too much.

Separating out the heart, liver, and kidneys - all of which are edible or make good bone stock - from the offal, she takes the Loki-package and sets it aside, cleaning out the rest of the inner cavity so it isn’t dripping blood and bits on the way back home. Beginning to clean her tools on the grass when Jata speaks again, she has to agree with him. “Agreed. The best LongNight of my life. I just wish more of us were alive to see it.” Much like when the Wraith spoke about the loss she’d experienced in the bubble, there’s a barely-contained sorrow that threatens to spill over; she isn’t just speaking about Naturals - but the friends they’d made and lost along the way.

The last day or so was truly a time of quiet reflection for her, and the cost of everything - still weighs heavy against her heart. “Me too.” Because Goddess knows she’s mostly the one responsible for antagonizing the Greatwood - at least in the beginning. Everything else is… well, not so much her fault. As a General, she is trying to keep the peace until they’re better prepared. “Tell him if he wants to store up a teleport just in case - I’m only a thought away.” Which is her way of accepting the apology and choosing not to hold his ties to Safrin against him in that moment.

Mm, well, I’m not in it as much as I once was.” He comments offhandedly – his expanse of entrepreneuring guilds, posed as boxing rings and bars weren’t quite under his hold as much anymore. But it doesn’t mean he still doesn’t have the heart for it. In fact, it helps to think about it rather than the conversation they’d just had. “Maybe I should go back into it.” Alcohol certainly helped to fill the void that was his companion, but responsibilities as a father kept him from indulging as much as he wishes he could.

They make their cuts and separate it all out and Sunjata’s prepared to load it up into the bags he’d brought – saddlebag-like so that he could either carry it back in his dragon shift or to loop it around himself somehow for his Pegasus shift (though having Wessex here helps the second thought form in his mind). Regardless, the Flood hums a quiet agreement about LongNight, a twitch of a frown crossing his face that mimics her own.

As it stands, however, Sunjata means every word of his apology of what the Greatwood is doing to the Ascended. And the fact he feels stuck in the middle of both – one foot in the Old Gods favor and the other willingly slipping over toward the New Gods, it’s another tangled feeling that sparks in his chest. He finishes tying up the bags and rises to his full height, gaze lifting to Wessex again. “Thank you Wessex. I’ll let him know.” He offers her a small smile, one torn between the freshly opened wound of grief.

But he sucks in a deep breath, rolls his shoulders. “Well, I should get this back for Nate to help me separate it out more.” He says a bit offhandedly, skin flaring with the scales of his dragon shift. “Hope your LongNight stays calm.” He’s sure that they’d be in touch if something didn’t go smoothly. And with that departure given, Sunjata steps away to create some space to shift into his full dragon shift, sending a pulse of his goodbye to Loki and a nod to Wessex, before he scoops up the bag of what he’s bringing back between his jaws and takes to the sky to head home.
