Carnivals and springtime always reminded Melita of Fiat Lux. The memories were both good and bad and in between, and perhaps it was a shame the events had ever been tarnished at all. But with spring came a vivid resurgence, and the wild-hearted youth craved to put her best foot forward. No woes. No regrets. No spurn of damnation in the back of her mind.

So perhaps she could help decorate. Together with Fangorn, they skipped and frolicked down the lane of the market, snagging at some beautiful-hued pennants. Surely they could be hung along the city lines, amongst and amidst the hustle and bustle of people? Convey brighter spirits, brighter times, brighter nuances, before everything else crumbled and fell apart?

Renewed with her emboldened spirit, her fingers twined around a few pinks, blues, and reds, before clambering along a ladder, and gesturing downward to Fangorn. “Don’t let them get tangled,” as the vines of the gourd swept around and along, striving to prevent it.

A great deal of tension thawed with the sunrise, leaving Azure's shoulders and thickening the air with doubt. Beyond the bonfires and drunken laughter, across leagues of wilderness, in the lair of the beast was what was left of her family. Were they safe? If not it is surely her fault. Still, she didn't dare step foot in the Grounds. The very thought nauseated her.

Instead of twiddling her thumbs and occupying herself with thoughts of doom, she flew out into the market. Perching herself above the bustling crowd, she watched people flow between the stalls, and listened. News flowed in through the portal, spreading through the market, unbridled.

She quickly grew frustrated. Nothing she heard could pull away her doubt. Nothing but a trip to a cursed place. Reaching the Sanctuary would take a few minutes, the trip to her aunt's farm a little over an hour.

It was amidst these thoughts that something peculiar caught her eye. An unusually festive gourd gripping in its vines, not an unsuspecting victim, but a stream of pennants. Above it, standing atop a ladder and wrestling the decorations from above, a bright-maned girl.

Getting distracted was terribly easy when your mind desperately sought it.

Azure fluttered across the busy street and shifted out of her bird form, appearing on a terrace just above the pair. Quickly regaining her balance, she crossed her feet and leaned over to ask, "Need help with that?". Normally, she'd make a comment on the struggle and offer to place a bet on the pennants' ultimate triumph, but she stopped herself when a sickeningly sweet sensation bubbled inside her at the thought, threatening to spill into words.

you must burn brighter than ever
Unaware of the bird turned girl’s abilities, and heavily distracted by her own ministrations with the bunting collecting and folding in on itself, Melita scarcely noticed anything. But at the voice, there was only a slight tilt to her head, gilded eyes conforming to where the sound had taken place and shape. As an individual used to hanging out in trees, pressed against branches at all hours, a thunderous, wild, untamed heathen-like thing, it was with little surprise that she found another above her. Not unlike a canopy, save for a roof instead of fronds, she tilted her head at the stranger, smiling vaguely. “If you’d like,” and without hesitation she lifted the pattern of colors, hues, and little flags towards the youth.

Which freed up Fangorn considerably, as the poor little beast unwound his vines and haphazardly strived. He made a few grumbling gestures, which could’ve signified anything, and she gave a light laugh. Addressing the roof-walker, she continued to maneuver portions and pieces away from one another, untangling and unraveling. “I haven’t seen you around before. I’m Melita.”

As Azure reached down to accept the task there was slight hesitation, a faltering in the gesture that revealed some surprise. A delay to the smile that came, tugged by a playful feeling rising in her chest at the thought of being recognized by another. She pulled on the lines, finding them tangled and huffing when force did nothing to free them.

Strangers usually weren't so blasé about the sudden appearance of voices speaking to them from above. The people around Azure would, after some time, get used to her tendency of appearing at odd angles and altitudes, as she took every opportunity to do so from the moment she attuned. This girl was something else, though. Perhaps she possessed the power of premonition?

Then there was the grumbling creature below. It brought on the same feelings that were commonly caused by big dogs when they tripped over themselves and lizards in tiny hats. Something made to grab at your ankles and gnaw on your toes grumpily disentangling itself from a curtain of soft, cheery colors. "Is the pumpkin a companion?", her eyes followed the creature's movements while her fingers crudely tied several ropes of pennants to a balcony post before they began to scratch at a newly discovered knot, "It's strangely adorable. Like if brass knuckles had a personality."

Feeling the knot loosen, she combed through the bundle in her hands, taking the time to run the fabric though her fingers. "What were your plans with this?".

Melita wasn’t a delicate thing; and therefore didn’t handle her wares as such either. Wrinkling her nose in obvious distaste at the way the banners still clung and tangled, she worked along the bounds and coils, heaving a sigh when some had managed to intertwine themselves amongst one another with relish. Fangorn grumbled and rumbled one more incoherent facet – but likely it was borne of frustration too.

Her head tilted upwards, tongue sticking out as she worked and grappled with one particular bunting twisted upside down, as the stranger asked about her gourd. He was always a curious topic amongst strangers – especially those who hadn’t been amidst the Grounds or amongst the many who wandered during Leafchange’s intervals. A faint smile bloomed at the discussion, at the inquiry, attention only drifting momentarily down to the youth as he drifted below the ladder, vines working to straighten the rest of the string. “He is. His name is Fangorn. A vampire gourd.” In response, the pumpkin showed his fangs out of principle – though there was no malice or menace behind it. In a low whisper, as if telling some enormous secret, Melita hummed. “I found him during Leafchange a couple years ago. Gave him a little bit of meat and that was that.”

And she rather liked the notion of him being like brass knuckles – as wild as her.

Though the other girl didn’t give a name, perhaps hesitant, perhaps distrusting, the youth carried on in her fire and boldness. “I thought it might suit the market. The whole carnival thing and all that.” Something fun and amusing, bright and alluring, rather than dark and damning. “What were you doing up here?” And she lifted her chin, jutting it forward, clearly indicating the roof.

Fiddling fingers and pulling strings, to an onlooker Azure appeared to be haphazardly playing with the decorations. Maybe there was order to be found in the rhythmic way she wrestled the ropes as if they were both sentient and fighting back. Time would tell.

She grinned back at the pumpkin, showing off her own teeth. Fangorn's were admittedly more impressive, and far easier to appreciate from afar than they would be from level ground. "You saw his grin and figured he needed more meat in his diet?", she joked, giving the fiery girl a nudge.

Azure nodded as Melita explained her intentions, as it brought her attention back to a bundle of pennant strings. She took it apart, wrapping about half around her leg and proceeding to pick through the rest. "I was clearing my head. Looking for a distraction. That's you."

Satisfied with her work, she draped the remaining pennants around her shoulders like a shawl. "I'm Azure, by the way," she added, her curiosity provisionally sated and her thoughts roaming into another direction. She looked over her shoulder, past her colorful plumage and up the street. "You know...", she turned back to Melita with a mirthful glint in her eyes. "We could just roll all of this into a big ball and roll it down main street. That'd be festive," she claimed mischievously.

Melita’s gaze went back to Fangorn and his rows of teeth, completely unbothered by the display. “How else does one lure a meat-eating pumpkin?” And she laughed, shrugging her shoulders, and bending down to snag at more of the pennants, figuring by now they’d have managed to find some better method. That she was a distraction, as Melita often divulged into similar factions and fashions, caused a brief laugh. Suitably flattered, she resumed her digging and rifling around. “Pleased to meet you, Azure.”

The spark of mischief though, the glint of devilry, were all tell-tale signs of a new fire-forged friend. The honeybee liked a great many things, and any sentiment with the barest hints of foolishness, ridiculous motions, or fiendish thoughts was given its due diligence. Her head snapped upwards, a Cheshire grin forming along her mouth, as the plan, notion, and idea suddenly came forward. “I like the way you think.” Her eyes darted back to some other remains of pennants in the box, sneaky, diverting. “Let’s try this one first.”

She collected a smaller section not tied off to the greater expanse, fingers fumbling around the adornments with relish. Eventually they were tied off neatly, into a ball, there in her palm, waiting to be sent down the square. Within half a moment, she’d done exactly that, reeling her hand back and then releasing the fixture in all its glory – watching as it bounded down the bazaar and into several patrons.

I like the way you think. She didn't hear that often.

With a childlike grin Azure watched Melita put words into action. Her lack of hesitation at the opportunity for mischief tugged at a special string in Azure's chest. Soon, she was also at work, untying the bundle from the terrace and wrestling the ropes with ardor. She stopped to watch Melita's creation fall to the street below, chucklling as it found its targets. Confusion, commotion and raised voices, all bright and colorful.

"Nice!" She pulled on a stray rope, tying it into the ball in her lap. Satiafied, she bounced it in her hands, "Now watch this," having gotten a feel of its weight, Azure threw it onto the street below and watched it roll. Just as the grumblings of their first victims were beginning to taper off, it collided with a group of merchants, draped in rich garb too intricately worn to favor comfort over status. They didn't seem to share in the festive spirit.

Easily spotting the beastly gourd entangled in pennants on the street below the two girls, the outraged tradesmen directed their ire at Fangorn, the only innocent and most conspicous member of the group.

The honeybee couldn’t bother to contain her glee, her laughter, her rampant mischief as Azure’s antics ensued. She considered it far more successful than her own attempts, and clutched her stomach as the rope rolled, unfurling into several of the richer merchants, ribs and side hurting from the inevitable volley of giggles. Rubbing at her eyes, she hadn’t even noticed the direction of their ire (expecting it, inevitably, upon them) pinpointed solely on poor beloved Fangorn.

Or not so, based on the reactions.

The vampire gourd blanched and growled as the townsfolk began their outcry in earnest, and Melita shook her head. “Dumb bastards,” she whispered, a snarky grace to her poise as she snagged at another set of pennants. Rolling them into another neat ball, this time she ensured the ends were tucked within, solidifying it instead of threatening the unraveling. “All right, let’s see what this can do,” she arched her brow and twisted the sinister grin towards Azure. A challenge, maybe. The youth was all about provocation, goading, and emboldened ventures in any form.

So before the maddening rush descended upon her companion, Melita chucked the ball directly at them, aiming, intending, to hit them squarely in the head, neck, or shoulders.

Fangorn's riposte fanned the fire on the street below and Azure felt Melita's contagious joviality overtake her, letting a clear, honest laugh burst through. As far as distractions go, this one was exceeding expectations. The task at hand required all her attention, the angry merchants were approaching and there were strings of pennants still unused, hanging innocently, their potential for mayhem woefully unused.

Azure was at work, tangling ropes in broad motions, a mess of decorations wrapped around her arms, elbows and a foot. But it all started to come together with a few select tugs and pulls, just as she caught a glint of challenge in Melita's expression and followed the decorative cannonball's trajectory towards the group.

She didn't see exactly how it hit, but the result was difficult to miss. One of the merchants had clearly taken the brunt of the blow. The tall, spindly woman gradually, slowly arched backwards, like a tree pulled by the wind, before finally losing balance and toppling over. The group began to scramble between picking her up off the ground and dealing with the source of the festively themed bombardment. Azure couldn't stem the current of giggles bubbling up from within.

Words were difficult to articulate amid the laughter, but when she met Melita's gaze, the Attuned girl's expression spoke of how impressed she was, turning her focus to the market next. She silently accepted the unspoken challenge and sought a worthy target. There wasn't much time, as the confusion Melita had caused wouldn't last. "Alright then..." She saw a lot of inconspicuous bystanders, an old woman milling slowly past the commotion, a couple of nagging vendors voicing their displeasure and... A stack of boxes walking into the scene unaware. "There it is."

The burly man behind the tall stack had noticed the commotion but not its nature, his line of sight almost entirely obstructed and his focus firmly on the task at hand, eager to be rid of his burden.

Azure took her aim and threw her new creation, bigger and messier than the last, in a big arch toward the courier. It felt like unpacking a present, waiting to find out what would spill out of the boxes.

The snicker never quite strayed – just enough for her gaze to pinpoint on Fangorn as the tough little gourd stretched out his vines and he began climbing up towards them of his own accord. A survivor through and through, clever and resourceful enough to fend for himself while the girls took on the distracted and irritated merchants. They certainly bought him enough time for the scaling to begin.

Then Melita gathered another ball of pennants, winding them along her hand, ensuring the bundle was taut and sturdy, pausing momentarily to watch Azure’s ministrations unfold. She’d found the perfect target – there was no way the man would be able to see from the sheer amount of things in his hands, stacked well and efficiently, but not for dive-bombing, mischievous shitheads. The arc was glorious – and the honeybee’s mouth dropped open in a pre-emptive cackle, as it hit and sent the boxes crashing down, down, down around the market. “Very nice,” she crowed towards her conspirator, incapable of muffling the song of laughter all over again.

The boxes revealed themselves in a crashing display as a fresh set of crabs. They scuttled back and forth, nipping at others in the square, while some scrambled trying to get them back into the containers, or out of the crossfire. Yelling, hooting, and hollering ensued all the more, though some semblances were panicked and others were justified. It was pure chaos. Melita loved every moment of it.

“My turn again?” She encouraged further antics with another Cheshire grin, pulling back her arm, and throwing the newfound ball, spinning merrily in its brilliant array of colors, towards the top of a vendor’s cart, hoping to upend anything they had stored.

The dark haired girl doubled over laughing, almost losing her balance atop her tall perch. Just as she would come to the brink of regaining her composure, she'd look down upon the street again and burst out laughing once more, voice ringing out over the commotion.

Crabs. It was brilliant.

When the question was posed Azure answered without hesitation, struggling with her giggles for a full breath of air. "Please! By the gods, do it!" And the ball was already in the air, joining the wonderful mess. It looked like it would only graze the stacks of small, delicate boxes that filled the cart. Then, as if guided by a mischievous spirit, it hit the stack at just the right angle, crashing amid the wares and sending a cloud of color up into the air. The vendor's collection of pigments and dyes appeared to blow up in colorful smoke.

Now there was no escaping it. The market was in an uproar.

"I think we've decorated it." The songbird turned to Melita, mirth glowing in auburn eyes. She caught sight of Fangorn, a vine's throw away from the safety of the rooftop. Azure put a foot up on the terrace railing and prepared to push off. With a grin, she took off her pennant shawl and separated its threads. She threw them freely onto the street, one by one, like a performer throwing roses back at an adoring audience. "I think we've done what we can for the people, don't you?"

Satisfied, she chuckled and turned back to her partner in crime. "There's a low roof you two can scale down from." She spoke over the noise of the street and nodded northward, where vibrant buildings wound deeper into the city. "You just have to make it across to the roof of that yellow house, and then go right across the terrace. You'll see it from there." Glancing down at their festival decorations, she saw that someone had pointed them out to the large courier. "Can you make it?"

“I’d say we’ve done excellently,” she preened, proud and wicked from atop their rooftop domicile, surveying the bedlam below. A sort of vicious satisfaction rose up over her features – domineering and ridiculous, exactly as nature had intended her to be. Fangorn joined her at her ankles, and for a few more moments, they merely watched everything unfold in fathoms of disorder, mayhem, and disarray, the way of the world fixated in true Torchline form.

Her head jerked upwards at the instructions, the grin firmly in place. “No problem.” Because it wouldn’t be – not for the youth who’d taken to scaling trees and roofs at a tender young age. “Thank you again. Let me know if you ever want to do anymore decorating,” and she giggled merrily, thoroughly amused, snagging at Fangorn, before hopping off, as if no one along the tops of the domiciles had done anything wrong.
