DEIMOS

In between the plottings, the musings, the rampant decree of more relic hunting, scorching, and searching, the Sword turned toward the sea. Away from it for months, due to his own poor decisions, the fresh, sea-salt air, the rolling waves, beckoned and chased and encouraged – until more than just memories and past lives washed over.

While Belial took to a lookout spot along an outcropping of rocks, and Zuriel nestled herself on the warm sands, he plunged into the ocean, content to dive in amongst the fish, to contort and unravel muscles and power in simplicity. Manifestations of what used to be – but not the proportions that would eat and devour him inside; so the pulse of any Attuned adornments, any semblance, any sense of emotion, were awe and peace, a moment of repose.

And then, because of curiosity, because of inquiry, because sometimes he just wondered what it would be like to push himself to the limit, he took one giant gulp of air, and dove. A descent into the mass of blue, into bright, blinding hues blending into the spring sun, into fish and shimmering scales. He could’ve easily shifted into his seal bombardments, but for once the compelling nature of his soul didn’t counteract into such displays. Instead, it was his magic woven straight into his lungs; for they didn’t burn with the need for oxygen. The air curled there, and allowed him to continue pursuing down, down, down.

Another day, another adventure. At least that was Chrys’ outlook on life. Of course she could’ve done something productive instead, like the others always told her to. But that would be way too boring. Instead, she headed on towards the coast. Maybe she could find some interesting things the mouth-breathers lost in the sea. Or even meet one of them.

As she saw someone on her way up, she thought it was another one of the merfolk at first glance. It was only as she looked a bit closer that she realised he had legs. Her curiosity piqued, she started to head over to him. Hello she called out telepathically once she was close enough to him, wondering if there would be an answer. She knew that at least some of the mouth-breathers were able to converse with her like this. But just in case he wasn’t able to, she stopped somewhat near him, swaying a bit from side to side, unable to stay still due to her excitement.

DEIMOS

The air flowed in and out; rhythmical, unbothered, tethered to the pulsating breadth of his abilities. So his muscles churned, his legs kicked, and the serenity varnished over. It’d been a long, long while since such repose persisted through his heart, bones, or mind, soul restless with every other interval screeching and screaming his way. The sea was a void, but a pleasant one. He had no need to escape it.

Immersed in diving headlong to the bottom, to where pressure didn’t cast him off or away, relinquish him into its depths, he hadn’t noticed the city rising from the line of blending blue, or the individual closing in on him. Later on, the Sword might have lamented the tranquility had taken over his residual, persistent scrutiny, but it didn’t matter when a voice persisted through his mind.

Unexpected, especially around here, the soldier ceased his movements altogether – floating for a moment, before his gaze centered on a mermaid. Which was what she had to be – given the location, and animal (jellyfish?) adornments. Surprise flickered through his features, and if he weren’t underwater his jaw might’ve dropped out of shock. Instead, it altered into a blend of arched brows and further Attuned sentiments, casting the snort he thought of emitting elsewhere – gone, gone, gone. Hello. Uncertain of what else to say, as this had been the first time he’d ever seen any ocean-dweller, he tilted his head a fraction, and resumed some semblance of swimming. Who are you?

Upon noticing the startled expression of the man, Chrys couldn't help but be a bit amused. Of course she did not mean to startle him. But at the same time she liked to surprise people for fun, so she didn't mind doing it by accident either. I'm Chrys. Nice to meet you. Something like a chuckle seemed to accompany her words, subtle yet clearly noticeable.

As she said this, she bowed a little bit forward, taking two edges of the umbrella around her hips in her hand and lifting it slightly. It seemed very much like she was trying to curtsy, slightly lifting the umbrella like one would do with a skirt.

A moment later she was already looking at him again, an inquisitive expression on her face. And who are you?

DEIMOS

He stifled the irritation suddenly lurking up his spine at being the result of a joke – but realized quickly he’d done the same thing to his closest friends many a time. And most of it had been out of sheer amusement and devilry; so perhaps, for once, his form could be the taunted. Releasing the influx of emotion with a subtle smirk, there was an inward snort at her joviality, before maneuvering further, deeper down, into murkier quandaries, all the more curious.

The soldier didn’t miss her slight bow or curtsy motion though, and that did gain a chuckle through Attuned measures. It could echo there, rather than throughout the water, considering he was still maintaining his air incantations, permitting him to drift in and out without circumstance. Realizing at her inquiry that he hadn’t completed introductions on his end, he nodded, skimming over rock and coral. Deimos.

There was another pause as machinations coiled along his mind, and reality scorched again – pondering if he had been doing something unjustified, given the surroundings. Am I disturbing your home? As much as he relished the sea, had been born beside another long, long ago, maybe others weren’t so content in having their terrain explored.

Oh not at all. To be fair, the thought that Deimos might be disturbing anyone didn’t come to her mind until he mentioned it. Glancing towards the city, she tilted her head slightly. After a moment of pondering, she turned her focus back to Deimos. Well, you’re not disturbing me. Not sure about the others though. They tend to be skeptical of mouth-breathers. An attitude she never understood. Yes, the mouth-breathers were quite different from them, but that made them all the more interesting to her.

I can show you around if you want. I’m sure I can get them to let you have a look around the city. At least she hoped so. She wasn’t entirely sure, but there was nothing to lose by asking. Worst case, they would say no. But then I’ll ask you lots of questions about mouth-breathers and the things on land, okay? A wide smile accompanied these words.

DEIMOS

His eyes followed the subtle movement and shift towards the city – a sprawling mecca he wouldn’t have surmised was down below the depths – but then again, there were so many other layers, places, and things to be discovered. That this was here was just another layer of exploration, intrigue, and gravity; and his head tilted, filled with curiosity. At the very least, he hadn’t bothered this mermaid, and perhaps that was all he could rely upon in the moment. He cracked a slight smile, bowing his head. That would be very kind of you.

As for the transaction, he permitted a warm laugh to flicker inwardly, over Attuned bonds and adornments. Sure. I will do my best. Depending on the array of inquiries; the Sword couldn’t be certain of their philosophies and information towards those, like him, who resided on land. Treading water lightly, he waited for her motions to follow, uncertain how permissions were granted and how potential guests were to be escorted.

Then let’s go! Before even finishing this sentence, Chrys already turned toward the City excitedly, gesturing for Deimos to follow her. For a moment, she started rushing off quickly ahead of him, before realizing she probably should give Deimos time to follow and actually take in the surroundings if she meant to show him around. Slowing her pace to something she thought he would be able to follow more easily. Tell me if I’m too quick. I’m not sure how fast you can comfortably swim with these. Saying this, she turned back towards him for a moment, gesturing at his legs and feet.

Closing in on the city, she kept her eyes open for the guards, knowing she would most likely have to ask them for permission to actually tour someone from the land around. Then again, she didn’t really know of many mouth-breathers who had come to visit, so there was not much for her to go on in terms of previous cases.

It didn’t take long for one of the guards to notice them closing in, approaching her and Deimos swiftly. A man with short, dark hair and the lower half being a turquoise and green speckled fishtail. He carried a thin, serrated spear-like weapon with him. Once he was close enough to speak to them through the attuned bond, he addressed Chrys. Chrysaora. Although he made sure not to show his emotions in his communication, the furrowed brows and stern expression spoke for themselves. He paused for a moment, as if to say something else, before he continued on. Who is this with you?

Seemingly a polar opposite in mood to the man, Chrys gave him a wide smile. This is Deimos. He’s interested in learning more about us and our culture so I’d like to show him around if possible. To be fair, he hadn’t expressed any interest in their culture yet, but a little white lie never hurt anybody. She looked over at Deimos, hoping he would corroborate her claim.

DEIMOS

Deimos hadn’t spent his formative years beside the sea for any lack of skill in the swimming department; and he snorted inwardly, enough for her to hear via the attuned bombardments. He continued along with ease, though lacking in the quicker bursts, muscles pummeling and pushing through the lingering currents with repose and tranquility, completely at home in the fathoms and depths – an ocean was an ocean, no matter which world it belonged to. The pace is fine, arching a brow, before continuing along the efforts – watching as the city and all its expanse widened, stretching outwards, silhouettes against the fathoms’ sand.

Guards weren’t unexpected, though his scrutinizing perusal was evident too – warrior to warrior, soldier to soldier, suddenly aching for days where he did much of the same. Tucking the emotions away, he only enveloped the reverberations with his semblance of inquiry, nodding respectfully to the sterner individual, eyes carefully not glancing at fishtails, but at the weapon. He could probably make the same in quick, swift manners, in the keen regard of his incantations. Instead though, the deep rumble of his voice resounded outward, back into the bond formations. Merely curious, and nothing more. He smiled, affable and amiable. If I am bothering you, I can leave. The same offer he’d given to Chrysaora, though she’d rebuffed it instantly. He wasn’t too certain about this one.

A short pause followed Deimos’ statement while the guard took another look at Deimos. We are not fond of outsiders floating around our city merely because they are curious. It almost seemed like there was a short sideways glance at Chrys at this point, though it was gone in a second. Unless you have pressing matters to attend to within our city, I ask you to leave.

Chrys nodded. Even though she was disappointed at the way things turned out, she knew from the start that the others weren’t really open towards the mouth-breathers. Well some were, but others not so much.

Turning back to Deimos, Chrys seemed to forget (meaner voices might say ignore) the guard, who was still waiting for them to leave. Sorry, I guess I can’t give you a tour of the city after all. But this didn’t mean their adventure had to end. As if she would be discouraged by something as small as this. I can show you around some other places though, if you want! There’s a really interesting shipwreck I found. I also know of a place where you can see some beautiful corals. And there’s also the shrine. As she listed these options, she was already back to her usual energetic self.

He wasn’t at all surprised by the guard’s terse, short response, nor the sentiments behind it. He’d been amongst the same at one point or another. So the Sword granted a short nod, and backed away, a few strokes off into the distance, until there was a safer threshold amongst the clear, open water, the city safely in the background.

It is fine. No harsh feelings, no rancorous ends, no judgements towards any of it – especially not the younger one, who merely seemed determined and inquisitive, as they’d all been in days not spent by angst and derision. The notions of the venture changing though gave him pause, and his head tilted back towards her – brow arching at all the other possibilities. While the coral and shipwreck could be infinitely fascinating, it was the last portion that gave over to more curious antics. You have a shrine down here? Deimos supposed it made sense – if they were aligned with the Old Gods in some manner.

Yep! Delighted by Deimos apparent interest in further exploration, she continued on: It’s really old and some parts look like they might fall apart at some point. Well, it does look interesting and ancient because of that. But I still think it could use some repairs. A shrug accompanied this. While Chrys felt that someone should repair the shrine, she certainly didn’t feel pressured to start such an effort herself. Not like she had any idea how to do such a thing anyway.

It’s not in the city and open for anyone to visit. Though we are usually the only ones there, since people from the land don’t come here often. I can show you the way there if you want.

There was nearly an offer within his mind at the notion of repairs – but it wasn’t his place, nor his land, to present such a bestowal. Perhaps wear and tear came from its tenure at the bottom of the sea. Maybe some liked it that way. It might have been left to its own devices simply by the work of nature, and they considered it a far more honorable distinction than his Outlander tendencies.

So instead, he left the calculations aside, rendering a polite smile, bridging incantations, weaving more air into his lungs. If you do not mind. It would be interesting to see. He could always leave some offerings to Safrin and the rest of the Old Gods there. Is it to any deity in particular? Treading water briefly, muscles unfurling and coiling back and forth, the Sword waited for her to lead the way – his gaze fixating on the outer reaches of the city, of the world before them.

Sure. It's this way. With these words, Chrys set off, away from the city and it's bioluminescent shimmer. It's to the old gods in general, no specific deity. So far, the idea of different shrines for each deity hadn't occurred to Chrys. Thinking about it now, she wasn't sure whether she thought it was a good or bad idea.

Do you have shrines for specific deities often? On land? I imagine they would like to have their own shrine for themselves, since it's always nice to know people think of you in particular. Then again, this were gods they were speaking about, who knew whether they were even interested in such things. Or is there another reason?
