they should have checked the ashes
of the women they burned alive
Melita’s features were reserved into aspects of quiet contemplation (mouthing ‘what the fuck’ to anyone who made eye contact with her) and extreme distrust (yearning to grab her weapons and just start swinging).

If the courier was scared, the honeybee was downright restless, maneuvering away from the table with the remaining marbles in hand. Staring at them in her palm, she swallowed down whatever trepidation was managing to surge forth, and crossed over proportions of the room, leaving the items by the doors. As far as her questions were concerned, she had quite a few that would probably be left unanswered (for instance: hey, what’s going on?), so she aired on the side of caution, and maybe some advancement in whatever game they were playing. “How can we help you?”

Melita leaves her marbles by the doors and asks her question.

key quest

At first nothing happens - there is little more than a pregnant pause and the sound of a trio of people breathing. Yeah, you heard that right.

But then one of the marbles pings from the corner of the room and fires right back at Talyson, smacking him in the shoulder. It's enough to hurt, but not to do any damage. Luckily.

Following the marble comes a presence, roaring through him and shrieking to the table at large, "Threeeeeeee."

And then another marble, this time bouncing violently in the spaces between the bookshelf and the wall, and a blast of wind that comes spiralling and whipping around Amun - and the old woman. "Sheeeeee diddddddd."

The marbles begin to vibrate again.

The old woman watches.

Talyson and Amun received responses to their questions, and the spirit still seem interested in the marbles! You can repeat your questions, or you can ask something else! Or you can take any other action, it's your choice kiddos.

Your randomly chosen post order is as follows:

Amun 260/270
Maeve 254/264
Talyson 38/48
Melita 318/328

Remember to include a summary at the bottom of your post with all action taken. If weapons/upgrades/abilities/items/shifts/etc are used, please include their desc. from your profile at the bottom of your post as well.

As the sound of breathing filled the room, Amun glanced around for the source, which turned out to be nonexistent or invisible. Of course, as one of marbles flung itself into Tal, the potter winced. Nodding that there were three spirits in the room with them, he felt something impact him as well.

Glancing at the old woman, Amun arched an eyebrow at her. Bending down to scoop up the marble that had hit him, he walked around the table to place it in the corner behind the armchair. Clearing his throat, he turned to address the room. "How do you three know each other?"

Amun takes the marble that hit him and places it in the corner behind the armchair. He also asks how the ghosts know each other.

Maeve

Well, wasn't this just lovely? Maeve flinches as the marbles go flying, eyes darting to and fro as the voices ring out through the space. A shiver run up her spine, causing the hairs on the back of her neck to stand on end, palms clammy as the sound of breathing feels as if it's right by her ear. "How do we free you?" Maeve asks, unsure if she'll get an answer this time. It would likely be much too easy if she did.

She gives the old woman a wide berth, hand resting on the familiar leather of her whip, prepared to draw it from her hip at a moments notice as her eyes remain locked on her. The chances of the old woman simply wearing that skin over something truly monstrous was more of a possibility than Maeve wanted to think about.

Maeve asks another question, but keeps her eyes locked on the old woman.

Tal flinched and let out a soft yelp as the marble impacted him but the presence rushing through him was worse and made him duck behind Maeve for protection. He looked around wildly, trying to see where the spirit had gone, swallowing hard.

A darting glance at the old woman was filled with as much fear as questions, and a second glance moved towards the doorway that hopefully led back to the front door...

"W...why did she kill you?" he asked, voice shaking. He bit his lip and reached down to pick the marble up before moving to place it on the center of the table.

Tal asks why the old lady killed them, and places the marble that hit him on the table.

they should have checked the ashes

The cold ruminations ran down the honeybee’s spine, and she repressed the shudder as best she could. Moving her marbles closer to the doors, eyes pinpointed on the other members of her party, then drawn to the woman as the spirits answered, she unfurled a long, slow, breath. Something wasn’t right here. Not at all.

Yearning to pluck her bow right along her bracelet or snag at her quiver, she refrained – gilded gaze narrowing, speculating, before shouting out another inquiry into the ai, echoing off of Tal's. “Why did she trap you here?” Which individuals were the more sinister ones?

The spirits, or the woman who’d compelled them all here?

key quest

Again the questions are asked. Again marbles ping - and again it's Amun and Talyson who seem to be the most favoured by the spirits. "Do not believe them," the old woman grates, her lips pulling back from teeth that seem as though they have been filed to a point. Or do they? A second glance shows that they're perfectly normal, probably.

"Sisstersssss," the spirits hiss towards Amun, as his marble thrashes against the arm chair. "Jealoussssss." This is for Tal, and his marble skitters around the table and drops upon the floor.

"Lies!" the old woman howls.

The marbles still. The device that Amun chose begins to crackle, like radio static (not that your characters know what that is), and as it tunes in suddenly the spirits' voices seem clearer, ringing out in desperation:

"KILL HER."

Looks like the story is starting to piece together a little... but who do you believe? What do you do?

Amun rubbed the spot  where the marble had impacted him. Bending down, he picked it up, but didn't place it anywhere. Instead, he rolled it around in his palm a few times. Glancing around at the rest of the group, he then fixed his gaze on the woman who'd invited them here. Examining her for any sign of what she might be and for the veracity of , he walked back to the table and took up his original seat.

Leaning forward, he spoke into the music player. "What are your names?" His brow furrowed as he asked them another question. He rocked back in his chair.

Amun picks up the marble. After examining the woman, he goes back to the table to ask the ghosts what their names are. He uses his INT to try and determine what the old woman is and the truth of everyone's claims.

Maeve

Maeve doesn't get an answer. Her lips turn down into a frown, jade eyes still locked on the marble she placed before, waiting for it to do anything. It doesn't. Instead the old woman speaks, voice harshly cutting through the quiet of the room, causing her gaze to snap there instead, seeing the teeth pointed into needle sharp points. Dark brows knit together, hand tightening around her whip as she removes it from her belt, shaking her head. The woman yells and the spirits retort. Desperation clear in their voice. Gods, she wished that she could ask Safrin for guidance right now.

"We're supposed to help these spirits, right?" She looks towards Melita, hoping that she'd see something in the honeybee girl's eyes that helped her make a decision. All she finds is support and while the Queen isn't prone to violence, but she doesn't like being made a fool of. Instead of questioning the spirits, she turns to the old woman, "Why else would they be here if you didn't kill them? How else are they trapped?"

Maeve removes her whip from her belt and questions the old woman instead.

Tal looked from the old woman to the marbles and back again, catching a hint of--

He blinked, shaking his head to clear it, and flinched back from the table as his marble dropped off the edge. Eyes darting wildly around the room, he saw Maeve facing the old woman down so instead he edged over to hide stand behind Amun and the weird device.

"Who is she?" he asked the spirits uncertainly, darting frightened glances towards their hostess in the hopes of being able to dodge any trouble that might come his way.

Tal hides behind Amun and asks the spirits another question.

of the women they burned alive
The motions sent her on edge, to the point where her eyes became resolute, determined, steadfast notions of a woman prone to fire and precision. One look at Maeve would convey her vehement, violent considerations, bow drawn along her bracelet, hands quietly going to her quiver, picking up proportions of electricity, listening to them settle and crackle.

No taking aim, no drawing of the strands. A waiting game, while they asked, while her gaze went to the woman who might possibly be much more than what they were bargaining for.

“Why would they lie?” Her inquiry wasn’t for the spirits, but for the stranger, gaze narrowing to a fine point. “Does Ludo know you’re keeping spirits from it?”

Melita gets her bow, and electric arrow ready, and asks questions to the woman.

Type: Light | Style: Offensive | Level: Basic
Bowstring Bracelet | At first this bracelet appears only as a length of intricately braided bowstring. But with an arrow in hand, upon miming the action of knocking and drawing it, the user will feel a bow beneath their fingers, as if it was there all along.

Type: Dark | Style: Offensive | Level: Basic
Fire/Lightning/Ice Quiver | A magical quiver with two compartments. In one, it turns any arrow placed within into a flaming projectile when shot. In the other, the arrow becomes imbued with electricity. (Made by Remi)

The old woman does not take kindly to your questioning, and as she moves to speak, a rush of air erupts from around her mouth, as if her words ought to have been much, much louder. "These are not good spirits," she snaps. "They lie, they cheat. We must put them to rest!" Slamming a hand onto the table, it's enough to make the crackling device speak up again.

"DANGEROUS," booms the static collective of voices from within, apparently responding to Talyson again.

As if feeding on the energy and emotions in the room, the group will see (barely, sometimes, out of the corners of their eyes) an outline of something surging around the ceiling.

"They are manifesting," the old woman barks. "Quickly, quickly! Dispatch them!"

Who, if anyone, do you attack?

As Talyson took shelter behind Amun, he glanced at the courier. However, the potter didn't comment on the other man's actions. Instead, the Ascended looked between the old woman and the now glowing energy that he could vaguely spot in his peripheral vision.

Letting out a sigh, he scratched his chin. He spared one moment to glance at Maeve and Melita, narrowing his eyes at the two women. They only took up a moment of his time, though, as most of his attention was taken up by the old woman that had dragged them into this. He swept his gaze over her as if that could glean any information about her and her statements.

Amun used his INT to try and figure out what he could about the old woman, especially if she was telling the truth.

Maeve

That answer just won't do. Her eyes narrow and her jaw feathers as she keeps her attention locked on the old woman. Briefly, for barely a second, Maeve looks towards Melita and gives an imperceptible nod. She knows that the honeybee girl will have her back on this. It's a quick and practiced movement, the whip uncoiling at her side, feather smoldering at the end of it. Maeve rears back her arm, snapping it towards the old woman without a second thought, uncaring of the spirits currently circling the ceiling. They could be dealt with later if necessary. Right now, this was the biggest threat as far as the Nightshade was concerned.

With a sonic boom that echoes through out the small sitting room, flames licking along the length of the whip as Maeve steps to the side, careful to avoid her allies. Instead she focuses her attack on the old woman. She'll apologize later if a mistake was made, but she has to go with her gut.

Maeve chooses to attack the old woman with her Phoenix Whip!

Type: Grey | Style: Defensive | Level: Basic
Starlight Bangle | When worn, gives the user +2 to a dexterity roll during a PQ+/KQ. One post cool-down.

Type: Light | Style: Offensive | Level: Upgraded
Phoenix Whip | A magical 15ft whip that creates a small sonic boom and ignites the phoenix feather on its tip when snapped to cause fire damage. When not in use, the feather on the end looks like smouldering embers but is not hot.

Torchline has taught you to survive her weather and her terrain. Once per PQ/PQ+/KQ/Drop, you can 'shrug off' half the damage from ONE non-lethal attack. (In order to use this ability, you must put a clear note in the bottom of your post immediately following the attack you want to 'shrug off').
