in tenebris est veritas.
Crossed arms and tilted head brace for the parade of demi-gods through the Eye’s fire, but nothing could have prepared Chaele for Remi’s crossing. The sight of his many forms chills in her spine and sinks in her gut, intriguing and terrifying and enthralling all at once. It brings a thoughtful tooth to her lip, which is afterward the only proof at all that she hadn’t just imagined it. Ronin’s attempt leaves even further doubt, the expectation for grandiosity thwarted for the same preternatural humanity that does not cease to surprise her.

Her gaze remains on the fire for a short time after, as if trying to see some change or prophecy in its crackling light. Her hands squeeze at her arms, then they drop to her sides as nothing is gleaned. Her voice is quiet in contemplation’s wake as she replies to Ronin.

“It is said to impart power.” The power of confidence, perhaps, or the reminder of one’s own mortality. These placebos are only afterthoughts in the shaman’s mind, however, who tends to see symbolism and intention in every piece of nature. “Time will tell if that proves true.”

Then she looks toward the threshold to the little clearing, the maze beyond, its promise of continued mental and physical toil. “For now, it might be time to find our way back.”

everything i knew is turning into ruins in your shadow
It's unclear if the alchemist would have lingered, would have offered Chaele a ride home, would have tried to draw out the encounter had Ronin not been present. Ronin's presence was, in nearly every situation, precisely the right sort of thing to keep Remi from straying too far in one direction or another. Better they go before the alchemist find himself sitting amidst the cockles of the shaman's heart as a spirit, or perhaps promising to take her dragon-seeing in the Cordillera.

"Time usually does that." Remi says, pocketing the totem and turning toward his husband. "Home?" He suggests, pressing his palms against Ronin's chest before turning his chin just over his shoulder to regard Chaele out of the corner of his eye. "It was very interesting to meet you." And then, in a strange tableau wherein Ronin would seem to collapse beneath the Lullaby's palms followed quickly by his partner, the pair would disappear before they ever hit the ground, whisked away into a dream.
