Maea
And I hope that you don't suffer
But take the pain
Upon entering the Atheneum, lanterns light a path that leads from the well visited parts of the building and back through more rarely browsed stacks. A spiral staircase leading down below ground level guide ones steps through cool and dry corridors and open up into a stone-lined antechamber. There, a pair of heavy doors has been opened to reveal a series of rooms beyond.

The first is a large gathering room, choked with dust and interspersed with furniture that once would have looked plush and comfortable, but now only raise concern about allergens and moth infestations. Arranged around small tables where unwashed cups sit as if previous visitors simply left them there and never came back, the sitting groups all come within comfortable distance of a large fireplace, now choked with cold ashes and cobwebs.

Walking past the gathering area over threadbare carpets, a vaulted arch guide the way into an archive. The tomes and scrolls within these shelves look withered and dry with age, many in desperate need of care, cataloging and re-writing, lest the contents be lost forever. Dim light stream down from narrow window slits just beneath the ceiling, broken and with a yellowed tint from the layers of grime that cover them. Interspersed between the many shelves that line walls and take up most of the floor space a series of desks and chairs can be found, all filled with various tools of the trade such as ink, quills, parchment; all in various stages of disrepair.

On the right hand side from the archive itself, another room branches off. Beyond a carefully closed door lies an office, a study previously used by a former guildmaster. From a coffer within an angry buzzing can be heard, and the room itself with its many shelves, coffers, stacks of paper and the big sprawling desk shows signs of having been disturbed recently, by impatient hands who did not return anything to their intended places.

Maea waited outside the heavy doors for her volunteers to arrive. Lined up beside her were cleaning supplies, garbage bags and stacks of fresh paper, tools, new firewood and everything else one might need to restore the guildhall to its former glory.

"Welcome," she greeted with a warm smile when everyone had gathered, "to the Lorekeeper's Guild. Thank you all so much for coming. There is quite a lot to be done here before we can settle in properly, but between the five of us it should not be a problem, I think." She gestured fondly to the rooms beyond, so familiar yet so strange to her now, in their abandoned state.

"First of all, Amun and I discovered a paper wasp nest in the study when we were down here a while ago. It has been confined to a chest, and needs to be removed so that we can move freely. Secondly, a thorough cleaning of all the surfaces as well as the fire place is long overdue. After that, I need your help to sort through supplies to see what needs replacing, as well as to organize books, scrolls and papers, so that we can begin to restore and catalog everything and see what we have to work with in the future."

Pale eyes sought out and met the gaze of the others, each in turn. Then she brought her hands together, eager to begin. "Shall we get started?"

---------------------------------------------------

This is a PQ to establish the Lorekeeper's Guild, and is focused on cleaning up and restoring the guildhall of the former Loreseekers to a functional state. Please pick a task upon arrival, and lets get started!

- Isla
- Nikolai
- Chaele
- Lilliane

Tasks:

1. Remove the chest full of Paper Wasps in the Guildmaster's Study. They are angry, so use caution!
2. Clean out the fireplace in the Gathering room and dust, sweep, wipe surfaces, remove cobwebs and check furniture for moths and other pests. It's a lot to do, so maybe help each other out!
3. Sort through writing tools and supplies in the Archive, toss out what is no longer usable and replace it with fresh stock. Many of the desks have hidden compartments, make sure nothing is missed.
4. Go through and organize the scattered books, scrolls and papers in all the rooms. Be careful of throwing anything out, as even scraps of parchment can hold invaluable information.

No post order!

in tenebris est veritas.
Chaele’s gaze keeps tipping upward to the skyless ceiling, if only to keep them from looking at the enclosing walls. It does not matter that the library is open and wide; it has been a long time since they have set foot into any building at all. Fearing their antlered mask would have become a nuisance in various doorways, they have opted for a wooden one, circular and small. Even the privacy it offers does not assuage the tension in their shoulders.

They are reticent in response to Maea’s propositions, though not quiet: the occasional sniff protests the dust while a series of glass jars hangs from their belt, clinking as they move. Most of the tasks are beyond them, who knows more about the science of observation than the business of record-keeping. But they will be of some use, claustrophobia be damned.

With a simple nod in understanding, a weathered hand reaches for a broom and feather duster. The paper wasps require an offensive strategy, but the moths and spiders and booklice are nothing but an innocent ecosystem in the atheneum’s ruin. Chaele will jar and rescue as many as they can.

-----

Nervous about being indoors, Chaele opts for the basic cleaning supplies.

Nikolai
Not all truths
Belong to the light
Nikolai arrived, eager to start. When Maea had mentioned starting the Lorekeepers back up, he'd been quick to sign up. As a scholar and lover of ancient texts, it was an easy decision for him. Two of the faces present today were unfamiliar to him, but given that they're here, Nikolai assumed that they share similar passions.

Tasks described, the Ascended elected to focus on the scattered books. Organizing the books and scrolls would take time but Nikolai figured it'd be to his benefit. That way he'd know exactly where texts were when he came to retrieve them later. In order to make it easy to follow for the others though, he created a system. Sorting through the materials, he organized them by subject, and within each section, he organized them by age. That way everything was both divided by topic and chronological.

Nikolai organizes the scattered books/scrolls/papers by topic and within that, he organizes them chronologically. He throws nothing out.

Isla

The Infirmary makes Isla late, as emergencies are wont to do, but when she arrives it's with a warm smile for Maea, Chaele and Nikolai. More and more often she's starting to see these familiar faces at work, and it brings a kindling of hope in her chest about the Grounds that hasn't been there for some time now.

"I will try and deal with the paper wasps," she decides with a gentle nod. "I can't guarantee that it will happen without incident, so keep an ear out for my screaming, she suggests. Brushing some dust off her skirts, Isla heads into the Guildmaster's study and carefully starts to move the chest where the wasps are contained.

Knowing they are likely to be unhappy about this, she uses her optical upgrade to try and see what they are up to inside the chest as she works.

Isla tries to deal with the chest of paper wasps! She starts moving it out of the study, using her optical upgrade to see inside the chest and assess the situation.

Maea
And I hope that you don't suffer
But take the pain
For someone so unaccustomed to dealing with the gathered dust and debris, Chaele is doing a good job of it. There are a fair few spiders lurking within their nets, and she will find herself going up and down to let them out quite a lot. Despite that, the gathering room at large is starting to look a lot better. Time to deal with the fireplace, or perhaps go over the furniture to ensure no surprises lurk within them!

Nikolai on the other hand, might be miffed to realize exactly how disorganized the archive really is. There are broken pens, leaky inkwells and busted drawers on practically every desk. Maea soon came to help him out, upon seeing how little progress he had made, and offered him a crooked smile. "I don't recall it being this bad before," she murmured to him. "Somehow I feel I ought to apologize..."

As for Isla's attempt at dealing with the wasps... she needn't have worried in the slightest. Perhaps it was her radiant personality or the steady way she handled the chest, but the buzzing insects within actually appeared to settle as she moved them outside.
That left her free to select another task! The Study still required sorting through, and then there was the mess made of the Archive... or perhaps Chaele might appreciate a hand with the Gathering Room. Player's choice.

in tenebris est veritas.
Chaele dusts the tables and shelves, perusing a pile of books with mostly literate eyes; they sweep the dust outside, and not without a few sneezes to show for it. They do leave a few spiders in some choice corners, each whispered a little pact to tend to the other insects that will inevitably wander in. And perhaps in solidarity, they pinch a book louse out from between some pages and secret it into their mouth behind the mask.

Glancing toward the desks where Nikolai and Maea are working, then peering out the front door to monitor for Isla’s screams, they opt to continue their solitary work at the front gathering area. Cups are sorted into broken and usable, at least by a wild woman’s practical standards. Cushions are shaken in a flutter of moths. Then with boots better suited to making discoveries than chronicling them, Chaele kicks the largest couch to stir up anything that might be lurking inside.

After a quick snack, Chaele inspects the furniture.

Isla

Well that was easy. Smiling to herself as she successfully moves the paper wasps outside, Isla leaves the chest to air out and the wasps to escape in their own time and chooses to move back to the Study. This was where she started, and so it feels as though she ought to finish the work before moving onto something different.

She begins by trying to organise the books, scrolls and other pieces of parchment, ensuring that the more delicate and fragile items are placed in a separate area for her to inspect later. Books and scrolls are arranged on the desk, until a point where she's able to dust and clean the shelves and the floor. It might be slow going, but it'll be worth it!

Isla chooses to go back to the Study, organising the scrolls and books and emptying the shelves so she can dust/clean/sweep.

Not all truths
Belong to the light
Nikolai glanced at Maea before letting out a long-suffering sigh. "It's all good." He knew how hectic records could get when they were constantly being referred to. Things went from being put back into place to being put where was most convenient. And when entrenched in work the surrounding area always fell into ruin.

Rolling up his sleeves, Nikolai dived back into the chaos. He was determined to conquer the scraps of paper that had now turned this into a personal vendetta. Attempting the same organization stye as before, the Ascended resumed trying to organize the place. Books, scrolls, paper, and random notes were all sorted to the best of his ability.

And I hope that you don't suffer

Chaele would quickly discover that most of the furniture was free from pests, except one. In the upholstery of a particularly plush armchair a family of mice had made themselves comfortable; however, they were now in danger of being squashed should anyone sit down in the chair.

The shelves must have become brittle in the years of neglect. When Isla began to disturb the scrolls and books, a terrible groan was all the warning she got before the whole thing suddenly came thundering to the floor, in a cloud of dust and littered paper!

As for Nikolai.... It was a valiant effort, truly. There was nothing wrong with his system, nor did the books put up any resistance. It was just... not the same task he had started on. Maea looked up from the desk where she had been replacing the ink and quills, and tried her best to keep from laughing at the grim determination on his face.

"We can deal with all that sorting together, later," she offered. A loud crash from inside the study had ger wincing. "Why don't you go help Isla instead? I can finish up here."

Isla

"Oh--!" Isla doesn't have time to swear or do much else other than hold onto the scrolls she's managed to grab as the rest of the shelves come tumbling down. Nothing lands on her feet, luckily, and she doesn't have to worry about breathing in the dust, but this obviously isn't ideal. "It's alright," she calls, in case anyone has heard the commotion, "I'll fix this up!"

First she tries to pick out the surviving documents, books and other scrolls, placing them on the desk where they can't get even more ruined. With that done, she lets out a huff of breath and picks up the larger remnants of the broken shelves to take them out. Sweeping will get rid of the rest of the debris, but there's no point putting up anything new until it's all cleared out.

Isla picks out the documents from the heap and puts them on the desk. Then she removes the broken shelves and tries to sweep up the rest of the debris.

in tenebris est veritas.
Chaele drops the cushion that they had removed from the chair, staring at the stunned silent critters that stare back up at them. “Shoo,” is the first attempt to get rid of them, but all the hand-waving and stomping in the world could not convince them to budge. Further inspection reveals that there is one much bigger than the others, presumably the mother, so they attempt to reach in and grab it; a moment later, Chaele is sucking on a bloody thumb as the animal’s protests are made known.

With a retaliatory frown, the shaman lifts their hand over the largest mouse. A few muttered syllables are followed by a wispy, shadowy magic that pools around it. Its harsh, protective eyes falter with fatigue as its life is carefully drained, just long enough for Chaele to retrieve a small box and place its sluggish body gently inside. Its progeny follow eagerly, clearly still dependent, and the Abandoned sets the box a few paces outside the door. It is not a permanent solution, but it should clear the room long enough for the atheneum to acquire a resident cat.

They return to the room and regard the final task: the fireplace. It is likely that someone else might have a higher standard for its cleaning, but as far as they are concerned, the soot is where it belongs. They might dust it of cobwebs, at least, if only to save their residents from a fiery demise.

Chaele moves the mice outside and begins on the fireplace.

Not all truths

Nikolai only realized his mistake when Maea spoke. He glanced at the paper in his hands and cursed under his breath. Placing it down he nodded at Mea and headed over to Isla. As he approached his brow furrowed at the new mess. "Are you ok?" Nikolai eyed her for any injuries, worried that a falling book might have hit her head.

From there, he joined her in cleaning.  Nikolai worked to collect the fallen materials and place them back in their proper place. He also took down any broken parts and added them to Isla's pile of things to remove.
