With the decision already made in regards to the placement of the pillar, towards where the Citadel stood open, not in the shadows of the mountains, the next proportions were to actually construct the column. Taking a morning off from patrols, he’d already hastened (voluntold) several recruits to participate in the building process, and they’d taken several rounds of maneuvering and piling up supplies, before waiting for others to join.

Deimos, conscientious and diligent, had already drafted up a layout and plan, and pinned it along the wall for everyone to survey and study. With tools and warriors at the ready, they only required the others willing to assist in the undertaking.

As they filed in, he allowed for a brief smile, and then settled into business. “Thank you for coming.” Gesturing to the charcoal and ash nearby, ready for hands and motions, he motioned towards the diagram. “I figured we can start with the layout before building anything,” and since white paint and chalk wouldn’t be effective against ivory snow, the former proportions would do the trick.

They were going to make a cannon and Tal had volunteered with more fervor than he usually did things, because who didn't think a giant weapon was incredibly cool? Besides, he'd been there for the making of the glass panes, and now he was invested in seeing the project through.

The young man arrived with his dragon in tow, having left the sled dogs at home for this one. Boreal was enough, given that she immediately took to the air to look for Belial, and Tal leaned against the nearest wall to help hold it up while Deimos explained how they'd start. He flashed Delia a shy smile and pointedly ignored Sah as he went to examine the diagram and then collect some ash. He began to walk a slow, careful arc in the snow, trying to gauge the width based on how big the panes were, their framing, and the width of the stone blocks piled nearby.

Tal uses ash to begin to draw part of the diagram in the snow up to scale.

Sah

Sah had promised before things went to hell, to help out with the construction. He figured he could at least keep one promise. Leaving the twins with a solemn Ilma, the Abandoned headed to the meeting point. Upon arriving, he nodded at each person present before jumping straight into the work. He couldn't bring himself to look at Cordelia for long, and he most certainly didn't want to deal with Talyson today.

Taking some of the charcoal, Sah started to work on his portion of the outline. The dark material stood out against the bright snow and for a moment Sah could have sworn it was red, not black. Shaking his head, the Abandoned continued to work with gritted teeth.

Cordelia

The other three are already there by the time that Cordelia arrives. The boys start on the outline and Cordelia isn't sure there is much she can contribute, but she finds some stakes in the building supplies that Deimos brought, grabbing a mallet too so she can hammer them into the ground. It takes more effort than she would like to admit, given that the dirt is iced over and frozen solid, but she manages it. Taking some string, Cordelia wraps it around the stakes, outlining where the base is going to go.

She doesn't speak while she works, keeping her eyes down and her emotions walled off, unwilling to let even Deimos in on the turmoil ravaging her body. Instead her focus is solely on the work ahead of her. Nothing more and nothing less.

They were efficient, in all sense of what was required. With proportions staked and marked off, some of the trickier endeavors, given the ground they were working with, would inevitably begin to stir some sort of trial and tribulation. Unaware of any emotional recourse, especially in the way of Cordelia, the Sword persisted onward into the next task.

“All right, with that marked off, we can start preparing the foundation.” He handed out several pick mattocks to everyone in attendance. “The sharp end can be used to outline the area, and the flat side will lift the sod.” He paused, considering, staring down at the layers of snow, and potentially ice, underneath. They’d be able to navigate the already laden outlines – but the largest issue would be the glacial expanse itself. “I can try to use my magic to alter the ice and the ground. Hopefully that will make everything easier,” and if not, he’d gladly change positions with any of the diggers and utilize his strength in that area too.

With a nod, he settled into work – incantations rendering, turning, twisting, working to aid everyone else.

So Sah was acting... weird. Weirder than usual. Well, a different kind of weird, at least. And Delia was, too. Tal kept sneaking worried glances in her direction as they made their lines in the snow, and maybe even one or two at Sah as they finished the first task in heavy silence.

Regathering at the supplies, he gave Deimos a look that involved raised brows and shifted eyes towards the other two, but the pick mattock he was handed in return earned a wrinkled nose and a look of silent skepticism. Raw strength wasn't exactly his strong point, so...

"I can outline," he offered, turning the mattock pointy-end down and heading towards the oldest part of the ash trail, aware that it might be blown astray if they waited too long. Putting his back into it, he focused on making each strike and drag into the frozen earth precise rather than deep; leaving that to those that came after him.

Cordelia

The looks aren't lost on her and as much as she would like to acknowledge them, the huntress knows that doing so would be detrimental to her getting any work done. Instead she does her best to ignore them. It's obvious and blatant. The attuned hates to think that she might be hurting others just as much by doing so, but she can't think of the latter. Taking the tool from Deimos, Corelia finally speaks, "I'll outline too." She mutters, following behind Talyson with her own pick mattock, each stab gouging deeply into the earth along the precise lines he proceeds to draw.

Cordelia outlines behind Talyson.

Sah

Sah vaguely noticed Tal's glances given that the majority were directed at Cordelia. But he still felt the courier's eyes on him at least once, but he ignored it. "I'll dig." He led a few volunteers (NPCs) to one of the dig locations. "Work in teams on the same area. Try to pry through the dirt and ice and then dig deeper once you have access to the looser soil."

Directions given, Sah turned and began to do his own share of the digging. Using brute strength and focus, he tried to make some progress through the frozen ground. It was almost meditative in how much effort he had to use.

Bizarrely enough, it wasn’t the digging, or the swell of incantations that went awry – but the outlining. Maybe the surface hadn’t been keen to cooperate with either Attuned or Accepted – the marks drawn in the snow a bit hazy, wobbly, and certainly not useful for any sort of structural work. But the others understood, and it was their influence that seized the moment.

The layers of Deimos’ magic carved out the hardened pieces of ice and rime, the packed, solid sod, and the soldiers and other workers, along with Sah’s directions and own brute force, combined into solidified efforts. From there, the proportions were dug out, and they could all take a breather while they discussed and directed where to go next. “Good work,” he murmured, wiping his own brow. “We need to start on the base and foundation,” pointing towards where brick, mortar, and a concoction of the cement would need to commence. “Some of you can continually mix,” because they would need a lot of it, and had to temper it correctly, efficiently, smoothly, “And the others can pour and even it out.”

Sah

Sah was glad to see the digging go well. It seemed that luck was on their side with the patch of earth they'd chosen. Either it wasn't too frozen or the tactics they implemented were just effective. Regardless, the digging was soon done. Deimos explained their next step and the Abandoned headed over to the mixers. "I can start mixing some up." They couldn't pour what wasn't' made yet after all.

Setting up, Sah noted just how to mix the cement and the ratio of ingredients. From there, he started to create batches as efficiently as he could. Though he tried not to rush lest he mess up.

Tal did his best, but when he stopped to look back over his work his scowl came out in full force. The outlining was definitely not his finest moment. Not even Delia could salvage the rough job he'd begun, but luckily Deimos and Sah were on the ball and it ended up being just Good Enough™ to get by.

Still, the courier didn't feel good about it and when the next task was announced he nodded gratefully, hoping to redeem himself. "I can mix, too," he offered a few breaths after Sah had. Heading over to join the councilman, Tal grabbed a stick and stuck it in, stirring with a surprisingly steady, comfortable hand. He hadn't done it a lot, but at least it was something he had done before; most recently when building the waystation.

"Is Lilly okay?" he muttered awkwardly, trying to figure out what had his... whatever Sah was... so down.

Cordelia

The outlining went wrong and just about every possible way. Cordelia doesn't snap, keeping her emotions in check, not daring to let her hold slip on anything. She's grateful one they're finished with it, however. Even more thankful when Deimos and Sah straighten it out themselves.

Sah and Tal move off to mixing and she's left with Deimos to spread out the foundation. It's poured into the sectioned off area and Cordelia drops to her knees, using her tool to slowly spread out the mixture. She takes the time to make sure the mixture is even, reaching each edge and corner, working in batches to ensure it's all the same thickness.

Cordelia pours and spreads the foundation.

This time, it’s the mixing that goes slightly awry. There was no telling how the boys blundered, one could guess a lack of attention, but much of the cement went askew, making a mess instead of aligning into the pouring proportions. The General arched a brow in their direction, eyes narrowing suspiciously at Talyson and Sah, but another batch circumvented through, permitting Cordelia and himself to pour them into the portions for the foundation.

A few more moments passed, and the structure had a solid base – which gave them an opportunity to ready other things while it dried and hardened.

“Good,” he muttered, gaze flickering back to where the cement had been perilously misplaced along snow and loam. “That should be cleaned up,” because they wouldn’t want it to become a hazard along the Citadels’ citizens. “And then we can prepare the brick and mortar, and ensure they are level.” Otherwise, they’d have a lost cause in a tipping, tottering pillar.

Nothing seemed to be going right this season and Tal's scowl was becoming dangerously permanent as he glared at the messy cement mix. He knew it wasn't entirely Sah's fault so he did his best to bite back his grumbling as they tried again.

Round two went better and he let out a quiet sigh of relief as they passed it along to Deimos and Delia to finish the preparations.

He eyed the mess from the first batch of cement with wrinkled nose and then patted his Bag of Holding a little smugly. "I can get the bricks!" he offered eagerly. Stones might have required a bit more strength then he had - even if he was getting better - but individual bricks weren't that heavy, and thanks to the Bag he could carry as many as they needed between different places of the nascent cannon tower.

Heading over to the pile, he began loading up so he could deliver those bricks to wherever Deimos wanted them to go!

Tal uses his Bag of Holding to load the bricks for delivery o7
