The anteroom to the infirmary had confirmed to Isla that it did, in fact, exist. However, on trying to get into the place properly, she found the door utterly refusing to budge. Beyond it were potentially wards, supplies (it was a long shot but who knew), equipment and... well. Space to work. Unfortunately, it did not seem as though the medic was going to get much farther than the aforementioned anteroom without help. So help was exactly what she had gone looking for.

Having recruited three (hopefully fairly strong) individuals, she stepped aside for them to have a crack at the door. "I just need to get it open," she explained. "Preferably without damaging anything behind it. It doesn't seem to have a lock to try a key, so I'm not sure why it isn't opening."

Edy
fuck you <3

Uhm, obviously Edy followed the pretty doctor. Just common fucking sense that in this new world of fuckery and mystery that you'd follow the one person who could patch you up. Also, the view was excellent.

Grinning, Edy cracked her knuckles. If she'd been thinking clearly she might have noticed that the wrist Isla splinted not too long ago was fully healed far sooner than it should have been. But of course with the pretty blonde and a challenging obstacle just asking to be blown up before her, Edy's thoughts were on anything but her previously broken bone.

"I got this doc." The teenager boasted with a wink.

Having no idea that her magic was not the same that it was back in Northwind, Edy looked at the door. Nothing happened.

Blinking, she tilted her head and shot a wolfish smile towards Isla. "Performance anxiety. You understand." She quipped jokingly, but instead she was anything but calm. The fuck was happening here?

Swallowing, Edy tried again. This time she focused properly on the wellspring of her magic, finding that it felt fundamentally changed. It was there...but different in some hard to specify way. Stepping close to the door, Edy narrowed her eyes. The door hinges suddenly disappeared into all but dust. Grinning with triumph she smirked as she looked towards Isla.

It was entirely possible that the door was still wedged in place, but fuck it. Edy had done the thing.

Roana had been happy to help when she had been asked. There was no formal military anymore. They hadn't really roganized into any sort of hierarchy. Right now they were just trying to survive. So she was happy to lend her strength to the cause so it was at least not going to waste. Besides, who knew what would be in this room? Perhaps there were medicines or first aid supplies - bandages, tinctures, things like that. Or maybe there were clues as to what this place was.

She watched Edrei struggle for a moment but stayed quiet. This was a new world and the rules of magic were possibly different. Or she just wasn't very good and Roana didn't want her to feel bad. Everyone needed to feel valued and capable to perform at their best. When the hinges disintegrated she stepped up to the door. "Alright, lets get this thing unjammed shall we?" She said as she wedged her fingers into the small space between the door and the jam. Once she had a good grip she tugged with all her might to try and pull it out, hoping to avoid breaking thw door if she could.

When Elyna had seen this particular group and heard about this particular task, she hadn’t hesitated to offer her aid; while healing was less useful for her kind, she knew it was important for more fragile bodies. They didn't have injured yet, but given how weird this new world was no doubt they'd have them soon. Besides, this was a group of powerful women—although each in their own very different way—and she could definitely get behind that. As Isla explained the problem, Edrei eventually managed to deal with the hinges (though the magician seemed less powerful than before, which was worrisome and tracked with some change Elyna had noticed about herself), and Roana started to pull the door down, Elyna took up a position on the other side from the ex-captain and slipped her fingers into the crack there. Between the two of them, they should be able to get it open. If not, they'd have to come up with a solution beyond brute force.

Either way, they should proceed cautiously. "Let me go through first once we’ve gotten this out of the way." Right now, even with her reduced speed, she was still probably the best scout among them, not least of which was because she was still nearly indestructible and could see in the dark. Or at least, she hoped: the changes since coming here hadn’t exactly been easy to suss out, but Elyna could tell she was different somehow. Whether that was a good or a bad thing was yet to be seen.

From within came an absolutely unmistakable noise: a noise that Roana especially would have heard more often than not lately.

It was the sound of a baby crying.

Fiercely the child wailed as the woman pried the door down. As the rusty boards came loose, a sudden burst of stale air would greet them, pulled forth by the sudden vacuum-like effect of having removed the door.

Isla

this won't hurt a bit

Three strong women and an Isla - the door did not stand a damned chance. She smirked at Edrei and looked impressed as the door hinges simply... disintegrated before their eyes, a smile lighting up her face. She let Elyna and Roana have at it next, and in no time at all the door came away, though she had to waft away dust and the stench of old damp that greeted them from within.

A long corridor wound off into the darkness beyond the door. Or... wait, no. It only looked like a corridor. In reality this part of the infirmary was merely a long room, though individual beds were sectioned off with long, yellowed curtains that obscured what was beyond, rising up at either side of the walkway.

Then a baby's cry split the air.

"What on..." Isla's eyes widened and she resisted the urge to rush in, nodding urgently for Elyna to do what she had advised.

What on earth is THAT? Post order:
1. Elyna
2. Roana
3. Edrei

Well, that was unexpected: a baby crying was just about the last thing Elyna had expected to hear when they finally got the door open. Of course, she was fully convinced that it was a trap of some kind. After all, no baby could’ve survived being sealed inside the building for who knew how long this place had been ruined. It made a lot more sense to assume that this was something designed to lure them in, perhaps get them to lower their guard. If so, it backfired spectacularly, since Elyna’s instincts were immediately pinged; if she’d had hackles, they would’ve raised at the sound. No fake baby was gonna get her to act dumb.

She’d still go in first—it made the most tactical sense and she’d already committed—but she wanted to voice her opinion before venturing forth. "Illusion magic, or some other trick, you think?" Her voice was pitched in a low whisper towards the other women: hopefully they’d agree with her assessment that this was not something they wanted to mess with. Mostly, she just wanted them to be as cautious as she was. Luckily, her eyes had no need to adjust to the light, or lack thereof, within the room, so she proceeded, glaive now held before her. Instead of speeding ahead to scout as she’d said she would, Elyna was taking her time, making sure there weren’t any traps (not that she’d necessarily notice) and that the footing was steady for her more fragile companions before moving on. All the while, she tried to zero in on the sound of the baby and let it guide her; even if she knew it was a fake, they still had to investigate. Hopefully Roana would be close behind.

Roana actually stopped in her tracks, blinking in confusion when she heard the noise. Oh yes, she knew very much what that noise was. Her mother's instinct was to run un and find the child to soothe it; but her brain stymied her movement. It reminded her of creatures called mimicks that used deception and pitiful sounds to lure in its prey. This could very easily be that. It seemed her companions may be of that mind.

"Or it is a baby." She said as she drew Krosis from its sheath. "Stranger things have happened than finding a baby in a locked room." Like being transported through dimensions to other worlds. She followed Elyna in, covering the areas that she could not or did not. Teamwork like this would be essential to their survival.

Edy
fuck you <3

Edy was obviously skeptical.

As the youngest of the group, the least maternal (well, that was debatable with Ely around), and also the least likely to understand what love was, the Launceleyn thought that the former blood-fiend was making a lot of sense.  “So...instead of getting medical supplies, we’re all off to play hero now?” She asked sounding a bit skeptical.

Given that Ely was leading them towards the sound–illusory or not–seemed to answer her question.

Shrugging, Edy waived a hand to let the pretty doctor go before her. It made sense that someone with a bit of field training should take the rear just in case something decided to sneak up from behind.

That, and the view was excellent.

Isla

this won't hurt a bit

One of these days Isla would have to roll up a bit of paper and swat Edrei for her overt subtle flirtations, but today was not that day. As Ely led the way inside with Roana at her heels, the doctor nodded at the Launceleyn and followed after the other two. "A baby in a locked room that doesn't look as though it has been opened for... some time." She couldn't help but sound a little sceptical of Roana, even though she had to admit that the cry was damned convincing.

The group of women continued onwards, though Isla had no chance of being able to see well in this darkness. The curtains to either side of them seemed to flutter and dance, and she took shallow breaths through her nose. It stank of antiseptic, damp and dust in here. If there was a baby, Isla had no idea how it had survived in here.

"Does anyone have a light?" she asked, feeling suddenly foolish not to have brought one. "It's still crying. Whatever it is, we might be able to search better if we can see all of the room..." So saying, she reached out to draw back one of the curtains suddenly, trying to see the cubicle beyond.

No post order!

Edy scowled slightly. Her magic had been...well, fucked with slightly since coming here. While it was true that destruction magic might not have been helpful in this situation, not knowing how she could contribute at all felt stifling. “I can do...you know. That thing if someone makes a spark.” Edy said, glancing towards Isla knowing the pretty doctor would know to what she was referring.

Glancing at Roana and Ely, Edy nibbled the inside of her lip. She wasn’t 100% sure how to best assist here. She didn’t particularly give any fucks about whether or not there actually was a crying baby, but she sure as fuck wasn’t going to be the weakest link here; Isla not included.

So once again Edy tried to focus on her magic. If she could cause some sort of explosion perhaps she could make a spark and then ... do that knew thing she’d learned that she could do now. Only when she stared at a bit of fabric on one of the cots, absolutely nothing happened. The well of energy inside of herself she could normally draw from didn’t seem empty so much as it just didn’t seem to be there at all.

Hopefully someone could make a spark.

Roana shrugged at the skeptical tone of Isla and Edrei. “Like I said, stranger things have happened. And I think we can manage to get medical supplies and play hero.” She said with a grin. These two sure seemed to be bumps on a log, didn’t they? Sure, it probably wasn’t a baby but it might be. And they could still look for medical supplies while they located the source of the screeching. Lighten up and have a little fun, go with the flow! They had been transported to another random universe – the ex-captain was fairly certain that meant all logic was pointless now.

When Isla asked for a light Roana piped up again. “I’ve got a light ring.” She said, twisting the ring on her middle finger. It illuminated enough of the space to make it much easier to navigate and search. Still with her sword drawn – just in case the baby thing ended up being a monster – Roana searched the room for both the source of the noise and any supplies she might happen across.

Elyna didn’t need a light, since she could see perfectly fine in the gloom. Apparently her companions didn’t have that ability; while she’d known that objectively, she constantly forgot that not everyone had the same capabilities that she did. "I have night vision, remember? There’s a long corridor, with sections of the room being cordoned off by curtains." She probably should’ve led with that statement, but it wasn’t her fault everyone else seemed inferior to her.

Then, the light bloomed from the ring and she sighed. The sooner they figured out whether this baby was a monster or not the better. So instead of searching for medical supplies—which Elyna wouldn’t have recognized anyway—she decided to just throw caution to the window and speed forward, running towards the origin of the sound. Still fairly confident in her ability to at the very least survive or at least overcome any threat here, she hoped it wouldn’t take her long to get to the bottom of this. If (or, more likely, when) she stumbled across anything unusual, she’d shout it out.

As Elyna moved nearly soundlessly through the corridor, the wailing continued.

A scratching sound could be heard against one of the doors to her left. There was blood on the outside of the door and a good deal of it on the handle as well. Though Elyna did not possess a strong scent given her body composition, the creature inside seemed to sense her presence and immediately it grew silent.

A scuffling could be heard from within as whatever it was seemingly moved away from the door.
