DEIMOS
The Sword lifted his features to the dry, bitter, howling wind, chilling even in the midst of summer’s eaves, grateful and moderately content as the rest of the breeze flickered against his coat and furs. Visions of another time, another place, always sharpened and honed here, along the corner of his eyes and in the figments of yesteryear’s memories, where lives merged and combined. Not ghosts or wraiths, but filaments of a similar path, bearing weight along the ice as if he’d traversed it for eternities.

But he wasn’t alone, and so didn’t fall into the wake of recollections, turning his head over his shoulder to watch the others – dragging the sled behind him, filled with the necessary tools for carving and cutting into the ice. Zuriel snorted at a few offerings left near the glassy baubles of the shrine before moving on in sleek, nimble strides, and Belial scouted overhead, pervading what should’ve been quiet endeavors into a boisterous hoot. Jutting his jawline towards the trail ahead, Deimos’ voice carried over the wind towards fellow Halovians and compatriots. “We can start over here,” along a corner not flanked by the sea.

Evie

The wind is oppressive out on the ice, but every citizen in the group is outfitted in the finest Halovian gear they can afford to combat it. Evie included. Though sweating out on the ice is dangerous, she is prepared to heal what she can along the way, and intends to send each worker off with a touch of magic to discourage any sickness the day might inspire.

Gloved hands brush hair off her forehead, accustomed to keeping it down around her neck when venturing beyond the Citadel’s walls for a bit of extra warmth. At Deimos’ direction, the Evergreen turns and claps her hands briskly. “Section into two teams, and make sure to trade off if you get fatigued. See me for any injuries promptly please.” Be they split palms, sprains, or otherwise. Evie would not risk anything worsening out on the ice, where luck loved to turn on you. Signaling a few men to her side, she splits off, finding a good place and clearing the snow gathered on top. From there they begin to mark the outlines of what they intend to harvest, and set about driving their wedges.

Tal was quiet as he managed the big sled over the snow and ice, speaking up only to call commands to the dogs and Bella in particular. The lead dog moved with a smooth stride and alert ears as she set the pace for the full team behind her. The courier was running his second biggest sled; the largest was with his sister, who had taken over his usual trade route for the season, but with a full haul of ice to bring back he had planned for enough dogs to swap out with any that pulled a sprain or cracked pads in Halo's eternal cold.

The courier himself was dressed lightly for the weather in a heavy sweater and light jacket but didn't seem to feel the cold at all. When they reached their destination he pulled on his heavy duty work gloves and made his way over to Deimos with only a subdued, unreadable glance towards Evie. He slung his axe over his shoulder and waiting for the marks to be placed. Once the first few blocks were outlined he joined a couple of the other helpers in beginning to chop away at the ice so the team behind them could lift it out.

The first block was always the hardest...

DEIMOS
Commands called, curled and lingered amidst freshly fallen snow and the pending, chiseled ice – but so subdued, that Deimos found himself restless. A spark of confusion might've gleaned along his features, reading between lines, finding edges he didn't particularly care for. His eyes snagged at Evie, then Talyson, and the pack of others joining their multitudes, and permitted a few quiet breaths, furrowing his brows, retreating into the serious notions of the matter at hand.

Incantations drew and quartered, water magic striking through and uprooting the rime on its own accord – strength and dominion followed suit, and before long the Sword had his first block in hand, and playfully, perhaps out of seditious purposes, pushed it along with Air, so that it whipped over towards the sled in its own rushing haze.

And then, because even to a man who’d immersed himself within silence for eons couldn’t take some of it along the ice, antics began to unravel – minor, small, perhaps even insubstantial. But the beast could contort and control elements with regular fervor, and so, with very little effort and an air of perfected reticence, splashed some droplets of the sea towards Evie and Talyson both.

At a distance, the Ursur looks like nothing more than a snowdrift. Upon closer inspection, however, its thick white fur and huge tusks make it stand out as a once fearsome predator, now fallen and lifeless. There are no major visible injuries upon the creature - no blood at all to be seen - but this does not look natural.

Evie

Evie doesn’t notice the look Talyson throws her way - she’s too busy eyeing the distinctly unmoving, dead shape in the distance. But dead is dead, and perhaps she is too much of a native Grounder, but dead means ‘move on’ to her. Her companions seem restless and unsure, but take their lead from her, and go back to driving their wedges to the base. With no water or air incantations to rely upon, all Evie can do is supply the strength of her arms. Which is nothing to frown upon of course.

The first block emerges swiftly as none of them are tired yet, which is a blessing. But her straight and intense focus shatters as she feels water spray over her hair and bounce off her resistant coat, sparking a slight yelp at the chill. She already suspects the culprit before she spins, and sure enough Deimos’ cube is already cheerily sliding its way across the ice. Evie does the same with theirs (the workers make noises of surprise but clearly don’t mind the help) and she crinkles her nose over lips that try desperately to smile, aiming the expression at her fellow Warden. A flick of her hand and he’ll feel the drawstrings of his hood flop around in retaliation, aiming to flicker annoyingly at his cheeks for having distracted her.

Boreal tilted her wings high above and dove down to land on top of the dead ursur with a whump of impact, beginning to investigate the corpse with clear distrust in her bristled scales and rumbled growls to herself. Tal glanced over and noted the bear and then back to Deimos with a nod. "Section it up after the ice?" he called out, trusting the Warden General to understand. In Halo the rule was 'waste nothing' and bloodless meat was still meat.

He had just gone back to work when a flick of wetness hit his face and Tal let out an undignified squawk of surprise. He straightened to glare around but really, who else could it be? His face twitched comically, torn between laughter and a scowl--

And settled into a vague harrumph and a small grin as he went back to work. As much fun as it would be to fling a snowball or two, they had a job to do, and he had a cube ready to haul out and slide on its way after the General's. But he still had enough breath to drawl teasingly: "Be a shame if there weren't enough sandwiches to go around at lunch."

Retaliation formed in waves far more innocent than his; the flick of the drawstrings against his cheeks, the insinuation that he wouldn’t be receiving food for his work along the ice. With a wrinkle of his nose he took the gestures for what they were, but the restlessness still toyed along the fringes of his entity, half-begging for distraction and mischief in the idleness of ice. And if they were not willing or obliging, all he could muster was the vague pout and a nod towards Talyson on the notions and semblances of the ursur.

So back to work he went, not conspiring anything else, save for his incantations wielded and cut through the proportions of frozen sea. It was a rinse and repeat modicum: slash the ice, lift it from the water, and slide it over towards the sled. By the time he’d finished another round, the Sword had started seeing how far he could get them, and if they’d collide with one another, sending others volleying and rallying.

Evie

Gods but she would love to entice and agitate further. Except she retreats the moment Talyson turns, voicing something she tunes out in hopes of giving them some sort of privacy as she turns her back. Though the young man’s spurning hadn’t hurt her own feelings, she knows Deimos is fond of(?) the man, and she won’t make waves in an already restless pond.

Luckily the ice harvesting is far from that. One of the younger workers makes a noise of pain and Evie hurries back, reaching out to inspect the smashed fingers. All it takes is a quick burrowing of her fingers beneath the man’s coat to touch his bare wrist to fix it, and his look of gratitude is all she needs in answer. Smiling, she uses her telekinesis once more to lift the block as it comes free. Except this time, seeing Deimos moodily sliding ice around like a game of shotput, the Evergreen hides a smile in the fur of her hood and does the same. Aiming to intercept his most recent cube with her own to spin it off course.

Tal hacked away with his team, breaking the ice into blocks the old fashioned way without magic to aid them, but they worked steadily, if not swiftly. He did pause just at the right moment to catch the little pout Deimos aimed his way and the courier narrowed his eyes at the Warden with a wrinkled nose. He tapped his chest and then pointed at Deimos with a playfully admonishing finger before going back to work - not without a more cheerful cast to his features as he helped lift out the next block and sent it on its way.

Until he heard a crunch of ice behind him and looked back to see two of the blocks - not one of his team's, thankfully - had collided a little distance away. Straightening, Tal cast dark looks at the Wardens and rested his hands on his hips. "Can you two please focus," the youngest member of the team said with exasperation and a weary roll of his shoulders. "Some of us are tryin' t'work here!"

It was somewhat undermined by Boreal bounding over to hop up on one of the ice blocks that was still sliding, spreading her wings and sinking her talons into the ice to balance as she caroled her delight at this new game.

Cutting and slashing another of the harvested ice, as he lifted this portion up, he turned to witness Evie’s ice block sliding towards his – knocking it askew. The goading and challenge was just enough to spurn the disinterest out of his gaze, narrowing his eyes slightly towards the Evergreen in a seditious glance, smile curling along the corners of his mouth. He could hear Talyson shouting something and being petulant over nothing, but considering they were doing their jobs, just with a little twist of amusement instead of restless anarchy and boredom, he ignored the courier.

“Ice block closest to the sled wins,” he uttered amidst the workers; a small uprising of his own. This time he sent his towards Evie’s last one with a little more force and power, intending to knock it entirely astray and away from the vessel.

Evie

Tal’s exasperation is heard loud and clear, but Evie is not so withering a flower as to wince or apologize. Especially not when the man’s own companion eagerly joins the fun with a trill of excitement, undermining his efforts. Deimos seems to make the decision for the both of them, but Evie’s grin is entirely unrepentant and blatantly eager. Some of the workers seem intrigued by the game, and in fact another block goes sliding past from behind her before she can even take up proverbial arms in this new challenge of theirs.

“Loser buys a round of drinks?” she proposes with a cheeky grin. Be it whiskey, water, or cocoa, surely everyone would delight in a free cup at the end of a day spent laboring on the ice. In fact just to prove her dedication to the challenge, Evie moves to break the seal on the half-done block her team is working on, lifting it from the water easily to send it sliding towards the sled with a well-aimed push of both magic and foot.

A couple of the men and women on Tal's team grinned and lifted their voices to join in with the competition, racing to pull free the current block and send it after Evie's with whoops of encouragement to help it slide farther. Conversely, Boreal was no help at all as she decided that the moving blocks were prey to be pounced on; her claws and weight slowing some prematurely while pushing others a little farther as she leapt from one to the next, adding an element of joyful chaos to the proceedings.

The courier just shook his head and blew at a rebellious forelock in exasperation at his companion's antics and the distraction of most of his team as they rushed to cut more blocks and send them careening towards the sleds. A few of the older, more unflappable helpers calmly ignored the competitive atmosphere and worked at a brisk but even pace and Tal gladly swapped out with one of their younger members who wanted to get in on the betting. He didn't have magic, but he had a methodical approach and a sharp axe for cutting the ice and he found himself slotting unexpectedly well into the quiet group as they found a new rhythm.

The merriment, comradery, and juvenile tactics were enough to keep the flow of ice moving at a faster clip – the Sword watched and didn’t even bother hiding his mischievous smile as they went teetering and sliding across the rime. Some hastened far off to the left, through either Boreal’s efforts or their own mishaps, some were perfectly controlled as though it’d been years of experience in handling shuffleboard proportions, and others meandered in the middle.

His eyes narrowed as he sent another purposefully, swiftly, towards one of Evie’s, content to watch it batter behind the sled. But there were others amidst them that did far poorer, and he witnessed one of the workers’ rapidly spin out of place and stop nowhere close to their vessel. “Shame,” he grinned and boomed. “I think we have enough. We can start loading.” And with a number of them already close to the container, the job would go much smoother.
