life shivers, melts, moves on
the pain says I have come for you
More efforts, more defenses, more measures against the possible and inevitable had long since immersed. Plans heightened under the diligent march of time and pending war – first the watchtower, and now the attempts at reinforcing the Citadel walls, and perhaps position some other means and measures along their heights and stature. To be an ominous presence, rather than easy pickings.

The Sword agreed to meet everyone else along the outskirts beside the gates – snagging at his wares, remembering and recalling the way they’d needed some materials urgently at the behest of the tower, and ensured fellow guards and workers followed suit with mixtures for cement and lumber for any other pending projects. He’d figured his own earthen and creation incantations would be beneficial too, but he’d work together with everyone else to see what they had in store.

From there, he rolled up his sleeves and waited for the inevitable as dawn began to break – companions settling nearby to watch and witness.

NOAH

The sun rose and fell, snow littered the ground, wind blew through the icecicles, and the people moved ever forward. Each day was filled with preparations for the coming war -- hunts to stock freezers and homes, construction to reinforce safety measures, and planning and training to increase strength and mettle in battle. Today was no different, because there could be no exceptions. Each of them were a piece in this puzzle, and they each had a weight to carry.

While Noah was no longer warden, he did not let the burden of providing and protecting his people leave his shoulders. Taking up his yok each morning, the Sentinel moved now to meet Deimos and the others he was preparing to construct weapons in an effort to keep Halo as a stronghold. The Fangs had done their job for so many years of protecting the people, but now with the portal and so many with ease of worldly travel at the blink of an eye, it was time for the Citadel to become her own protection.

In his polar bear form, Noah pulled a sled behind him full of miscellaneous building materials all scavenged from Whitebrim: wood, scrap metal, nails, rope, an amalgamation of stone remnants from some of the buildings. Some saws, a few hammers, and a pick axe settled in among the materials. Once he reached the presence of the others, Noah shifted and shook off the harness that he pulled the sled with and gave Deimos a great smile of greeting, stepping to the side so the Warden could see what he had brought. Eira, on the other hand, settled somewhere near where Zuriel stood.

Noah brought building materials scavenged from Whitebrim! He also has everything on his profile.

The courier also arrived on a sled, but his was pulled by his team of dogs while he rode the runners and occasionally pushed from behind. The hounds barked excitedly at the scent of bear, and then barked more in confusion when the bear-scent turned into man-scent, but the steady lead dog kept them all pulling in tandem until Tal gave the calls to halt and set the snow brake to slow them down so they slid to a graceful halt at the assigned meeting place.

"Hey Deimos! Hey Noah!" he called, waving to the men who had arrived before him. Hopping off the sled, he first went among the dogs to distribute scratches and treats while Boreal spiraled lazily down from overhead to rumble a friendly bass greeting to the other companions.

"I brought food and beer for later," he revealed cheerfully, patting the contents of his own sled; plenty to feed all of those who had gathered to help. "Figured we'd be at it all day. Brought most of my woodworkin' tools, too." Most of those were tucked into his Bag of Holding, but the larger elements that could be disassembled on short notice were carefully loaded on the sled as well.

Tal brings everything on his profile, his companion, most of the tools from his wordworking shop, enough stew, bread, and beer in variously insulated tureens and containers to feed two dozen people, as well as his glaive, 5 throwing axes, and a long, sturdy rope.

Evie
When hope and peace begin to fray
Evie arrives flushed, a little sweaty, and with her hair pulled back into a high ponytail, having come straight from her daily morning jog. Deimos had informed her of where to meet early on, so she had stashed her supplies the night before so as not to be doomed to traverse the entire Citadel for the sake of changing. Blame her stubbornness, but she wouldn’t forsake her daily ritual just to make things easier.

Smiling brightly, dimples popping genially in her freckled face, the Evergreen joins her fellow Warden to complete the odd square the four of them unintentionally create. Hands on her hips, she rocks on her feet as she catches her breath, not ready to pull her stashed coat on until she cools off a little lest the sweat give her a cold. “Good morning everyone,” she greets warmly, in a pleasant mood despite - or perhaps due to - the matter at hand. Hard as it would be, they would be making Halo safer, and that would always please Evie. Turning to Deimos, she drops her hands from her hips only to clap them once brightly. “Where should we start Deimos?” Happy to have him coordinate this particular effort given the planning he’d done for it.

Evie arrives and has preemptively stashed snacks, a few outer layers of clothes, and work gloves.

Deimos
life shivers, melts, moves on
the pain says I have come for you
Each of them brought their own nuances, details, and pragmatics: from Noah’s polar bear form, mighty stature, and assemblage of building materials, to Talyson’s tools, sled, and food, and Evie’s bright spirit. Perhaps that meant the endeavors they sought would bend beneath their ilk, brawn, and determination – each received a nod, a grateful smile, and casual inspection of the Sword’s gaze, ensuring everyone was all right before proceeding. “Thank you all for coming,” contorted immediately after their arrivals.

Noting the gathered substances and constituents, he didn’t want to start constructing, building, or adding anything on until they saw the order of the Citadel. The rumble of his tones initiated, jawline gesturing outwards, towards the impressive and impassive surfaces they’d be strengthening. “I thought we could begin by inspecting the walls. Each of us can choose a different direction, and see if there are any visible weaknesses. Report back when you are done.”

Tal was crouched down next to Bella giving her a little extra attention when Deimos spoke up and drew all their eyes to him. The courier nodded at the sense in the Warden's plan, turning to give the nearest section a considering look from where he was. He didn't know much about the Citadel's walls or how often they were inspected; much like the sunrise and the snow, they were something that was simply there, and had been his whole life. It had never occurred to him that they might grow weak with time - like anything else.

"I'll take the West," he offered. Closest to the Sea, and the side he knew best. Settling the rest of the team in loosened harnesses so they could rest and play a little, he unhooked Bella and whistled for Boreal, trotting off to begin his analysis of the wall in question. He pulled his Goggles down over his eyes so that neither sunglare nor shadow would be able to hide any potential cracks or crumbling sections from his keen gaze, and borrowed Boreal's vision to take closer looks at the higher portions of the great defensive barrier.

Noah's smile didn't dim as Evie approached, though the hunter gave her presence no true acknowledgement. It wasn't out of disrespect, but merely his attention stayed on Deimos and what the warlord had to say. He was the expert here when it came to weaponry, after all, and the redheaded stranger-turned-warden seemed here to support just the same as them.

Talyson moved on to his first task like he did everything else, Noah observed--quickly, without hesitation, and probably without much further thought. At least he was willing. Noah folded up the ropes that had served as a harness for him to pull the sled of building materials before gesturing and calling for a few of the gathered citizens to help him inspect the southern most portions of the wall.

Noah heads south!

Evie
When hope and peace begin to fray
Evie doesn’t mind Noah’s quiet. Most in Halo are, and though she’d been a trusted healer as Loren’s second in her previous time living here, she’d never had the pleasure of the Sentinel’s company. Not that any of them will have an abundance of time for conversation of course. There is much to be done, and that is precisely why they’ve started so early in the day.

Considering the remaining options, Evie deliberates. The gates make the most sense to leave to Deimos as the most experienced member among them. For all her skills she is neither a soldier nor an architect. Which only leaves one direction to take up. Waiting until people turn away to conceal it, Evie winks and gives a tiny, playful salute towards her partner before striking out to the east.

Deimos
life shivers, melts, moves on
the pain says I have come for you
Given small smiles (and a roll of his eyes to Evie at the salute), the Sword watched them venture forth, out of the threshold of sanctity, and into finding exactly what they were working with.

The courier’s ventures towards the western portion, facing the seemingly endless sea, wasn’t without its own daunting measures. Talyson would find deep portions of the snow undermining some proportions of his journey, and subsequently, that it had been hiding some cracks lined along the foundations. Not too imposing or large, but certainly large enough to eventually make an impact if not taken care of within the coming months.

Noah’s sojourn towards the south, with passing mountain portions and the familiar edges of the earth, also didn’t start off too haphazardly. His experience with the terrain ensured he was fleet afoot, and would only find several cracks along top lines (which would certainly make putting weapons upon it more difficult).

Evie’s sauntering along the east hailed the most success: these inklings of the wall had either not seen haphazard weather, or had been made far more substantial. They remained just as vigilant and steadfast as the citizens of Halo.

Deimos’ observations along the entrance and the northern segments yielded perhaps the most deterioration. It made sense, given the circumstances, what it’d seen in passing years, and how often the gates were utilized, but the closer inspection proved reconstruction to be a must. Cracks in foundation lines, some splitting upwards and down the middle of ancient brick and stone, and the aperture itself (squeaky, if not rotting along the bottom), meant there was much work to be had.

Evie
When hope and peace begin to fray
Though the walls are surely imposing from the ground, they seem more so when up close at their base. Or perhaps merely longer, as each long minute of careful, attentive detail crawls by. Her companions are just as eagle-eyed and intent, something the Evergreen is grateful for. Though she doesn’t doubt her own abilities, they can’t afford to miss anything. Extra eyes are all the better in this instance.

Alas, they find nothing. Which truly is the best kind of news. Turning back around promptly so they waste no daylight, Evie and her team return to their initial gathering spot promptly. “The walls are entirely sound to the east,” she reports, and her smile hints at relief and gratitude as she says it, knowing it would be too much to hope for the same in every direction.

Tal moved slowly, working his methodical way around his section with the same care and precision he took in checking his sleds over for damage before and after a long run. Whenever he found damage he made marks over the section with a piece of charcoal. The wind would scour it off in a few days, but for the moment it would guide their teams back when they brought the cement for repairs.

The courier returned to the meeting place, neither the first nor the last, and waited until all were gathered until he offered his own report after Evie's.

"The west isn't lookin' so hot," he admitted with a grimace. "Could be worse, but... there's some cracks in the foundations that'll want fixin' before the War. Nothin' too deep, near as I could tell, but the weak spots are there for anyone who knows what they're lookin' for." He jammed his hands into his pockets glumly at having to report bad news, and Boreal leaned heavily against the side of his leg in reassurance.

NOAH

As Noah headed off to inspect the wall, Eira flapped her wings and took to the skies after him. She hung low, sharp eyes sending Noah images to the ground as he walked his own path, inspecting everything he could see. For the most part, it was all sound. However, there were some places where ice had melted and froze again, leaving cracks in stone. It was not unusual for this to happen, and over years and years the walls had been patched and repaired. Perhaps this was the time to put the manpower into really pressing the work on to last more than the patches before.

Finally making his way back to the group, with Eira landing near him, Noah gave his report. "There is some weather damage from thawing and refreezing. The wall has been fixed and patched for decades, so it might be time to really put the effort into supporting those areas if we're going to end up putting more weight on the walls."

--

Noah reports some weather damage and suggests taking the time to reinforce the walls well.

Deimos
life shivers, melts, moves on
the pain says I have come for you
They returned and the reports came with them – the east an area of least concern, the west amongst the dirges, and the south requiring maintenance as well. “This portion,” and the jutting of his jaw showcased the direction he described, “is also in bad shape.” With a long breath, the Sword made his notes, pondered over the conclusions and necessities. “We can start here, make our way west, and then south.” They’d see where they were in the stretches of days and seasons when it came to the eastern proportion – perhaps it was a relief that there was at least one zone strong and sound.

From there, he motioned towards the cement ingredients, and the rest of the workers. “If some of you can start mixing and making the bricks,” as soon to be replacements, “the others can join me in taking the weaker parts away.” Tools lingered nearby, ready and willing and able.

--

We’ll start with the northern portions first!

We need two to start mixing cement to make bricks (along with some NPC help)!

We need one more to help Deimos start taking apart the weaker portions of the northern wall. Feel free to use available tools/abilities!

The news wasn't great and Tal grimaced as Noah and Deimos reported problems in their directions as well. This was going to be a pain in the ice, but the gates had to be repaired and reinforced before War came knocking on them. Tal would never forget the day they'd been flung open by the Eirachi's cultists...

"I can mix cement," he offered when the tasks were laid out. "Been gettin' lots of practice at it lately." Between waystations and watchtowers he had developed a good sense for when it was at the proper consistency for the strongest bond. He tossed Deimos a wry salute and headed over to the fire and the large cauldron waiting there. Filling the basin with snow he let it melt and reach a certain depth before pouring in the cement mix a little at a time and stirring with a slow, firm persistence until the slurry began to thicken into a usable paste.

Tal readies the cement mix!
