It was time to play a game.

The biggest, best game Torchline had ever seen.

Trinket stood atop the road, looking down over the city as it slept. Late at night, late late at night, when nearly everyone slept in their beds. When they woke, the game would begin, a day that they’d never forget.

She held up a pole with a cross at the top. Merchants used it in the market, holding their wares up high so they could be seen. Their wares were locked up at night, but locks opened easily. She just told them to open, open, open. So she had everything she needed.

Hung from the cross, little silver bells rung, alongside little lamps with colored glass. She had captured fireflies to light up the game. Their shining little lights sparkled through the colors in the glass, creating a glittering rainbow in the night. The bells, she commanded to play their song. Silvery chimes rang in the air, carried over the streets of the sleeping city.

With everything ready, the demigoddess began her march.

Down the streets, around every bend, past each house she saw. Each house she passed, she gave little commands. Unlock she commanded the doors. Open she commanded the windows. One by one, she peeked inside, finding the sleeping children. They woke to the bells, rubbing their eyes. She beckoned them forth, luring them from their beds while their parents slept.

“We’re going to play a game,” she told them. “The best game ever.”

The children were quite excited. Out at night, past their bedtimes, being naughty little boys and girls.

“Bring your friends,” she told them. “We need everyone to come play. But,” she put a finger to her lips, “don’t tell the grown ups.”

She led the children down the street, now with others playing the game. They knocked on windows, whispered to their friends, bringing out more little ones to play. Trinket led them from the front, holding up her musical pole. Fireflies twinkling, twinkling. Silver bells ringing, ringing. She commanded windows to open, called for children to come forth. More and more, the streets did fill, with all the little children come to play.

Some grown ups tried to stop their game. Trinket didn’t let them interfere. When she saw a grown up coming, she commanded their doors to close and lock. When someone got too close, she commanded their belts to unbuckle, their pants to drop around their ankles, their shoe laces to tie together. Some found their children, to be sure, and led them back home. But many many more parents slept, or were left behind by Trinket’s tricks.

Down around the winding streets, the parade of children went. Down towards the beaches, down towards the shore. On and on she led the children, down towards the caves. It was nearly dawn when they reached Rae’s Fingers, and the children were growing tired. Soon, they would rest.

Trinket led the children through the caves, following the smugglers’ paths. She’d been made with knowledge of all the world, of languages, secrets, and codes. She followed the path to the deepest depths, where the caves were cold and damp. The children began to shiver. Some began to cry. They had followed the music, followed the lights, but now they were lost, lost, lost, far from their beds and homes. Far from the parents who woke to the sight of empty children’s beds and windows left wide open. Far from safety, far from light. The children were filled with fright.

Once they were deep, and lost, and alone, Trinket brought the parade to a halt. She stood on a rock, still holding her pole, looking out over the eyes of the lost. So many children, so many hopes, so many dreams of life. And all would be lost, be lost, be lost, unless the game could be won.

“Don’t worry,” she said, her mouth in a smirk, “your parents will come, I’m sure. So let us all play, as the dawn breaks this day, while we wait for the players to come.”

The children huddled up close, filled with tears and lost hope, unable to find a way out. And now Trinket’s game was ready to start, and the sands of the hourglass poured. Hours to wait, as the tides slowly rose, and the players of Torchline did search. And when hours would pass, It could be their last, unless the game could be won of course. If the players lost, then children’s lives would be lost, and that would be Torchline’s end.

And so Trinket waited, the game now begun, for the players to come down and play. And whether the parents of Torchline would win, only the passing of time would say.

Trinket’s Quest has begun.

Many children of Torchline have been lured away from their beds.

The goal of this quest is to find the children before high tide. But the city of Torchline must also be saved from itself. Parents wake panicking, desperate for answers. Those who lost children may lash out or riot. Those whose children are still home are scared and defensive, ready to fight for their children’s lives. Post your awakening to the chaos that follows, and be ready to start up your search.

Do you want to play a game?

but you can't be free
Let's be real - Danta doesn't really give a fuck about missing children. But he's never heard Torchline sound this fun, not in the whole... three or so days he's been here? The panic, the shouting, the fear, the occasional violence - he could start to like it here if this all keeps up. Having been enjoying some breakfast and soaking up the first of the sun's delicious rays, he sucks the grease from his fingers and rolls to his feet, following the sound of the chaos.

Only as someone jostles past him, calling a child's name, does he realise what exactly must have happened. Picking at his teeth with a sliver of a chicken bone, Danta huffs under his breath. "I wasn't aware one could misplace their spawn," he remarks, mostly to himself, before lifting a small rock on the beach as if a child might be hiding beneath it. He's helping, see.

Esmerelda
One minute Esmerelda was walking through the night market with her little brother Dominik. The next? The little brat was nowhere to be seen. After a mad rush to find him, and the panic of having to tell their parents that Yes, they did sneak out to play, yes, she lost her little brother, no she didn't know where he went the young Attuned had sought out in the morning equally worried as she was infuriated.

It was as Esmerelda was arriving that she heard Dantalion's comment. "Apparently they make us older siblings do it for them." The teen scoffed and kicked a rock into the water, "Little shit ran off and guess who has to find him? Not mum, not pa. Me. Of course."

She flickered reptilian eyes over the landscape before addressing the Ancient again, "You got any ideas of where someone might hide children? I only know where to hide booze."

Accusations fly as more and more parents come to understand the situation. Some blame their neighbors. Some blame the Ancients. Some simply blame the gods (though one god in particular did come up with this game).

Anger leads to desperation, and soon panicked parents are breaking down doors all over the city, searching anywhere they can. The crowd, soon to become a mob, breaks into every inn, store, and warehouse they can find...anyplace big enough that they might find their missing children there. But none have any success, and desperation is quickly building towards the brink of violence.

Meanwhile, Trinket shushes the crying children in the tunnels. "Shh, don't be scared. It's just a game? Some of you might die, but not all of you. Probably."

For some reason, her words just make the children cry more. They cling to each other in fear. Some start moving towards the tunnels, but with no light, they soon return to the group. They don't want to play this game anymore. But Trinket can't let the game stop now. She has to see who wins.

The tide slowly starts to come in, the water lapping around the childrens' ankles.

---

Panic continues to build in the streets. The children continue to cry. No one is close to winning the game. It's your turn to play.

Nine strikes
Darkeye had needed some distance from the Grounds and had retreated here to the water. With a view of the beach, he had enjoyed the evening very much and then went to bed. But when the shouting of the people became louder, he stood in bed. He got dressed and hurried down to the streets. He asked some passersby what was going on. When he was in the picture, he gathered as many people as possible to divide them into groups. He tried to set up a place where the information was gathered. Maybe they could narrow down the area. Or someone had seen something.

Esmerelda
"Well shit." This was a mess, now, wasn't it? "Listen up! Three groups. One for land, one for sea, and one for sky. Split up and cover as much ground as possible." Esmerelda called into the crowd. "I'm heading for sea. If you're coming, then come on!"

With that as her warning, Esmerelda shifted into the form of a coral reef snake and slipped into the water. She then began to use the snake's senses to try and pick up on her missing brother. Hopefully the little shit was near water, and she'd be able to pinpoint him from there. Otherwise, the land and sky teams (if they formed) might have more luck.

"Ooh, booze," Danta says even as he's straightening up, making it clear that he's only really taken one thing from whatever Esmerelda is saying. Only they're not playing hide and seek with booze, as it happens, and while chaos continues to reign, the Ancient flicks his chicken bone absently into the sand while people do boring shit like organise groups and try to save lives.

But he supposes he can enjoy the party from a little higher up - all this jostling about and screeching from the parents is making him horny, anyway. "I will take the skies," he announces, before promptly shifting into the form of a Gore Crow and taking flight. Soaring overhead, Danta keeps his beady eyes peeled for anything that might look fun.

Danta chooses the skies, and starts his search in his Gore Crow shift!

Multiple people flock to Darkeye as he works to get things organized. In the chaos, it seems everyone is desperate for any slight sense of leadership, and ready to follow anyone who looks like they're in charge, Torchliner or not. For the most part, people report that they've seen nothing but empty beds and unlocked doors. But those who actually saw something in the night report seeing a herd in the shadows of the night moving towards the shore.

Esmerelda isn't able to pick out her brother's scent--there's just too many scents clustered together--but the sheer number of smells of passing humans tells her a large group of people did indeed pass by the beach.

Dantalion, on the other hand, sees more than one interesting thing, but it depends on his personal definition of "fun." Throughout the city, he sees no signs of children, but there are quite a few people breaking into buildings in search of their offspring; if looting and rioting are his idea of fun, there's plenty to be had. Otherwise, the most notable thing he sees is a large number of dense tracks leading along the shore towards the cliffs, impossible to miss from a bird's-eye view. It looks like hundreds of pairs of feet trudged along, heading in the same direction.

Trinket, inside the tunnels, leaned her lantern pole against a wall. She noticed that the water was coming up to her knees. She wondered, briefly, if she was going to drown. Drowning would probably be interesting, she thought. But she didn't want to try it just yet.

"Let's play another game while we wait for the grown ups to find us," she told the children. "Who knows a good game we can play?"

But none of the children stepped forward. None of them wanted to play. A pity. With nothing left to do but wait, she simply studied the eyes of the children. Fear was such a curious thing.

Darkeye learns that figures in the night were headed towards the shore.
Esmerelda picks up the scent of a large group of people moving near the water.
Dantalion spots a large number of tracks leading through that same area.

Darkeye
Nine strikes
Darkeye put a few people down and takes some of the people with him to search at the Shore. Who should kidnap children who would do such a stupid thing. Had the people not suffered enough. Someone had a very evil cult here? Or was it someone with a very questionable sense of humor. No matter what it was the children had to be saved. Darkeye was not amused by children who were kidnapped, and it remained to be seen if there was anyone left to receive the punishment. It was obvious that the flood would come. He calculated one and one together. Maybe they had fled with a bott. Whether he could help the people here, he did not know. But it should not end as then in the Grounds. He used his axes to move forward faster. Maybe he could find traces. Haste was called for.

Esmerelda
Esmerelda is nearly overwhelmed by the number of individual scents. But given how many smell young and afraid, she thinks she's on the right track. The snake continues to cut though the water, picking up speed. The tide would be coming in soon and if the children were too close to the water, things could get dangerous.

She has no idea if anyone took up her idea to search from multiple angles, but hopefully at least one of the people up above were intelligent enough to see the merit to it.  The scent led her through a curve suddenly, and the young Attuned carried on, hoping that she was getting close.

but you can't be free
Danta is finding it fun, watching the people of Torchline squabble and loot and cause general chaos, and he's wondering if this will have any wider fallout when something else catches his eagle crow eyes. He almost misses it, such is his enjoyment, but once he does spot it, it's hard to ignore.

And so, tilting into the wind and gliding lower, he waits until he's sure he's in earshot of Esmerelda and Darkeye before croaking out a "Tracks!" and propelling forward. If they want to follow him, he'll lead them right along the ever-so-obvious markings in the sand. And if not, maybe there'll be a crab to snatch up and take as a snack.

Between the tracks and the scent, it's easy enough to follow the path towards the end. But where the trail ends is more difficult. A tunnel leads into Rae's Fingers, down through the volcanic tunnels that permeate the islands of Torchline.

But the footsteps and the smells have been washed away by the rising tides, now well up past one's knees, and even higher for the smaller children inside. With no more footprints to follow while trudging through the waters, there seems to be no clear indication of where to go, and time is quickly running out.

Deep in the tunnels, Trinket encourages the bigger children to pick up some of the smaller ones, carrying them piggyback or holding them up with their arms. The waters are getting high enough to be a risk to the little ones, and Trinket doesn't want them to die yet. It would be no fun for some of the hiders to die before the seekers arrive. Either all of them will be saved, or none of them will.

---

The group arrives at the entrance to Rae's Fingers. With footprints washed away by the tide, another means must be found to search the tunnels.

Lead them he does, it seems, and Danta finds himself perched quite happily on the very edges of one of the openings to Rae's Fingers. Shifting along the rock like some clumsy, noble raven, he settles his feathers and bends right over, as if he can peep into the tunnels upside down. Of course this, does very little to help anything, but he's an Ancient and whatever is in there looks cold and dark and wet.

So uh. No. He won't be getting his tootsies wet, thank you very much.

"Dark!" He croaks to Darkeye and Esmerelda as they approach, as if this might be some new information for them. Look how helpful he's being!

Esmerelda
Esmerelda arrives at the Fingers and scowls as much as a snake can. The scent is gone and there aren't footprints. With two senses blocked she tries to use another. Dantalion is being useless so the Attuned takes things into her own hands once more. The snake slithers ashore and begins to shift.

Within a short time, there stands a tide jaguar. Newly shifted, the Attuned uses her feline form's hearing for anything. Maybe crying children or footsteps, or abnormal movements. Esmerelda tries to block out the normal sounds of the Fingers and determine just where to go to find her brother.
