It starts as a rumour rolling across King's End, at first, but it isn't long before travellers to and from the region are whispering about it too. Snowballs. Out in the Barrows.

Now I know what you're thinking. That's stupid, or well duh, have you seen King's End at Deepfrost? But listen, Linda - these particular snowballs seem to have no origin; either that or whoever is throwing them is able to yeet them from miles out.

Even skyships have been battered by them, regardless of how high up they might be flying.

So there's only one thing for it. Some idiots intrepid explorers will have to come and investigate.

WELCOME TO THE DROP!

You have 48 hours to post your character arriving at the Barrows.

PLEASE NOTE: Entry into this Drop will fulfil the snowball fight requirement of the Deepfrost SE!

Things hadn't been going great for Tal lately, on a whole lot of levels, so he'd had ample reason to accept deliveries heading for outside of Halo this season. Some letters were being sent to those who'd stayed in Wrenzoak's Refuge after the war and it was there that Tal had heard the rumors.

What the hail, why not? The last thing he needed was anything happening to the Peregrine and if something was hauling big ass snowballs at skyships Tal wanted to figure out why, where, and how to keep his beloved skyboat away from the area!

So it was that the courier and his dragon traveled to the Barrows on foot. Did someone ask for an idiot to investigate? Crunching over the snow, the dark-haired young man pulled his Goggles down and looked around suspiciously for any signs of mischief afoot while Boreal bounded happily after blink hares nearby.

I carried my own ashes to the mountains
The Sword, when not absorbed into melancholy, war, anguish, or despair, could be finagled into mischief quite readily. So when word upon the air hastened about snowballs, uncontrolled at that, they provided and presided just the right angles of foolishness and curiosity to instigate and unfurl his rationale for flying in that direction. Perhaps it was something new for the Guild to unravel. Maybe he was far too nosey.

Belial, also content with antics, accompanied him on the singular flight, before they both hastened in a downward spiral towards the wide-open field, bag clutched in talons. Shifting as soon as he landed, aware that he’d be a formidable target considering his size and height, both companion and Warden began to sidle their way towards the closest rock.

Like some child possessed, the beast howls in my veins
Melita had been considering dropping something off for Sunjata along the refuge. Considering being the optimal word, because she didn’t know what her uncle needed or required, and the bitter, petty portion of her being couldn’t quite fathom extending a hand anytime soon.

Instead, she ended up wandering amid supposed snowballs being flung for no real reason (other than…winter…and honestly, why not?). Embracing the edges of chaos and not giving a fuck either way, the Honeybee shrugged her shoulders and carried on, striving to see if there was a way to investigate, or…participate. You know. Make it all a little worse.

Lena
hope is the thing with feathers
that perches in the soul
The Caretaker had been in King’s End anyway, with a dash of silliness, curiosity, and some manner of scholarly insights, had meandered towards the subject matter at hand. She couldn’t recall Stormbreak citizens being overly fond of snowball fights – some far too serious, some far too consumed by other tasks, and some far too distracted by endeavors for the beyond. Lena probably should’ve been in at least the latter two, but she wasn’t an individual to waste an opportunity either.

She followed the whispers and topic at hand, lingering along the edges of the Barrows – amidst the throngs of hills and graves, hand over her eyes to shield them, and maybe, catch sight of where the mounds of snow were coming from.

What was there to do for a demigod who's main purpose (at least as he knew it thus far) was finished? The ascended had been taken care of, the Voice and Core gone, and it left Noah a little jittery. He had focused the last year on making sure Halo was as safe and comfortable for the people as possible, readying his home for the onslaught of children, and loving dearly on his wife.

But when he heard of the snowballs? He called over his mother in law and headed out. Between his compass, his teleportation magic, and his own feet, the journey was not too bad. Noah noticed as Deimos descended with Belial, and the hunter gave him a wave. Talyson, too, received a wave as Noah noticed him. "Find anything suspicious?" he asked loudly, generally, an eyebrow lifting in tow.

Come down from your fences
Snowballs? Out in the barrows?

It's with a world-weary sigh that Morgen finishes the last dregs of his too-strong coffee and saddles up Sweets. "Alright. Let's see what all the fuss is about." So saying he mounts up and rides out towards the Barrows where a small crowd has already formed. Cozy in his sheep-skin jacket and with his hat pulled all the way down, the wrangler surveys those in attendance. Only Lena was familiar, and, should she look his way, Morgen would offer her a polite nod and smile.

Remaining on the outskirts if only because he was mounted, the man reaches down to give Sweets' shoulder an appreciative pat which she acknowledged with the pinning of her ears.

The rivers had  provided passage through the Barrows to the Refuge for his people before the War. The fresh water roads still served the Mer and Hadama made it a point to occasionally check in on those who had chosen to remain in the Refuge even after the War had ended. His manta form was unsuitable for such confined waterways, however, and so the merman swam in his more usual form after aquaporting to the river's mouth at the Boondocks.

His decision to join the Academy that Evie had described to him had come with the unexpected benefit of no longer feeling the chill in these northern waters, which he appreciated as he moved past snowy fields and beneath large stretches of ice on the river's surface. Coming up in a clear section to check his progress he was surprised to see a gathering of people out on the white plain, including Melita and Lena.

He swam towards shore, intending to greet them, but was nearly struck by a stray snowball.

Hmm.

Sah
What is knowledge without wisdom?
Sah wasn't sure to make of the snowballs. He'd first heard about them form rumors. But then he'd become acquainted with then when they struck the skyship he'd been riding. After that mess, he'd decided to investigate the source of the wayward projectiles. Arriving with Lilly and Pad in tow, he scanned the people who seemed to share his goal.

The two wolves at his side had their ears up, swiveling constantly as they sniffed the air for anything out of the ordinary. Sah meanwhile let his magic bubble beneath his skin, ready to be used at a moment's notice should anything occur. Caido's history of bizarre events was enough to make him wary of strange snow.

Edmund had been curious, too curious about the reports of random snowballs to stay away. He knew it was a risk and that he may run into people who recognized him. But snow didn't pair well with a molten tiger shift, so he came as he was. With a hood pulled up to cover his face, the young Ancient arrived. He felt a shiver go down his spine when he recognized Noah but made no move to acknowledge or approach the man.

Swallowing harshly, Edmund stayed on the fringes of the growing crowd, his eyes flickering around to take everything in. It was cold, not unbearably so, but enough that it had him restless.

kaiden

There is no shame in survival
Only strength

Kaiden scowled as they swam towards the shore. There were far too many people present. Far too many. But wayward snowballs had been interrupting their hunts and it had finally driven the mershark to address the situation themselves. Spotting Hadama, Kaiden reluctantly swam over, sure that the King would have answers. What's going on?

Because what kind of King wouldn't know the details of a threat his people were facing? And yes, anything that kept Kaiden from dinner was a threat. Even snowballs. Their tail thrashed behind them as they waited for answers, glaring at anyone that got too close to the shore and the mers who were present.

Maeve

Now the Nightshade hasn’t originally intended on investing the mysterious snowball phenomenon, but when deciding to venture away from Torchline in an attempt to do another search for her missing son, desperately hoping he might be unable to resist the call as many people often did when strange things happen in Caido; she set off. Truthfully, Maeve didn’t expect to get so lucky. Her attention isn’t even on him at first, eyes flicking over the gathering crowd, noting those she recognizes and giving them nods of acknowledgment when Aidon’s sudden screech draws her attention. The dragon scents him in seconds, diving towards the prodigal prince with such speed he is sure to plow right into him and knock him into the ground.

Maeve is there first. A mixture of relief, anger, and incredulity at war inside her and vying for the dominating emotion. She descends on him from behind, yanking his hood off before grabbing him by his upper arm, turning him around so sharply he’s sure to lose his balance. ”And where in the hell do you think you’ve been? Do you have any idea how worried sick I’ve been? You disappear without a single trace. Don’t even have the decency to write once you get wherever you’re going and let me know you’re okay! Gods, Edmund! Did you even stop to think??” There are tears stinging her eyes and she’s aware of the people around her, but she can’t find it in herself to care about it not being the time or the place.

Maeve arrives, spots her missing son, and does what any mother would do.

Darkeye
Nine strikes
Darkeye wanted to explore the area again and so much had happened recently. He just had to get away from the Grounds and think. Many had not accepted his invitation. So he had to think about his next steps. But when he just thought lost dürch Kings End moved already some snowballs flew past him. He looked for cover and did not know how serious the whole thing was. He tried to look for cover behind a slightly thicker tree. He would first only observe. Was it time to fight? There was Melita... He hasn't talked to her for a long time. What will happen? Even Maeve what the hell is happening here.

Darkeye lands in Kings End.

Oh, Hadama, don't be silly. You aren't nearly struck by a snowball - one catches you right in the side of the head, splat. Don't worry though, you're not alone; Sah and Darkeye are similarly bombarded, and in the distance, the gathered group might swear they hear the sound of... marching?

Surely that can't be right.

Either way, whether on foot or by icy river, should you choose to follow the sounds, you will find yourselves on quite a trek. Up steady inclines, around snowbanks and through thickets of pines, the marching continues. Until it doesn't.

There is ample ammo in the form of freshly fallen flurries, and plenty of places to hide. Nothing has assaulted you yet, but who knows what might be lurking nearby? Do you attack or defend?

(Oh, and Edmund? Don't feel bad about being caught out - as the only Ancient present in a snowfield, you'll get to feel firsthand just how bad an idea it was to come. You're sluggish and a bit sleepy, and you'll find it difficult to move through the terrain.)

Make your choice! You have 48 hours.
