For once, her impulses drove her to kindness, rather than pettiness. A difficult persuasion for her mind, perhaps, but given circumstances, losses, and everything else, the youth found herself wandering down the markets of Torchline, in pursuit of materials for a care package. The intent was to eventually send it to her uncle, or whomever else needed it, amidst the shelter in King’s End.

She kicked a few rocks out of her way as she sauntered, perusing, out of her usual rapid demeanor. Fangorn and Sila both seemed grateful for the reprieve of racing after the Honeybee, with the dragon settled on her shoulder, and the gourd waving his vines at various passersby.

She wasn’t even certain if she was still mad at him. The emotions were hard to parse through, and eventually, she ceased trying altogether – letting all the past grudges settle there in her chest, as she huffed and snagged at a blanket roll, beginning to haggle with the merchant.

The Peregrine was docked at the skyport while Tal made a delivery in Torchline, and in truth the courier was enjoying the Deepfrost temperatures on the coast a lot more than the ones on the Tundra right now. He was dragging his feet a little on the way back, doing a bit of browsing among the market stalls as Boreal trotted beside him, head up and eyes alert as she watched the people and companions around them.

But it was Tal who spotted the flaming head of red hair in the crowd, and the courier perked up immediately. Boreal's head turned as if on a swivel once she caught her human's interest and it was the dragon who shouldered her way through the crowd at hip-height, Tal trotted behind her until they could greet the Honeybee and her companions.

"Hey, Mel!" Tal chirped as Boreal crouched down to croon a hello of her own to Fangorn. "Hey, Sila! Long time no see!"

Through a sneer and some vague bullying with the promise of deals, the bedroll was acquired. Placing that within her bag, the youth shuffled forward, wrinkle to her nose and a certain parallel of sedition stuck to her face after the latest exchange – all muffled into a frustrated grumble when she heard the familiar tones of Talyson rampaging through the market. She could already feel the headache building.

In her most disinterested tone, her companions made up for it with waving vines or a flurry of wings, her features remained much the same. “Oh, hey Tal.” Brow furrowed, she fixed the bag along her shoulder again, and then consulted her list, crossing off one portion of the impending package. “What brings you to Torchline this time?”

Boreal's tail wagged happily in a serpentine slither at Fangorn's vines, smacking heedlessly into Tal's calf with each swipe. The courier winced and glanced down, trying to avoid it and missing Mel's pointed indifference yet again.

"Just the, um, th'usual," he answered, shuffling back a few steps to get out of the danger zone. He reached up to rub the back of his neck shyly, sneaking a glance at the Honeybee's bag from beneath shaggy dark hair. "Just finished a delivery. Figured I could do some shoppin' for LongNight treats while I'm here. What about you?" A shopping trip didn't seem like the kind of situation he could use to impress her, but he wouldn't know if he didn't try!

Oblivious to the bruise she'd given her human, Boreal then raised her head to chortle merrily up at Sila, admiring how the young dragon had grown since last they'd met.

Melita had no idea what the ‘usual’ consisted of, unless it was delivering things, so her brow quirked slightly from her list, before nodding along. “Getting stuff for my uncle,” and without much preamble, she turned towards the next kiosk, intending to snag at some tools that would probably help at the refuge. She gave no mention of why, or the nature of her relations and outskirts of family, and if Talyson were to ask, he’d probably only receive a sneer.

LongNight prompted some other feral sigh beginning to slide its way through her chest. Residual, from years of spending it within the Hollowed Grounds, even if the wake of its existence in Torchline was getting drunk beside bonfires. While the youth moved, her companions followed; Sila remaining perched and hesitant, Fangorn with his usual aplomb, bobbing behind the Honeybee.

Angling her way towards a merchant to begin the haggling process again, she only barely glanced back at the courier. “You guys get anymore LongNight monsters?” She hadn’t heard anything since the last one, after the Ascended had battled them, and with the Voice gone…maybe it was simply never going to occur again.

"Oh." Tal's usual eloquence sparkled like a dead firecracker in the air between them as he drifted along in the Honeybee's wake, trying to figure out a way to keep the conversation going. "That's really nice o'you." His fingers curled against his neck almost hard enough to scratch as he winced at his own awkwardness, but gamely kept up with her.

Boreal trotted along behind Fangorn until the scent of fresh fish caught her attention and she rumbled imperiously to her human. He hurried over to the stall next to the one Melita was currently haggling at and began a transaction of his own, looking over at her distractedly a few times until she spoke to him and he perked up for a second before realizing the meat of her question. A grimace twisted his features back to their more usual gloominess at the reminder, but at least he was able to shake his head in negation. "Nah, not for a couple o' years now. It's actually been pretty nice. Cold, yeah, but... quiet. 'S a good time for visitin' friends an' shit." Though the LongNight card games could get particularly cutthroat between family members.

"What's it like here?"

It might’ve been nice of her, or some other consideration and emotion she wasn’t eager, ready, or willing to pin down. Sunjata was a touchy subject for many individuals, and half the time she was more than eager to not mention him at all, or, alternatively, disparage his name. For the moment, she occupied herself with haggling and conversing with the merchants, bestowing a grin when she successfully bartered for several tools, and placed them beside the bedroll in her bag.

Raising her head to briefly glance at Talyson, as if remembering he was there, she then glanced back down at her list, scratching off another portion. The news of no more LongNight monsters made her nod, and if she was disappointed that there wouldn’t be anything to dispatch and maul, she didn’t voice it.

Instead, she arched her brow, shrugging her shoulders at his question. “We have bonfires and get drunk on the beach.”

Boreal received her large, fishy treat with dainty gravitas, then carried it over to Fangorn, plopping down on the cobblestones between the two stalls to share the fruits of her begging labors with her friends. She offered a welcoming croon to Sila as well, should the young dragon care to join them. Tal sighed ruefully at her, fondly exasperated, and then dove back into negotiations - this time for dried fish.

But his attention was only half on his haggling (and it showed, in the exchange of goods that took place thereafter) because the rest was on Melita and her local insights. Sure, LongNight wasn't the week of weather-enforced cabin fever it had been while he'd been growing up, but what she was describing was a step above even the current situation.

"Damn... that sounds pretty good, actually." He tucked the wrapped fish jerky into his bag before heading over to a fruit seller. "So, uh. What... what's your favorite thing t'drink?" He chewed his lip fiercely as he snuck a glance over his shoulder at her, barely paying attention to the pineapples in front of him.

Fangorn was all the more excited the moment the fish was offered – vines swinging, grumbles restored, acknowledgments and thank yous alive and well in those rumbling conjectures. Sila had yet to be coaxed, but her little snout continued to poke out from behind Melita’s hair, smelling at the food nearby.

Another set of haggling began, this time from the kiosk further down the path, for enough dried food portions to be useful during LongNight and whenever they required it within the refuge. Shrugging her shoulders again, and feeling Sila’s talons grip further into her shirt sleeves, another manner and matter of avoidance began to rear its head within her mind. “I’m not picky.”

'Not picky' just meant he couldn't go wrong, right? Wrong. Tal took the answer cheerfully and finished his purchase of spiny tropical fruits before snagging a few mangoes to go with them. Boreal huffed a quiet rumble of amusement at her human's oblivious optimism and nosed a choice bite of fish towards Sila before taking another dainty nibble of her own. The humans were still close enough to keep an eye on while they snacked and she made happy dragon noises at Fangorn while they shared their meal.

Tal considered the fruit a little longer before heaving a long-suffering sigh and handing over one more amber trinket as he took the biggest pineapple in the lot and hefted it. Did Evie even like pineapple? He had no idea, but since the cake had gotten kind of fucked up mid-delivery maybe something less squishable was in order.

Just his luck she'd end up being allergic to it, but hail, at least he could say he'd tried.

Adding a couple of coconuts to the order because Mel had him feeling generous, he stuffed his latest acquisitions in his bag and headed back over to her. "I, uh... I guess I should probably get goin' but... it was real nice seein' you." He rubbed the back of his neck, clearing his throat awkwardly. "I, um. I've been workin' real hard, like you said. Gettin' better. If y'ever want to spar sometime, just drop me a line."

Adorably confident in his improved abilities and upgraded godly gifts, the poor young fool had no idea how far out of his weight class Melita still punched.

Melita remained unaware of any of the courier’s thoughts, and continued along her shopping list. By the end of the interim, she’d snagged all the things she’d wanted to acquire that day, and could always send the parcel off tomorrow, once she’d placed everything together, and managed some form of explanation. Maybe a brief letter. Or perhaps just a ‘here you go’ and leaving it at that.

She raised her head at his indication of leaving, arching a fiery brow briefly, wondering if it would merely take her five minutes longer to beat him up now. “Yeah sure, maybe.” Casting the same indifferent shrug, she waved him off, permitting Sila and Talyson to extend their departures to their fellow companions, before meandering off in the direction of her house.
