The first day had seen several important tasks completed. The large tide pool had been given a proper entrance to the nearby canal, ensuring a constant flow of water to fill it even when the tide was out. A shielding dam of stone had been constructed at the edge of the pool closest to the ocean to protect it from tidal surges and storms. A second shallow basin had been dug on the land-side of the tidal pool to accommodate human diners. And anchoring holes for the roof posts had been sunk into the rocky shore, courtesy of the human Earth magic wielder who was assisting with the construction.

But there was still a great deal left to do. The sun had set on the short Deepfrost day before they had managed to get any work done on the roof, and most of the denizens of the tide pool - fish, starfish, anemones, nudibranches, etc. - still remained.

Breakfast had been provided today, in the hopes of luring more helping hands to the project. Fresh fruit and crispy pastries had been laid out on low tables reachable from the water. while just beneath the pool's surface were kelp-wrapped tidbits of savory fish and sweet seaberry compote, a selection of sushi, and small boxes holding light seaweed salads for easy grab-and-go.

"Thank you for coming," the mermanta said gravely to those who came back for a second day of work - and those just showing up for the first time. "First, we will need to move the creatures still living in the inlet to new homes." The tide pool was quite large and there were a great many creatures that called it home, all needing relocation. He nodded to those gathered and waited for them to choose tasks before he went to help wherever it was needed most.

Take 2 of the PQ to build a land/seafood fusion cafe!

1. Hadama
2. Kaiden
3. Darkeye
4.

Round 1!

Pick your task:
1. Catch the fish (however you want) and/or chase them out of the pool if you can! They're harmless but fast and agile!
2. Collect the anemones and nudibranches to be moved to other tide pools nearby. They move slow, but watch out for stings and toxins!
3. Sea stars sand dollars, and starfish also need to be relocated. They're safe to touch, but fairly fragile. Try not to damage them!

*tasks can have more than one character helping; NPCs can pick up the slack. No posting order!

DARKEYE
Not the strongest win the battle —
Darkeye didn't know why but he wanted to help. IM was helped so he wanted to give it back as he volunteered here. He didn't know how to help but listened carefully to the manta and as soon as he was told what to do he undressed and started diving as well as swimming. Used the axes to teleport and tried very carefully to transport the sea stars. Always with great caution, he set about it, pausing every now and then to fill his lungs with air. It remains to be seen whether this collaboration would bear fruit. Sure he hoped that some of the menfolk would help him to find find out what was in the Black see but this was a question to ask for later. Now he needs to help the people here first. After that comes the grounds

Reluctantly, Kaiden arrived at the future cafe yet again. The first day had been tiring but getting free food later would make it worth it. Free food now was already a bonus. The mershark dug in enthusiastically while they waited for Hadama to give out the tasks.

Chasing and capturing fish? The mershark was built for that. They nodded and shifted forms, beginning to scare and chase the fish out of the pool. It was a tight fit at times, but the mershark was agile, even in this form. And even the densest of fish knew to avoid a shark when it was headed straight for them.

Hadama nodded at Darkeye, and was grateful for his help. He didn't know the man, but he was impressed at how quickly Darkeye jumped in and worked to move the fragile starfish. His teleporting axes were perfect for the job, and he was able to move many of the small sea stars to new homes in other tide pools. The work was slow because he had to move one at a time, but only a few starfish were damaged.

He also noticed Kaiden raiding the breakfast bar and only kept his amusement out of the telepathic bond due to long practice and innate discipline. Unsurprisingly, the young rogue chose the task they were best at, but things didn't go quite as smoothly for them. They were large and scary and full of teeth, yes, but these fish were small and extremely agile. When the shark swam towards them they fled sideways rather than straight ahead, making herding them extremely difficult. They also would dodge behind and beneath the bodies of the other people in the pool who were moving other sea creatures. Kaiden was only able to chase half of the fish out this time.

That left Hadama to move the anemones and nudibranches. He borrowed a pair of gloves from one of the workmen and used his water magic to direct steady streams of water at the anemones' feet until they got annoyed enough to detach from the rocks they had anchored to. Then he collected them in his gloved hands and swam them to other nearby tide pools where they wouldn't be in the way of the cafe's customers. However, the nudibranches proved more elusive. Although the gloves protected him from their poison they were too bulky for him to pick the small, delicate creatures up with easily. They wedged themselves into cracks in the rock walls where his large fingers couldn't reach.

Do not give up, he encouraged Kaiden as much as himself.

When he rose above the water and saw that Darkeye had finished he pointed towards the piles of wood and tools. "Thank you. Can you also help with the roof?"

Round 2!
Kaiden and Hadama need to spend a little more time at their tasks, or they can come up with a new approach to their problems!

Darkeye can choose to either:
1. Make cement (to anchor the roof supports)
2. Construct the roof frame (using Holzstämme that are beside the pool)
or 3. Weave together palm leaves to make the roof thatch (strohdach)

Darkeye nodded and started to cut the logs on the side of the roof. They had to withstand quite a bit of the water that would keep hitting them. They should not rot quickly. That's why he had to debark them first. After that, he sanded them thoroughly. But now came the most important step. He sprinkled them with a mixture of honey and charcoal to make them more resistant to the weather and water. So they had to dry for a while before they could be used. The frame had to be very resistant. He didn't want it to break down again and do a bad job.

Snarling internally, Kaiden shifted back to their normal form. They weren't as scary now, but they were significantly more agile. They sent a quick burst of agreement through the bond to Hadama before refocusing on their task. The mershark doubled down on the fish, twisting sharply to cut them off from escaping past them, and even making grabs at them with their hands.

It wasn't as satisfying to deal with the fish in mer form, but perhaps it'd be more effective. One particularly colorful fish tried to move past them and Kaiden tried to swat them away with the back of their hand. These fish were stubborn to say the least.

Darkeye was very good at working with wood. He was careful and he made the roof frame smooth and strong. The Torchers were impressed by his knowledge, and the use of honey and charcoal to make the wood weather resistant. His efforts were very successful, and the frame was completed without any problems.

While the dwarf worked on construction, Hadama and Kaiden continued their efforts to relocate the sea life out of the cafe. The mershark was just not having a good day, it seemed. When Kaiden chased after one fish, three others would swim around him and back into the pool. It wasn't until a pair of humans with a large net jumped into the water and began trawling the fish out that, together, they all managed to finally clear the pool of fish.

Hadama had to resort to his water magic again to move the sea slugs. He created powerful, tiny currents to push or pull the stubborn, poisonous creatures into his gloved hands and then deposited them in jars of sea water until they could be moved to more distant tide pools. Though he was successful eventually, it took the entire time that Darkeye was working on the roof.

When the King finished he looked around, seeing that the others had finished or were nearly done. "We have earned a lunch break," he rumbled approvingly. "When you are rested, we can start weaving the leaves for the roof. The blocks to separate wet and dry sides of the cafe are ready to be placed. As are the support beams."

The foundation had been laid. Now the cafe could really start taking shape!

Round 3!

Take a small lunch break and then back to work:

1. Weave together palm leaves to make the roof thatch (strohdach)
2. Place the glass blocks that have been provided in order to build a wall through the center of the tide pool (currently underwater). There is a strong sealant that can be used underwater to stick the blocks permanently together.
3. Put the roof timbers in their holes and cement them in place. (the roof frame will go on top of them later)

Feel free to use NPCs to help if you need to!

DARKEYE
Darkeye took a bite of the food and was happy about what he had achieved so far. He did not think it would be so good. While he ate he thought about how he should approach the whole thing with the straw roof. The walls were standing. He would put them on the other way around because the underside would repel the water. That much he knew about the plants. Deimo's book on this was helpful. He laid down several branches, sometimes crosswise, sometimes lengthwise, and then began to lay the leaves loosely on top. When he liked it that way, he numbered them and put all the leaves down again. Then he started to put each of these leaves on the branches and fix them. Sometimes he pulled with the ropes over the crosses that made the branches thread through with a thin needle and sewed them so firmly. Then the upper and lower end. The whole thing he would do three times that one could be sure that it was tight. He also put it slightly askew so that in case of rain or strong waves no moisture could collect. He would also from the bamboo that still lies there in small tiles to make these like roof panels.

The fish were surprisingly bold and stubborn, much to Kaiden's annoyance. It took far longer than they'd have liked to clear the pool. Once it was done, the mershark grumpily ate snack until it was time to keep working. Darkeye moved towards the roof so Kaiden turned their attention to the walls.

Taking the glass blocks and sealant, the mershark attempted to create a sturdy wall that could hold the weight of the building and any waves from the sea. Block by block they built, making an effort to not make the wall lean. They did have to redo a few places as they worked, hastily ripping blocks off before the sealant could set.

Darkeye took a different approach to the roof than most Torchers were expecting. The people murmured to each other but when they saw that it looked strong and dry they began to help. The roof began to come together. It was sturdy and unique in Torchline, and when Hadama came to see it he nodded in satisfaction. "Thank you. This is well done."

While Darkeye worked on the roof, other humans moved around in a small crew to set the supports into the holes in the ground. While three people held a beam steady, a fourth person poured the concrete around its base. There were several supports, but with each one the team became more confident and efficient. Soon the tall timbers stood sprouting from the stony shore like strange trees without branches.

Hadama and several other Mer joined Kaiden in placing the glass blocks. It only needed to rise as tall as the water in the tide pool; the intention was to separate the underwater diners from the airbreathing ones while letting them eat at the same level. Kaiden's persistence was welcome, and after the experience of Ray's clinic, Hadama chose to work with the mershark personally while the other merfolk started from the other side. The work went smoothly enough until they reached the middle, and the more complex design there caused several difficulties. It should curve out into the dry side - here, Hadama explained, indicating the line etched into the rock by the architect. And into the pool - here. Reminiscent of a yin-yang symbol with two gaps at its equator, the odd design would allow a Mer bartender to serve drinks to humans, and a human bartender to serve Mer.

But it would take one last push of effort to make the blueprint a reality.

Round 4!
Almost done!

1. Raise the roof! Work with the NPCs to lift the new roof onto the support pillars!
2. Finish the central bar area with the glass blocks. The design curves and will take an extra effort to complete successfully.

The advantage of bamboo was. He is light. Yet stable. Something water would not much matter and he could when he wanted to quickly make new. You could still make the other roof over it. He just thought it would be more stable that way. It had to withstand strong weather conditions. As long as the people were happy, he didn't care how it looked. Here it was a matter of being practical.

With a little help, he put the roof on the structure and applied some clay to the leaves so that the bamboo would be in the right position. The whole thing would take some time. After the whole thing was dry, he put ropes around it again to secure the whole thing again. After that, another layer of leaves was laid over it. It would help to keep the inside dry.

Kaiden had a feeling as to why Hadama sought them out from the get-go. It was annoying to be baby-sat but they'd tolerate it for not. It kept annoying NPCs away and out of their business. They nodded at the King's instructions and the wall came up smoothly. Loathe as they were to admit it, the other mer was better at construction then them. Much to their displeasure they'd come to realize over the season that the King surpassed them on far too many accounts. It was frustrating.

Darkeye continued on the roof and Kaiden returned once more to the glass blocks. The curve was tricky and the mershark did their best to keep the transition smooth. Every time they got frustrated, they just had to remind themselves that this was for a place to eat, and food was worth it.

Darkeye was very strong and he was able to lead the team that lifted the roof into place. The other humans helped with the heavy structure and they followed Darkeye's example in securing the bamboo tiles in place. A few of them started to weave extra palm fronds to cover the bamboo and the rest went around securing the underside of the roof to the wooden supports.

Kaiden and Hadama made a good team (surprising a few of the other Merfolk who knew the mershark). The King was an artisan before he was a ruler and his large hands were deft and sure in the placement of the blocks. It was made easier with Kaiden's assistance in handling the adhesive, and with the other team helping they soon finished the bar that separated the wet and dry halves of the cafe.

Hadama looked across the expanse of the wide tide pool which was now bisected by a wall of glass block that rose a few inches above the surface like a reef of ice. Reaching for his magic, he began to lift the water out of the landward side of the pool and transfer it to the canal where it could join the outgoing tide. Soon the cafe was looking like a recognizable restaurant, though it was still missing a few things...

"We will need tables and chairs for the human side," he rumbled, nodding to Darkeye. "And tables of driftwood or stone for the Mer." That would not float away or be moved by the gentle currents coming from the canal. "We will hang walls made of slatted wood that can be rolled up in good weather," he added, looking to the gathered humans with a respectful nod of his head.

Last round!

1. Chairs and tables for humans
2. Tables for Mer
3. Making and hanging wall sections of wood slats that can be rolled up or down depending on the weather

Tables and chairs nothing was easier than that. He took some of the wood and started to sand the table top first. It should become a beautiful table. First practical. He could embellish it later. It should be stable for now. That is important. Likewise the chairs. Also here stable and simple. The chairs as well as the table he would connect with cross braces. Everything should be sleeved. That it felt like a butt of a freshly born. One should be comfortable. Then he would line them with sheepskins. That it is comfortable for the people.
