Mature Content Warning
The sky was dark, but this year the streets were less empty than in previous LongNights. Lanterns lit the black, bobbing along here and there as people ventured out to visit friends and family thanks to the protection of the Dome and the post-Voice, post-War (post-monster?) peace that had descended upon Caido.

Tal slipped like a shadow through the dark, needing no light while he wore his Goggles. He wasn't really feeling like talking to his neighbors or being recognized as he made his way through the snowy streets to a house he'd first visited ... was it three years back, already? It hardly seemed possible, but the previous year of rebuilding had come and gone in a blink. He barely remembered what they'd talked about last LongNight (though the bottle of extremely high-proof vodka might have had something to do with that).

One had been a whim. Twice had been the start of a habit. This year made three times, and something like a tradition. The one night a year it wasn't weird to let his hackles down and just talk with someone his own age.

He knocked lightly at the door of Sah's house with his free hand - the equally traditional vodka bottle in the other - while Boreal leaned against his hip and grumbled happily at getting to see Lily and Pad again.

Trigger Warning
Sah
What is knowledge without wisdom?
As anonymously promised, Sah ensured that his cupboard had a bottle of whiskey, as well as some rum.  With Tal bringing vodka, the duo might end up needing to seek out Evie later for healing. Granted, that was assuming they were still conscious. But perhaps this year they'd show adult restraint and pace themselves.

Sah sat at the dining table as he waited. He hadn't confirmed with Talyson if he was coming, the Wild Thunder knew that his fellow Halovian would show. Hopefully, with cookies in hand. He was soon disappointed as he responded to the knock. Eyes running Tal over he smirked, "No cookies this time?"

Still, he moved to let the courier in. Lilly ran out the door immediately and tackled Boreal with a happy bark. Pad trailed her silently, ears flicking at the display with clear disdain. Leading Talyson to the table, Sah grabbed two glasses and placed them down.

Tal just looked smug and lifted the jug admonishingly. "Dinner first, then dessert," he stated with mock gravitas. The cookies were safely tucked away where they wouldn't get crushed by an overly-playful dragon or wolf and weren't coming out until the first round of drinks were on the table.

Besides, vodka was made from potatoes, and potatoes were totally a dinner food! And whiskey was basically just distilled grain, right?

...He probably wasn't going to remember much from this LongNight, either, now that he thought about it for a minute.

Not that it bothered Tal in the slightest. He made his way past the playfully wrestling wolf and dragon and tickled Pad's ear fondly as he followed Sah to the kitchen. Taking the opposite seat and pouring the first pair of shots, Tal lifted his glass to the man across the table and grinned. "Here's to us surviving another year!"

Sah snorted as he sat at the table, "If you say so." Even though he kind of wanted to tackle Tal and get to the cookies now, he didn't want to crush them. He'd indulge the courier for now.  Pad let out a grumble but allowed Tal the honor of scratching his ear without being bitten. The man at least had enough respect to greet him when entering his pack's den.

Raising his glass, Sah clinked it against Tal's, "To another year, and more to come." Toast done, the Abandoned downed his shot and took a breath as the alcohol's burn traveled through him. It was definitely good that the pups were at Ilma's tonight. They didn't need to see what their father looked like drunk off his ass.

Given that Tal was far more likely to greet canines than people, Pad had nothing to worry about. He would not, however, be getting any of the booze that the young men were planning to pound back that night unless things went further off the rails than they anticipated.

Which was unlikely but not impossible given the competitive nature of the two humans in question.

The opening toast was made and glasses clinked, and the courier tossed back his own drink with satisfaction. He slid his glass across the table towards Sah - it was the other man's turn to pour - and tilted his head (not unlike one of his dogs when they were curious) at him. "So what's the thing you're most wantin' to do next year?" Let the questions begin!

Sah
What is knowledge without wisdom?
Sah considered the question as he poured the next round, humming in thought. He'd achieved so many of his goals and wildest dreams in his stay in Caido already. Regaining his magic, reuniting with his pups, who were alive, and building a home and family for them all in the icy walls of Halo.

Setting the glasses down, he swirled the alcohol as he answered, "I want to keep working on the Academy of course." He'd poured his heart and soul into Hotaru's dream, and he was damn proud of it. "But I think...I want to learn how to forge magical items and weapons." Water, air, fire, earth, and creation. He already had three of them, and although he had yet to master most, it wasn't inconceivable to picture himself mastering them all. Deimos had shown him numerous times how valuable the ability to do so was.

Throwing the shot back he let out a breath and turned the question on Tal, "What about you?"

Tal didn't hate Sah's habit of humming when he was thinking something over, but he'd be damned if he admitted it. Instead he pretended to ignore it while he waited for the hunter to gather his thoughts, resting his eyes on the nearby fire and watching the dance of flames. His fingers toyed with the glass between them, restless at being inside again after spending so much time there already this week.

The Academy brought a twitch to Tal's lips; neither a smile nor a frown but a bit of both. It mattered a lot to Ru - and yes, Sah too - but it was a world he'd never be part of and couldn't help with. Which fuckin' sucked, but he'd been learning some hard lessons about jealousy and he wasn't about to let those feelings see the light of day this time.

"Makin' stuff would be pretty cool," he conceded, the grin finally winning out as he looked back to Sah. "'specially magic stuff. Maybe you could finally make the girls a magic chew toy that'd last more than two days!" He glanced back at the happily tussling companions, fondly exasperated with Boreal's habit of thoroughly destroying anything she could fit in her mouth that satisfied her need to crunch things. Which wasn't too often, thankfully, but he'd pulled the weirdest stuff out of her teeth before.

He probably should have expected the return volley but when it came it caught him off guard. His gaze dropped to the table, brows knitting together as the habitual scowl fell back over his face while he thought. "Um. I've actually been thinkin' that maybe it's time to reclaim Whitebrim. Or, well, try, at least. The Waystation's out there, but I'm gonna get some folks together an' see if we can't make a start at rebuildin' it, come Flowerbirth." He picked his glass up, looking back to Sah with a wry smile. "Been thinkin' about movin' out on my own for awhile now. Hopefully this'll be the year it actually happens." He tossed back his drink and exhaled a puff of satisfaction from his mouth before reaching for the jug to pour round three.

What is knowledge without wisdom?
Sah snickered, warmly watching the companions play. "That would be something worthwhile. Maybe a toy that self-repaired." Maybe he could make it teleport to? A toy that they could always chase and could never destroy? No. The Abandoned doubted he was powerful enough to create such a thing.

Whatever the Wild Thunder had been expecting Tal to say, that wasn't it. Placing his glass down, he regarded the courier for a moment. "That's a worthwhile goal. If you need help, don't hesitate to ask." Sah vividly remembered the fall of Whitebrim. He'd been at the Citadel at the time, but the smoke in the distance and the sound of falling buildings had been clear as freshly fallen snow. Reclaiming and rebuilding it was certainly worth looking into.

A self-repairing toy? Tal laughed and Boreal paused to look back at him with a happy huff before turning her full attention back to play-growling with Lily. The two had found a long piece of antler that they were playing tug-of-war with and Tal gave a snort as something cracked in one of their jaws. "It better repair itself fast," he suggested helpfully, turning back to their conversation.

His amusement died away as his thoughts turned to Whitebrim and he admitted his plans to the hunter. His hands were steady as he poured the drinks, however. He'd half-expected his frenemy to offer to help - it was easier to both ask and accept such things in the shadows of LongNight - and Tal nodded grateful agreement. "Yeah. I'll let y'know," he accepted, voice a little gruff as he lifted his glass and swirled the clear liquid within, watching as it caught the light.

He closed one eye and looked through the shot glass at Sah beyond it, his grin returning as he tried to lighten the mood back up. "You're not slowin' down already, are ya?" he teased. "Your turn t'come up with a question for us t'answer!" And drink after they did!

What is knowledge without wisdom?
Sah snickered as there was another cracking noise, "Very fast." Pad wandered over and quick as the lightning his bonded wielded, snapped up a fallen antler from Boreal and Lilly's game before racing deeper into the house. There was a small racket as he skided around a corner and banged his hip into the wall.

Laughing under his breath at both wolf and man, Sah poured the next round. "Not in the least. You'll tap out before me. and you know it." Downing his shot to buy himself time to think, the Abandoned raised the next question. "Something dumb you did this year that will absolutely not be happening this one." With a smirk he added, "Try and choose one."

"Mine was making a bet with Ilma, Cordelia's aunt.
Sah eyed Tal severely, "Never, ever make a bet with that woman. It doesn't matter how slim the chances should logically be of you losing. You'll lose." Sah had bet with her when Cordelia and Noah would announce that they were expecting. Whoever was closest one. Sah was off buy two weeks. Somehow, Ilma bet the exact day.

Tal snickered silently to himself as Pad made his getaway with the stolen goods, but his grin as he toasted Sah a moment later was confidently sharp. "Not unless you've been practicin' without me." He was smug in his mastery of the bottle; he'd been drinking booze for longer than Sah had been human, and the amount that he drank might have been concerning if anyone had realized just how much it was in the last two years.

Brows went up, however, as Sah broke the night's unspoken truce for a jab at the courier. Tal eyed the hunter, unimpressed at his claim, and snorted inelegantly. "That's what you're goin' with? Okay." He tossed back his shot and exhaled the fumes with casual efficiency. "Remember Mr. Took, the butcher? I took a job from him without askin' enough questions first. 'One carcass, from Torchline t'Halo. ASAP.'" The courier glared morosely at his empty glass, the fingers of his other hand tapping an annoyed staccato rhythm on the tabletop. "Figured it was a rhampire or somethin'. No big deal. 'Cept the fucker had somehow got a deal with a whaling ship." That had been one nasty surprise when he'd gone to meet the broker. "The Peregrine couldn't carry it all, even chopped up. I had t'hire the biggest ship at th'skyport t'handle most of it, an' spent the next season tryin' t'dig myself back out o' the red." His ledger had not been pretty for awhile.

Reaching for the jug, he poured himself another round, waiting until Sah had actually drunk his before doing so for the hunter. "What's your favorite thing about me?" he asked.

Smugly.

Sah
What is knowledge without wisdom?
Sah smirked, "We'll just have to see now, won't we?" The Abandoned might not drink as often or as much as the courier, But he had found that it was getting increasingly difficult to become tipsy nowadays. Though he had no idea why, he wasn't about to look a gift horse in the mouth at the moment.

Raising a brow back at the courier with a small grin, Sah shrugged. A small hardly broke the truce. And there were certainly heavier mistakes that he could have gone with. But he'd rather keep the mood light and focus on the worst benign thing. Listening as he took another shot, Sah let out a snort of laughter. "Fuck that guy. I can't stand him." Always rude, and always entitled. The man grated on the Wild Thunder's nerves in every interaction.

Taking his offered shot, Sah paused. Smirking at Talyson he countered, "Oh?" The urge to make another jab was strong, but he refrained. Instead, he thought for a moment, another hum leaving him. That really was a habit, wasn't it? He hadn't noticed before. Brow furrowed in thought he downed his shot before turning back to the courier.

Appraising the man, he leveled him with a solemn look. "Your resilience." The courier was a determined and adaptable individual. One who always got back up and never backed down when it was important. Sah respected it. There were other traits of Talyson's that he liked. The man's loyalty and humor, to name a few more. But one was enough for tonight. He couldn't let the courier's ego get too big now, could he?

Sah's lips twitched into a smirk, breaking the spell. "Your turn. What's your favorite thing about me?"

In this one single instance Tal was prepared to be the better man and rise above Sah's pettiness. Once. For now. He let it pass without further comment and provided his own tale of woe and their mutual dislike for Took soon brought them back together again. The courier nodded sharply and raised his refilled glass for a ceremonial toast before dropping his next question on the table.

Baiting? Maybe. He was certainly expecting a jab, at least until Sah went all thoughtful and musical on him again. The near-silence was enough to make him wary and he was almost prepared for the honesty that the hunter dropped on him.

Almost.

It still drew a self-conscious scowl from the courier and brought a flush to his ears. He reached up to rub at the back of his neck as he realized there were no further caveats or pointed hooks to follow. His eyes fell to the table and he refused to look back up to meet Sah's gaze until his frenemy returned the question, leaving the courier to clear his throat awkwardly. "Uh." It was an eloquent beginning, and he scowled harder as he realized what he was doing and pulled his hand away from his neck. Buying himself some time, he dug into his Bag of Holding instead, fiddling with the tie and pulling out the box of cookies, which he pushed across the table.

They were a reward for good behavior as much as an excuse to give him a chance to collect his thoughts and come up with something on the fly.

"Your dependability," he replied gruffly. Sah always stayed true to his word and could be relied on no matter how tough things got. He was also loyal and brave... but the man was insufferable enough without adding more fuel to the fire. Tal took his shot and breathed in through his nose, feeling the booze burn deliciously all the way down his throat. "Your turn again."

Sah's lips twitched around his glass as Tal's ears burned. If the courier had looked up from the table, he would have seen the Wild Thunder's eyes soften with reluctant fondness. A small smile turned into an eager grin as the cookies appeared. Letting Tal recover, Sah happily opened the tin and took out a cookie.

He almost choked on teh first bite when Tal returned his honesty. Chasing it down with a shot, Sah was silent for a heartbeat. "Thank you." Busying himself with pouring the next round, he came up with a new question.

A bet this time. "I bet you an ursur's fur and tusks that the next region to cause or be in the center of drama is going to be Torchline. Which region do you think?" Halo had been the center of drama far too many times. But with the recent changes in leadership, Sah expected that more would be coming out of their warmer neighbor.
